文章大意:本文是一篇应用文。四个人表达了他们对放长暑假的看法。

2 . This idea is unkind. Children need to have a good holiday at the end of a busy school year. The long holidays give them time to do things they wouldn’t otherwise(不然) get to do. In my family we go to Ireland and see relatives and friends during the summer vacation. And it might seem long to some people, but time flies when you’re having fun.

—Ruby Mullin

I have good memories of my own long summer holidays, and I love the chance to have days out with my son. I think many parents, especially single parents like me, have made job choices based on being able to have time off for the summer—and now we’ve done that, we don’t want to see things changed.

—Viki Bantock

Having worked at a school that had a four-week summer break instead of the usual six, I’d say longer holidays are better. Teachers are under so much stress now to get good results; most put in lots of hours in the evening and at weekends and feel very tired by the end of term. There is no progress in learning after a six-week holiday, but it only takes a few weeks for students to get back up to speed.

—Marek Kaminski

A shorter summer holiday would be much better. The six-week break seems a thing for another age, when mothers didn’t work and your mum lived round the corner to give you a hand. If I was able to take a six-week holiday, great, I’d love it—but in the real world that isn’t possible. Instead, I end up spending around £600 on childcare for each week when I’m working.

—Nachelle Crowther

1. What does Ruby Mullin usually do during summer holidays?
A.She does part-time jobs.
B.She visits relatives and friends.
C.She prepares for the new school year.
D.She goes travelling around her country.
2. What do we know about Marek Kaminski?
A.He usually works overtime.
B.His family is very supportive.
C.His son doesn’t do well in school.
D.He doesn’t teach school any more.
3. Who holds a different idea from the other three people?
A.Ruby Mullin.
B.Viki Bantock.
C.Marek Kaminski.
D.Nachelle Crowther.

3 . To most of us, school means classes, teachers, schedules, grades and tests. But for the children at Sudbury Valley School, Massachusetts, school is very different.

Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do whatever they want to. There are no teachers —only “staff members”. The idea behind this is that you do not need to make children learn, because children want to learn anyway. “You do not need to say to a three-year-old, ‘Go to explore your environment.’ You can’t stop them!” says Daniel Greenberg, a founder of the school. “But if you make children do what you want all day, they will lose all taste for learning.”

At Sudbury Valley School, you will permit children to talk, read, paint, cook, work on computers, study French, play the piano, climb trees, or just run around. Two boys spent three years just fishing!

The other way that Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules. Every week, there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote each—even the four-year-olds. They decide the school rules, how to spend the school budget, and even which staff they want and do not want any more.

When the school first opened in 1968, people said it would never work. But today, the school has 200 students, and 80% of its students go on to college. Even the two boys who went fishing all the time have successful careers today. One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist.

1. What is the main topic of the article?
A.An unusual school.B.Children’s hobbies.
C.A school without rules.D.Education in the US.
2. What does the school believe?
A.Teachers cannot teach children well.
B.Children learn best when they do what they want to do.
C.Learning is for adults—children should only play.
D.Children should only learn about one thing at a time.
3. What does Daniel Greenberg say about three-year-olds?
A.They love learning.B.They are very naughty.
C.They want to be outside all the time.D.They are too young to learn anything.
4. Who has the most power in the school meetings?
A.The older children have more power than the younger children.
B.A child has more power than an adult.
C.The younger children have more power than the older children.
D.Everybody has equal power.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了社会养老问题,并就如何提高老人的生活质量提出了一些建议。

4 . A serious problem for today’s society is who should be responsible for our elderly and how to improve their lives. It is not only a financial problem but also a question of the system we want for our society. I would like to suggest several possible solutions to this problem.

First, employers should take the responsibility for their retired employees. To make this possible, a percentage of profits should be set aside for this purpose. But when a company must take life-long responsibility for its employees, it may suffer from a commercial disadvantage due to higher employee costs. Another way of solving the problem is to return the responsibility to the individual. This means each person must save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement. This does not seem a very fair model since some people have enough trouble paying for their daily life without trying to earn extra to cover their retirement years. This means the government might have to step in to care for the poor.

In addition, the government could take responsibility for the care of the elderly. This could be financed through government taxes to increase the level of pensions. Furthermore, some institutions (慈善机构、福利院)should be created for senior citizens, which can help provide a comfortable life for them. Unfortunately, as the present situation in our country shows, this is not a truly viable answer. The government can seldom afford to care for the elderly, particularly when it is busy trying to care for the young .

One further solution is that the government or social organizations establish some working places especially for the elderly where they are independent.

To sum up, all these options have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore , it is reasonable to expect that some combinations of these options may be needed to provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations.

A.The problem faced by the old in society
B.Why we should take responsibility for the old
C.How we can improve the lives of the old
D.Where the old can go to get their pensions

A.Set aside some profits to help people with problems after they retire.
B.Increase savings levels of people during their working years.
C.Increase the discounts(打折)for food and transport for the old.
D.Make available pensions for those who have retired.
3. The underlined word “viable” most probably means ________ .
A.impossibleB.practicalC.usefulD.successful
4. What can be concluded from the passage ?
A.Taking care of the old is mainly an issue (问题) of the old.
B.Employers should allow their workers to retire at a later age.
C.Becoming independent should be the goal of most old people.
D.There is no single solution to the problems of the old.

5 . Are you worried about moving up to Senior High school? It can be a new experience, but you shouldn’t worry. We’ve put together a guide on how to survive the first week.

You’re not alone!

Remember everybody else in your year is on the same boat. They may not realize it, but they’re just as nervous as you are. Moving to Senior High school is an opportunity, not a problem. Things are different and all you need to do is be polite and learn the new rules.

Teachers are ready to help!

If you’re unsure what to do or are worried about anything then you had better ask for help. Teachers are probably the best people to turn to as they’re experienced in helping new students. Some Senior High schools also have a “friends system”. If your school has this, then you will be paired with an older student. They will look out for you and help you if you have any problems or questions.

All change

There are lots of differences between Junior High school and Senior High school. You’ll have a homework diary or a student planner. You will have your lessons with different teachers in different rooms. You will have homework for different subjects on different days, so make sure you get organized. Make sure you have a copy of your school timetable written down so you know which rooms your classes are in and on which days you will have your different subjects.

Other points

If you’ve got an elder brother or sister at the school then ask them for advice.

Be yourself! It sounds simple, but people will know you much better if you just act naturally.

Having early nights makes a difference and you’ll find it easier to get up in the morning!

A.Other students have similar feelings to yours.
B.Other students have to learn boating with you.

6 . What will restaurants look like in the future? What would your dinner taste like if a robot cooked it? A robot restaurant in Tianjin may give you the answers.

Covering an area of over 400 square meters with a total of 112 seats, the X Future Restaurant is a robot restaurant opened in November 2018. The restaurant has amazed customers with its fully-automated technology, which covers every step of the dining experience, from ordering to cooking to serving the dishes and even taking payment.

Entering the restaurant, one can order dishes by simply scanning the QR codes on the table. There are over 40 choices of dishes. After taking the order, “robot cooks” prepare dishes using fixed time, temperature and ingredients designed by famous Chinese cooks.

8 . Kids and science seem to be made for each other!

The basic science is a combination of thought and experiment called the scientific method. It’s where you start with an idea, create a way to prove or disprove your idea, and show what you learned based on facts. Learning to follow this process helps you think logically and carefully. These important thinking skills can be used in many areas of study. To give a child practice with these thinking skills is like giving vitamins to a developing mind.

One of the greatest things we can teach our children is to love learning. Learning science is a great way to do so. Children are easy to be interested in science. Because much of science is hands-on, it attracts most children. Nothing makes a child sit up and take notice like the “WOW!” of a great science showing.

Science opens doors to many subjects at school. Building love for science can be helpful in other areas of study. For example, one cannot love science for very long without becoming good at its language-math! So science encourages children to study math. An interest in science is an interest in how things were once understood compared to how they are understood now. Thus studying science lends itself easily to studying history. And after you do an experiment, you need to write a lab report. Therefore, writing becomes an important part of science.

Science is the basic thing for much of our life. The science of farming shows how our food is produced; biomedical science keeps us healthy; even our beds these days are designed according to scientific facts. We almost eat, sleep and breathe with the help of science! When we prepare the next generation of voters, creators and policy makers, it is important to make sure they are not only comfortable but also good at science.

1. According to Paragraph 2, what does learning the scientific method mean to kids?
A.Learning to do experiments.B.Learning many areas of study.

2. Which of the following statements would the author agree with?
A.Science is too difficult for children.B.Children usually consider science boring.
C.Science can arouse children's interest in learning.D.Children who are careless shouldn't learn science.

A.He usually has no time for other subjects.B.He usually loses interest in other activities.
C.He is usually bad at such subjects like history.D.He is likely to learn many other subjects well.
4. What would be the best title for the text?

10 . Louis Pasteur was born in Dole, France on December 27, 1822. His family was poor, and during his early education, Pasteur was an ordinary student who enjoyed art and singing. However, when Pasteur was exposed to science as a teenager, he knew he found his career.

In 1848, Pasteur went to college to become a science teacher. He then became a chemistry professor at the University of Strasbourg. He got married in 1849 and had five children. However, three died young from typhoid fever (伤寒). It was the deaths of his children that drove Pasteur to investigate infectious diseases in order to find a cure. During Pasteur’s time, people believed that bacteria appeared due to “spontaneous generation”(自然发生). They thought that the bacteria just appeared out of nowhere. Pasteur carried out experiments to see if this was true.

Through his experiments he proved that bacteria were living things that came from other living things. They didn’t just spontaneously appear. This was a major discovery in the study of biology and earned Pasteur the title of Father of Microbiology.

As Pasteur learned more about bacteria, he began to think they may be the cause of diseases in humans. When the French silk market was threatened by a disease to silkworms(蚕), Pasteur decided to investigate. He discovered that this disease was caused by bacteria. By killing them from the silkworm farms, he was able to cease the disease and save the French silk business.
