3 . Everywhere you look you’ll find surveys and questionnaires (问卷) in magazines, newspaper articles, best-selling books, TV shows... all giving one clear message: women and men are different.
Clearly, we can’t get along because we communicate too differently. We don’t understand each other. Women think one thing, but men think another. A woman is willing to work together, but a man is competitive. Women are good communicators, and can relate to people well, while men are more driven by results. A woman can do several things at once, but a man prefers to do one task at a time. If you believe everything you read, women even have a stronger sense of smell and of touch. The list of differences goes on and on.
However, Dr. Janet S. Hyde claims (声称) that the differences between men and women are overstated. She reviewed 46 studies of gender (性别) differences, going back 20 years, and found that there are far more similarities than differences between men and women. In fact, Dr. Hyde’s results show that there are very few differences in the way we think, act and communicate. What’s more, she warns that claims of gender differences actually have a negative effect on women, both in the workplace and in their relationships with their husbands or boyfriends.
Girls also suffer the results of these claims. For example, girls studying in school are not always encouraged to think that they can succeed in math the same way that many boys are. This is because people often believe media claims that girls aren’t as good at math as boys. Perhaps it’s time to celebrate what brings us together, rather than focus on what divides us.

6 . Scientists have used clever methods to discover a hidden hallway inside the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. The 9-meter-long hallway could lead to new discoveries about the pyramid.
The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest of three pyramids near Giza, Egypt. It was built about 4,500 years ago by a king named Khufu. The pyramid was built as a place for Khufu to be buried (安葬).
The pyramid was sealed (密封的) until AD 820, when someone broke it open on one side. This person found three rooms, one on top of the other, inside the pyramid. The largest room was the King’s Chamber. Below that was the Queen’s Chamber. There was another room underground.
The pyramid has a long, angled hallway, called the Grand Gallery. The Grand Gallery leads to the King’s Chamber. There are also other hallways that go up and down, and a tunnel that now serves as an entrance for tourists.
But most of the pyramid has been sealed since it was built. The pyramid is believed to hold many other secrets. But scientists don’t want to damage the pyramid by opening it up to learn those secrets.
Instead, since 2015, a group of scientists from around the world have been using invisible rays (不可见射线) to scan the inside of the pyramid. They call their group “ScanPyramids”.
Now the ScanPyramids group has shown that there is also a hidden hallway not far from the tourist’s entrance to the pyramid.*
It’s still not clear what the hallway and the large empty space were for. The scientists believe they may have been used to help spread out the weight of the pyramid.
The scientists plan to continue scanning the pyramid—and others, too—in the hopes of learning more.

7 . As the weather changes from day to day, sometimes it’s impossible to avoid having a cold. There are some natural remedies (疗法) that can help you feel better when you have the common cold.
If you have a cold, you should drink something warm. Add honey and lemon to hot water or tea. You will keep warm while you’re drinking tea. A cup of ginger tea helps the blood to move more quickly and make you sweat through your body.
Garlic is a super food. Garlic helps to fight off germs (细菌) when you eat it daily. It can reduce the number of colds you get each year and shorten the time you have a cold. If you don’t mind eating uncooked garlic, it’s best to eat a few pieces every three to four hours when you feel the first signs of a cold.
Many people know that salt can kill germs. For a sore throat, mix about half a teaspoon of salt into warm water and use as a mouthwash. As a mixture of salt and water pours into the nose, the germs are cleared away.
It is common to have a cold, and Mother Nature’s remedies will be there for you to lower your pain (痛苦) when you need to fight against that cold!

8 . People have understood that kindness is good for the person who receives help. However, scientists have recently begun to study the effect of the kindness on the person giving it. What they have found is that doing good is good for the doer (行为者). Acts of kindness can improve health, help a person reach goals and even add years to a person’s life.
The first study to show the connection between doing good and living along life was a study on aging (衰老). Beginning in 1956, scientists studied a group of married mothers for 30 years. They found that what did matter was whether they volunteered. Women that volunteered had fewer diseases during their life.
Many other studies have found the same positive (积极的) effects. Helping other people improves long-term health. Those who volunteered had fewer serious diseases than those who did not volunteer. This included diseases such as heart attack, cancer and stroke.
Scientists are researching many possible causes. One possible cause is an increase in antibodies (抗体), which help fight against disease. One study showed the body produces more antibodies after an act of kindness. This increase in antibodies (抗体) can last nearly an hour after one act of kindness is finished.
Another one is an increase in a chemical that fights the effects of stress from life. Scientists have found a link between being kind to people and an increase in the chemical oxytocin (催生素). Oxytocin is a chemical produced in the brain. It reduces many of the harmful chemicals the body produces under stress.
1. What did the study in Paragraph 2 show?A.Diseases age people fast. | B.Doing good is good for one’s health. |

10 . Twenty years ago, the idea of sharing our lives so openly with the world was unheard of. However, for young people today it is considered completely normal to share pictures of their lives and interact online every day. Fans of social media point out that the world has never been so connected as it has allowed people to make friends, learn about the world and celebrate life.
However, many people have worried about the effects of this new way of living, particularly around the amount and type of information that is shared so openly. A recent research has found that too much time on social media may have some negative effects. The researchers measured people’s attitudes and feelings before and after watching social media sites. They found that the more time people spent on social media, the more unhappy they became.
There are a number of reasons for this. When watching social media, people often see photographs and stories showing beautiful holidays, fun parties and fashionable clothes. People seldom post negative stories or bad pictures, so it can be misleading. For those looking at these pictures and comparing them to their own lives, they can end up feeling depressed. They might think their lives are worse in comparison. Even for those people who post positive stories and pictures, they too can feel stressed and worried. The number of “likes” and comments on their posts can make them anxious about their popularity. Of course, there is also the problem of “cyber bullying” (网络欺凌) where people become victims of bullying online when others make negative or cruel comments about them.
The reality is that social media is a part of modern life and it is not going to go away. This research shows us that it is important to find a balance between our online and offline lives. We don’t have to disconnect from the Internet to live a happy life, but we should realize that the pictures we see and stories we read are only part of a bigger picture. If we can do that, we can protect ourselves and enjoy our lives.
1. What effect does social media have according to the recent research?A.It enables people to make more friends on the Internet. |
B.It increases unhappiness for people using it too much. |
C.It makes people have much more wonderful lives. |
D.It helps people to have a better knowledge of the world. |
A.They fear others mislead their posts. |
B.They think others have happier lives. |
C.They fear they may be cyber bullied by others. |
D.They fear others have no interest in the stories. |
A.By giving causes. | B.By listing numbers. |
C.By making comparison. | D.By describing process. |
A.The pictures we see are only part of the picture. |
B.None of the stories we read on the Internet are true. |
C.In order to live a happy life, we should share more pictures online. |
D.What we see or read on the Internet only shows part of the reality. |
