1 . Chinese people are eating too much salt. On average, people in China eat about 10. 5 grams of salt each day, much higher than the 6 grams recommended(建议)by Chinese Dietary Guidelines(2016).

China now has one of the highest salt intakes(摄入量) in the world. To fix this, China had the first salt reduction(减少) guide for its food industry.

If the guide is followed properly, the average salt intake for Chinese people will drop by 20 percent by 2030. The guide calls for food companies to lower the salt content in their products by improving their production techniques(技术) and adjusting(调整) flavors.

The salt we take in mainly comes from processed(加工的)food. For example, a 104-gram can of Lay’s classic potato chips has about 0. 66 grams of salt in it, which accounts for over 10 percent of the recommended daily salt intake. A 100-gram bag of Kangshifu instant noodles has nearly 2 grams of salt.

A small amount of salt makes food taste better and is important for good health, but eating too much increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks(心脏病)and strokes(中风), the Xinhua News Agency reported.

Less salt leads to better health. And there’s no need to worry that food will be less tasty in the future. A study by the Monell Chemical Senses Center in the United States found that it’s easy for people to reduce their salt intake. Although you may think your food is not salty enough at first, your taste buds(味蕾) will gradually get used to it and you will feel that your food tastes the same as it did before.

3 . Do you have a headache? Take an aspirin or eat bird brains. Do you want beautiful skin? Use skin cream or eat pearls. Is your hair turning gray? Color your hair or eat black rice.
“Eat bird brains, pearls, and black rice?” some people ask. “How strange!” But for many Chinese people, bird brains, pearls, and black rice are not strange things to eat. Instead, they are good medicines.
Food that people use for medicines is called medical(药用的) food. The Chinese have eaten medicinal food and spices(香辛料) for centuries. Ginger, for example, is a common spice in Chinese cooking. Ginger gives food a nice flavor. The Chinese began to use ginger many years ago. They used ginger not because it tasted good. They used ginger because it was medicinal. Ginger, they thought, was good for the digestion. It also helped people who had colds. Pepper and garlic, too, were probably medicines a long time ago.
Some people don’t believe that food and spices are good medicines. They want to buy their medicine in drugstores, not in supermarkets. Other people want to try medicinal food. They say, “Maybe medicinal food can’t help me. But it can’t hurt me, either.”

4 . People drink alcohol(酒) in many parts of the world. Some medical scientists say light drinking may even be good for your health, especially for the heart. But they say such health benefits(好处) should be compared to the many health risks connected with alcohol use.

Some research suggests that having one to two drinks of alcohol a day may be good for your health. Several large studies have shown that this type of drinking may lower the risk of heart disease and other diseases.

A study last year suggested that drinking a little red wine may help lower the risk of breast cancer(乳腺癌) in women. Researchers at Medical Center in California studied 36 women. Each woman drank a glass of red or white wine every day for almost a month. Researchers collected blood samples(样本) from the women two times a month to test their hormone(激素) levels. The next month these women were told to exchange their wine. The researchers found that the women who drank red wine had lower levels of the female hormone than the white wine drinkers. They said red grapes have chemicals that may help to lower the risk of breast cancer.

However, recent studies suggested that even a little alcohol may generally increase the risk of breast cancer in women. They found that women who drink four small glasses of wine a week increase their risk of breast cancer by 15 percent.

Many studies have examined the harmful effects of alcohol use on the body. Alicia Ann Kowalchuk serves as medical director, saying “Healthy use for adults --- that's men under age 65 --- is no more than 4 drinks in a day and no more than 14 drinks in a week. And for women of all ages, it's no more than 7 drinks in a week and no more than 2 drinks in a day.” She says too much alcohol use has something to do with liver (肝脏) diseases, and many other cancers.

A.By following an example.B.By listing facts.
C.By collecting information worldwide.D.By comparing tested objects.
2. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

7 . On Thursday October 3, Adam Harper decided to stop drinking coffee. Adam is a MBA student at Harvard University. He studies long hours, gets very little sleep, so he drinks a lot of coffee—anywhere from five to six cups a day. Recently, Adam felt that drinking thus much coffee was making it hard for him to sleep at all. He also began having problems with his concentration(注意力), and complained of stomachaches. Adam’s doctor made this suggestions: stop drinking coffee altogether.
When Adam got up on October 3, he began his day without his morning coffee. By 11:00 a.m., Adam was in a terrible mood. He was tired and had a headache. At 11:30, he had a meeting with his student advisor. In the meeting, he found it almost impossible to continue. What was going on?
Caffeine, a chemical found in coffee, was most likely the reason for how Adam felt. Caffeine is a stimulant that boosts(增加) energy levels and improves concentration- but only for a short time. Lowering caffeine consumption(减少摄取咖啡因) often makes a drop in blood pressure and the result is a “coffee headache”. People who stop drinking coffee often say they feel tired and moody, and find it hard to focus.
The good news is that these feeling usually pass after four and five days. During this time, doctors suggested taking some aspirin for the headache. So, if Adam can wait, in less than a week, he may be feeling much better.

According to a new report, Americans drink more soda (苏打) than ever before. Do your parents ever try to limit how much soda you drink? Do they say drinking too much isn’t good for you?

Right now, in New York, Mayor (市长) Michael Bloomberg also limits how much soda you can have — and it is not only for you but also for adults! Starting in March, 2013, places like movie theaters, restaurants and sports centers, can’t sell sodas larger than 473 ml. Sellers who break the ban (禁令) will face a $200 fine. Why is drinking too much soda unhealthy for you? A study shows that for every soda a child drinks every day, their obesity (肥胖) risk appears to jump 60%. Obesity kills thousands of New Yorkers every year and the city spends as much as $4 billion a year on medical care for overweight and obese people.

New York has a population of about 8 million. Of course, it’s impossible for all New Yorkers to agree on the ban. There are different opinions. Keith Aiken believes the ban can help fight teen’s obesity. “Clearly, soda causes teens obesity. We have to do something.” he says. Chuck Kallenbach doesn’t think the ban can work.
