Numbers can be tricky. On one hand, they are simply numbers. On the other hand, they have meanings. Some problems are difficult to solve, so people can use lots of number expressions that can help. Here are some examples:
Some problems have only one solution. We cannot be of two minds over this. But with any luck, we could solve the problem in two shakes of a lamb's tail. We could have our answers quickly and easily.
Sometimes we can kill two birds with one stone. That is, we can complete two goals with only one effort or action. But we must remember that two wrongs don't make a right. If someone does something bad to you, you should not do the same to him.
If you are going out with your closest friend and you don't want another friend to go along on your date, you can just say to your friend: two's company, three's a crowd.
Some of my friends are confused and do not understand their schoolwork. They are at sixes and sevens. In fact, they don't care if they finish high school. They see little difference between the two choices. But they are really happy when they complete their studies and graduate from high school. They are in seventh heaven. They are on cloud nine.
Nine times out of ten, students who do well in school find good jobs. Some work in an office doing the same things every day at nine-to-five jobs. You do not have to dress to the nines, or wear your best clothes, for this kind of work.

2 . One thing that could help us to recover from tiredness is sleep. And sleeping is the favorite hobby of most people today. Studies show that the way people sleep at night decides the type of personality they have. Robert Phipps, a body language expert, has named four sleeping positions that influence personality.
Phipps found that worriers, those who stress the most, are likely to sleep in the fetal position. He found that this is the most common bedtime position, with nearly 58 percent of people sleeping on their side with knees up and head down. The more we curl up, the more comfort we are seeking.
The second most common position is the log. People sleep with a straight body, with arms at each side. Nearly 28 percent of people sleep this way and they often feel harder to move their body when they wake up. “The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking is and you are unwilling to change, which means you make things harder for yourself,” according to Phipps.
Yearner sleepers are next on the list. About 25 percent of people sleep in this style-on their side with arms stretched out in front, looking as if they are chasing their dreams or perhaps being chased themselves, “Yearners are always expecting the best results.” explained Phipps. “These people often wake up refreshed and they are willing to face the challenges of the day ahead.”
Perhaps the strangest sleeping style is the freefaller position. This sleeping position makes up 17 percent of the population. They sleep face down on the stomach. “These people,” according to Phipps, “feel like they have little control over their life.” Not only is this the strangest sleeping style, but also the least comfortable, and people may wake up feeling tired and have no energy.
In conclusion, Phipps has only one more thing to add, “A good sleep sets us up for the following day and our sleeping positions can decide how we feel when we wake up.”

①At the first Olympic marathon in 1896, runners ran a shorter course (跑道) than today’s 42.195-kilometre event. Even so, the winner finished the race within three hours. However, runners have improved. On Oct. 12, 2019, 34-year-old Eliud Kipchoge from Kenya became the first person to run a marathon in less than two hours. Clocking in at 1:59:40, Kipchoge crossed the finish line. “No one is limited. This shows the spirit of sport,” Kipchoge told the BBC after the race in Vienna, Austria.
②Besides Kipchoge’s strong willpower and excellent physical condition, science and technology helped him achieve success. Hills and turns slow runners down, so Kipchoge’s team picked the best course in Vienna among many. The city’s cool and dry weather was also important. It helped keep Kipchoge’s body running better throughout the race. A special pair of shoes also played a big part. According to The New York Times, the shoes Kipchoge wore were designed to help anyone wearing them in a race perform much better.
③One other key to this achievement was Kipchoge’s pacing strategy (节奏策略). He ran with a dream team formed by sports scientists. Five runners formed a V-shape in front of Kipchoge, reducing drag (空气阻力), and two runners followed directly behind to push him forward. Kipchoge stayed in the centre of the formation (队形). The team changed members every five kilometres. There was also a car driving 15 metres in front of everyone, casting a bright light on the road to keep them on track.
④“Few world records today are technologyfree,” noted The Telegraph. Though hard work is still the most important part of sportsmen’s achievements, science and technology are helping them do better.

4 . Something unexpected happened in the summer of my eleventh year. The home I had grown up in burned to the ground in the middle of the night. Thankfully, my mom, dad, grandma, brothers and I escaped (幸免于难) along with our dogs. Yet, we had nothing but the night clothes we were sleeping in. I spent the rest of that night with a friend of our family. I tried unsuccessfully to sleep in a bed in his house. I was too scared.
The next day my mom brought me a few T-shirts and pairs of jeans that another friend gave to her. One pair of them was too short and the other pair too long, but I didn't care. At least I had some clothes again. My dad returned to our broken home to see what he could find. The only thing he could save was my mom's rings.
To spend the summer my dad rented (租借) us a big house on the same road as our old house had been. As we moved in, our friends and our community continued to donate ( 捐 赠 ) all they could to help us get back on our feet. There were more clothes, furniture (家具), food, money, and even some books for me to read. Love was around us.
Looking back now I am thankful for all we went through that summer because it taught me so much about life, love and people. It showed me that when you have nothing left but love, for the first time you see that love is enough.

Teenagers especially enjoy these videos. More than 50 percent of Grade 7 and 8 students said they enjoy watching these short videos. About 47 percent of them have posted their own videos, according to a recent report by the China National Youth Palace Association.
The videos let teenagers see funny and exciting things they wouldn’t usually see. Many teens like to share the fun things they do with others as well. For example, a 12-year-old user named Xiao Qianyu has posted videos showing her learning jazz dance. This has won her many fans.
However the videos can also cause trouble. Some students spend too much time watching them and not enough time studying. Some videos are vulgar and not suitable for teenagers.
To deal with this problem, Douyin added a new function (功能). It locks the app if someone uses the app for over two hours a day. Also the government asked companies to make more strict rules for these apps and cancel the unsuitable videos.

Jake couldn’t find his ski anywhere. In the end, he decided to take off his other ski and walk down the mountain. But he couldn’t work out the right way to go.
It was now getting dark and he was a long way from any place of safety. He knew that he might die that night in the cold temperatures. But Jake kept calm. At home, Jake watched a lot of programmes about living in difficult situations. He remembered the advice from these programmes and knew that he should build a hole in the snow. He made a hole so the wind couldn’t blow into it. Outside his hole, the temperature fell to a dangerous -15℃ that night, but inside it Jake was safe from the cold.
After the long evening passed, Jake began to think his way out. He had to get down the mountain. The TV programmes always said, “If you are lost, you should find someone else’s tracks(足迹) through the snow and follow them.” “I wanted to live my life.” Remembered Jake. “So I got up and I found some ski tracks and I followed those.” He walked and walked and finally saw lights. …
His mum was very happy when she heard his son was saved. Amazingly, Jake didn’t even have to go to hospital. He got through the terrible experience without any injuries.
