2 . Abby’s Lesson

① When talking about obeying rules, Abby will never forget her experience with her father and her pet Tobias, a small mouse at the airport years ago.

② One day, Abby’s father was taking her to visit her grandmother and they are not allowed to take a mouse into another country. It was a rule. But Abby put the mouse into her sock in her bag secretly without telling her dad. When they arrived at the airport, they had to be checked by the X-ray machine. Abby felt her legs shaking and her heart beating fast. Unexpectedly, they passed.

③ On the plane, Abby opened up the bag after her dad and the woman next to her fell asleep. Tobias was excited to jump out from the bag. He landed upside down on the woman’s knee. The woman screamed loudly so that many people on the plane heard the voice. At that moment, Abby put Tobias into her bag quickly. But her dad didn’t know at all but slept.

④ After they landed, Abby’s dad ticked (打勾) NO on a paper to: “Are you bringing any live animals into the country?” But a man at the X-ray machine asked Abby to open her bag. Abby had to open and pulled out the sock. Then the man led Abby and her father into a small, dark room. There were some people in uniforms. Tobias was in the sock on the desk. One police officer talked to Abby’s dad. “This is very serious,” he said, “You have tried to smuggle (偷运) an animal into this country and you have lied on the paper.” “It’s my fault,” Abby said in a small voice, “Dad didn’t know I had Tobias.” The police officer stared at her, “What’s your name? Have you ever been in trouble before?” Abby opened her mouth, but no sound came out. At last, her dad had to pay a big fine (罚款) for what Abby did. It cost a lot of money. And Tobias had to go into quarantine (隔离检疫) for six months.

⑤ It must be a real lesson for Abby. From then on, she never breaks the rules any more.

3 . Work is helpful to health. Scientists find that the hard-working people live longer than those who have no jobs. Studies show that the jobless are in poorer health than job-holders. The women have jobs are healthier than housewives.

Why is work good for health? It is because work keeps people busy, away from feeling lonely. Researches show that people feel unhappy and worried when they have nothing to do. The happiest people are those who are busy. Many high achievers who love their jobs feel they are the happiest when they are working hard. They work as a bridge between their dream and reality, so they have energy every day. By work, people get to know each other. By taking part in all kinds of activities, they find friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health. The loss(丧失)of work means the loss of everything. It makes people down and it will cause more illnesses.

Besides, work makes one feel hopeful and proud. When a writer finishes his writing or a doctor successfully operates on a patient or a teacher sees his students grow, they are very happy.

From the above, we can come to a conclusion: the more you work, the happier and healthier you will be.

5 . ①It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better-paid jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t.

②It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people. Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life getting education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time at school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and maths need not be taught in detail(详细地)either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.

③Education is well-rounded(全面的)and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of humans. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch good plays and take an interest in the world.

④I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason.

1. The earliest education was probably to ________.
A.make a man lead a better life
B.teach a man to write and read
C.make people get a way of living
D.teach people to read good books
2. What’s the main idea of Para 3?
A.The advantages of education.B.The process of education.
C.The ways of getting education.D.The people for getting the education.
3. What’s the structure of the passage?
A.B.
C.D.
4. Which is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Education can improve a man.
B.Making a living is the main reason of education.
C.Little educated people can find jobs easily.
D.People can get education in a short time.

After the celebrations, it’s traditional to make plans for the new year on January 1st. 7 . ①When it comes to Chinese students considering studying in foreign countries, many of them usually believe that life will be easy and enjoyable. Unfortunately, it’s likely that students with those beliefs will be disappointed very soon after landing at the airport.

②So, what are the problems you may have, and how can you deal with them?

③Teaching and learning styles in America are very different from those in China, requiring more critical thinking(批判性思维) and teamwork. In a normal American classroom, one project might be done by a study group in which every person has his/her own responsibility.

④So don’t worry about your language or any grammar mistakes. Just watch what other students do, and don’t be afraid to ask any questions. The discussions, or sometimes ever arguments, that your group members and you hold are likely to be the beginning of a friendship.

⑤Beside schoolwork, another important thing faced by overseas students is homesickness or loneliness. You may miss your parents’ cooking, your pets, or even your old bed. Being away from home can create bitter feelings, especially when faced with the challenges of getting used to a new environment.

⑥What I strongly suggest is to try hard to deal with these feelings. Be open to new friendships. Sign up for school activities, and give yourself permission to enjoy life at school, even if you miss home a lot. Be organized and keep a diary to check your progress. Write down three new things that you’re grateful for every evening, as well as three things you’re looking forward to every morning.

⑦Studying abroad is never simple. In fact, there will be many difficulties every day. But I’m sure you will overcome your difficulties and make your time overseas a success.

8 . Water cycle

①What is the water cycle? How does it affect (影响) us? The water cycle is very important to our existence. A cycle is another word for circle. The water cycle is like one continuous (连续的) circle. Water can be found in the form of liquid (drinking water), gas (vapor or steam), or a solid (ice or snow) at any given part of the water cycle. There are three phases that make up the water cycle. These phases are condensation, precipitation, and evaporation.

②Condensation is when water vapor in the air turns to liquid. Temperature and air pressure have a lot to do with condensation. Warm air can hold more water than cool air, and therefore the water vapor condenses (凝结) into small droplets as the temperature falls.

③Precipitation is what happens when the water vapor condenses into large droplets (水滴). Gravity (重力) pulls on the liquid droplets and causes them to fall to the ground. Precipitation can be in the form of snow, sleet, rain, or hail. Air temperature and wind patterns decide the type of precipitation.

④Evaporation is when liquid water changes to a gas. This happens with an increase (增长) in temperature or a dry wind blowing across the water. Gas rises into the air and forms clouds, sometimes it even forms fog.

1. According to the passage and the picture, which statement is FALSE?
A.Air temperature and wind patterns decide the type of precipitation.

9 . Fights (打架) at school sometimes happen. But how can you keep away from a fight? Here’s something you can do.

Be calm. Sometimes, you feel so angry that you really want to teach somebody a lesson. But being angry can’t solve problems. Neither can a fight. Instead, it may bring you more problems. In the school, everyone involved (卷入) in a fight will be punished, no matter who started it. There are no winners in a fight.

Shout loudly. If you know someone is coming up behind you to attack, turn toward the person with your hands up in front of your body and loudly say “stop”, before walking away. Loud voice can usually make the attacker calm down. If the person doesn’t stop, cry for help by calling out the name of a teacher whose office is nearby.

________ Your friend may ask you to join in a fight. Learn to say no. Helping him fight is not really helpful to him. If you really want to give him a hand, try to ask him to give it up. Also, you can tell him if he gets involved in a fight, he may get hurt and be punished. Then, try to learn why he wants a fight and help him find a right way to deal with the problem.

If you follow my advice above, you may avoid being involved in a fight at school.

1. Which of the following sentences can be put in the ________?

10 . Mark Zuckerberg, who starts the social network Facebook, often wears jeans and a T-shirt to work, including to important business meetings. Not everyone agrees with him. Some people say he doesn’t look serious this way.

Harvard Business School researcher Franccsca Gino, has a different idea. While most people seem to think that dressing differently from those around you generally has a bad influence, she believes it can actually have a positive (积极的)effect. And, she has done experiments(实验) to support her idea. When her researchers, wearing sportswear, visited the expensive shops in Italy, they were usually viewed as wealthier and more important people than those who were well-dressed in designer clothes.

Do people always view less formal(正式的) clothing more positively? Researchers in France took their research out into the street to the general(普通的)public. The video they made shows an actor dressed in a well-cut suit and shiny shoes. While walking along the road, he begins to cough badly, stops to catch his breath and falls down. Before he even calls for help, people rush to help him. In another video, the actor appears at the same crowded place and repeats the actions in exactly the same way. But this time, no one comes to help. What’s the difference? He’s wearing untidy clothes and looks like homeless person. In a situation like this, the clothes you’re wearing could mean the difference between life and death.

It seems that our clothing doesn’t only change the way others view us, but also the way we see ourselves. In an experiment testing students’ ability to pay attention to details(细节), the group wearing white lab coats did the best. Why? Researchers told them that they were wearing the doctors’ coats. The experiment didn’t show whether such influences would last long. More experiments are needed in the future before we decide to make the doctors’ coats a must of fashion.

1. Mark Zuckerberg is not considered serious by some people because _______.
A.he does not listen to others’ adviceB.he sets up network of video games
C.he wears jeans and a T-shirt to workD.he often plays jokes at business meetings
2. Which of the following is Gino’s opinion according to Paragraph 2?
A.It is necessary to buy expensive clothes.
B.Wearing less formal clothes is in fact good.
C.It is bad to dress differently from people around you.
D.Wearing sports clothes makes you look less important.
3. In Paragraph 3, the wrier proves(证明) his (her) opinion mainly _______.
A.by giving reasonsB.by using pictures
C.by comparing factsD.by listing numbers
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A.What we wear makes a difference.
B.Formal clothing makes a wise man.
C.Our value depends on what we wear.
D.Our clothing influences our characters.
