A 17-year-old Chinese girl, from Inner Mongolia, has broken several school records in long-distance running lately. And she owes (归功于) her excellent performance to her father: He not only accompanies (陪伴) his daughter on her runs every morning, but he has also built a simple “gym” for her.

Zheng Guohua, a student in high school starts her run on the street with her father at four o’clock every morning. Her father, Zheng Long, always rides a motorcycle to accompany her.

Besides running, the father has also worked out a stricter training plan for his daughter, and built a simple “gym” by himself. Zheng Long made good use of something old that he collected during his spare time to set up the gym. It took him half a month to build the gym so his daughter could exercise better.

Every time during the school sports meeting, he attends his daughter’s competitions, which gives her a feeling of pride. Zheng Guohua said, “My classmates envy (羡慕) me for having such a loving and caring father. They all want to have a father like mine.”

In Zheng Guohua’s eyes, her father is not only a serious coach with a loud voice during training, but also a good friend to accompany her along the way. Zheng Guohua said that there were times when she wanted to give up training, however, she encouraged herself with her father’s words: “Only by paying the price of Superman can we get the harvest (收获) of Superman.” In the end, she overcame the difficulties because she always thought people should make their efforts to realize their own dreams, although there were some difficulties in life.

Last week, a colleague (同事) of mine told me she had just spent two hours explaining to her students how to use the word “as”. I asked her if she thought, after all of her great effort, her students would be able to use the word correctly in everyday conversations. Her answer, interestingly, was, “Probably not.”

I began to wonder whether it was worth it to spend so much time teaching grammar rules to students. Indeed, grammar is important. It controls how words are put together in order to form sentences. For years, many teachers have been tirelessly explaining grammar rules to their students before giving them plenty of exercises to do.

In recent years, however, more and more studies have found that, for most language learners, studying grammar rules is not that important. Some researchers even consider it to be a waste of time. This has left some young teachers to wonder: Should I teach grammar to my students?

In my opinion, students should be taught grammar. However, I think grammar shouldn’t be considered as a separate “skill” or “course”. For the past two years, I have created situations in which my students feel a need to use good grammar in order to communicate properly in English. I leave them to discover the grammar rules on their own. Meanwhile, I encourage them to use English as much as possible outside of the classroom. I believe that, to become good at English, the most important thing is to spend time practising speaking it.

I won’t ever spend two hours explaining a grammar rule. It will only make my students fall asleep rather than improve their English.

1. How long did the writer’s colleague spend explaining how to use the word “as”?

2. Why does the writer think grammar is important?

3. What do some researchers think of grammar learning?

Like most students on international exchange programs, Shavia Westmoreland experienced culture shock (文化冲击) in Beijing, China.

Instead of hiding herself from the outside, Westmoreland overcame (克服) her culture shock by doing an activity she enjoys — volunteering.

“A friend brought me to an orphanage (孤儿院) to help me overcome culture shock,” she said, “He knew that I loved volunteering and language teaching, so he told me the orphanage would be a great place to ‘develop a feeling of home’ in a different culture and improve my language skills.”

Westmoreland enjoyed the visit so much that she started volunteering at the orphanage. She visited once a week to teach English. She also did several “non-purpose” visits on the weekends, just to spend time with the children.

Working with the children, staff and other volunteers taught her more about Chinese culture and gave her chances to practice Chinese. “I had a better understanding of Chinese culture by working with the staff and volunteers. At the end of all conversations, I found that there were more similarities between us than there were differences,” she said.

Volunteering also gave Westmoreland a sense of achievements and the courage (勇气) to hang out around Beijing on her own. “The experience developed my courage to hang out and learn more about Beijing on my own, giving me more chances to practice Chinese outside my class lessons,” Westmoreland said. “The feeling of independence is an achievement for an exchange student, and I believe my volunteering was helpful to my study in China and was also a huge help to my personal growth.”

Some parents may have trouble getting their kids away from phones and outside during the holidays. But for one Virginia family, this wasn’t a big deal. Josh and Cassie Sutton finished a full-length hike with their son, Harvey.

The family spent 209 days walking thousands of miles to finish the whole Appalachian Trail, which is simply called the AT. Harvey was just 4 years old when they started, and celebrated his 5th birthday during the long travel.

To build up Harvey’s body and mind, Josh and Cassie Sutton have been hiking with him since he was two. They prepared him for hiking the AT by starting out with lots of shorter walks and hikes.

The AT is a 2,180-mile hiking trip that runs through the forests of the Appalachian Mountains. The amount(数量) of up and down on the trip is about the same as climbing up and down Mount Qomolangma (the world’s highest mountain) 16 times. Only one out of every four hikers finishes the trip.

But that didn’t stop Harvey and his family. During his days on the trip, Harvey played games with his parents. This helped him walk more quickly and have fun. They also made friends with other hikers. Harvey enjoyed the hard work of hiking. “My favorite part was rock climbing. It was really hard but fun,” he said.

Hiking the Appalachian Trail taught Harvey and his parents how to work as a team and how to go through difficulties together. Because of the experience, they are closer than ever before. Harvey said, “I want to hike it again in the future.”

Two Grade 11 students from Harbour View High School, Canada, penned Keeping It Cool, a lifeful book to encourage young children to fight climate (气候) change.

Cowritten by Joanna Jackson and Olivia Jordan, the book uses age-appropriate analogies (类比), as well as with colorful paintings. To explain the concept (概念) of the atmosphere (大气层), for example, the young writers drew a bubble (泡泡) around Earth in the story.

They also call for actions, such as planting trees and making vegetable gardens—showing how plants absorb (吸收) CO2 from the “bubble” atmosphere just like a vacuum cleaner (真空吸尘器). The book also tells kids how they can avoid polluting the bubble by trying to walk or ride a bike instead of taking a car or bus.

“The whole second half of the book is just things kids can do without needing their parents’ help. We wanted it to be something that every kid could finish,” Jordan explained to CBC News.

The two students visited a local primary school where they read their stories to the pupils and promoted (促进) discussions about the text with every Grade 5 class. They tried to make it clear that, regardless of age, anybody can help make a difference to Earth’s climate.

The Sydney Opera House is one of the most famous buildings in Australia. This summer holiday, I got the chance to visit it and found out what made this building so great.

As our guide told us, the Sydney Opera House was built with a kind of self-cleaning material. This kind of material is very rare (稀有的) even today.

First, we visited the Drama Hall. We learned about the designer of the Sydney Opera House—Jorn Utzon. He was the winner of an international design competition. However, he designed the Opera House according to his own tastes, which caused several problems. The project was completed 10 years late. The cost of building was over budget (预算). Utzon didn’t get to see the house after it was built.

Then, we visited the Joan Sutherland Theater which is the second largest theater. The theater was refurbished (翻新) in 2017 with new high-tech equipment (设备). Finally, we arrived at the largest theater—the Concert Hall. It has hosted many kinds of performances, from classical to rock music. A few years ago, a sports event was even held there.

Before we finished the tour, the guide told us the rest of Utzon’s story. In 1966, Utzon had an argument with the government and refused to give in. He had to leave the country. It was a hard time in his life. But many years later, people understood him and saw the building as the most popular work.

From this tour, I learned that the Opera House is not only a famous building but a holder of history and culture.

Chips, cookies and ice cream... Many kinds of food we like are ultra-processed And you may want to eat them again and again, said a new study in the British Medical Journal.

What are ultra-processed foods (UPFs)? You can’t make them by yourself in your own house. They are usually made in factories. And they often have lots of materials you may never know. Such foods have more calories than natural foods.

The scientists studied 36 countries and found that UPF lovers may feel very bad if they stop eating the food. Why do people love UPFs? Such foods can bring dopamine (多巴胺) to people’s mind. This helps make them feel happier and want to eat more.

About 14 percent of adults and 12 percent of children are eating UPFs, said the study. They are not good for people’s health around the world. Scientists are now calling for more care about the UPFs.
