1 . Recently, my husband and three kids were playing in Mediterranean(地中海),swimming and floating in the pictureperfect sea.It was ridiculously beautiful in Majorca,Spain. The way the sun danced across the water and how the blue horizon was dotted with storybook sailboats were such beautiful scenes.

My husband and I always dreamed about taking our kids on a trip around the world. It was one of the things we talked at length about. When we imagined our life with the children, we hoped we would have.

Fourteen years later, we had three boys who were growing up faster by the day. It was time to make good on those plans. We renewed our passports, and then packed our bags. We showed our kids the world. It was about experiencing the dozens of flights and trains and taxis together. We showed them how wonderful, how diverse, and how fascinating the world is. We wanted them to learn all that we had learned ourselves, through our own travels.

But there was something more than that:What we really wanted is to slow down time. We wanted the days to last a bit longer, and the weeks to take their time. The years with our children are going too fast. We wanted to put the brakes on our busy lives for a year, and just be with our kids. We wanted a break from the daily morning routine of making lunches, eating breakfast and going out the door in time for school. We needed family time out.

It was the wonderful two months in Europe, full of incredible moments. When we look back at our lives, I know we'll be glad we did it.I know we'll be happy that this is a chapter of the story of our family.

3 . I always had the preference to take on more than I should when I was young. At times, I wanted to prove to myself that I could handle it. At other times, my purpose was to please someone and gain recognition for my efforts. Sometimes this led to stress or frustration.

When I was an IT manager after college graduation I was assigned to work with a wealthy customer and be a go-between (中间人)for my company. I took on the assignment happily, thinking that this might be my time to shine. However, the customer’s demands proved to be more than I could do with. And the company chose to stand by the customer and try to meet his unreasonable requirements rather than stick to what we had originally offered in the contract. As you can imagine, this led to a lot of unexpected problems and arguing with some of the staff who refused to do anything outside their scope (范围) of work. I remember walking into my office one morning, opening my laptop and staring at the blank screen for long, thinking to myself: What should I do? That was a difficult time in my life and then I finally had to give up my first job and left that company sadly.

Perhaps, I thought then, I could find the job that didn’t involve dealing with difficult people and difficult situations. But later I realized: Is this possible in our modern world? No, it is impossible. Now, I know, I shouldn’t run away from the challenges I faced in life: I had to learn how to deal with them. I regret not persevering ( 坚 持 ) in my job. We should train ourselves to look at things from a positive point of view, because that is far better than being trapped in the bad circle depression. I’ve come to see that when faced with difficulties, I should not give up, but persevere.

Often, the water is polluted, World Vision builds wells, pipelines, and rain catchers in these communities. Addyson was at the dinner because her family supports World Vision. Maurine was there because her village been without clean water. World Vision fixed that by building a water station there. Addyson was inspired by Maurine. "People helped Maurine so she could have clean water, and kids are dying because they don't have. Races are one way World Vision raises money to pay for its water projects. 5 . Like you and your pet dog, plants are living things: they eat, drink, and grow. Unlike you and your dog, they can't run away, use fists or teeth, or hide under the covers when they're threatened. But they can fight back.

Why would a plant need to fight back? To avoid being eaten, of course! Plants have several ways of protecting themselves. A plant can grow in a hidden or hard-to-get-to place. Think of plants you've seen growing on steep, rocky cliff (悬崖). Or, a plant could make only some parts of itself attractive to hungry insects and animals. For instance, if a plant produced really tasty leaves, herbivores (creatures that eat only plants) might eat the leaves instead of the seeds, which the plant needs for making more plants. Some plants have sharp or slippery (滑的) parts that discourage insects and other animals from getting too close, like the thorns(刺) on a rosebush.

But the most interesting way that plants fight back is by using chemicals. Plants take minerals from the soil and combine them into chemicals that do a lot of work. For example, plants produce chlorophyll(叶绿素), which helps convert sunshine and water into the sugars that plants eat.

They also produce chemicals to help protect themselves. One kind of tobacco plant releases a chemical into the air whenever small bugs begin to eat it. The chemical signals large bugs, saying "Dinner's ready!" The big bugs come to eat the little ones and save the plant.

Most plants use chemicals in a more direct way against their enemies. In other words, plants make poison.

6 . When bicycle-sharing company oBike pulled out of Singapore abruptly last year, it left the city with unattended bicycles everywhere. Myanmar businessman Mike Than Tun Win saw the perfect opportunity to turn trash (垃圾) into treasure. “What if these bicycles could be distributed to poor students in villages so they can cycle to school?” he thought.

Mr Than, 33, grew up in Mandalay, where he used to walk to school as a student. While traveling through rural (乡村的) areas in Myanmar over the last few years he saw things had not changed. Long lines of children in rural villages continue to walk 30 minutes to an hour just to get to school. “I thought if we could just reduce the time they take, they could spend more time studying, gain more knowledge and increase their chances of getting out of poverty (贫困),” he said.

With that, he started a movement called Lesswalk with the intention of buying bicycles from bike-sharing firms oBike and ofo-which have stopped operations in Singapore — and shipping them to Yangon. He would renew the bicycles before distributing them to teenagers and families living in rural villages in Myanmar, beginning with villages in Mandalay and Sagaing areas.

Over the last three months, the businessman has bought 10,000 bicycles in Singapore and Malaysia. He paid for 5,000 of the bicycles out of his own pocket, with other sponsors paying for the rest.

Mr Than plans to modify (修改) the bicycles so that they can better suit the needs of the children in villages, most of the time they ride around with their little brothers and sisters. I’m planning to add an extra seat at the back so that they can go to school together,” he said. He also plans to remove the digital locks and give each a new one that works better in villages.

Including the cost of shipping, modification and distribution, Mr Than thinks each bicycle might cost him around US $35 to US $40. “I might have to spend more money, but it is better that these bicycles are going to help some people rather than going to waste,” he said.

7 . It’s a common belief that the roles actors play might somehow reflect their true personalities. It’s usually not true, but British actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge, 34, is an exception.

In September,2019 Waller-Bridge took home three Emmy awards for her work on Fleabag–--- best writing in a comedy series, best lead actress, and best comedy series.

Her success is partly because of her family. Descended(遗传) from British nobility, Waller-Bridge was brought up in a free environment. Her mother always told her, “You can be whatever you want if you imagine it.” So Waller-Bridge broke all the rules about what a “good” girl should do. “Our laws and moral codes don’t apply – she lives ... without fear of consequence,” The Sun noted.

That fearlessness extends to being authentic(真实的) in her writing and acting. Unlike the can-do heroines and strong, successful women in many TV dramas, Waller-Bridge shows an imperfect but real character. Just like the character Fleabag, who always found a way to say or do the wrong thing, Waller-Bridge feels her life is a mess. “It resonated(共鸣) with the lives of stressed-out women everywhere in reality – doing their best to find balance in their lives,” a viewer wrote on US movie website IMDb. Variety magazine even calls her an “all-around icon”.

Villanelle in Killing Eve, another hit TV series developed by Waller-Bridge, was a little bit violent but showed no interest for the rules others created, which made many people see themselves in her.

“People have been scared to write characters like these. But I think, now, women are so relieved to have this new template(样板,人设). And, aren’t we all a bit of everything?”Waller-Bridge said in an interview with Indian Express.

With such courage and sincerity, Waller-Bridge is, without a doubt, a “golden girl” in Hollywood, Australian news website The New Daily commented.

1. What is Waller-Bridge good at ?
A.performingB.writing reports
C.directing filmsD.designing
2. From Paragraph 3 we can know ______________.
A.Waller-Bridge family results in her achievements.

C.Waller-Bridge grew up in a rich home.
D.Waller-Bridge is a bad girl in nature.
3. Who definitely interviewed Waller-Bridge according to the passage?
A.The SunB.Variety magazine
C.Indian ExpressD.The New Daily
4. Which is the most impressive characteristic of Waller-Bridge according to the media?

8 . We all often deal with people who complain about the failures and troubles of their daily lives. Life seems to be full of problems for them.     1    . If there were no problems in your job, then your employer would hire a much less capable (能干的) person than you to do the things that don’t need much thought. In the business world, those who are able to solve difficult problems are the ones who are the most valuable to the employer.

2    . The runner who trains for the mile run in the Olympics by running downhill will have no chance of winning the medal at all. The runner who trains by running uphill is far more likely to develop the speed and endurance(耐力)needed to win the medal.

Boxer Gene Tunney broke both hands in the ring.     3    . But at that time his manager felt that he could never again punch(重击)hard enough to be the heavyweight champion. Instead, Tunney determined to become a scientific boxer and win the title as a boxer.     4    . As a puncher, he would not have had a chance against Jack Dempsey, who was considered by many to be the hardest hitter in heavyweight history. 9 . It is every kid’s worst nightmare(噩梦) and six-year-old Jaden Hayes has lived it twice. First he lost his dad when he was only at the age of four and then last month his mom died unexpectedly in her deep sleep.

“I tried and I tried and I tried to get her awake , but... I just couldn’t,” said Jaden.

No one could imagine how heartbroken Jaden was.

But there’s another side to his sadness. A side he first made public a few weeks ago when he told his aunt, Barbara DiCola, and now his guardian(监护人) after both his parents died, that he was sick and tired of seeing everyone sad all the time. And he had a plan to fix it.

“And that was the beginning of it,” said Barbara. “That’s where the adventure began.”

Jaden asked his aunt Barbara to buy a bunch of little toys and bring him to downtown Savannah, Georgia near where he lives, so he could give them away to anyone who will smile to him. “I’m trying to make people smile,” said Jaden.

Jaden targets people who aren’t already smiling and then turns their day around. He’s gone out on four different occasions now and he is always successful. Even if sometimes he doesn’t get exactly the reaction he was hoping for.

It is just so overwhelming to some people that a six-year-old orphan would give away a toy — expecting nothing in return — except a smile.

“I’m depending on it to be 33,000,” said Jaden. When asked if he thinks he can make that goal, he answered: “I think I can.”

10 . “Small enough to fit in your hands but too dangerous to hold” is a good description of the hedgehog. Though small, it is able to protect itself from attack or harm. Thousands of stiff, sharp spines cover the animal’s back and sides. Even though spines provide the hedgehog with effective protection, the animal’s most striking characteristic is its practice of curling up into a tight ball, with its spines sticking out in all directions. The hedgehog curls up if disturbed or frightened—only the strongest animals can open it. It also sleeps in this position, so it is rarely caught unprotected.

Hedgehogs can live in a wide range of climates and lands in East Africa. They must have dry shelters on well-drained soil and a good supply of insects. Nairobi, the capital of Kenya in East Africa, meets these habitat conditions, where hedgehogs are reported to be abundant. A hedgehog uses a small home range with an approximate 120-yard radius (半径范围) from its nest. The hedgehog makes loud noises if its range is invaded by another animal.

The hedgehog wakes up at dusk and begins its activities alone. It uses regular pathways, walking along on its short legs searching for food. A hedgehog will eat about one-third of its body weight in one night. Its favorite foods are insects, earthworms and snails, making it a welcome guest in many gardens—it is even kept as a pet. It is also known to eat eggs, small mammals, birds, frogs, reptiles, and roots. Although not completely immune to poison, hedgehogs have enough resistance to allow them to eat poisonous snakes.

1. While facing danger, the hedgehog ________.
A.stands straight upB.makes loud noises
C.goes back to its nestD.uses its spines for protection
2. The second paragraph is mainly about hedgehog’s ________.
A.appearanceB.habitatC.dietD.hunting skills

4. It can be inferred from the text that ________.

C.hedgehogs always stay on guard against danger
D.there is an increasing trend towards keeping pet hedgehogs
