1 . One day in class, the teacher held up an apple, stood at the front of the class and said, “Please smell the smell in the air!”

One student put up his hand and said, “I can smell it. It is the smell of an apple.”

The teacher passed by each of the students and said, “Smell again to see if the smell of the apple is still in the air.”

Half of the students raised their hands to show that they could smell it. The teacher went back to the front of the classroom and asked again if the students could smell the apple.

Everyone raised their hands except one little girl. The teacher came to the girl and asked, “You really can’t smell the apple?”

The girl answered, “No, I can’t smell it. I don’t think it’s a real apple.”

The teacher smiled at the girl and said to the class, “She is right! This is not a real apple.”

All of the other students’ eyes were wide open. They also might have thought that the apple was not real, but they didn’t have the self-confidence (自信) to speak up. They just followed the first student.

4 . One January morning, Thomas Smith is walking his dog, Jack, in the park. Mr. Smith is sitting under a tree and Jack is running on the ice lake. Suddenly, the dog falls (掉) into the water.

“I must save my dog,” says Mr. Smith. He doesn’t think much, and he jumps into the cold water. It’s difficult for him to swim in the cold water. But he is just thinking about saving Jack. Luckily, he helps Jack out of the water. And they are safe now. “When we get out of the water, everybody asks how Jack is, and nobody is worried about (担心) me!” Mr. Smith says happily with a smile. In fact, people think he is a hero.

Animals are our great friends. Can you do the same for them like Mr. Smith? We should save the animals in danger.

A teacher decided to let her class play a game. The teacher told each child in the class to bring along a plastic bag with a few potatoes. Each potato will be given a name of a person that the child hates. So the number of potatoes that a child will put in the plastic bag will depend on hatred the number of people he/she hates.

So when the day came, every child brought some potatoes with the name of the people he/she hated. Some had two potatoes and some three while some up to five potatoes. The teacher then told the children to carry the potatoes in the plastic bag with them wherever they go for one week. As days passed, and the children started to complain due to the unpleasant smell let out by the rotten(腐烂的) potatoes. Besides, those having five potatoes also had to carry heavier bags. After one week, the game was finally over.

The teacher asked, “How did you feel while carrying the potatoes with you for one week?” The children started complaining of the trouble that they had to go through having to carry the heavy and smelly potatoes wherever they go.

Then the teacher told them the hidden meaning behind the game. The teacher said, “This is exactly the situation when you carry your hatred(仇恨) for somebody inside your heart. The hatred will be harmful to your heart. If you cannot tolerate the smell of rotten potatoes for just one week, can you imagine what it is like to have the hatred in your heart for your lifetime?”

8 . Several months after I was badly hurt in a car accident, my father sent me to a blind school.

That morning was the new beginning. I went to this school and I heard lots of children. My new teacher took me to the class where we were taught to write and type in Braille. I found it quite difficult.

“Hi, sweetheart, how is school going?” asked my father.

“Daddy, I can’t do this. I try and try, but I just don’t get it. I don’t know if I am ever going to learn to read Braille. It’s too difficult,” I cried.

Daddy just held me in his arm and said, “Do you remember that we went to the temple which is on the top of a mountain? When we were climbing the mountain, your legs started aching. You sat down and said, ‘I can’t see the temple’. You can’t see it because it is covered with fog. Although you can’t see it, I know it is here. I will make sure you will climb up to it.”

“That day you showed me that just you can’t see anything, it does not mean it is not there. So although climbing the mountain was difficult, I knew I would get to the top.” I was clear what my dad wanted me to understand.

I went back to school and started with new energy. Very soon I could read.

One of my classmates said, “You are lucky, you know. You have at least seen the world. I have just heard it. I have been told there are many colors in this world but I don’t understand what color means.”

After listening to her for the first time in two years, I felt lucky. And on that day I learned that although the light in my eyes is gone, I must see the world with the light in my heart.

9 . Most teens try very hard to look good. They wear beautiful clothes, cool shoes and fashionable sunglasses. They may want to stay home from school because of the smallest pimple(粉刺). I know because I used to focus only on my appearance. However, now I work hard to see more than just my looks. I'll explain why.

Firstly, if you only focus on how you look, you'll also focus only on the appearance of others. As a result, you'll become a person who can't see the truly important characteristics(品质) in others. Some people don't follow the latest fashion trends. If you avoid getting to know them, you'll miss out on many interesting and valuable relationships in your life.

Moreover, if you focus only on your appearance, you'll miss out on chances to improve your abilities. For example, if you spend all your time trying to look fashionable, you won't have any time to become a better musician or improve your grades at school. Even the most attractive people need to have skills to succeed in life.

In addition, focusing only on your looks can make you feel disappointed about yourself. If you don't worry about a pimple on your face, you'll be less likely to feel unhappy about yourself. On the whole, happy people like to communicate with the world in a positive way. Therefore, feeling happy is more important than looking good. You should work hard at feeling good, not just looking good.

I used to focus only on how I looked. However, now I work hard to focus on all the different parts of myself—my appearance, personality, abilities, and so on. So I'm a much happier person. If you take my advice, you'll be a happier person too. Your first step is to look at yourself without a mirror!

10 . Many people like travelling. Travelling is one of the most popular activities during vacations. Modern traffic develops fast, so travelling to different places gets much easier than before.

Staying healthy while travelling can make your trip happier. But do you know how to keep healthy during a trip？The following information may be useful to you.

Before leaving:

★Wear comfortable shoes, a hat and sunglasses.

★Take some necessary(必要的) medicines with you. You will need them when you get sick or have other problems.
