Five Famous Explorers in History

Christopher Columbus (1452 — 1506)

As an Italian explorer, Columbus made four important voyages to the Americas (1st journey was in 1492 to the Bahamas). Sailing in unknown seas, Columbus made humans know about the knowledge of crossing the Atlantic and the Americas.

Roald Amundsen (1872 — 1928)

Amundsen was a Norwegian explorer and an important person during Antarctic exploration. His Antarctic expedition (探险队) of 1910 —1912 discovered the South Pole. In 1926, he led the first successful expedition to reach the North Pole. He also made the first voyage through the Northwest Passage.

John Cabot (1450 — 1499)

Cabot was an Italian voyager and explorer. In 1497, he discovered parts of North America (later named Newfoundland). This is widely considered to be the first European discovery of North America since the Viking journeys of the 11th century.

2 . Most teens try very hard to look good. They wear beautiful clothes, cool shoes and fashionable sunglasses. They may want to stay home from school because of the smallest pimple(粉刺). I know because I used to focus only on my appearance. However, now I work hard to see more than just my looks. I'll explain why.

Firstly, if you only focus on how you look, you'll also focus only on the appearance of others. As a result, you'll become a person who can't see the truly important characteristics(品质) in others. Some people don't follow the latest fashion trends. If you avoid getting to know them, you'll miss out on many interesting and valuable relationships in your life.

Moreover, if you focus only on your appearance, you'll miss out on chances to improve your abilities. For example, if you spend all your time trying to look fashionable, you won't have any time to become a better musician or improve your grades at school. Even the most attractive people need to have skills to succeed in life.

In addition, focusing only on your looks can make you feel disappointed about yourself. If you don't worry about a pimple on your face, you'll be less likely to feel unhappy about yourself. On the whole, happy people like to communicate with the world in a positive way. Therefore, feeling happy is more important than looking good. You should work hard at feeling good, not just looking good.

I used to focus only on how I looked. However, now I work hard to focus on all the different parts of myself—my appearance, personality, abilities, and so on. So I'm a much happier person. If you take my advice, you'll be a happier person too. Your first step is to look at yourself without a mirror!

1. What's the writer's purpose of writing the first paragraph?
A.To introduce his opinion on looks.B.To explain how important your look is.
C.To let you buy more beautiful things.D.To tell you what he used to be like.
2. According to the writer, focusing only on your appearance ________.
A.encourages you to enjoy the worldB.helps you see important points in others
C.causes you to feel proud of yourselfD.stops you from improving your abilities
3. The passage is about the importance of ________.
A.focusing on your physical appearanceB.improving your abilities and skills
C.seeing all the different parts of yourselfD.cool clothes and fashionable accessories
4. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A.B.C.D.

3 . Today, it is a big problem for young people to get fine jobs after they leave university. It is said that there are thousands of different kinds of jobs in the world. But choosing the right one itself often worries young people.

“Finding a job” is not the same as “choosing a job”. Many young people end up in jobs that they are not suitable (合适的) for. Here are a few steps to help you think about jobs which you might enjoy doing after school or university.

First, it is important to know what kind of person you are, which special qualities (品质) make you better than others and what you are interested in. There is a difference between an interest and a skill. If you like art and enjoy looking at pictures, that is an interest. But if you can draw a horse that looks like a horse not a big dog, that is a skill.

Then ask yourself a question, “Of the following three skills-skill with people, skill with information and skill with things, which is my best skill?”

After finding out your best skill, the next step is to research (调查). To find out as many different kinds of jobs as possible, go to the library and read books, magazines and newspapers for information. Ask your friends what they think of the work they do.

The last step is to trust your own ideas and your own thinking! It is your own life, just find the job you really enjoy doing.

1. Paragraph One tells us that it’s ________ to choose a right job.
A.easyB.hardC.necessaryD.different
2. Which of the following can be a skill?
A.You do well in computer programming.B.You enjoy playing the guitar.

3. What is the structure(结构) of this passage?
A.B.C.D.
4. What’s the purpose(意图) of this passage?
A.To tell people how to choose a suitable job.B.To describe the problems of getting fine jobs.
C.To show the steps of finding out your best skills.D.To explain why choosing fine jobs worries people.

4 . A group of swans flew down to a beach where a crow (乌鸦) was jumping around. The crow watched them with disdain (鄙视).

They flew on and on till they couldn’t see the land and there was nothing but water on all sides. The crow was making fewer and fewer comments. He was now so tired that he found it hard to stay in the air, and had to struggle to keep himself from falling into the water.

“No,” said the crow. He knew he had lost the competition. “I’m in trouble because of my pride! If you don’t help me, I’ll lose my life ...”

6 . How do you feel about nature? After spending hours indoors, do you feel better when you visit your local park? Most people think that nature is good for our bodies and brains. However, humans are spending more time inside and less time outside. For example, the number of visitors to Canada's national parks is getting lower every year. And in countries such as the USA, only 10% teenagers can spend time outside every day. Many doctors feel this is a problem in the 2lst century.

As a result, some doctors are studying the connection between nature and health: one example of this is the work of Dr. Matilda in Sweden. The doctor gave people a maths test. During the test, their heart rates(心率)were fast. After the test, one group of people sat in a 3D-vitual-reality(虚拟现实)room for fifteen minutes with pictures and sounds of nature. Their heart rates were slower than people's in the other group.

The virtual touch with nature helped them feel more relaxed. Another god example of how nature is good for health comes from Canada. In Toronto, researchers studied 31,000 people living in the city. In general, they found that healthier people lived near parks.

Because of studies like these, some countries and cities want nature to be part of people's everyday life. In Dubai, for example, there are plans for a new shopping mall with a large garden so shoppers can relax outside with trees, plants and water. In Switzerland, "forest schools" are popular. Many children study their subjects in the forests and do lots of exercise outside.

And South Korea is another good example: it has new forests near its cities and around 13 million people visit these forests every year. So after building cities for so long, perhaps it's now time to start rebuilding nature.

1. The writer starts the passage by __________.

7 .

It was a week before I saw Captain Nemo again. Every morning, I noticed fresh air coming into the rooms and I knew that the Nautilus had surfaced(浮出水面). I would go out and see the sunrise.

Then I received a note from Captain Nemo. He invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island. Ned was excited because he thought there he could find a chance to escape. When I saw Captain Nemo the next day, I asked him why he was so interested in Crespo Island. "I thought you preferred the sea to being on land."

"I do," replied the Captain. "But these forests are under the sea." During breakfast, he explained that he had made diving suits(潜水服)that used special air tanks. These tanks would allow us to stay under the water for ten hours. He had also made lights that worked in electric batteries. When Ned realized that we were not going onto land for our hunting trip, he decided not to come at all.

Conseil and I put on our diving suits, and so did Captain Nemo and one of his men. We stepped into a room and closed the door. The room was filled with water, and another door opened. We must go through it, and we were in the sea floor. It was an amazing experience.

We were about ten meters under the water. The light from the sun reached us. Everything looked very colorful. We walked over the fine sand and enjoyed the colors of the shells, fish and seaweed. Conseil and I followed Captain Nemo and his man as they crossed a large grassy area. We were going deeper and deeper. Two hours later, we were a hundred meters under the water. The suits worked very well, and it was easy to walk and breathe.

At one hundred meters deep, we could still see quite well, and Captain Nemo stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The "trees" in the forest were giant seaweed, and all their branches were vertical(垂直的). We could not stop looking at them. Fish swam around the branches like birds in a forest. Small shrubs(灌木) grew under the large seaweed trees. Some of them had flowers.

We walked through this forest for about an hour, and then we lay down to rest. I was not hungry, but I was very sleepy. We all slept, and when we woke up, we walked further.

8 . One thing that could help us to recover from tiredness is sleep. And sleeping is the favorite hobby of most people today. Studies show that the way people sleep at night decides the type of personality they have. Robert Phipps, a body language expert, has named four sleeping positions that influence personality.

Phipps found that worriers, those who stress the most, are likely to sleep in the fetal position. He found that this is the most common bedtime position, with nearly 58 percent of people sleeping on their side with knees up and head down. The more we curl up, the more comfort we are seeking.

The second most common position is the log. People sleep with a straight body, with arms at each side. Nearly 28 percent of people sleep this way and they often feel harder to move their body when they wake up. “The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking is and you are unwilling to change, which means you make things harder for yourself,” according to Phipps.

Yearner sleepers are next on the list. About 25 percent of people sleep in this style-on their side with arms stretched out in front, looking as if they are chasing their dreams or perhaps being chased themselves, “Yearners are always expecting the best results.” explained Phipps. “These people often wake up refreshed and they are willing to face the challenges of the day ahead.”

Perhaps the strangest sleeping style is the freefaller position. This sleeping position makes up 17 percent of the population. They sleep face down on the stomach. “These people,” according to Phipps, “feel like they have little control over their life.” Not only is this the strangest sleeping style, but also the least comfortable, and people may wake up feeling tired and have no energy.

In conclusion, Phipps has only one more thing to add, “A good sleep sets us up for the following day and our sleeping positions can decide how we feel when we wake up.”

9 . ①The twentieth century saw greater changes than any century before: changes for the better, changes for the worse; changes that brought a lot of benefits (好处) to human beings, changes that put man in danger. Many things caused the changes, but, in my opinion, the most important was the progress in science.

②Scientific research in physics and biology has vastly broadened our views. It has given us a deeper knowledge of the structure of matter and of the universe; it has brought us a better understanding of the nature of life and of its continuous development. Technology in the application (应用) of science has made big advancesthat have benefited us in nearly every part of life.

③The continuation of such activities in the twenty-first century will result in even greater advantages to human beings: in pure science —a wider and deeper knowledge in all fields of learning; in applied science —a more reasonable sharing of material benefits, and better protection of the environment.

④Sadly, however, there is another side to the picture. The creativity of science has been employed in doing damage to mankind. The application of science and technology to the development and production of weapons of mass destruction (大规模杀伤武器) has created a real danger to the continued existence (存在) of the human race on this planet. We have seen this happen in the case of nuclear weapons. Although their actual use has so far occurred only in the Second World War, the number of nuclear weapons that were produced and made ready for use was so large that if the weapons had actually been used, the result could have been the ruin of the human race, as well as of many kinds of animals.

⑤William Shakespeare said, “The web of our life is of a mingled yarn (纱线), good and ill together.” The above brief review of the application of only one part of human activities — science seems to prove what Shakespeare said. But does it have to be so? Must the ill always go together with the good? Are we biologically programmed for war?

1. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A.B.C.D.
2. From the fourth paragraph, we can infer (推断) that .
A.a great many nuclear weapons were actually used for war
B.a large number of nuclear weapons should have been used for war
C.the author is doubtful about the ruin of human beings by nuclear weapons
D.the author is anxious (焦虑的) about the huge number of nuclear weapons on the earth
3. The underlined word "mingled" in the last paragraph most probably means .
A.simpleB.mixedC.sadD.happy
4. What do you think the author is most likely to suggest if he continues to write?
A.Further application of science to war.
B.More reading of William Shakespeare.
C.Proper use of science in the new century.
D.Effective ways to separate the good from the ill.

"Then I was placed on a rolling wheel and suddenly I went around and around. 'Stop!' I cried, but the master only nodded."

"Then he put me in the oven. I had never felt so hot. I could see him through the opening and I could read his words, 'Not yet.' "

"Finally the door opened, and he took me out and put me on a shelf. Then he brushed me and put me back into the oven. This time it was twice as hot. I begged. I cried. I could see him through the opening nodding his head, saying, 'Not yet.' "

If I hadn't put you in the oven, you would have broken. If I hadn't brushed you all over, you would not have any color in your life. If I hadn't put you back in that oven for the second time, you wouldn't be kept for very long because the hardness would not have held. Now you are a finished product. You are what I had in mind when I first started with you."
