Look at the picture. Do you know what the girl and the boy are doing? They are throwing two baby puffins (海鹰) off a cliff (悬崖). Every year in late summer, people on Iceland’s Westman Islands throw thousands of baby puffins off cliffs. This yearly tradition is called “puffling season”. In fact, they just want to save these birds’ lives.
Puffins are the most common birds on the Westman Islands in Iceland. Different from most sea birds, they are able to go under water to 60 meters deep to catch fish. Puffins are born on sea cliffs. When baby puffins become large enough, they fly away and spend several years at sea. Then they return to produce their babies. In the past, the birds found the sea by following the light of the moon. But now, city lights make them lose their way.
Kyana Sue Powers is an American photographer. She found out about the puffling season while visiting the Westman Islands last summer. One day when she was leaving a restaurant after dinner, she noticed a group of children acting strangely. They were running after puffins. Later, she learned that every year many baby puffins fly into the town after mistaking city lights for the moon. People there spend a few weeks in August and September collecting lost baby puffins, usually four to ten in a night. Then they throw them off cliffs and set them on the right way. That is significant for the puffins.
Powers says she feels excited when seeing people throw young puffins. “When you take a baby puffin to the cliff, it’s the first time in its life that it has seen the sea, and it is going to live there for the next few years,” she says. “I really hope it will have a great life!”

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Nowadays, typing or texting is taking the place of the strokes (笔画) of Chinese characters (汉字). For the reason, people are paying less attention to handwriting. As a result, they can’t even remember exactly how to write a given character sometimes. This is called “character amnesia (提笔忘字)”.
To change the situation, the TV program named Chinese Character Dictation (听写) Competition came out. Meng Man, who teaches at Minzu University of China, took part in the competition as a judge (评委). “I was surprised by some competitors because I couldn’t even remember how to write certain characters. But they could,” she said. “Now many adults have trouble writing Chinese characters. This program is really great, since it draws people’s attention to this problem.”
When typing or texting, most people use a system where they type out the pinyin of a character and then get a list of all possible Chinese characters. They just need to choose the one they want from the list. The bad thing about the system is that it stops people from thinking about how a Chinese character is formed.
“Chinese characters are generally square. They teach people to be upright (正直的). Typing or texting will influence people’s understanding of the traditional culture behind the Chinese characters,” Meng said.
To solve the problem of “character amnesia”, experts suggest that people change their mobile phone texting way from pinyin to handwriting. In this way, they can avoid forgetting how to write characters.

3. What is the disadvantage of the pinyin typing system?

How to Improve Your Reading
Learning how to read well in English might not be an easy task.
Choose right reading materials (材料).
There are so many choices! There are textbooks and graded readers, but there are also a lot more books you can read.
Be intentional (意图明确的).
Being intentional means doing something on purpose with a reason in mind. With reading, you need to be intentional by setting a reading aim. Decide on a certain number of pages you want to read each day.
Reading can both introduce you to new vocabulary (词汇) and teach you how to use them. Many words in English are often used together in a consistent (相互连贯的) way. Reading groups of words, or words that go together, will help you better understand how to use your new vocabulary.
A.Read word groups. |

C.Don’t choose a book that is too easy or too difficult. |
D.You could also be intentional with planning a time to read. |

7 . Trends (潮流) always come and go. Many goods (商品) people buy to keep up with fashion (时尚) often end up in the rubbish bin. Now many young Chinese people are giving these things a second life. They are called “stoopers”, and they pick up idle (闲置的) things and reuse them. They are mainly in big cities such as Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou.
Chen Jiaorong is one of them. She started stooping in June 2022 when she found many people were throwing away the things that they hardly ever used after they got free from the COVID lockdown in Shanghai. After that, Chen often “found treasures” in her spare time. Now her house is filled with things that have been redesigned (重新设计) from the idle goods she has collected, including tables, chairs and clothes.
“Some people say stooping means collecting rubbish,” Chen said. “But for me, it is about making the best use of things.” That’s why she wants to introduce the trend to others. Sometimes Chen also puts stickers on idle goods that she doesn’t need and posts pictures of them online for others to find.
Huang Xiaohe from Kunming No.1 High School loves stooping too. She’s had a hobby of keeping things since her childhood. Though the 13-year-old girl has few chances to go stooping in her city, Huang often looks for idle goods around her school. She then cleans and redesigns them, turning them into fun things at home.
“I believe that any waste can be turned into treasures,” said Huang. She also added that stooping was an action to fight over-buying.

On May 30, Chinese speed climber (速度攀岩者) Cao Long made history. In Zhejiang, he finished his climbing at 4.98 seconds and people call him “Chinese Spider-Man”.
“The race finishes in seconds. So a climber should be careful and keep calm. Otherwise (否则), he will make mistakes and lose the race,” Cao said.
In fact, that pressure (压力) is part of the reason why Cao loves the sport. “Competing side by side with another climber really excites me,” he said.
Cao took up climbing at the age of 8 and he won the national climbing competition two years later. When he was 14, a terrible accident happened to him. He fell from a 13-meter wall, breaking his lower back. Though it was hard, Cao’s love for the sport made him go back to climbing.
