Suzhou, which lies in the east of China’s Jiangsu Province, is a well-known city with rich history and culture. Its beautiful scenery and classical gardens attract millions of tourists every year. There is a popular saying that “gardens in the south of the Yangtze River are the best in China, yet gardens in Suzhou are the best among the best”. So Suzhou is known as the Garden City. Records show that there are almost 200 gardens of different sizes in Suzhou. Among them, Lingering Garden (留园) is the most famous and best preserved. In 1997, the Lingering Garden has been added to the World Cultural Heritage List by the UNESCO.
Lingering Garden has a history of over 400 years. The garden was first built as a private (私人的) living place in 1583 by Xu Taishi, an official in Ming Dynasty. Covering an area of 33,000 square meters, Lingering Garden was divided into four parts: eastern, central, northern and western parts. The architectural structures mainly gather in the eastern part. Entering this area, you will see that doors are open upon doors and courtyards are linked with gateways and covered with corridors (廊道). You will lose yourselves in the unique buildings.
