1 . We all want to live in good neighborhoods, but not everyone lives in a good neighborhood. How can you build a better community for yourself and your family? There are many things you can do.
Paint your intersection (十字路口). A street intersection is not something you think of as interesting. However, In Portland, people in some neighborhoods have made them really worth stopping for. Some paint, creative people and a bright design are all it takes to bring neighbors together and produce something the whole community can be proud of.
Make a poetry box. The idea is simple, really-create a box with a glass or clear plastic front. Put this box on a post. Write your own poem or print out your favorite classic and display it in the box for all your neighbors to see. You can also set up a drop box and encourage neighbors to write their own poems and drop them in the box. Display the poems from your neighbors as the poems come in.
Set up a tool library. How often do you need a leaf blower? Or a chain saw? And how often do you use that electric cake mixer? Too libraries have space where neighbors can drop their hardly used tools to share. Check with a local business, community center or church group about space that can house a tool library.
Turn your front yard into your backyard. How often do you meet your neighbors in your backyard? Probably never. Moving your typical (典型的) backyard activities to the front immediately makes you more visible (可见的). You can create front-yard gardens, build community benches and even just barbecue in your front yard. They are all great ways to connect with your community.
With effort, you’ll make your neighborhood a much better place.

3 . Traffic lights are red, yellow and green. They are very important signals (信号). Traffic lights are usually placed at busy street corners to help control traffic. Sometimes, they are on streets near schools and shops, too. Most young children are taught what each of the colored lights means, so everybody can stay safe.
The first traffic signals were used for trains. The signals were put alongside railway tracks (轨道). The color red was used to mean “stop” because it warned people of danger. A red light was also the easiest color to see from a distance. Train drivers could see the red “stop” light ahead and had enough time to slow down and stop their trains. A green light was used to mean “take care” and a white light meant “go”.
However, there were many dangerous accidents on the train tracks. Some train drivers thought a star shining in the night sky was a white light that meant “go”. So the signals were swapped. The “go” light was changed to green and the “take care” light was changed to white.
During these times, people travelled by train or in carts pulled by horses. Years later, when cars were built, people began to drive them because they could travel much faster than horses. However, the road rules for drivers were not very clear and many people were hurt crossing the roads. Yellow warning signs had to be placed beside the roads to remind drivers to take care and allow people to cross safely.
Today, towns and cities all over the world have traffic lights. Red and green lights match the signals used on the railways. Yellow lights are easy to see, so they are used to warn drivers that they should slow down and prepare to stop.

4 . How would you feel if someone decided to take away your park? Well that's what's happening in my community. There's a park that some people want to turn into a golf course (高尔夫球场). Let me tell you why I think it's a bad idea.
First, a park is meant to be for the whole community. Not everyone likes golf, so not everyone will get to use the park. This isn't fair. A community park should have open spaces for everyone to use.
Second, to make way for the golf course, lots of playground equipment (设施) will have to be moved or knocked down, which is a waste of time and money. It's also a waste of perfectly good equipment. The swings, for example, will probably just end up as litter.
Third, what about giving young people something to do? Not all kids are crazy about golf. At the moment, the park has a skating place and a playground. These attract lots of kids from the community. This means that they will stay at home and turn on a video game rather than get some exercise. It also means that they might be out on the street causing trouble. Wouldn't it be better to give them something to do at the park?
Finally, golf is expensive. Building a golf course and maintaining (维护)it costs a lot of money. Who is going to pay to maintain the golf course? What about those people who can't afford to join a golf club? That means that the golf course will only be available to people with lots of money.
Turning our park into a golf course is a bad idea. I suggest we have a community meeting before plans go any further.

7 . Apollo, a 5monthold pit bull puppy(比特犬), is getting extra hugs today, after saving his owner's girlfriend from a terrible attack.
According to the New York Post, 18yearold Maya Fairweather was visiting her boyfriend, Carlos Guzman, at his apartment in the Red Hook neighborhood in Brooklyn New York, on Monday night. Around 10 pm, the teen decided to take Guzman's puppy, Apollo, for a walk.
Once she reached a nearby Park, Fairweather let the pit bull off his rope so he could run around on the grass. Meanwhile, she kept a close watch on him, listening to music through her headphones. “I felt someone pulling my headphones,” she told the New York Post. “I thought it was my boyfriend joking me, so I turned around and smiled—but it wasn't my boyfriend.”
Instead it was an unfamiliar man, who started attacking Fairweather, pushed her to the ground and tried to control her arms. After struggling with the attacker for a few moments, the girl was saved by her protective puppy. Apollo raced to the scene and bit the attacker's leg.
The puppy bit down so hard that the stranger was forced to take his attention off Fairweather to try to shake the dog off. The girl used the moment of distraction(分散注意力)to run across the street and escape.
Finally, Apollo set the attacker free, who ran away. “He was protective,” Fairweather said about the dog's heroic deed. “I think it would have been a lot worse. I wouldn't have been so lucky.”
After that, Fairweather, who was not harmed during the attack, returned to Guzman's apartment with Apollo. Guzman's sister took Fairweather to a local police station to report the attack. The police are now searching for the man.
Fairweather is really grateful for the role Apollo played in her escape, but is surprised that the dog came to her rescue. “He is a sweet dog. I never thought he would bite anyone. He never bit anyone before. He's usually very friendly and just jumps on everyone,” she said.

In the last century, differnet natural disasters have robbed several cultural heritage(遗产) from us. On WeChat, some people say, “What a pity that we cannot see the damaged parts of the wonders anymore.” But people can see them in a new way---through a video game. In this game, the player can travel to one city after another and enter the buildings exactly like they are in reality, and see the wonders as they were before the fire.
Maybe digital technology(数字技术) could help protect cultural heritage better. This idea dates back to the 1990s and the necessary technology has continued to develop since then. By scanning(扫 描) the ancient buildings, building 3D models, as well as measuring everything, engineers can make a copy exactly as the real one.
As computers and smart phones are popular, the digital copy has great value. First, it allows tourists to feel the cultural heritage without touching them, which helps protect them. A new study warns that about 30% of the world people may not have enough water by the year 2025.
A private American organization called Population Action International (PAI) did the new study. It says more than three hundred and thirty-five million people lack enough water now. These people live in twenty-eight countries. Most of the countries are in Africa or the Middle East.
PAI researchers Robert Engelman says by the year 2025， about three thousand million people may face water problems. At least 18 more countries are expected to lack enough water. The need for water keeps increasing. Yet the amount(数量) of water on the earth stays the same.
The report says lack of water in the future may cause several problems. It may increase health problems. Lack of water often means drinking water is not safe. Mr. Engelman says there are problems all over the world because of diseases， such as cholera， which are carried in water. Lack of water may also lead to more international conflict(冲突). Countries may have to fight for water in the future. Some countries now get sixty percent of their water from other countries. The Population Action International study gives several solutions to the water problem. One
