1 . One year ago, I worked at a traditional Chinese medicine store. Business was not bad. Every day we mixed medicinal herbs(中药)for patients, so the store was always full of a strong herbal smell. After I had worked there for a time, a boy of 13 or 14 started coming and sitting on the stairs outside the store for a while every day. It seemed strange to me. “Do you like the herbal smell? ” I asked him one day. “I grew up with this kind of smell, ” he said. He told me that his mother took herbal medicine for years, so he could mix herbs for his mother when he was very young. He mixed the herbs with deep love, hoping his mother would get better as soon as possible.

“Is your mother well now? ” I asked.

He shook his head, “My mother passed away three years ago. ” Looking up into the sky, he went on, “When I first passed by here and smelled the herbs, I thought of my mother. It is comforting to remember those days when she was alive. So I come here every day to sit for a moment. When I sit around this smell, I feel as if my mother is still alive and is waiting for her medicine in her room. ”

2 . Do you think you could live your life without buying anything? There are people in the world who live in this way. They are called freegans. Freegans live a non-consumerist (非消费主义的) lifestyle—they reuse clothes, household items, and even food that other people just throw away.

Finding food plays a big part in the life of freegans. They look for food in the wild or even eat food that they take from dumpsters (垃圾桶). When you hear the word “dumpster”, you usually think of a smelly (发臭的), dirty place—but in reality, most food that is thrown away is of good quality (质量). Many supermarkets throw away vegetables and fruits simply because they look ugly. Freegans eat this kind of food.

I used to have many misunderstandings about the freegan way of living. I thought they were poor or homeless. But in fact, most freegans have the income to live just like regular consumers. Instead, they choose to live in a way that is more eco-friendly. Many of them also spend their free time volunteering to promote (宣传) a greener lifestyle.

It’s hard for many of us to live a freegan lifestyle because we are used to consumerism. This is why I really admire (敬佩) the freegans’ wish to protect the planet. I am now trying not to spend money on any unnecessary things. It is my first step in helping reduce global waste.

3. Why do some people live a non-consumerist lifestyle?
A.Because they are poor and homeless.
B.Because they don’t have enough income.
C.Because they want to live a greener lifestyle.
4. What can we probably do to live a greener lifestyle?
A.We can always live a poor life.
B.We can look for food in dumpsters.
C.We can spend less money on unnecessary.
5. What’s the best title of this article?

3 . Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can’t talk, but can they lie in other ways? Can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees, behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why? Dishonesty often helps them survive.

Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When an enemy gets close to its nest, the plover leads it away from the nest. How? It pretends to have a broken wing. The enemy follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.

Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when a thief is watching them. So they go back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.

Birds called cuckoos have found a way to have babies without doing much work. How? They don’t make nests. Instead, they get into other birds’ nests secretly. Then they lay their eggs and fly away. When the baby birds come out, their adoptive parents feed them.

Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner’s hand and start fighting again.

Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is normal for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimps don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share their food. As children, many of us learn the saying “You can’t fool Mother Nature.” But maybe you can’t trust her, either.

4 . Stonchenge is a famous place in England, one of the oldest and most mysterious(神秘的)places in the world. It was probably put up between 1800 B. C. and 1400 B. C. It lies in the city of Salisbury, which is about 13 km south of Stonchenge.

Stonehenge was a ring of standing stones, including upright(垂直的)stones with a horizontal(水平的)stone lying across the top. When it was completed, it was made up of a double circle of stones with two more groups of stones outside the circles. Over time, however, many of the stones have been broken by wind and rain, only a small number is still standing today.

It is unclear who built Stonchenge or even how it was built. Many of the stones must have been transported over 250 miles to Stonchenge. Single stones, some of them weighing about four tons, must have been sent on rivers and rolled over land on tree trunks(树干). They can’t have been carried! The men who moved the stones didn’t have wheels or horses. Each stone had to be moved by hand.

The purpose of Stonchenge is just as mysteries. It has been called a place to honor ancestors, a sun temple, an ancient clock and a calendar. Some people think the stones have been built in a special way to mark sunrise and sunset at certain times during the year, because the sun shines directly into the center of the stones. Others have even thought that it was an ancient generator, which is a machine to produce electricity, because it was built along energy lines in the earth and was used to make use of the earth’s natural energies.

5 . Embroidery (刺绣) is an important art form in Chinese culture. The most famous embroidery styles are Su embroidery from Suzhou, Shu embroidery from Sichuan, Xiang embroidery from Hunan and Yue embroidery from Guangdong.

Shu embroidery is the oldest of the four. It dates back to the Han Dynasty(206 BC-220 AD). People sold it to other countries through the South Silk Road.

Embroidery takes time and patience. Since modern machines can make cheaper embroidery products today, fewer people buy handmade Shu embroidery products. They are also very few young embroiderers. So the skill is in danger of dying out. To protect the skill, Shu embroidery was added to China's intangible cultural heritage list (非物质文化遗产目录) in 2006.

Meng Dezhi has been making Shu embroidery for forty years. The 59-year-old is a national-level inheritor (传承人) of the art form. She used to work at the Chengdu Shu Embroidery Factory. But in 2006, the factory went broke and Meng lost her job.

Wanting to save the art, Meng wanted to have her own place and teach Shu embroidery to others. It's hard work. Workers need to divide each silk thread (线) into more than ten or even thirty pieces. Each piece is thinner than a single human hair. In 2016, Baidu invited Meng to make a homepage logo for Qixi Festival. It was a small logo, but it required the use of 45 types of sewing techniques (针法) and 35,000 stitches (针).

Meng is trying to save Shu embroidery by teaching in different universities and communities. She believes that Shu embroidery stands for thousands of years of Sichuan culture and should be saved.

"I feel that I have the responsibility to pass on Shu embroidery skills to young people, to let it run from generation to generation," she said.

6 . Low carbon life (低碳生活) has been known by all over the world for years, but in many countries it is still not followed well. One reason is that some traditional technology and economic (经济的) situations stop it from going on well. So, to improve this problem, we should first learn what is low carbon life and find the way to achieve it.

Generally speaking, low carbon life is to live a life with low CO2 giving out. Firstly, the greenhouse gases are from the use of traditional energy, such as oil, coal, etc. So some machines which get power by burning such fuel (燃料) play the main part of global warming. The most ones are traditional traffic. Take the one-way trip from Hong Kong to London directly by airplane on economy class (经济舱) as an example. So these years, we begin to hear about more and more cycling and walking tour. Bikes are welcomed by travelers as they are cheap and environmental-friendly. With the development of high speed railway, which is safe, comfortable and low-carbon, many tourists like to take it.

Secondly, besides the traditional energy is polluting our earth, it will be used up. So we need to save energy, and low carbon life will help this. At the same time, new clean energy is being developed and used more in our life. Some well-known new energies, such as solar (太阳能), wind, and nuclear (核) energy has been first used more and more widely. It's not enough, we must develop more new clean energy. Good news is that some cities in our country have begun their new energy plan instead of the old, such as Nanchang. In Harbin, more and more rechargeable (可再充电的) electrical bicycles and cars can be newly seen on the road. Using new energy is also part of low carbon life.

Believe with the help of everyone's efforts on low carbon life, the beautiful earth will be brought back to life soon.
