文章大意:这是一篇说明文。想去旅游却预算不够?针对这个问题,本文给出了一些有用的建议。

1 . Travelling can be a fun way to gain life experience, but what if you’re a student and don’t have enough money for a trip? Don’t worry. Here are some useful tips.

Save: This probably is the most important preparation for travelling. Cut expenses (花费) to fatten your wallet so you’ll have more choices about where to go and how to get there.

Plan ahead: Don’t wait until the last minute to plan your trip. Giving yourself several months to get ready can mean security and savings.

Do your homework: No matter where you go, research the places you will visit. Decide what to see. Travel books will provide information on the cheapest hotels and restaurants.

Plan sensibly: Write down how much you expect to spend on food and hotels. Stick to (坚持) your plan, or you may not have enough money to cover everything.

Travel in groups: Find someone who is interested in visiting the same places. By travelling with others you can share costs and experiences.

Work as you go: Need more money to support your trip? Look for work in the places you visit.

Go off the beaten path: Tourist cities may be expensive. You may want to rethink about your trip and go to a less known area. Smaller towns can have many interesting activities (活动) and sights.

Pack necessary things: The most important things to take are not always clothes. Remember to take along medicine in case you get sick and snacks in case you cannot find a cheap restaurant.

By planning sensibly, even students can enjoy their travel. Your travel experiences will be remembered for a lifetime.

2 . Sharon, Aged 22

The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have for one night. It’s best to just learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to do.

David, Aged 19

I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening. But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone; Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry.

Frank, Aged 21

I think almost every kid feels both anxious and excited before their first day. You will probably love it. I know I did. You should join in some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!

Eddie, Aged 20

When I started high school I was really nervous and worried too, especially since I had been home schooled all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone. 文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了职场上男性和女性的差异,以及女性的优势。一些人认为男人天生就能成为更好的领导者,但是其实女性能够更好地领导整个团队。

3 . Regardless of how far we’d like to believe gender (性别) equality in the workplace has come, there’s still a yawning gap between male and female leaders in the professional world. A 2018 statistic shows that women nowadays hold just 5.8 percent of CEO positions at S&P 500 companies, according to Catalyst.

While it’s not a huge shock that women are somewhat underrepresented in leadership positions, what is surprising though, is the fact that females may actually be better suited to lead in almost every area, at least according to new findings from the BI Norwegian Business School.

In their research, Professor Martinsen and Professor Lars Glas surveyed 2,900 managers with a special focus on personality types. The results were clear: Women scored higher than men in four of the five major leadership-centric categories.

While some people believe that men inherently make better leaders—probably because they picture a leader with a commanding voice, which is more typical of men than women—this piece of research suggests that women are better at methodical management and goal-setting, openness, sociability and supportiveness, as well as ability to communicate clearly.

There was one area in which men scored higher than women, though, and that was on emotional stability and ability to face job-related pressure and stress. The results suggest that women are more sensitive to the effects of high-pressure or highly emotional situations.

Obviously, its important to consider individual differences.Anyone, regardless of gender may be an inspiring leader and a competent boss. But next time you're hiring for a management position, you just might want to give the resumes(简历)from female candidates a harder look.

1. What makes us shocked much at leadership positions?
A.Women are worse than men.
B.Men take almost all high positions.
C.There is a huge gap between genders.
D.Women might behave better in nearly every field.
2. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “inherently” in Paragraph 4?
A.properly.B.potentially.C.naturally.D.normally.
3. Which of the following may be the best title of this text?
A.Why Women Make Better Leaders
B.Why Women Are Better Than Men
C.How We Can Figure Out The Boss
D.How We Can Tell Gender Difference
4. Who might have special interest in this article?

文章大意:本文是一篇应用文。四个人表达了他们对放长暑假的看法。

5 . This idea is unkind. Children need to have a good holiday at the end of a busy school year. The long holidays give them time to do things they wouldn’t otherwise(不然) get to do. In my family we go to Ireland and see relatives and friends during the summer vacation. And it might seem long to some people, but time flies when you’re having fun.

—Ruby Mullin

I have good memories of my own long summer holidays, and I love the chance to have days out with my son. I think many parents, especially single parents like me, have made job choices based on being able to have time off for the summer—and now we’ve done that, we don’t want to see things changed.

—Viki Bantock

Having worked at a school that had a four-week summer break instead of the usual six, I’d say longer holidays are better. Teachers are under so much stress now to get good results; most put in lots of hours in the evening and at weekends and feel very tired by the end of term. There is no progress in learning after a six-week holiday, but it only takes a few weeks for students to get back up to speed.

—Marek Kaminski

A shorter summer holiday would be much better. The six-week break seems a thing for another age, when mothers didn’t work and your mum lived round the corner to give you a hand. If I was able to take a six-week holiday, great, I’d love it—but in the real world that isn’t possible. Instead, I end up spending around £600 on childcare for each week when I’m working.

—Nachelle Crowther

1. What does Ruby Mullin usually do during summer holidays?
A.She does part-time jobs.
B.She visits relatives and friends.
C.She prepares for the new school year.
D.She goes travelling around her country.
2. What do we know about Marek Kaminski?
A.He usually works overtime.
B.His family is very supportive.
C.His son doesn’t do well in school.
D.He doesn’t teach school any more.
3. Who holds a different idea from the other three people?
A.Ruby Mullin.
B.Viki Bantock.
C.Marek Kaminski.
D.Nachelle Crowther.

文章大意:这是一篇夹叙夹议文。作者从自身的角度向我们讲述了成长中的一些烦恼,并告诉我们,如果我们意识到这些烦恼只是人生道路上的小障碍,它们就会变成收获。

9 . Growing pains and gains

It’s not easy to grow up. Actually it’s far from easy. Growing up can be a real “pain” for some of us. We are always doing things that someone else makes us do and aren’t allowed to do all the things we like. Sometimes we feel stuck, sometimes we are fearful, and sometimes we just don’t understand why we can’t stay young forever. When we look back on all the challenges in life with a positive attitude, we realize that all of our growing pains actually turn into growing gains!

As a young girl my parents forced my sisters and me to do so many things that I never liked. They made me learn to play the violin and then the piano. At that time I hated music, just because it was what they wanted me to do. But looking back now, I am so glad that my parents encouraged me to take music lessons. Music has enriched my life in so many ways. I realize that my parents and teachers were always pushing me along. not because they wanted me to suffer(受苦)but because they wanted me to succeed in life. They’ve always wanted me to have a better life than they did themselves.

Every moment of our lives is either living or dying, so live life to its fullest! We are all going to experience growing pains, but they are just small pains in life. They might seem so huge at the time but we must be strong. Think about how we would feel if we had no fear and live life like that. The future is ours!

A little hard work and sweat never hurt anyone! If we realize that these pains are just small bumps(凸块)on our road to success we will realize that our growing pains are actually growing gains!

1. According to paragraph 1, we learn that when we are young, ______.
A.life is full of joy
B.life is easy for us
C.we know we can stay young forever
D.we sometimes can’t do things we like
2. When the author was young, she was forced by her parents to ______.
A.take music lessons
B.turn gains into pains
C.look back on challenges
D.live a successful life
3. What does the underlined phrase “to its fullest” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Directly.B.Completely.C.Carefully.D.Terribly.
4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Growing pains are necessary for us to grow up.
B.We all have to experience growing pains.
C.A little hard work and sweat are harmful to us.
D.Life without fear is a better choice for us.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章主要论述了正确认识并恰当利用人工智能以使其造福人类的问题。

10 . Many leading AI researchers think that in a matter of decades, artificial intelligence will be able to do not merely some of our jobs, but all of our jobs, forever transforming life on the earth.

The reason why many people reject this as science fiction is that we’ve traditionally thought of intelligence as something mysterious that can only exist in biological organisms, especially humans. But such an idea is unscientific.

From my point of view as a physicist and AI researcher, intelligence is simply a certain kind of information-processing performed by elementary particles (基本粒子) moving around, and there is no law of physics that says one can’t build machines more intelligent than us in all ways. This suggests that we’ve only seen the tip of the intelligence iceberg and that there is an amazing potential to unlock the full intelligence that is potential in nature and use it to help humanity.

If we get it right, the upside is huge. Since everything we love about civilization is the product of intelligence, amplifying our own intelligence with AI has the potential to solve tomorrow’s toughest problems. For example, why risk our loved ones dying in traffic accidents that self-driving cars could prevent or dying of cancers that AI might help us find cures for? Why not increase productivity through automation and use AI to accelerate our research and development of affordable sustainable (可持续的) energy?

I’m optimistic that we can develop rapidly with advanced AI as long as we win the race between the growing power of our technology and the knowledge with which we manage it. But this requires giving up our outdated concept of learning from mistakes. That helped us win the race with less powerful technology. We messed up with fire and then invented fire extinguishers (灭火器), and we messed up with cars and then invented seat belts. However, it’s an awful idea for more powerful technologies, such as nuclear weapons or super intelligent AI-where even a single mistake is unacceptable and we need to get things right the first time.

1. How do many people feel about leading AI researchers’ predictions?
A.Worried.B.Curious.
C.Doubtful.D.Disappointed.
2. What does the author think of intelligence?
A.We know little about it.B.It belongs to human beings.
C.It is too difficult to understand.D.We have a good command of it.
3. What does the underlined word “upside” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Cost.B.Potential.
C.Quantity.D.Advantage.
4. What’s important for us in the race between people and technology?
A.Learning from failure.B.Increasing our intelligence.
C.Avoiding making mistakes.D.Making accurate predictions.
