A 17-year-old Chinese girl, from Inner Mongolia, has broken several school records in long-distance running lately. And she owes (归功于) her excellent performance to her father: He not only accompanies (陪伴) his daughter on her runs every morning, but he has also built a simple “gym” for her.

Last week, a colleague (同事) of mine told me she had just spent two hours explaining to her students how to use the word “as”. I asked her if she thought, after all of her great effort, her students would be able to use the word correctly in everyday conversations. Her answer, interestingly, was, “Probably not.”
I began to wonder whether it was worth it to spend so much time teaching grammar rules to students. Indeed, grammar is important. It controls how words are put together in order to form sentences. For years, many teachers have been tirelessly explaining grammar rules to their students before giving them plenty of exercises to do.
In recent years, however, more and more studies have found that, for most language learners, studying grammar rules is not that important. Some researchers even consider it to be a waste of time. This has left some young teachers to wonder: Should I teach grammar to my students?
In my opinion, students should be taught grammar. However, I think grammar shouldn’t be considered as a separate “skill” or “course”. For the past two years, I have created situations in which my students feel a need to use good grammar in order to communicate properly in English. I leave them to discover the grammar rules on their own. Meanwhile, I encourage them to use English as much as possible outside of the classroom. I believe that, to become good at English, the most important thing is to spend time practising speaking it.
I won’t ever spend two hours explaining a grammar rule. It will only make my students fall asleep rather than improve their English.

Like most students on international exchange programs, Shavia Westmoreland experienced culture shock (文化冲击) in Beijing, China.
Instead of hiding herself from the outside, Westmoreland overcame (克服) her culture shock by doing an activity she enjoys — volunteering.
“A friend brought me to an orphanage (孤儿院) to help me overcome culture shock,” she said, “He knew that I loved volunteering and language teaching, so he told me the orphanage would be a great place to ‘develop a feeling of home’ in a different culture and improve my language skills.”
Westmoreland enjoyed the visit so much that she started volunteering at the orphanage. She visited once a week to teach English. She also did several “non-purpose” visits on the weekends, just to spend time with the children.
Working with the children, staff and other volunteers taught her more about Chinese culture and gave her chances to practice Chinese. “I had a better understanding of Chinese culture by working with the staff and volunteers. At the end of all conversations, I found that there were more similarities between us than there were differences,” she said.
Volunteering also gave Westmoreland a sense of achievements and the courage (勇气) to hang out around Beijing on her own. “The experience developed my courage to hang out and learn more about Beijing on my own, giving me more chances to practice Chinese outside my class lessons,” Westmoreland said. “The feeling of independence is an achievement for an exchange student, and I believe my volunteering was helpful to my study in China and was also a huge help to my personal growth.”

On the afternoon of September 21, 2023, the Shenzhou-16 astronauts gave their first science lecture (讲课) from the Tiangong space station to students around the world.
During the 48-minute lecture, the astronauts JingHaipeng, Zhu Yangzhu and Gui Haichao first greeted students and showed their living and work areas. They also shared their experiences in space.
The astronauts then performed several experiments (实验) to show physical phenomena (现象) in the special environment inside the space station. In one experiment, Zhu and Gui usedthe ping-pong bat and water balls to show the influence of liquid surface tension (液体表面张力)under weightless conditions. In another experiment, the two lit a candle to show how it was burning. They invited students to do similar experiments on the ground to find the differences.
Five classrooms were set on the ground, including one at the gym of Beihang University in Beijing. More than 2,400 students and teachers from the university and other schools attended the ground class at the gym. “I felt very privileged (荣幸的) to watch the lecture, which showed our nation’s power in science and technology,” said Li Baixuan, a student from Beihang Experimental Primary School. “The astronauts showed us what science and technology can achieve. The Sydney Opera House is one of the most famous buildings in Australia. This summer holiday, I got the chance to visit it and found out what made this building so great.
As our guide told us, the Sydney Opera House was built with a kind of self-cleaning material. This kind of material is very rare (稀有的) even today.
