1 . Abby’s Lesson

① When talking about obeying rules, Abby will never forget her experience with her father and her pet Tobias, a small mouse at the airport years ago.

② One day, Abby’s father was taking her to visit her grandmother and they are not allowed to take a mouse into another country. It was a rule. But Abby put the mouse into her sock in her bag secretly without telling her dad. When they arrived at the airport, they had to be checked by the X-ray machine. Abby felt her legs shaking and her heart beating fast. Unexpectedly, they passed.

③ On the plane, Abby opened up the bag after her dad and the woman next to her fell asleep. Tobias was excited to jump out from the bag. He landed upside down on the woman’s knee. The woman screamed loudly so that many people on the plane heard the voice. At that moment, Abby put Tobias into her bag quickly. But her dad didn’t know at all but slept.

④ After they landed, Abby’s dad ticked (打勾) NO on a paper to: “Are you bringing any live animals into the country?” But a man at the X-ray machine asked Abby to open her bag. Abby had to open and pulled out the sock. Then the man led Abby and her father into a small, dark room. There were some people in uniforms. Tobias was in the sock on the desk. One police officer talked to Abby’s dad. “This is very serious,” he said, “You have tried to smuggle (偷运) an animal into this country and you have lied on the paper.” “It’s my fault,” Abby said in a small voice, “Dad didn’t know I had Tobias.” The police officer stared at her, “What’s your name? Have you ever been in trouble before?” Abby opened her mouth, but no sound came out. At last, her dad had to pay a big fine (罚款) for what Abby did. It cost a lot of money. And Tobias had to go into quarantine (隔离检疫) for six months.

⑤ It must be a real lesson for Abby. From then on, she never breaks the rules any more.

②So, what are the problems you may have, and how can you deal with them?

③Teaching and learning styles in America are very different from those in China, requiring more critical thinking(批判性思维) and teamwork. In a normal American classroom, one project might be done by a study group in which every person has his/her own responsibility.

④So don’t worry about your language or any grammar mistakes. Just watch what other students do, and don’t be afraid to ask any questions. The discussions, or sometimes ever arguments, that your group members and you hold are likely to be the beginning of a friendship.

Being away from home can create bitter feelings, especially when faced with the challenges of getting used to a new environment.

⑥What I strongly suggest is to try hard to deal with these feelings. Be open to new friendships. Sign up for school activities, and give yourself permission to enjoy life at school, even if you miss home a lot. Be organized and keep a diary to check your progress. Write down three new things that you’re grateful for every evening, as well as three things you’re looking forward to every morning.

Failure is the way to success. It helps us to touch the sky, teaches us to survive and shows us a specific way. Success brings money, fame and self-respect.

Hope is what keeps life going. Parents always hope their children will do well. Hope makes us dream. Hope teaches us not to despair even in the darkest hours, because after every night there is a day.

In one year, when I am sending my daughter on her first day of school, I will trust her teacher that she will return safely. Knowing that her teacher is an adult she can trust, who cares about her and who makes her excited to learn and return to school the next day. So I prepare to send my child out into the big world where she will meet new children and teachers, ready to learn and explore this big world.

However, before she becomes a real student, I'd like to share with you what I hope for her teachers.

Develop strong relationships with your students. Really get to know them and show an interest in them, their friends and their family life.

Know your students. Learn about their dreams and encourage them. Find out your students' strengths (长处)and offer chances to use them and feel that joy of doing something they both like and are good at.

5 . Could the students from less developed areas(不发达地区)in central and western China get the same educational chances (机会) as those in big cities in the east? Could the children in poor rural areas (农村地区) develop as well as those in rich cities? Maybe the answers were “No” in the past. But now, China is trying to change (改变)the situation(情况).

To help rural students grow taller and stronger, China’s Nutrition Improvement Program (中国营养改善计划) started in 2011. According to the program, a lot more money was spent improving students’ meals. More than 36 million students from 134,000 primary and junior high schools in poor rural areas have benefited from the program. They are provided (提供) with healthy food like eggs and milk from Monday to Friday at school. And the result of a survey shows that the students in those areas are much taller and stronger than before.

It is true that there were differences between less developed areas and developed areas in education before. Recently, The Guideline for Popularizing High School Education (2017-2020) has come out. Students from rural and poor areas also have more chances to get higher education. A special college program makes it possible for more students from those areas to go to key (重点的) colleges and universities.

6 .

In the 1800s, people began hunting whales in large numbers for their meat, bones, skin and blubber(脂). Before electricity, many people used oil lamps for light. Whale blubber could be turned into lamp oil.

During the 1930-1931 whaling season, as many as 29,000 blue whales were hunted. Scientists believe humans killed 350,000 blue whales during the years.

In 1966, the International Whaling Commission forbade the hunting of blue whales. However, some people went on hunting them. As whaling equipment and ships improved, many more blue whales were killed.

Scientists are not sure of the exact population of blue whales today. They think it is between 10,000 and 25,000. It is clear that the number of blue whales is quite small.

Now blue whales are protected from whaling, but they still face other problems. Blue whales are sometimes hit by large ships. Some of them die from the accidents caused by these ships. They also cut their skin and become sick in fishing gear(渔具) that is left behind in the ocean.

7 . Most teens try very hard to look good. They wear beautiful clothes, cool shoes and fashionable sunglasses. They may want to stay home from school because of the smallest pimple(粉刺). I know because I used to focus only on my appearance. However, now I work hard to see more than just my looks. I'll explain why.

Firstly, if you only focus on how you look, you'll also focus only on the appearance of others. As a result, you'll become a person who can't see the truly important characteristics(品质) in others. Some people don't follow the latest fashion trends. If you avoid getting to know them, you'll miss out on many interesting and valuable relationships in your life.

Moreover, if you focus only on your appearance, you'll miss out on chances to improve your abilities. For example, if you spend all your time trying to look fashionable, you won't have any time to become a better musician or improve your grades at school. Even the most attractive people need to have skills to succeed in life.

In addition, focusing only on your looks can make you feel disappointed about yourself. If you don't worry about a pimple on your face, you'll be less likely to feel unhappy about yourself. On the whole, happy people like to communicate with the world in a positive way. Therefore, feeling happy is more important than looking good. You should work hard at feeling good, not just looking good.

I used to focus only on how I looked. However, now I work hard to focus on all the different parts of myself—my appearance, personality, abilities, and so on. So I'm a much happier person. If you take my advice, you'll be a happier person too. Your first step is to look at yourself without a mirror!

A.focusing on your physical appearanceB.improving your abilities and skills
C.seeing all the different parts of yourselfD.cool clothes and fashionable accessories
4. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

8 . When I looked at the grade (分数) on my math paper, I was shocked: a big “65” in bright red ink. As a good student in my teachers’ eyes, I had never received such a terrible grade before.

A month later, Dad asked me again about the report at the dinner table. He looked right into my eyes and asked for an answer. Having no choice, I told him that I had in fact just 65 in my math exam. I told a lie because I didn’t want to let him down.

For a moment, he just looked at me. After a quiet moment, in the end, Dad said, in a hurt voice, “You have already let me down, with your lie. I am not sad at your math score (分数). That is no big deal-no one can be perfect all the time. However, I am very sorry for you. If you can’t be honest with your dad, who can you be honest with? It’s much easier to get a better grade than rebuild (重建) others’ trust in you.”

Dad’s words touched my heart. I took out the report, gave it to him and said sorry to him. My father smiled and touched my head gently, “I’m glad you understand that.” At that time, I knew that my honesty is not only important to myself, but to those around me that truly care about my happiness.

10 . My daughter, Mia, is 16 and learning to drive. Many parents are very worried about letting their absent-minded teenagers be responsible for a fast-moving chunk(大块) of glass and steel. My wife refused to teach her, leaving the task to me.

I’ve learnt a few things. First, Mia didn't know how to drive at all. She didn't even know where to put the key. It was like watching a chimpanzee try to solve a puzzle. Worse, she couldn't remember that D was for drive, and R meant reverse(倒车).

Then came the road rules. Mia likes to sail past stop signs. I had to explain that “STOP means STOP”. Had she actually read the rule book? “Yes,” she said, but she forgot most of it. “It was so boring.” Although I had been driving her around for her whole life, she hadn't learned anything.

Despite these things, I've also learned that I enjoy teaching her. I think I'm pretty good at it. I am much calmer than I thought I would be.

I also enjoy the one-on-one time we have together. We have some good conversations. So far, we have covered her friends’ hairstyles and how stressed she feels after school. I enjoyed communicating with her. The other day we talked about future plans. I asked what she would do if she could choose anything in the world. “I don't know,” she said. “Sometimes I think I might want to be a movie director, but I'm not sure… I don't want to go into an office every day and just sit there.” Then she asked me how much directors earn.

She’s getting away from me. I thought, and I can’t stop her.
