4 . Is it possible for animals to raise a human child? There are many stories that suggest it is possible. Not just wolves and dogs, but also sheep, bears and even monkeys are able to look after human children, Daily Mail reported.

There is the case of Ivan Mishukov, a 6-year-old boy from Moscow. Police found him living with dogs in the city’s streets in 1998. There, he had been begging for two years. Ivan found food to feed the dogs. And in return, the dogs kept him warm and protected him while he slept. When he was saved, he could hardly speak. Luckily, he later joined the army and lived like a normal adult.

But not all children who are raised by animals can adapt to human society. In 1848, British soldier Colonel William Sleeman found a little boy living with many wolves in India. He took him to a village, taking care of him and trying to teach him to speak. But nothing worked. The boy still behaved like a wolf, eating raw(生的) meat and refusing to wear clothes, no matter how cold the weather was. About two years later, he got very sick and passed away.

Some animals are believed to have strong maternal instincts(母性本能), which guide them to care for young animals, even those of other species(物种). However, people need to know that children raised by animals may experience long-term negative effects when they enter human society, according to Daily Mail.

1. Ivan Mishukov was raised by ________.
A.wolvesB.monkeysC.dogsD.bears

3. The case of the boy raised by wolves shows us that children raised by animals ________.
A.can learn from animalsB.can live longer
C.can speak animal languageD.may harm human beings

5 . Many people believe that you lose the ability to learn new languages as you get older. Language experts, however, will tell you that you’re never too old to learn a new language. As you get older, it can be more difficult to learn a new language, though.

Children and adults learn new languages in different ways. For children, language is their life. They study for thousands of hours every year, because they need to learn languages to become part of their communities. Adults, on the other hand, are already part of a language community. Learning a new language means becoming part of another language community, and adults rarely get the chance to practice as much as young children do.

Moreover, children learning a new language are expected to make mistakes. This gives them freedom when learning to be daring and confident. Adults, however, often feel stressed to be perfect when learning a new language. This can discourage many people and make it even harder to learn a new language.

When young children learn a new language, they come to see various(各种) languages as a “normal” part of society. This mindset(思维模式) helps them embrace learning a new language without feeling like they’re doing something unusual or “too hard”.

So if you want to learn a new language, go for it! It’s never too late to learn a new language. If you’re older, it may take more work, but it can be done. If you’re a young child, though, now is the time to step out and learn a new language!

1. By saying “Language is their life”, the writer means that children ________.
A.practice a new language a lotB.lead a happy life every day
C.are taken good care of adultsD.can’t live without language
2. Which of the following shows the difference between children and adults in learning a new language?
A.The behaviors they have.B.The learning attitudes(态度).
C.The future plans they have made.D.The materials they are using.
3. What may make it hard for old people to learn to a new language?
A.They are afraid of being laughed at.B.They usually have too many interests.
C.They think making mistakes is natural.D.They always make all kinds of mistakes.

6 . Welcome to Stuart’s Fruit Farm! This is a family-run farm in New York. Here you can pick fresh fruits along with your friends and families!

Seasonal directions

Mid-June-July

In mid-June, the fruit picking begins. Over nine acres (英亩) of cherries (樱桃) provide plenty of picking chances for everyone! Someone will take you from the parking lot up the hill to the cherries.

We grow three different kinds of sweet cherries. Our dark cherries are large and very sweet. The light cherries are large with golden yellow skin.

July-August

Yellow and white peaches (桃) come from about the last weekend of July and into August. We grow many types of peaches. Our white peaches are very sweet and loved by everyone. We have 12 acres of peaches, so there is enough for everyone to pick as many as they want!

September-October

As warm summer days give way to cool fall days, apples begin to appear. There are 15 acres of apples at Stuart’s Fruit Farm. With modern technology, we make apple trees grow short enough. This means that even the youngest children can reach for and pick their own apples.

We have recently added Asian pears to our farm. This popular fruit comes at the end of September. And through a visit to the pumpkin(南瓜) area, you can try to find the “perfect” pumpkin for your Halloween party!

7 . Suppose that you have some free time to kill. There is an enjoyable short video to watch and an interesting 1,000-word article to read. You can only choose one of the two. Which one will you pick?

Perhaps the video will be your choice. Over the past few years, watching videos online has become a part of many people’s daily lives. The number of people patiently reading long articles, meanwhile, has been cut down. Some people fear that video will one day replace (代替) text. But in my opinion, this isn’t going to happen.

Videos can in fact help us learn new information more quickly. However, can they help us fully learn about the ancient world? Many historical stories were recorded using only texts. Only through the reading of these texts can we truly and fully learn about what happened during the ancient world and the knowledge people had got.

Short videos are a type of “instant culture”. They come into and leave our minds like flying cars. Oftentimes, we can’t help but look for the second video immediately after we’ve finished watching one. But can we always remember and understand the contents (内容) of these videos? When we read a long article patiently, we often pay close attention to the contents. What’s more, texts allow us to use our imagination, while videos don’t.

In a word, video might change the way people learn about the world and the way they make themselves happy, but texts will never be replaced. Texts are like immortal (不朽的) stars which shine from the past to the future.

1. What is the writer trying to do in the passage?
A.To give advice.B.To ask for help.C.To show ideas.D.To express feelings.
2. How can people fully learn about the ancient world according to the writer?
A.By reading texts.B.By using imagination.
C.By watching videosD.By talking with old people.
3. What may the underlined word “instant” mean?
A.Slow.B.Quick.C.Small.D.Big.
4. Why does the writer think people will choose to watch a short video?
①The 1,000-word article is not interesting at all.
②Fewer people can patiently read long articles now.
③Watching videos online takes up people’s daily lives.
④Some people fear that video will one day replace text.
A.①②B.①③C.②③D.②④
5. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Texts will never be replaced.B.Texts take long time to understand.
C.Videos are enjoyable and popular.D.Videos are the best to kill free time.

8 . On the morning of November 6, I went to work as a volunteer (志愿者) guide along with some of my schoolmates. I had never volunteered at an art museum before.

Our group was sent to the show called “Time-Space Post Office”. This show was made up of many letters from the visitors who had attended it before. The letters were about people’s understanding of the arts or their wishes.

Soon, we welcomed a group of visitors. I was afraid to speak to them. Instead, I just stood by. But slowly, I became less nervous. I tried to speak to an old man, “Hello, I am a volunteer guide for the show. You are now looking at Mr. Ding Yi’s ‘Time-Space Post Office’. I’d like to introduce this show to you,” “Here, we can see many letters written by our old visitors,” I continued. “In fact, everybody can become a part of this show. You, too, can write about the future—your thoughts, dreams and hopes.” The old man smiled at me and said, “Thank you, boy! You just did a wonderful job!” After hearing those words, I was so proud.

This volunteer activity helped me to become more confident (自信的), I am now looking forward to taking part in a similar activity in the near future!

A.Letters from old visitors.B.Different kinds of postcards.

10 . Few words are spoken more often every day on the streets of Britain than “I’m sorry.” This phrase has become such a common response(反应)that it has taken on a lot of meanings.

Saying “Sorry” means to apologize(道歉). This is simple and easy to understand. We learn it both as a native speaker and as a student of foreign languages.

But in Britain, it takes on another meaning. It is a cultural expression. Imagine this: a man walks down the street, looking down at his phone. A woman is walking in the opposite direction, towards the man. She sees him, but she can’t get out of the way in time. The man knocks into the woman. Who should say sorry? Naturally, the man should say sorry because it was he who wasn’t looking where he was going. Yet in Britain, it is common for both to apologize.

It is known that British people, like most people, do not enjoy fight. So to quickly calm the situation, British people will apologize to each other.

Other times it may sound funny to hear “sorry”. Some of my friends say it at restaurants, as they ask the waiter, “Sorry, but can I order another drink?” It is not to apologize, but just to express that we need the waiter. In Britain, sorry doesn’t always mean exactly what you think.

1. The example in the third paragraph is used to _________.
A.describe a situation that people should avoid
B.explain why people should say sorry to each other
C.describe how “sorry” has another meaning in Britain
D.show how polite British people are
2. The restaurant example shows that “sorry” can be used to _________.
A.apologizeB.calm a situation down
C.explain what you’re thinking aboutD.ask a waiter to bring something
3. What might be a good title for this story?
A.Traditional British manners.B.“I’m sorry” is more than just an apology.
C.How to best catch others’ attentionD.Finding a way out of a difficult situation.
