1 . Ingvar Kamprad was born on 30th March 1926 in Ljungby, Sweden. He is the wealthiest European-born person and the seventh wealthiest person in the world. A businessman from childhood, he grew up from selling matches to his neighbours as a young boy to selling household items (家用商品) to the world as the creator of furniture store IKEA.

Kamprad discovered the secret of business at a young age. He realised that he could buy matches in bulk(批发) from Stockholm and sell them separately at reasonable prices, and still make a great deal of money. He developed his business successfully from matches to fish, Christmas cards and pens. When Kamprad was at the age of seventeen, his father gave him money as a prize for the progress he made in his studies. With this money, IKEA was born.

IKEA is one of the most famous shops in the world. It sells furniture, accessories (配件), bathroom and kitchen items. “IKEA” is known for always giving names instead of numbers to each of its products. This is because of Kamprad’s dyslexia (阅读障碍). Actually, he found names easier to remember than product codes (代码). The store’s name comes from Ingvar Kamprad’s initials (首字母)—IK, those of the family farm where he was born—Elmtaryd and the village close by—Agunnaryd. “IKEA” now has stores in over forty different countries.

Kamprad is famous for his frugality. He doesn’t wear suits, and he flies economy class(经济舱). He also requires that his employees (员工) write on both sides of a sheet of paper. He also drives a fifteen-year-old Volvo, and is known to buy wrapping (包装) paper and Christmas paper in the post, especially during Christmas sales. However, Kamprad owns a house with a large garden in Switzerland and a vineyard (葡萄园) in France.

4 . Elephants are the largest animals on land. For a long time, they are very helpful. They carry big trees, take people from place to place, and are even used in wars.

Some people think it’s not easy to hurt an elephant because its skin is thick and hard. In fact, that’s wrong. Sometimes, a needle can also be very dangerous for the elephant.

People say elephants are afraid of mice. This is wrong, too. In fact, elephants have very poor eyesight, so they usually cannot see a mouse even if one comes very close to them. If a person has a good memory, people will say that he has an elephant memory. However, up to now, no study shows that elephants have a better memory than any other animal.

People also believe that when it is time for elephants to die, they will hide themselves in a so-called “elephant graveyard”. Often, hunters try to find such places to get ivories（象牙）, but few people really find places like that. In fact, when elephants are old or get sick, they will stay in deep and secret caves until they get better or die.

6 . Healthy eating doesn’t just mean what you eat, but how you eat. Here is some advice on healthy eating.

Eat with others. It can help you to see others’ healthy eating habits. If you usually eat with your parents, you will find that the food you eat is more delicious.

Listen to your body. Ask yourself if you are really hungry. Have a glass of water to see if you are thirsty-sometimes you are just thirsty, you need no food. Stop eating before you feel full.

Eat breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Without eating during(在……期间) the past ten hours, your body needs food to get you going. You will be smarter after eating breakfast.

Eat healthy snacks like fruit; yogurt(酸奶) or cheese. We need snacks sometimes. In fact, it’s a good idea to eat healthy snacks between your three meals. This doesn’t mean that you can eat a bag of chips instead of a meal.

Don’t eat dinner late. In our busy life, we always put off(推迟) eating dinner until the last moment. Try to eat dinner at least 3 hours before you go to bed. This will give your body a chance to digest most of the food before you rest for the next eight to ten hours.

7 . What are you holding in your hand while you are taking the examination? Right. A pen.

Though it is small, the pen has changed the history, improved the trade of countries, recorded events, carried news, and done far more work for human beings than all other tools.

Without it, progress(社会的进步) would have been almost impossible. The invention of the wheel, the introduction of the steam engine (蒸汽机)，the use of electricity, all these have changed the lives of millions of people, but the pen has done more. It has taken away mountains, and it has prepared the way for all progress and development of society.

In the past the pen did all the work if you wanted to keep any writing for some time. The lawyers(律师) took up their pens and wrote the law of the country from the days when papyrus (纸莎草纸) was first used. The most famous letters in the world were written with a pen. It was with a pen that the greatest thinkers of all time wrote down their thoughts.

The pen is very utilitarian. We cannot sign a bill or write 2 letters or buy a house without our pen. An agreement is worthless till our name is written with a pen. The writers encourage the world with it. The students take their examinations with it as well.

Our coming into the world is recorded with a pen. Before we have been at school, our name is written on the name list with a pen. We cannot be married until we have signed. A pen records the important events in our lives.

Let's remember that we hold in our hands the most powerful instrument which man owns. The pen is a magic tool. Whenever you use it, enjoy it.

8 . As teenagers, you have many dreams. These dreams can be very big, such as winning the Nobel Prize(诺贝尔奖), or they can be small. You may just want to do well in your lessons.

Don't let it leave your heart. Keep telling yourself what you want. Do this little by little and your dream will come true faster because a big dream comes from many small dreams.

You must also never give up your dream. The biggest difficulty comes from yourself. You need to decide what is the most important. Studying hard will help you get better exam results.

As you get closer to your dream, it may change a little. This is good as you have the chance to learn more skills and find new interests.

9 . When I was a teenager (青少年), I was always unhappy. I often got angry with my parent by shouting at them and not talking with them.

Later on, when I thought about it, I understood it was wrong to do that. I decided to try my best to calm myself down and get along well with others.

Now when I laugh, I show at least eight teeth. That's how happy. I am feeling. I start to act more politely to people around me.

I had another teenage problem. I cared about my look very much. I spent time in front of the mirror (镜子) every day deciding what my hair should look like, while all my dirty clothes were on my bedroom floor.

As life went on, I learnt that sometimes looks aren't that important. True beauty should be inside our hearts, but not on our faces. I should spend time studying at home.

I believe most of the teenagers have problems like me, but I also believe that, if you deal with (处理) them healthily, they will become important lessons, and will help you make better future in your life.

10 . The deer (鹿) is the king of the woods. The deer is one of the largest woodland animals, but it is so shy that you might find it hard to reallyspotone. During the day, deer hide in the high grass quietly, listening for any noise and ready to run away at the first sign of danger. Nighttime is when deer really get active. They move around all the time in search of grass and other plants to eat. They can run as far as 60 km in one night! Female (雌性的) deer live in groups with their young, while males (雄鹿) prefer to be on their own or with other males.

But in the autumn, things change. The woods are full of the sounds of male deer. They let out sounds to draw females’ attention and to let other males know that they are ready to fight over the female deer. Male deer fight each other with their antlers (鹿角).

A baby deer is called a fawn (幼鹿). The coat of a newborn fawn is covered in pretty white spots (斑点) that disappear as it gets older. The mother deer watches over her babies and bravely protects them from dangers. Although female deer don't have antlers, they fight off other animals by kicking!

A male deer's antlers carry on growing all his life. A ten-year-old deer's antlers can have more than 10 branches (分枝) and weigh 20 kg each. Every spring, the antlers drop off and an even larger set will take their place. You can tell how old a deer is by counting the number of branches on his antlers. The more branches it has, the older the deer is.
