1 . Have you heard about paper cutting? Paper cutting is an important art form in China. Paper cuttings are used for many purposes, and everything can become the theme(主题) of paper cuttings, from people to the things that can be found in everyday life such as birds, flowers and animals.

Each paper cutting brings out the personal ideas of the author(作者). People express traditional culture or their own feelings with different styles of paper cuttings. For example, when someone marries, we put up some red paper cuttings on the wall, dressing table or other furniture to express our best wishes.

It is easy to learn paper cutting, but very difficult to make it perfect. We need a longtime practice to learn how to use the scissors and how to paint. Moreover, we need to learn some cutting skills.

3 . In the world of gestures, the best suggestion is to remember the two A’s-Ask and Aware(意识到). If you see a gesture that is new or puzzling, ask a local person what it means. Then be aware of the body signs around you. Let’s check out three common hand gestures, the OK-Sign, the Thumb-Up and the V-Sign.

1. The OK-Sign

This gesture was popular in the USA during the early 19th century by the newspapers that were starting using first letters to shorten common phrases. Use the gesture to tell a French person their cooking is wonderful and maybe they’ll throw you out. In Japan, it can mean money. If you travel internationally, the safest rule is to always ask the locals to show you their insult (侮辱) signs to avoid any possible uncomfortable situations.

2. The Thumb-Up

When Europeans count from one to five, they use the Thumb-Up to mean one and the index finger (食指) becomes two; but most English-speaking people count one on the index finger and two on the middle finger, in this case, the Thumb-Up will mean the number five; it’s commonly used by hitch-hikers(搭便车的人) who are thumbing a lift; it is an OK-Sign; and when the thumb is sharply upwards, it becomes an insult.

3. The V-Sign

Winston Churchill popularized the V-for-victory sign during the World War II, but his two-fingered gesture was done with the palm (手掌) facing out. What about the palm faces towards the speaker? It would be an insult.

5 . During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when restaurants first shut down, Americans started cooking more at home. They had more leftovers (剩菜). In general, leftovers can be a convenient future meal. But they have a dark side, too.

Leftovers and other unspoiled (未损坏的) foods that we throw away are called food waste. We create food waste in many places—on farms, in supermarkets, at restaurants and even at home. It is a large problem that wastes resources and causes pollution.

For example, growing, packaging and transporting food takes a lot of space, energy and people to make it happen. When we throw food away, we also waste all of the energy that goes into these processes.

Roe and his team wanted to study food waste. They decided to concentrate on leftovers. They tracked (追踪) the eating habits of 18 men and women in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. They tracked what they ate using an iPhone app. During the 7-day study, they gathered 1,200 different foods on their plates.

They found that people were more likely to pick at leftovers and not eat them fully. Also, eating leftovers seems to inspire (激发) eating other foods. This is perhaps because the leftovers are older and less fresh. Roe says there is a big lesson on how to avoid throwing food into the dustbin: choose smaller meals.

1. When restaurants first shut down, Americans ________ at home.
A.started cooking moreB.had fewer leftovers
C.stopped cookingD.had fewer meals
2. According to the passage, we don’t create food waste ________.

6 . There is great excitement and argument(争论)over Artificial Intelligence(AI, 人工智能). The argument about whether robots will replace teachers in the classroom is very heated. Some people think it is sure to happen in the next ten years. Others think that the value a good teacher brings, not only to the classroom setting. but in developing a child’s confidence and creativity outside lessons, cannot be easily replaced.

AI is not new for us and is already being used successfully in many fields, such as medicine, science and so on. So what does this mean for our future? In my view, AI will help kids to think more freely and creatively. Can AI possibly cut down the teaching work in the future, too? Of course. Our teachers are always busy preparing materials for their lessons, Just imagine how happy they would be if they don’t have to copy hundreds of paper, but instead, have this task or others done by machines.

However, most importantly, I do not believe AI will be able to imitate the human mental condition totally, especially emotional intelligence(情商). What makes learning unforgettable is shared experience, human interaction(互相作用), and long-lasting positive relationships. For example, experienced teachers can comfort a student if he has suffered a serious loss. But it hasn’t been proved that robots can imitate this well.

I also believe we need to continue to celebrate our kids’ personality and their ability not only to make decisions but also make the right decisions. These are skills that they can get as they get more life experience and are given the space to experiment.

To what degree can teachers use AI in their classes? You can have all the data(数据)you like with the help of AI, but great teachers will also need to depend on their own feelings.

1. The writer starts the passage by ________.
A.telling storiesB.comparing views
C.raising questionsD.giving suggestions
2. We can learn that some people think a good teacher might be able to ________.
A.use AI as much as possible in the class teaching
B.help kids think more freely and creatively than AI
C.have high intelligence to deal with the heavy teaching work
D.develop a child’s confidence and creativity outside the lessons
3. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.Why teachers can be replaced in classrooms.
B.There is argument over Artificial Intelligence.
C.How helpful AI can be to both students and teachers.
D.AI is only being used successfully in education.
4. What’s the structure of the passage?
A.B.
C.D.
5. Which example can be shown that the human teacher is important?
A.A teacher gives lessons to students.
B.A teacher use modern way to teach students.
C.A teacher comforts a student who failed the exam.

10 . I’ve been working in a school for more than twenty years. Many parents often ask me, “How can you teach your child good study skills? How can he or she get the homework done as quickly as possible?” Here are some tips:

1. If the child is as young as nine or ten, ask him or her to prepare a small notebook to write down the homework given by his or her teachers. By developing this habit, he or she will learn to be much more responsible(负责的).

2. Find a good place to study. This should be a quiet place that is free from everything but study things. No games, radios, or televisions. Once you have decided on a place to study, this should be the only place where your child does his or her homework and studies. There should also be a very specific time for homework to be done. Usually, homework should be done as soon as the child gets home from school. This also goes for the kids who take part in after-school activities. Of course, it is a good idea to allow the child to have a healthy snack before the work begins.

3. Also remember, that it is the child’s duty to do his or her homework. Some children give up easily and go to Mom and Dad for help when they have a problem. Try to let them solve it first. By doing this, they will get a sense of success from overcoming problems. In this way we help them to help themselves.
