1 . When my old dog developed major health problems, I knew that watching him fail would be painful, but I wasn’t prepared for the powerful lessons he’d offer in the last year of his life.

Chance was 14 when the problems started. First, he developed a cancer that left him whistling for breath. Then came cataracts(白内障)in both eyes, arthritis(关节炎)in his legs, and a series of mini-strokes(小中风)that threw off his balance. Any one of these misfortunes would have left me begging for relief, but Chance became calmer as the disabilities piled up.

When leg pain left him frozen on the floor, unable to rise for a quick pat as I came home, he didn’t complain. He just lay there patiently, signaling me with his hammering tail, each movement spelling out the value of waiting for the things you want. When his cataracts made steering impossible after dark, he’d stand calmly until I could guide him inside, proving how easy it is to find happiness if you let go of your pride and insecurities and learn to lean on those who love you. When mini-strokes had him walk unsteadily like a drunk, he taught the value of persistence. For days after each attack, he’d fall as he moved about. Yet again and again he’d try to walk, each day moving a few more steps until finally he was able to get outside and back by himself.

There were lessons in so much of what he did, but the key one surely was the importance of obtaining all the joy possible from each experience whether it’s a day lazing under a warm sun or a few minutes appreciating a favorite meal.

For most of our life together, Chance was always rushing ahead, searching out new adventures, then circling back to let me know what lay around the next turn. As an old dog, he did the same thing, using his attitude, instead of his once - fast legs, to show the way.

1. Chance suffered very much from all the diseases he had except for _______.
A.having problem with breathB.walking around awkwardly
C.having trouble drinkingD.losing his eyesight in darkness
2. _______ is the most important lesson the author learned from Chance.

3. It is implied in the passage that _______.
A.people might suffer from different diseases when they grow old
B.people could face aging with courage and dignity

D.pets and masters should stick together helping each other in difficulty
4. Which of the following words best describes the author’s feelings to Chance?

2 . Seasickness and sunburn. Taking care of old people in different situations. My medical friends did their best to persuade me. Everyone said that running away to sea would ruin my career. But after five sleep-deprived (睡眠不足的) years working as a junior doctor, I was willing to take the risk.

Hungry for adventure, I boarded a bright white ship in Singapore. With 2,000 passengers and crew, she was the size of a small town.

To my relief, the hospital was well equipped, with an X-ray machine and a blood analyzer.

That first cruise (航行) was a learning experience, a tight schedule full of safety drills (演习). There was so much new information to take in. Even remembering which of the uniforms to wear each day was a challenge. Most confusing, I often forgot to change my clock when the ship crossed time zones.

As a doctor, I was responsible for the 600 crew including waiters, engineers, cooks and navigators (领航员), and I was on call (随时待命的) for the entire ship.

Far from treating seasickness and sunburn, as I’d been warned, my patients were wide and varied. The ship’s medical center was essentially a floating emergency room, but we didn’t have a team of specialists on hand for a second opinion. With long and unpredictable hours, it required mental toughness.

As you can guess, many of the passengers were elderly. Heart attacks don’t care about geography and emergency evacuations (疏散) were difficult to arrange.

I recall one such patient, who was taken off the ship on a stretcher (担架) halfway through the Panama Canal. After a terrifying ride in the back of an old ambulance, I was relieved that the patient survived long enough to arrive at the hospital in Panama City.

Thankfully, there were several unexpected benefits to the job. I regularly enjoyed the passenger facilities, including the gym, spa and deck buffet (甲板自助餐). I even hosted my own table of passengers in the evenings. On rare days off, I volunteered as a tour guide on trips ashore (在陆地). I got to fly over Alaska in a seaplane and watched a ballet in St Petersburg.

I now understand that being a cruise ship doctor is not a job — it’s a way of life.

One year at sea became two. I lost my career ambitions, but I redefined happiness in my life.

1. What can we know about the author’s first cruise?
A.She missed her job as a doctor.B.She enjoyed a relaxing lifestyle.
C.She had to learn a lot of things.D.She often felt confused about her job duties.
2. Why does the author mention the patient who was sent to the hospital in Panama City?
A.To tell that it was difficult to look after old patients.
B.To prove that being a cruise ship doctor is more tiring.
C.To stress the importance of a well-equipped hospital on the ship.
D.To show it was challenging to handle emergency situations on the ship.
3. What is Paragraph 9 mainly about?
A.The author’s experience as a tour guide.
B.The advantages of being a cruise ship doctor.
C.The loneliness of being the ship’s only doctor.
D.Various facilities for passengers on the cruise ship.
4. What does the author think of her experience as a cruise ship doctor?
A.It was too stressful to tolerate.
B.It helped her build a better career.
C.It changed her understanding of happiness.
D.It provided opportunities to make more friends.

3 . One day a man found a cocoon(茧) of a butterfly in the forest. He sat there for several hours and watched the butterfly. Suddenly a small opening appeared, and the butterfly struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could go no further. So the man decided to help the butterfly.

He took a pair of scissors and cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon so that the butterfly could come out easily. Much to his surprise, the butterfly got a swollen body but very small, weak wings when it came out of the cocoon.

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that the body would grow smaller at any moment and the wings would enlarge and be able to support the body. But neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and small wings. It was never able to fly.

The man was in his kindness, but he did not understand the nature rules. The struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening was God's way of forcing fluid (流体) from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If God allowed us to go through our life without any difficulties, it would make us fail. We would not be as strong as we could have been. And we could never fly.

1. In the first paragraph the butterfly was ______.
A.flying in the forest.B.playing with the man.
C.busy making a cocoon for itself.D.trying to get out of the cocoon.
2. What would have happened to the butterfly without the man's help?
A.The butterfly would come out easily.
B.The butterfly could crawl on its wings.
C.The butterfly would have got to prepared to fly.
D.The butterfly would never gain its freedom.
3. What can we learn from the story?
A.Warm﹣hearted people are always around us.
B.Struggles are necessary in our life sometimes.
C.Helping others could make oneself happy.
D.Where there is a will, there is a way.
4. What is the best title for the story?
A.The struggle for freedom.B.A kind man.
C.The joy of helping a butterfly.D.A lucky butterfly.

4 . The person who set the course of my life was a school teacher named Marjorie Hurd. When 1 stepped off a ship in New York Harbor in 1949, I was a nine-year-old war refugee, who had lost his mother and was coming to live with the father he did not know. My mother, Eleni Gatzoyiannis, had been imprisoned and shot for sending my sisters and me to freedom.

I was thirteen years old when I entered Chandler Junior High. Shortly after I arrived, I was told to select a hobby to pursue during“club hours.” The idea of hobbies and clubs made no sense to my immigrant ears, but I decided to follow the prettiest girl in my class. She led me into the presence of Miss Hurd, the school newspaper adviser and English teacher.

A tough woman with salt-and pepper hair and determined eyes, Miss Hurd had no patience with lazy bones. She drilled us in grammar, assigned stories for us to read and discuss, and eventually taught us how to put out a newspaper. Her introduction to the literary wealth of Greece gave me a new perspective on my war-torn homeland, making me proud of my origins. Her efforts inspired me to understand the logic and structure of the English language. Owing to her inspiration, during my next twenty-five years, I became a, journalist by profession.

Miss Hurd retired at the age of 62. By then, she had taught for a total of 41 years. Even after her retirement, she continually made a project of unwilling students in whom she spied a spark of potential. The students were mainly from the most troubled homes, yet she alternately bullied and charmed them with her own special brand of tough love, until the spark caught fire.

Miss Hurd was the one who directed my grief and pain into writing. But for Miss Hurd, I wouldn't have become & reporter. She was the one who sent me into journalism and indirectly caused all the good things that came after.

5 . Though cell-phones are usually considered devices that connect people, they may make users less socially minded, which is found by a recent study from the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business.

Marketing professors Anastasiya Pocheptsova and Rosellina Ferraro, with graduate student, Ajay T.Abraham, conducted a series of experiments on test groups of cellphone users. The findings appear in their working paper, The Effect of Mobile Phone Use on Prosocial Behavior. Prosocial behavior, as defined in their report, is action intended to benefit another person or society as a whole.

The researchers found that after a short period of cellphone use the subjects were less likely to volunteer for a community service activity, compared to the control-group(对照组). The cell phone users were also less persistent in solving word problems even though they knew their answers would contribute to a monetary(货币的)donation to charity.

The study involved separate groups of college student subjects - both men and women and generally in their early 20s. "We would expect similar effects with people from other age groups," said Ferraro. "Considering the popularity of cellphones, it does have the potential to have wide social effects."

The researchers use previous research to explain the cause of their findings: "The cellphone directly arouses feelings of connection with others, thus fulfilling the basic social need to belong." This results in reducing one’s desire to connect with others face-to-face or to engage in empathic (同情的) and prosocial behavior.

The study also distinguished its subjects from users of other social media — Facebook users — in one of the tests. The researchers found that participants felt more connected to others because of their cell-phones than because of their Facebook accounts, suggesting that this difference in connectedness was the underlying cause of the observed phenomenon.

1. A person will conduct prosocial behavior when he ____.
A.is closely connected to his friends.
B.uses the cellphone for a period of time
C.takes part in community service
D.uses the cell phone a lot
2. What makes Facebook users different from cellphone users?
A.Different accounts.
B.Different purposes.
C.Different human needs.
D.The difference in connection.
3. Compared with cell phone users, Facebook users probably _____.
A.have a lot more friends
B.feel more connected to their friends
C.don’t like to engage in prosocial behavior at all
D.are more likely to engage in prosocial behavior
4. Which could be the best title for the passage?
A.Cell Phone Use Has Broad Social Effects
B.Cell Phone Use Leads to Prosocial behavior
C.Cell Phone Use Is Linked to Selfish Behavior
D.The Harmful Effect of Cell Phone Use

6 . A strict vegetarian is a person who never in his life eats anything derived from animals. The main objection to vegetarianism on a long-term basis is the difficulty of getting enough protein, the body building elements in food. If you have ever been without meat or animal foods for some days or weeds (say, for religious reasons) you will have noticed that you tend to get physically rather weak. You are glad when the fast is over and you get your reward of a succulent meat meal.

Proteins are built up from approximately twenty food elements called “amino-acids”, which are found more abundantly in animal protein than in vegetable protein. This means you have to eat a great deal more vegetable than animal food in order to get enough of these amino-acids. A great deal of the vegetable food goes to waste in this process and from the physiological point of view there is not much to be said in favor of life-long vegetarianism.

The economic side of the question, though, must be considered. Vegetable food is much cheaper than animal food. However, since only a small proportion of tae vegetable protein is useful for body-building purposes, a consistent vegetarian, if he is to gain the necessary 70 grams of protein a day, has to consume a greater bulk of food than his digestive organs can comfortably deal with. In fairness, though, it must be pointed out that vegetarians claim they need far less than 70 grams of protein a day.

Whether or not vegetarianism should be advocated for adults, it is definitely unsatisfactory for growing children, who need more protein than they can get from vegetable sources.

A lacto-vegetarian diet, which includes milk and milk products such as cheese, can, however, be satisfactory as long as enough milk and milk products are consumed.

Meat and cheese are the best sources of usable digestible and next come milk, fish and eggs. Slow and careful cooking of meat makes it more digestible and assists in the breaking down of the protein content by the body. When cooking vegetables, however, the vitamins, and in particular the water-soluble vitamin C, should be lost through overcooking.

1. A vegetarian is a person who _____.
A.eats the meat of animals onlyB.eats the vegetable only
C.drinks milk onlyD.eat nothing at all
2. Compared with vegetable food, animal food contains ____.
A.more proteinsB.more nutrients
C.more mineralsD.more amino-acids
3. Which“fast”in the following sentences has the most similar meaning to the underlined word“fast”(in Para.1)?
A.Johnny ran off as fast as his legs could carry him.
B.Gandhi drank some orange juice to break his three-week fast.
C.I always keep my watch 15 minutes fast.
D.The rainforests are being chopped down at an alarmingly fast rate.
4. From the passage, we know that _____.
A.to gain enough protein, one must consume much more vegetable food than animal food
B.cooking vegetables for long time makes it more digestible
C.milk is the best source of usable animal protein
D.the most common deficiencies in Western diets are those of vitamins
5. Which of the following best reflects the author’s attitude?
A.Vegetarianism is not good for one’s health.
B.Vegetarianism should be advocated for adults.
C.A lacto-vegetarian diet is the best as it provides adequate nutrition.
D.One should have a well-balanced diet containing elements of all foods.

7 . Attachment Parenting is not Indulgent Parenting. Attachment parents do not "spoil" their children. Spoiling is done when a child is given everything that they want regardless of what they need and regardless of what is practical. Indulgent parents give toys for tantrums(发脾气), ice cream for breakfast. Attachment parents don’t give their children everything that they want, they give their children everything that they need. Attachment parents believe that love and comfort are free and necessary. Not sweets or toys.

Attachment Parenting is not "afraid of tears" parenting. Our kids cry. The difference is that we understand that tantrums and tears come from emotions and not manipulation. And our children understand this too. They cry and have tantrums sometimes, of course. But they do this because their emotions are so overwhelming that they need to get it out. They do not expect to be "rewarded" for their strong negative emotions; they simply expect that we will listen. We pick up our babies when they cry, and we respond to the tears of our older children because we believe firmly that comfort is free, love is free, and that when a child has need for comfort and love, it is our job to provide those things. We are not afraid of tears. We don’t avoid them. We hold our children through them and teach them that when they are hurt or frustrated we are here to comfort them and help them work through their emotions.

Attachment Parenting is not Clingy Parenting. I do not cling to my children. In fact, I’m pretty free-range. As soon as they can move they usually move away from me and let me set up a chase as they crawl, run, skip and hop on their merry way to explore the world. Sure, I carry them and hug them and chase them and kiss them and rock them and sleep with them. But this is not me following them everywhere and pulling them back to me. This is me being a home base. The "attachment" comes from their being allowed to attach to us, not from us attaching to them like parental leeches. Attachment Parenting is not Selfish Parenting. It is also not selfless parenting, We are not doing it for us, and we are not doing it to torment (折磨)ourselves.

Attachment parenting is not Helicopter Parenting. I don’t hover, I supervise, I follow, I teach, I demonstrate, I explain. I don’t slap curious hands away, I show how to do things safely, I let my child do the things that my child wishes to do, first with help and then with supervision(监督) and finally with trust, I don’t insist that my 23 month old hold my hand when we walk on the sidewalk because I know that I can recall him with my voice because he trusts me to allow him to explore and he trusts me to explain when something is dangerous and to help him satisfy his curiosities safely.

Most of the negative things that I hear about "attachment parents" are completely off-base and describe something that is entirely unlike Attachment Parenting. Attachment Parenting is child-centric and focuses on the needs of the child. Children need structure, rules, and boundaries. Attachment Parents simply believe that the child and the parent are allies, not adversaries, and that children are taught, not trained.

1. According to the author, what should parents do when their kids cry?
A.Providing comfort and love.
B.Trying to stop kids crying.
C.Holding them till they stop.
D.Rewarding kids with toys.
2. What does "free-range” mean according to the passage?
A.Willing to give kids freedom of movement.
B.Ready to play games with my kids.
C.Curious to watch what games they play.
D.Fond of providing a home base.
3. Which of the following is NOT attachment parenting?
A.Fostering their curiosityB.Helping them do the right thing
C.Showing them how things are doneD.Standing by and protecting
4. What does the passage mainly discuss?
A.How to foster love in childrenB.Different types of parenting
C.How to build child confidenceD.Parent-child relationship

9 . You are given many opportunities in life to choose to be a victim or creator. When you choose to be a victim, the world is a cold and difficult place. “They” did things to you which caused all of your pain and suffering. “They” are wrong and bad, and life is terrible as long as “they” are around. Or you may blame yourself for all your problems, thus internalizing your victimization. The truth is, your life is likely to stay that way as long as you feel a need to blame yourself or others.

Those who choose to be creators look at life quite differently. They know there are people who might like to control their lives, but they don't let this get in the way. They know they have their weaknesses, yet they don't blame themselves when they fail. Whatever happens, they have a choice in the matter. They believe their dance with each sacred moment of life is a gift and that storms are a natural part of life which can bring the rain needed for emotional and spiritual growth.

Victims and creators live in the same physical world and deal with many of the same physical realities, yet their experience of life is worlds apart. Victims plunge themselves into anger, guilt, and other emotions that cause others -and even themselves-to feel like victims, too. Creators consciously choose love, inspiration, and other qualities which inspire not only themselves, but all around them. Both victims and creators always have a choice to determine the direction of their lives.

In reality, all of us play the victim or the creator at various points in our lives. One person, on losing a job or a special relationship, may feel as if it is the end of the world and sink into terrible suffering for months, years, or even a lifetime. Another with the same experience may choose to first experience the grief, then accept the loss and soon move on to be a powerful creative force in his life.

In every moment and every circumstance, you can choose to have fuller, richer life by setting a clear intention to transform the victim within, and by inviting into your life the powerful creator that you are.

1. Compared with victims, creators_____.
A.seem willing to experience failures in life
B.possess the ability to predict future life
C.tend to handle ups and downs of life wisely
D.have the potential to create something new
2. What conclusion can we draw from the passage?
A.Creators and victims meet quite different things in the same world.
B.Creators and victims are responsible for their own lives.
C.Creators are more emotional-than victims.
D.Victims can influence more people than creators.
3. The examples mentioned in Paragraph 4 indicate that_______.
A.strong attachment to sufferings in life pulls people into victims
B.people need family support to deal with challenges in life
C.it takes creators quite a long time to get rid of their pains
D.one's experiences determine his attitude toward life
4. What do you think is the author's purpose in writing this passage?
A.To suggest to readers positive change from victims to creators.
B.To assess victims and creators physically instead of mentally.
C.To publicize the relationship between victims and creators.
D.To define victims and creators in a more scientific way.
