She is a great Chinese woman. She has spent almost all her life in Dunhuang, studying and protecting the 1,600-year-old Mogao Grottoes (莫高窟). People call her “the Daughter of Dunhuang”. Her name is Fan Jinshi.

Born in 1938, Fan grew up in Shanghai. After graduating from the Department of History, Peking University in 1963, she came to Dunhuang and worked at Dunhuang Academy (研究院). She became head of the Academy in 1998.

When Fan first came to Dunhuang, it was a poor village and life there was really hard. Although she missed her life in Shanghai, she stayed. She and some workers put doors on the caves, planted trees and controlled the number of visitors. “The longer I’ve stayed here, the deeper my love has grown for Dunhuang, “ Fan said.

Fan started many projects to protect the Mogao Grottoes. One of them is “Digital (数字的) Dunhuang”. It gives people a new way to see the caves without destroying them. Under Fan’s leadership, Dunhuang Academy has grown into the world’s largest organization for Dunhuang studies.

From a 25-year-old girl to a white-haired lady, Fan has spent over 55 years in Dunhuang. Her great work was widely noticed. She was honored as one of CCTV’s “People Who Moved China 2019”. Now 86-year-old Fun Jinshi lives a peaceful life.

Fan wrote a book named Dunhuang Is Where My Heart Belongs: Fan Jinshi’s Self-Narration. It came out in 2019. In the book, she talks about her personal experiences and her relationship with the Mogao Grottoes. If you want to learn more about her, you should read it.

2 . Where was that cashier (收银员)? I quickly looked at my watch. I hardly had enough time to eat a sandwich and rush back to work.

I looked around the nearly empty restaurant, but the cashier was nowhere in sight. A woman stood wiping (擦拭) the far end of the counter (柜台). She looked at me coldly with sad, dark eyes.

I waited, getting angry. I’d been standing there for at least three minutes!

Controlling my anger, I remembered Mom’s words. “Whenever you find yourself in an unpleasant situation, just think about what is missing. If someone is unkind, then kindness is missing. If someone is hateful, then love is missing. If we will be what’s missing, then we’ll provide whatever the situation needs.”

And here I was in an unpleasant situation. How should I “be what’s missing”? What was missing was service. Maybe I should just jump behind the counter and take my own order.

Just then the woman walked slowly toward me. “May I help you?” she asked, still coldly. She looked so tired. No doubt, she was overworked.

I took a deep breath. With Mom’s words ringing in my head, I gave the woman my order and smiled. “How are you today?”

My question seemed to surprise her. She eyed me for a second before answering. “Not too good.” “I’m sorry,” I said. “I hope it gets better starting right now.”

She almost smiled as she looked at me. “Thanks. I hope you’re right. I should also say sorry to you. I have worked a whole day without rest.”

I thought to myself as I ate my sandwich. We’re all the same, really. We have problems and angers. We get tired and we hurt. We need to be nicer to each other.

After eating, I wiped the table cleaner than usual, and put the tray (托盘) back nicely on the stand. The woman was watching me, with a big smile on her face.

“Be what’s missing.” It worked.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了柳絮和杨絮的形成原因以及科学家为减少杨絮产生而研究出来的方法。
3 .        The “April snow” is here! It’s not real snow, of course, it’s catkins (飞絮) from willows and poplar trees in spring. For some people, this “snow” is not welcomed. Catkins can cause allergies (过敏), making people’s noses, eyes, and skin uncomfortable. In spring, the female (雌性的) trees grow lots of flowers. When these flowers finish growing, they produce cotton-like seeds that spread through the air.

Luckily, scientists have found many ways to control catkins. Doing “gender change surgery (变性手术)” on willow and poplar trees is one of them. People cut off the branches of female trees and replace them with branches from male (雄性的) trees. This cuts down the number of catkins. However, this way is slow and expensive. A skilled worker can do the “surgery” on less than ten trees a day. From 2008 to 2018, only around 1, 000 trees were treated in Beijing.

Scientists also use special injections (注射剂) to reduce the number of catkins on trees. These injections make the trees mainly use their energy to grow bigger and get more leaves, not to make catkins. Xu Qinming, an expert, said that this method is safe for the trees. However, the trees need to get injections every year to keep the catkins numbers under control.

Other than injections, the trees can “take medicine”, too. This medicine can be sprayed onto the trees before the catkins form, which can quickly reduce catkins numbers. Still, people need to be careful about how much of the medicine they use and when they use it, or they might hurt the environment.

1. What can we know from paragraph one?
A.Catkins are hard to see.
B.It’s normal to snow in April.
C.People welcome willows.
D.It’s uncomfortable to breath in catkins.
2. How many ways are introduced to deal with catkins?
A.One.B.Two.C.Three.D.Four.
3. What is the disadvantage of using injections according to the passage?
A.Trees need to be injected every year.
B.It needs many skilled workers to do it.
C.It is slow and expensive.
D.It’s bad for the trees and environment.
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.How to deal with catkins allergies.
B.How to control catkins with new technology.
C.How to tell male and female willow trees apart.
D.How to protect willow and polar trees.

8 . 阅读短文,然后根据内容回答问题。

Microplastics are very small plastic pieces. They are less than 0.5 cm in diameter (直径). These tiny pieces are formed in two main ways. The first is that they are made on purpose. For example, tiny plastic pieces are often added to toothpaste (牙膏). In the other way, bigger pieces of plastics break up into smaller pieces and become microplastics.

Countless microplastics enter the sea. They can be eaten by sea animals of all sizes. When the animals’ stomachs are filled with plastics, they do not feel hungry and do not eat food. Some animals will even lose their lives. Some tiny plastic pieces have been traveling through the sea for a long time! They can act like little sponges (海绵) and take in harmful chemicals. Through the food chain, these chemicals can easily end up in human bodies. A recent study found that these chemicals can influence how hormones (激素) work in our bodies. This is bad for our health.

What can we do to cut down on microplastic pollution? Scientists are working on “green” materials to take the place of plastics. In our daily lives, we can cut down on the use of plastics. For example, we can bring our own shopping bags instead of using single-use plastic bags.

1. How many main ways are there to form microplastics?
