①Sugar-free cookies, reduced-sugar cereal, sugar-free candy, diet soda. Do these seem like healthier alternatives (替代物)? After sugar became something forbidden in the nutrition and fitness world, sugar-free products acted as alternatives for once beloved sweet drinks and snacks. Claiming to be ZERO sugar, they were believed as healthier choices, especially for those people who manage diabetics (糖尿病), or aim to slim down. But the truth is they aren’t equal to better.
②When a product is labeled sugar-free, it means artificial sweeteners are used instead of real sugar. Artificial sweeteners don’t come from natural sources but they are chemical substances that are added to food and drinks to make them sweeter. Actually, most artificial sweeteners are a lot sweeter than sugar, even 200—600 times sweeter, so only a tiny amount is needed.
③Let’s find out how artificial sweeteners work. They work similarly to regular sugar by exciting your taste buds. The taste buds send signals to the brain that they have tasted something sweet and you feel a similar sense as you would with sugar.
④In recent studies, scientists have revealed artificial sweeteners are more harmful to our body than real sugar. Many businesses market sugar-free alternatives as “low-calorie” or “no-calorie”. It misleads people to believe sugar-free products can make them slim and healthy. But it’s reported that you get no nutritional value from consuming them.
⑤What’s worse, when you eat this kind of sweet food, your body continues to desire it even though your body can’t metabolize (新陈代谢) these sugar-free alternatives. Your brain does not know the difference, either. In turn, sugar-free alternatives connect to weight gain and Type 2 diabetes.
⑥Similarly, artificial sweeteners also damage your gut’s ability to break down sugar which affects everything you eat. In other words, your body doesn’t know how to deal with artificial sweeteners because they have nothing real to process.
⑦Here’s a golden rule: stay away from artificial sweeteners and look for non-sugar, natural sweeteners like Stevia or date sugar. In the war against artificial sweeteners and real sugar, both lose. Satisfy your sweet tooth with natural sugars that come from fruits and stay away from products claiming to be sugar-free or diet!

And then they posted videos on the Internet showing Peppa gobbling (大口吞吃) all that food for money. Media reports say in one video the girl is clearly seen saying she cannot eat any more, but her parents force her to eat more to create a “big stomach queen” to draw eyeballs and make more money from people watching it. In some of the videos, the girl is seen walking with difficulty, her legs being unable to support her weight.
As the video spread quickly online, users got angry at what Peppa’s parents had done and caused the video platform (平台) to delete Peppa’s videos and no more allow her parents to land on it.
__▲__. Even if Peppa’s parents now stop forcing food down her throat, it will still take a very long time before her weight drops to a healthy level. Besides, being overweight places her under risks of diabetes (糖尿病) and high blood pressure, which can become life-long illnesses.
Peppa’s parents, who made money at the possible cost of Peppa’s pains for life, should be made accountable and pay for their wrongdoings. On the other hand, online video platforms, which encourage such risky videos to make money, should also accept due punishment.

The program will get families, schools, newspapers, magazines and TVs to join together and deal with the students’ obesity so that students will be at a healthier weight. The program includes: Food stores should sell healthier foods. Schools should serve healthier meals with less fat and should also offer gym classes.
The lady is trying to fight the students’ obesity all over the country because it can cause illnesses and higher health cost. She wants the students to eat right, exercise more and control (控制) their weight. She also wants the students to understand it is important to have less sweet food, and drink water, milk and fresh juice, but not to choose cokes. At the same time she has also set a good example by planting a vegetable garden. She hopes that the garden will encourage more people to plant one too.

“As people move and wildlife move in response to a changing environment, humans and wildlife and animals will come in contact more regularly,” said Jeanne Fair from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. Fair argues that by shifting animal habitats, climate change will also make the opportunities for disease spillover more frequent (频繁的). “Everything is sort of shifting and will shift into the future as the environment changes through climate change,” Fair said.
Scientists, including climatologists and epidemiologists on Fair’s team at Las Alamoe, are beginning to model how changes to the climate will impact the spread of infectious diseases. It’s early days for this kind of research, but previous studies suggest that extreme weather has already played a role in at least one outbreak. Scientists say drought and deforestation have combined to force bats out of rainforests and into orchards (果园) in Malaysia to find food. Those bats, a common disease reservoir, then passed the Nipah virus through pigs to humans for the first time in the late 1990s.
“We’re going by the past data to really predict what’s going to happen in the future,” Fair said. “And so, anytime you increase that wildlife-human interface, that’s sort of an emerging disease hot spot. And so, that’s just increasing as we go forward.”
Jeffrey Shaman, head of the climate and health program at Columbia University’s public health school, argues we don’t yet know whether climate change will cause a net increase in infectious disease rates globally. For example, mosquitoes carry disease that affects (影响) millions of people across the world every year. As their habitats expand in some parts of the world, they might contract diseases elsewhere. Shaman says what we know for certain about climate change is that it will make it harder to predict where disease outbreaks will pop up.

“Eat bird brains, pearls, and black rice?” some people ask.“How strange!” But for many Chinese people, bird brains, pearls, and black rice are not strange things to eat.Instead, they are good medicines.
Food that people use for medicines is called medical(药用的) food. The Chinese have eaten medicinal food and spices(香辛料) for centuries.Ginger, for example, is a common spice in Chinese cooking.Ginger gives food a nice flavor. The Chinese began to use ginger many years ago. They used ginger not because it tasted good. They used ginger because it was medicinal.Ginger, they thought, was good for the digestion. It also helped people who had colds.Pepper and garlic, too, were probably medicines a long time ago.
Some people don’t believe that food and spices are good medicines. They want to buy their medicine in drugstores, not in supermarkets.Other people want to try medicinal food. They say, “Maybe medicinal food can’t help me.But it can’t hurt me, either.”
People can try medicinal food at a Chinese restaurant in San Francisco, California. The restaurant serves medicinal food. The menus at the restaurant have a list of dinners.Next to each dinner there is information about the food. The information helps people order “Queen’s Secret,” for example, is one dinner at the restaurant. This dinner has meat from chickens with black feathers. It is for women who want to look young.

【推荐3】How nice are you? Do you give money to homeless people? Do you offer your seat to someone in need on a bus?
Many people believe that confident people think more highly of themselves, while those who have low self-esteem(自尊)think less of their qualities. However, a new study says it might not be true, the Guardian reported.
The study was done by Jonathan Freeman, a psychologist professor from the University of London, UK. He found that 98 percent of British people consider themselves to be among the nicest 50 percent of the population.
In the study, Freeman first asked some people to rate(估价)their own niceness. Then he got people to answer questions like “Do you give directions to strangers?” and “Have you donated blood?” The results showed that people are not as nice as they think they are. Two thirds of them seldom helped others carry shopping bags, and only a quarter of them donated blood.
In another study by psychologists from universities from Chicago and Virginia, the US, some people were shown pictures of themselves. Some pictures had been slightly(轻微地) changed to make them appear more attractive. When asked to pick the unchanged pictures people usually chose the more attractive ones.
So why do we think we are nicer than we actually are? There are many theories(理论). A popular one says we unconsciously deceive(无意识地欺骗)ourselves, so that we can get confidence without knowingly lying to ourselves or each other.
How can we solve it? Other studies show that there is a simple way: feedback(反馈). Compare others’ opinion toward you with your own and you will see a clearer picture.

【推荐1】What will the world of the future be like? There are plenty of people who are happy to give their opinion of what we will be doing in 2050.Here are two predictions about the world of tomorrow.
When we dream about the future, many like to think of owning a personal flying car.The advantages are obvious. This technology would allow total freedom of movement. We could fly at 480km per hour, avoiding traffic lights and busy roads. However, some people believe there will be problems with traffic control. If the cars become popular, there is likely to be an air traffic jam.Another big problem is mechanical failure( 机械故障 ).What will happen if the cars stop working? These are problems we must expect if flying cars become a reality.
Three-dimensional(3D) printing is another new technology with exciting possibilities.3D printers are used to build an object with liquid plastic. They build the object layer by layer until it is complete.Car companies already use 3D printers to make life-size models of car parts, and medical companies use the technology to make man-made body parts. As we move into the future, 3D printing will revolutionize( 彻底改变 ) the way we shop, the way we manufacture products and the way we treat sick people. The disadvantage is that such equipment will be extremely expensive.
So, in the future, we might be able to fly to work or print out new shoes.Although there are some problems to solve before this will be possible, we can certainly dream of a world where technology makes life easier and safer for millions of people.

① It is easy to believe that the daily life of a plant is simple and boring. They seem to just stand there and sunbathe. In fact, plants are always busy doing many things. Measuring (估量) light is one of them. This activity helps plants to plan better for the future.
② To start with, we should know how plants feel the light. In fact, there are some special proteins (蛋白质) in their cells (细胞). Once receiving light, they will call on other cells to produce, resulting in the growth towards the light.
③ Then what can plants get from measuring the changes in the amount of daylight? This helps them to tell what time of the year it is. If a plant is beginning to get more daylight, it knows it’s spring. Because of this, it may then start producing flowers.
④ If the amount of daylight starts to get low, the plant knows that autumn is coming. It may start to store “food” for its growth. For example, the potato plant will make tubers(块茎)—the potatoes that we eat.
⑤ Plants record not only the amount of daylight they receive, but also the quality of light. Some forms of light can help plants grow better. Direct sunlight, for example, works better than light that is being separated through the leaves of other plants. A plant can’t get the right form of light when it is prevented from getting light by other plants. It may then begin to grow taller or produce larger leaves in order to get more sunlight.

The “big four” fashion weeks—London, Milan, Paris and New York Fashion Week—are witnessing (见证) many Chinese designers to show their fashion brands (品牌). “Made in China” is more and more popular now—and it’s a fashinable one.
The story of Chinese fashion began in 2011 when Feiyue and Huili, Chinese sports shoes brands, made the world look. Chinese sports brand Li Ning also had a new design at New York Fashion Week in February 2019—it is the second time the brand shows its design at the NYFW. Chen Lijie, the brand’s designer, says his design comes from old Chinese truth (真理) that man is part of nature.
“Chinese brands don’t use ‘cheap’ as a selling point any more. They are impressive and can go head to head with foreign brands (外国品牌).” says Shaun Rein, director of China Market Research Group. Rome is not built in a day. Chinese designers spend much time trying to design the best and most fashionable clothes.
These Chinese brands become so popular perhaps because of the easy online shopping and the fact that China is growing stronger than before. Also, more and more people begin to like Chinese culture.
“We want to replace (代替) the words ‘made in China’ with ‘designed in China’, but there is a long way to go.” said Chinese designer Aric Chen. We’re happy to show Chinese fashion ideas to the whole world.
