In July, 2021, China introduced the “double reduction” policy. It is expected to lower students’ learning pressure by reducing homework and after-school classes.

According to the policy, students in Grade One and Grade Two should have no written exams. Also, students in other grades at primary schools should only have one final exam for every term. Middle schools are allowed to organize one test in the middle of the term and one at the end.

Some schools have organized too many tests that are too difficult. As a result, students have to study hard all the time and they have been under a lot of stress. It can be harmful to students’ mental (心理的) and physical health and it must be changed.

According to the policy, schools and classes should not organize weekly or monthly tests. Also, schools should make sure the difficulty of the tests does not go above the national teaching plan. The exam should pay more attention to basic knowledge and skills, and the number of questions based on rote learning (死记硬背) should be reduced.

At the same time, schools should do something about the exam results properly. The exam results should be divided into four to five grades without giving the scores, and the results will no longer be announced (宣布) in public, instead schools should tell parents and students the results in a proper way. These proper ways will meet the policy requirements and lower students’ pressure about study.

Everybody has a favorite TV show. Some people like to watch cartoons, other people like to watch soap operas. Now reality TV shows are very popular in many countries. Reality TV shows have no actors. The stars are real people like you and me.

One of the most famous ones is Survivor (《幸存者》). In Survivor, sixteen people try to win one million dollars. For ten weeks they live together far away from home. Their life is very hard. They have to sleep outside and find their own food. There are many games and tests. If they fail a test, they might have to leave the show. “Survivor” is very popular. Is it good to watch a lot of TV? In Britain, most children watch more than three hours every day, and 66 percent of children have a TV in their bedroom. Some people think that watching too much TV is unhealthy for children because it stops them doing exercise. They say that children should read books or go outside and play. They also think that watching cartoons that show a lot of violence (暴力) is bad for young people.

But now some scientists say that watching TV can be good. They found that children who watch TV before an exam can get higher grades. This is because TV helps them to relax before the exam. It also exercises their brains, but remember: NOT TOO MUCH!

Have you ever heard of the Danish word “hygge”? Do you know its meaning? There is no English word for the exact meaning of “hygge”.

Enjoying beautiful music or having a movie night is hygge. Lighting candles or making tea in china cups—that is also hygge. There’s nothing more hygge than sitting around a table with your family or friends, discussing big and small things in life. Hygge means the idea of making daily activities special or meaningful, according to the BBC.

According to a recent study, mobile phones have an influence on students’ sleep and memory. The study is from a survey of 2, 298 students aged 6 to 18. It shows that nearly every student uses a mobile phone for half an hour to two hours every day, two to five times a week. Boys spend more time on mobile phones than girls, but girls are more interested in using their mobile phones before they sleep than boys.

According to the study, the more students use mobile phones before they sleep, the longer it takes them to fall asleep. So they will not sleep well, which leads to a poor memory.

In 2021, the Ministry of Education (教育部) stopped all primary and middle school students in China from bringing mobile phones to schools. If they want to bring mobile phones to schools, they need to hand in mobile phones to their teachers during school time.

Liu Xin, a father of a primary school student in Wuhan, Hubei Province, says his daughter is only allowed to play with her mobile phone for a short time over the weekend. “During school days, she has a smart watch if she needs to reach us, and I don’t think it’s necessary for primary school students to use mobile phones,” he says.

It is very easy for young students to become dependent (依赖) on mobile phones, so it’s necessary for parents to take actions to stop student from using the mobile phone more often together with school.
