2 . Have you ever felt like you are just running from one activity to another? In school, do you hurry from one subject to another? When things happen so fast, it’s easy to get lost of what you’re doing or learning. It’s important to stop yourself every now and then to think about what you’ve been doing or learning.

Self-reflection (反省) means slowing down and cooling yourself down, including calming (平静) your mind. By being calm and not going quickly, you give your brain a chance (机会) to think about what is already received (收到的). Some people like to do self-reflections only in their mind. Others write down in diaries or notes. Either way works, depending on your own personal learning. You can follow the steps to do self-reflection.

First, choose the proper time to do it. School textbooks are divided (划分) into units of study. This makes it easier to begin self-reflection. Look for time when you complete a unit of study. Sometimes you know the unit is over because there is some kind of test. Use these natural breaks to stop and do self-reflection.

Then, find a quiet place and take out your reflection diary. Write down some notes on the new things that you learned in the unit. Let your mind think about the notes you’ve written before and make some connections (联系).

Finally, think about things that you’re not sure of. Maybe you learned a new way to work out a math problem, but you’re not sure when to use it. Writing down your questions will help you remember to look for answers the next time you are working with the same topic.

Self-reflection is important for a successful student. If you have never taken the time to do self-reflection, try it now.

1. According to Paragraph 2, people CANNOT do self-reflection by ______.
A.taking notesB.working quicklyC.keeping a diaryD.thinking to themselves
2. What does the underlined word “complete” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Stop.B.Start.C.Finish.D.Continue.
3. The structure (结构) of this passage can be ______.
A.B.
C.D.
4. Which can be the best title for this passage?
A.Try Doing Self-refection Now!B.Keep Yourself Busy!
C.Why is Self-reflection Important?D.How Can We Learn Fast?

3 . Honey from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious. Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees' nest(巢)and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper —a little bird called a honey guide.

The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax(蜡)in the beehives(蜂房). The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees' nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives aloud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always fall to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.

Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but they do know that it really wants to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from far away. They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit.

4. How can a honey guide find the beehives quickly?

6 . It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn't see some rain soon we would lose everything.

I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year-old son, Billy, walking very slowly toward the woods. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house. Moments later, however, he was once again walking toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour. I walked out of the house quietly and followed him on his journey.

He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked; being very careful not to spill(溅出)the water he carried. Leaves slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He had a much greater purpose(意图). Then I saw the most amazing picture. I saw a baby deer lying on the ground. It was dying of thirst, and it lifted its head with great effort to lap(舔)up the water cupped in my beautiful boy's hand.

Now I understood what was going on. The week before, he tried giving water to our horses but I told him not to waste water. Now when he stood up and turned, I was there in front of him. His eyes were filled with tears, "I'm not wasting," he said. I joined him with a small pot of water from the kitchen. I let him walk to the baby deer alone while I stood at the edge of the woods. 7 . Did your parents told you any strange things about protecting your eyes? For example, they may say that you will go blind (看不见的) from reading in the dark, but you could make up for it by eating a lot of carrots. This is just one of the wrong ideas you may have heard of. Here are some scientific explanations (解释) for three mistakes the people often make about eyes. Let's take a look.

Can eating carrots improve (提高) your eyesight (视力)?

Carrots are rich in Vitamin A, which is important for our eyes. Vitamin A helps the eyes to make light into signals, helping people see in low light conditions (条件). However, eating more carrots doesn't help you see better. A certain minimum amount (一定数量) will help, but a large number of carrots will not allow you to get rid of (摆脱) your glasses.

If your parents have bad eyesight, will you have bad eyesight, too?

Myopia (近视) can be passed from parents to children. A study showed that if both parents are myopia, there's a 33 %~60 % chance (机会) that the child is myopia. For children who have one parent with myopia, the chance is 23%~40%, and it's down to 6%~15% for kids with non-myopia parents. So no matter how bad your parents' eyesight is, you still have a chance having good eyesight.

Is it true that people who are color blind can't see colors?

Color blindness (色盲) doesn't mean that someone can't see colors at all, like a black and white movie. It means that it is difficult for someone to tell certain colors apart, usually green and red or blue and yellow. Our eyes have color cone cells (视锥细胞) that sense different wavelengths of light. If these cells don't work well, color blindness occurs.

1. According to the passage, which is the RIGHT idea about eating carrots?
A.Eating carrots doesn't help people see better.
B.People need to eat as many carrots as possible.
C.Eating carrots is good for eyes, but people don't need to eat a lot of them.
D.Eating a lot of carrots is only good for those who work in low light conditions.
2. Sam's mother is myopia, but his father is not. How much could be his chances of having bad eyesight?
A.6~15%B.23~40%C.33~60%D.60~77%
3. The underline word "occurs" in this passage probably means ________.
A.恶化B.发生C.改善D.加深
4. What's the best title of this passage?
A.Advice on Protecting Your Eyes.B.Three Wrong Ideas about Eyes.

8 . Do you know Black Friday? It is the day following Thanksgiving Day (the fourth Thursday of November) in the United States. People think it means the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the US, and most stores and shopping malls open very early. Things will be on great sale for people to buy.

Black Friday is not a holiday, but California and some other states(州) in the USA think it as a holiday just for some people who don't work in shops like officers, teachers and students. They can have holidays both on Thanksgiving and on the following Friday. In this way, they make it a four-day weekend, so more people can go shopping during these days. It is the busiest(最繁忙的) shopping day of the whole year in America. Like the Double Eleventh Day in China.

Black Friday first appeared in Philadelphia. People used the word to describe the heavy traffic jam(堵塞) and the most crowded streets on the day after Thanksgiving, because people all went into the shopping malls and shops to buy things they wanted. It brought a lot of trouble to the drivers and policemen. And also on this day, the business could move into "black", and this meant that it helped the shop owners make a lot of money. 9 . Christopher Columbus (哥伦布) , who is one of several historical persons regarded as the first European to discover the Americas, was born in 1451 in Italy. His father was a wool businessman. When he was young, Columbus loved sailing adventure very much. When he was 26 years old, he began to make business voyages(航行). The farthest countries he reached were Iceland and Guinea.

Although they didn't get to rich Asian countries and took back wealth, they found a new place that nobody had gone to. Columbus thought it was India and called the islands the West Indias.
