1 . Little Mary is a good girl. She began to go to school last year and now she’s in Grade 2. Her home is not far from the school, but she is often late for class because she likes watching TV, and listens to music in the evening and goes to bed very late. So she can’t get up on time in the morning.
This term Mr. White, Mary’s uncle, works in her school. He teaches Grade 2 history. He is very strict with the students, of course, with Mary, too. He often tells Mary to follow the school rules and come to school on time. Today Mary got up late again. When she went to school, it was 8:15. Her uncle was waiting for her at the school gate. “You are ten minutes late for the first class.” Mr. White said angrily(生气地). “Why are you often late for class?” “Every time when I get to the street corner, I always see a sign(标志). It says SCHOOL GO SLOW!” said Mary.

2 . Volunteering is really great. It can help play an important part in the community (社区) and even the world. It can also be a wonderful time to meet new people and learn new skills. If you'd like to give something to an organization including money, think about lending your time and talents to organizations that are important to you.
◆Think about why you want to volunteer. Do you want to help the world or the community? Do you want to build your own skills or make new friends? Ask yourself these questions before volunteering. It can help you choose the right direction (方向) for your volunteer work.
◆Look for volunteer work that fits your skills and interests. If the volunteer work is out of your ability or doesn't interest you, you will have no strong feeling to do it well.
◆Get some training. Some volunteer work calls for some special skills. To do a good job, you need to get some training.
◆Start with something small. If you already have a busy schedule, you can volunteer for an hour or two every week or perhaps one day every month. If you keep on doing that, you might be surprised how much you accomplish.
◆Try not to give up. You will face some difficulties in the volunteer work. At that time, you should not give up. Instead (代替), you can ask for help from other teammates.
◆Have fun. You will get more if you love what you do. Also, what you do will bring lots of things to others.

5 . Some people like the freedom of driving their own car. But others find driving to be inconvenient or even dangerous. Luckily, the driverless cars we’ve seen in movies and TV shows are on the way here.
The first driverless car to hit the screen was Herbie. Herbie could drive by himself and even talk to his human friends. KITT was another driverless car that appeared on the 1980s TV show Knight Rider. KITT could drive itself and help its rider Michael Knight catch criminals.
While the driverless cars of today can’t talk to us, they do have many similarities to the ones we’ve seen on screen. Nearly every large car company is working on their own autonomous vehicle (AV). Tesla, for example, has developed a driver-assistance system for its cars called Tesla Autopilot.
Tesla Autopilot can complete many of the tasks that human drivers usually do. It can make sure that your car is centered in the correct lane (车道), as well as park itself and stop if it thinks that an accident might happen.
Google’s sister company Waymo seems to be leading the way in the AV area. Its self-driving cars are already being used for taxi services in the US city of Phoenix. It uses common cameras to determine distance, which allows the cars to get around without risk of crashing (撞车).
Although companies are making great progress in developing AV, there is still a lot of work to be done. Year after year, companies like Tesla, General Motors, and Toyota promise that fully self-driving cars will become widely available. But nearly all of these promises have fallen through.
One of the problems is that designing a self-driving car that is safe and easy to use is much harder than people realize. Self-driving cars have to analyze (分析) millions of data points in order to prevent accidents. Humans are used to doing this — but designing an AI that can work like human mind to make a decision quickly is very difficult.
However, new technologies like 5G and faster computer processors will make the process faster. As these technologies develop, fully self-driving cars will come closer to reality.
1. What can Tesla Autopilot do?A.It can talk to humans. | B.It can chase criminals. |
C.It can stop at any time. | D.It can finish many tasks. |

7 . British and American culture has the same source(源头) between the two countries. They have common historical background of education. Education in the United States carried on the ancient tradition of education in Europe, but developed to its own characteristics(特点). So the difference between the two counties is still very large.
USA
There is no general educational system(系统) in the USA — instead, each of the 50 states has its own system.
In most states, however, children go to school from about the age of six until at least age sixteen. Each year of school is called “grade”. All American students must successfully complete 12th Grade.
Generally speaking, a student attends seven years of primary(小学) education, which is often divided into four years of Elementary(初级的) school(Grade 1-4) and three years of Middle school(Grades 5-7). This is followed by secondary school, which is Junior High(Grades 8-9) and Senior High(Grades 10-12).
After finishing Senior High, if they choose to continue learning, they can then go on to higher education at college or university.
UK
In the UK, all children must go to school from age five to age sixteen. They go to primary school for seven years and secondary school for five years.
Primary school may be divided into Infant(幼儿) school (3 years) and Junior school (4 years). There are different kinds of secondary schools, but all pupils follow the same national curriculum.
After age 16, British students can choose to leave school, or — if their school results are good enough — they can go on to attend Sixth Form for a further two years. At the end of this time, they take “A” (Advanced) Level exams to go to college or university.
1. Why are there many similar points between British and American education?A.Because they are all developed countries in the world. |

9 . The first time I saw Kay, she was sitting in my front yard, hugging(抱) my dog Harley. She and her husband Sean had just moved into a small house down the road from us. From the moment I talked to her, I knew Kay would be a cherished(珍爱的) friend. Her smile and good cheer made me feel better just being around her. Her voice was always full of happiness.
It didn't take long before Kay was beloved by everyone in our neighborhood. Children and adults visited her home often. Although she already had four cats, she also kept a stray(流浪的) dog.
When we visited her, she would kindly listen to all of our trouble and then say something so wise that we would leave her home with our hearts singing. Sometimes I would read her my stories and she would always encourage me to keep writing.
She told me she was badly ill when we met for the first time. But she lived each day with such cheer that I often forgot just how ill she was. Still, she died on a cold winter day with heavy snow falling down.
