1 . There is great excitement and argument(争论)over Artificial Intelligence(AI, 人工智能). The argument about whether robots will replace teachers in the classroom is very heated. Some people think it is sure to happen in the next ten years. Others think that the value a good teacher brings, not only to the classroom setting. but in developing a child’s confidence and creativity outside lessons, cannot be easily replaced.
AI is not new for us and is already being used successfully in many fields, such as medicine, science and so on. So what does this mean for our future? In my view, AI will help kids to think more freely and creatively. Can AI possibly cut down the teaching work in the future, too? Of course. Our teachers are always busy preparing materials for their lessons, Just imagine how happy they would be if they don’t have to copy hundreds of paper, but instead, have this task or others done by machines.
However, most importantly, I do not believe AI will be able to imitate the human mental condition totally, especially emotional intelligence(情商). What makes learning unforgettable is shared experience, human interaction(互相作用), and long-lasting positive relationships. For example, experienced teachers can comfort a student if he has suffered a serious loss. But it hasn’t been proved that robots can imitate this well.
I also believe we need to continue to celebrate our kids’ personality and their ability not only to make decisions but also make the right decisions. These are skills that they can get as they get more life experience and are given the space to experiment.
To what degree can teachers use AI in their classes? You can have all the data(数据)you like with the help of AI, but great teachers will also need to depend on their own feelings.

2 . When you hear the word “hero”, do you think of someone with super powers or someone you know?
“A hero is someone who, in spite of(尽管) weakness, doubt or not always knowing the answers, goes ahead and overcomes anyway.” said US actor Christopher Reeve, who was best known for playing Superman .
Facing the spread of novel coronavirus(新冠病毒), everyone is afraid of deadly disease. But some choose to hold their fear down, stand out and fight the virus. They are known as “heroes in harm’ s way(最美逆行者).”
Medical workers and scientists are always on the frontlines. Experts Zhong Nanshan, 84, and Li Lanjuan, 73, for example, have worked day and night to develop rapid test kits(快速检测盒)and treat severe(重症的) patients, doctor Zhang Wenhong from Shanghai tries to tell the public about the virus in a humorous way ; Li Wenliang and some other medical workers even lost their lives while fighting the epidemic(流行病).
Besides these familiar names, many heroes are still unknown, although they have taken risks and played their own part. Construction(建筑)workers race against the time to build makeshift hospitals; volunteers try hard to help; and thousands of media workers keep the public the news and inspiring(感人的)stories.
The battle against an epidemic is hard. But as long as there are heroes and historic deeds, victory will come for sure.

3 . Many children like to go hiking (徒步旅行). Why? Because they can be free from school and their homework. They can also see beautiful views (风景), play with friends or family and so on. If you want to go for a hike, how can you have a happy one?
First, the weather must be fine. Fine weather is the most important for a happy hike. If the weather is fine, you can do a lot of things, like going bike riding and swimming in the river.
Second, go with the people you like. If you go hiking with the people you don’t like, you won’t have a great time.
Third, find the right place. Different people have different ideas about the places. For me, I would like to go for a hike at the seaside(海边).

4 . ① Many homes have cameras to protect them from danger. The cameras can tell the owners if someone has entered. But the cameras do not know whether the person is a family member, a friend, a postman or a criminal.
② But a new camera made by a French company can recognize faces. It can tell parents at work that their children have returned from school, or that the mail has been sent to their home. It can also tell them if a stranger has entered their home. When family members enter a home, the smart camera “recognizes” them and sends information to the owner’s phone. The owner can choose to see the video then or later. But if an unknown person enters a home, the camera will send a warning sound on the owner’s phone.
③ This is what happened recently to a smart home camera owner named Damien. He lives in Paris.
④ “On a Friday I was at work, having a big monthly meeting when my phone moved. At first I told myself ‘Oh, it must be a wrong warn,’ but my phone was telling me there was a face that the camera did not recognize. Something was happening in my house!”
⑤ “I saw a person I did not know with his shoes on, which is not allowed in my apartment . I watched it on the video. I felt quite surprised. I hurried back home as fast as possible and called the police on the way. Thanks to the smart camera, the criminal was caught soon,” said Damien.

5 . Something unexpected happened in the summer of my eleventh year. The home I had grown up in burned to the ground in the middle of the night. Thankfully, my mom, dad, grandma, brothers and I escaped (幸免于难) along with our dogs. Yet, we had nothing but the night clothes we were sleeping in. I spent the rest of that night with a friend of our family. I tried unsuccessfully to sleep in a bed in his house. I was too scared.
The next day my mom brought me a few T-shirts and pairs of jeans that another friend gave to her. One pair of them was too short and the other pair too long, but I didn't care. At least I had some clothes again. My dad returned to our broken home to see what he could find. The only thing he could save was my mom's rings.
To spend the summer my dad rented (租借) us a big house on the same road as our old house had been. As we moved in, our friends and our community continued to donate ( 捐 赠 ) all they could to help us get back on our feet. There were more clothes, furniture (家具), food, money, and even some books for me to read. Love was around us.
Looking back now I am thankful for all we went through that summer because it taught me so much about life, love and people. It showed me that when you have nothing left but love, for the first time you see that love is enough.

6 . High-tech machines have made life easier for millions around the world. However, some people still prefer low-tech ways of doing things. Here’s an example of why this is happening. You can microwave a frozen (冷冻的) hamburger in 60 seconds. However, it won’t taste as good as one you cook on the stove. And if you’re in that much of a hurry, you probably won’t take time to toast (烘烤) the bread. High-tech cooking saves time, but it doesn’t make better-tasting meals.
Most people get their news from high-tech sources (来源) like television or the Internet. This has many advantages. For example, electronic news is more up to date than newspapers or magazines. It’s also more exciting to see live and videotaped news events than photographs.
However, newspapers and magazines have some important advantages. They give more background and details. They also let you read the parts that are important to you and skip (跳过)the rest. Other high-tech time savers have similar disadvantages. For example, most people use the phone or email to stay in touch with friends and family members who live in other places. But when you use the Internet or the phone, you don’t always think carefully about what you are saying, and sometimes you forget the important things you want to communicate. Similarly, when you do your homework on the computer, you needn't check your spelling by yourself. However, you are so busy with the computer that they don’t pay enough attention to the actual words they are writing.

7 . People who have been to colleges may have written graduation papers or other kinds of papers during their four-year college life. It isn’t an easy thing for many college students, even teachers. However, a new study suggests that many of today’s college students have never experienced the challenge of writing very long papers. This may not be good news. Higher education can test a person’s academic(学业的) abilities in many ways. Most study programs require research, class discussions, and group projects. But that used to be one of the most important parts of higher education for years in the US. For example, if you asked almost any professor or student, they would likely tell you that writing was one of the skills most often examined at colleges and universities. College students should master(掌握) this skill, as it may be helpful for their work in the future.
The study includes data(数据) collected from 1,140 students at four-year colleges and universities in the US. The students were asked about the kinds of long-form writing they had done and the amount of writing training they had received. Nearly one third of them had never been required to write a paper or over.
James Moses is the president of Primary Research Group. He says ten pages or over might seem like an unnecessarily large amount of writing, especially for students in fields like Maths or science. In fact, he argues, many students avoid longer papers by choosing subjects in which they are less likely to be required.
Moses says students are likely to be attracted to those fields because many of today’s highest paying jobs are at big technology companies. But he says that many students fail to understand that there is still a great need for skilled writers in the job market. And long-form writing tasks do more than measuring how much a person can write about any given thing. They are helpful to students in many ways.
Dan Melzer, a writing teacher in University of California, agrees. He says long-form writing tasks can teach useful skills even in fields that may not seem to have to do with writing.
1. What does the new study mainly show?A.Higher education can test many students’ abilities. |

After that, Maggie went to the beach to collect sea shells. She never thought how fast time went by. Two hours later, she sat down on a rock beside a little pool, and Dan's large dog Rover jumped down from a rock! He made a loud noise, and then began to pull her coat gently. “Rover wishes me to leave here, I see,” she said, and she rose from the rock and began to go home. However, she found the places she had got down easily was now very difficult to climb up, and because the tide(潮水) had been in for some time, she found some of the stones wet and smooth.

He came in a boat and brought Maggie and Rover safely to the land!
“It was the penny that did it, Madam,” Dan said to Maggie's mother later. “I saw Rover looking at her when she put the penny so kindly into my hand—just as if he would have said, ‘Rover will be your friend now, little girl.’ And I am thinking he has looked after her all day, because he never came near me after that.”
