文章大意:本文主要讲述了长期喝热的饮料能导致食道癌。
2 .

There are many reasons to enjoy drinking tea. However, you should let the hot tea cool down a little before you drink it. Why? A new study reported in the International Journal of Cancer gives the answer.

“Many people enjoy drinking tea, coffee or other hot drinks. However, according to our report, drinking very hot tea can increase the risk of esophageal cancer (食道癌), so you’d better wait until hot drinks cool down before drinking,” the lead writer of the study, Dr. Farhad Islami of the American Cancer Society, said.

For the study, Islami and his team followed more than 50, 000 people aged between 40 and 75 years old. They found 317 of those people had esophageal cancer. The National Cancer Institute reported that about 17, 290 Americans had esophageal cancer in a year, and that only about 19 percent of sick people survived. However, five years later, they died.

The scientists found that drinking 700 ml drinks (about three cups) every day or more at a higher temperature (60°C or hotter) would have a 90 percent higher risk of esophageal cancer, compared with people drinking the same cups at temperature below 60℃.

This is not the first report showing a person drinking very hot drinks has the risk of cancer. In 2022, the World Health Organization showed a report. It found that drinking very hot drinks of any kind could increase the risk of cancer.

3 . Understanding how much sugar and saturated fat (饱和脂肪) is in your drink can be confusing. Many of us end up having too much without realizing it. Saturated fat is often added into drinks to improve their “mouth-feel”. But having too much of both sugar and saturated fat can increase your risk of diabetes (糖尿病). Too much sugar can also lead to obesity (肥胖).

Nutri-Grade “grades” your drinks based on their sugar and saturated fat levels. Think of this as a score. Drinks graded “A” have the lowest sugar and saturated fat content, while drinks graded “D” have the highest.

Starting from the end of 2023, all drinks sold in Singapore must put a Nutri-Grade label (标签) on the drinks, according to sugar and saturated fat levels.

To manage your sugar and saturated fat intake, drink less Nutri-Grade C and D drinks and go for healthier choice or Nutri-Grade A or B drinks or simply choose water.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了无糖产品对健康的影响。
4 .

①Sugar-free cookies, reduced-sugar cereal, sugar-free candy, diet soda. Do these seem like healthier alternatives (替代物)? After sugar became something forbidden in the nutrition and fitness world, sugar-free products acted as alternatives for once beloved sweet drinks and snacks. Claiming to be ZERO sugar, they were believed as healthier choices, especially for those people who manage diabetics (糖尿病), or aim to slim down. But the truth is they aren’t equal to better.

②When a product is labeled sugar-free, it means artificial sweeteners are used instead of real sugar. Artificial sweeteners don’t come from natural sources but they are chemical substances that are added to food and drinks to make them sweeter. Actually, most artificial sweeteners are a lot sweeter than sugar, even 200—600 times sweeter, so only a tiny amount is needed.

③Let’s find out how artificial sweeteners work. They work similarly to regular sugar by exciting your taste buds. The taste buds send signals to the brain that they have tasted something sweet and you feel a similar sense as you would with sugar.

④In recent studies, scientists have revealed artificial sweeteners are more harmful to our body than real sugar. Many businesses market sugar-free alternatives as “low-calorie” or “no-calorie”. It misleads people to believe sugar-free products can make them slim and healthy. But it’s reported that you get no nutritional value from consuming them.

⑤What’s worse, when you eat this kind of sweet food, your body continues to desire it even though your body can’t metabolize (新陈代谢) these sugar-free alternatives. Your brain does not know the difference, either. In turn, sugar-free alternatives connect to weight gain and Type 2 diabetes.

⑥Similarly, artificial sweeteners also damage your gut’s ability to break down sugar which affects everything you eat. In other words, your body doesn’t know how to deal with artificial sweeteners because they have nothing real to process.

⑦Here’s a golden rule: stay away from artificial sweeteners and look for non-sugar, natural sweeteners like Stevia or date sugar. In the war against artificial sweeteners and real sugar, both lose. Satisfy your sweet tooth with natural sugars that come from fruits and stay away from products claiming to be sugar-free or diet!

1. What’s special about sugar-free products?
A.They don’t taste delicious.B.They are good for health.
C.They can make people excited.D.They contain artificial sweeteners.
2. The underlined word “consuming” in Paragraph 4 might mean ________.
A.usingB.storingC.breakingD.controlling
3. Which of the following is the author’s opinion on sweet products?
A.People should fight against sugary products and stay away from them all the time.
B.People who like sweet food can choose fruit sugars to improve their ability to metabolize.
C.It’s wise for people to refuse artificial sweeteners because they result in some health risks.
D.There is still a need for more scientific studies on sugary products whether they are safe or not.
4. What is the structure of the passage?
A.B.
C.D.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要讲述了一旦你开始吃薯条,你就可能一直吃,直到吃完。这是为什么呢,科学家说这是由于一种神经元。本文介绍了关于盐分的科学研究。

10 . Once you begin to eat potato chips, you may keep eating until the bag is empty. Have you ever experienced this? Why can’t you stop eating these salty chips? Scientists said it is due to a kind of neuron (神经元).

Scientists at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston have found that some neurons can make us want to eat salt.

The neurons take note of whether our bodies are lacking sodium (钠), a main part of salt. Then, they send signals (信号) to our brain to encourage us to eat more salt, according to the Daily Mail.

How do these neurons work?

Scientists did experiments on mice. They found that when mice lack sodium, their body gives off a kind of hormone (荷尔蒙) called aldosterone (醛固酮). This hormone then makes these neurons become active.

More research showed that adding salt to meals makes people enjoy their food more, Time magazine reported. This may cause people to continue eating even if they are full.

Scientists from Deakin University in Australia asked healthy people to eat the same food for lunch for four weeks. The amount of salt in the food was changed each week. At the same time, the scientists measured how much these people ate. They also asked the people how they felt about the meals; for example, if they felt happy or were still hungry after eating.

The results showed that salt made people eat 11 percent more food and calories. When eating low-salt meals, they could control (控制) over how much they ate. “But when we add salt to that food, all of a sudden those controls are gone,” researcher Russell Keast said to Time.
