文章大意:这是一篇议论文。文章介绍了对“授之以鱼不如授之以渔”的不同理解,即在别人挨饿时,不是给他灌输知识,而是先给他一条鱼,让他消除饥饿。文章解释了这么做的原因以及建议。

1 . You’ve heard an old Chinese saying before: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. You may even be nodding your head in agreement right now. However, we can have a different understanding about it.

When a person is starving, that’s not the time to fill their head with knowledge but to first give the person a fish—eradicating their hunger—and only then teach them to fish. Far too often, people ignore this common sense first step. They see someone who is struggling, and they rush to offer wisdom. “Let me tell you what I’d do in your position,” a well-meaning individual might offer.

But few of us understand the anxiety, confusion and uncertainty that come with overwhelming need. People meeting with personal disasters don’t have the ability to think straight. Their nerves may be shot. Their confidence may be non-existent. Can you imagine what it would be like to be in that person’s situation?

Rushing to offer a struggling person long-term advice is a waste of time. Instead, it makes far more sense to help them regain their emotional balance. Once their ears, heart and mind open, you’ll have an opportunity to teach a new skill.

But how do we know whether a person needs a fish before a fishing lesson? Two things: One is the ability to pay attention. We need to know whether the other person is open and receptive, or looking at the world through narrowed eyes? You can’t just take their words but have to look at how the person acts and what they don’t say. The other is empathy (共情). The more successful you are, the harder it is to imagine what it must be like to be the opposite. Try to create a safe environment for emotional acceptance before the fishing lesson.

1. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A.To illustrate a concept.B.To introduce the background.
C.To bring in a new viewpoint.D.To put up an example.
2. What does the underlined word “eradicating” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Getting rid of.B.Paying attention to.
C.Making up for.D.Putting up with.
3. What should we do first for those struggling person?
A.Get them to think straight.
B.Teach them a new skill.
C.Give them long term advice.
D.help regain their emotional balance.
4. Which does the author probably agree with according to the last paragraph?
A.Live and learn.
B.Put yourself in others’ shoes.
C.Never teach a fish to swim.
D.Don’t teach old dogs new tricks.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章介绍了古铁雷斯利用在垃圾堆捡到的图书建立了一个面向低收入家庭儿童的社区图书馆,从而变废为宝的故事。

2 . Gutiérrez’s life would never be the same again after finding a copy of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy in the garbage 20 years ago. It happened while he was driving his garbage truck through wealthier neighbourhoods at night and seeing abandoned books. It aroused his desire to start rescuing books from the garbage. He used to take home between 50 and 60 books every morning. Eventually, he turned his book collection into a community library for children from low-income families.

Colombia’s capital city of Bogota has 19 public libraries. However, these libraries tend to be far away from where rural and poorer communities live. The option of buying new books is non-existent for families struggling to make ends meet. Gutiérrez’s community library is a true representation of how one man’s garbage can be another’s treasure.

Gutiérrez grew up poor, and his family could not afford to educate him beyond primary school. Nevertheless, his mother was a passionate reader and read stories to him every night. Her love for books left a deep impression on Gutiérrez.

Today, his makeshift community library, called “The Strength of Words”, occupies most of his home in southern Bogota, and is piled from floor to ceiling with fiction and non-fiction titles. Everything from school textbooks to storybooks can be found in his collection of more than 20.000 books! As word began to spread about his amazing project, people began sending him thousands more books to grow his library.

Despite having done so much for his community, Gutiérrez is not yet content to call it a day. He continues to search through garbage cans for reading materials. Today, the Gutiérrez family does not merely want to start libraries in neighbourhoods. They want to create spaces for school children to spend their time reading.

Gutiérrez’s journey to give back to his local community is an amazing example of how every one of us can improve the lives of those around us. How might we take a leaf out of Gutiérrez’s books and impact the less fortunate around us?

1. What inspired Gutiérrez to rescue unwanted books?
A.Leo Tolstoy’s life.B.The abandoned Anna Karenina.
C.Children’s living conditions.D.A community-library.
2. Why did Gutiérrez start “The Strength of Words”?
A.To create a harmonious neighborhood.
B.To give his mother sufficient books.
C.To improve the community life.
D.To facilitate children’s reading.
3. What can best describe Gutiérrez?
A.caringB.passionate.
C.well-educated.D.talented.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.Gutiérrez has a strong desire for reading.
B.Gutiérrez’s kindness moves other people.
C.How does Gutiérrez turns books from garbage to treasure.
D.How does Gutiérrez to be model of education.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了建筑师Frank Lloyd Wright的一些著名建筑以及父母带孩子参观时的体验感受。

4 . The whimsy (奇想) and inventiveness that helped Frank Lloyd Wright’s works stand out a century ago continue to attract new generations of architecture fans. Here’s why experiencing Wright sites can get your kids to look at the world with an architect’s eye.

Fallingwater in Southwestern Pennsylvania is Wright’s most famous building. “Kids are quick to notice they could climb on it,” says director of education Ashley Andrykovitch. She discourages anyone from treating the masterpiece like a jungle gym (攀爬架), but loves using the house as a jumping-off point for teaching children about the art of designing buildings. “A tour of Fallingwater makes them look at the built environment differently,” she says.

In the suburb of Oak Park, Chicago, there are 25 of Wright’s buildings. This is the best spot to see the architect’s creative world. On guided tours, visitors see the inventive spaces Wright designed for his own children. You can also take children on hunts for Wright buildings here, either on guided bike tours or using a brochure sold at the Home and Studio bookstore. “Tell them what to look out for and then see if they can discover all the properties created by the early 20th century legend, which is the most difficult but enjoyable part of the tour,” Kate Coogan, manager for education at the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust says.

To help kids appreciate what makes Wright’s creations so special, consider a sleepover (在外过夜) in a property he designed. Middle-school math teacher Shari Kagan and her two teenage sons spent a weekend at one of Wright’s buildings. After check-in, her kids eagerly explored every angle. “It was like they were searching for gifts on Christmas morning,” she says. After an exciting day, the Kagans sat on the floor in the TV-free family room to examine copies of the house’s blueprints (蓝图). Now the kids are noticing architecture wherever they go. “They’ll say, ‘Look at the lines on that house. I wonder what inspired it,’” Kagan says.

1. How can a visit to Fallingwater benefit kids according to Ashley?
A.It encourages them to travel responsibly.B.It can excite their interest in architecture.
C.It encourages them to jump and climb for fun.D.It can increase their environmental awareness.
2. Which is the most challenging activity on an Oak Park tour according to Coogan?
A.Finding all Wright buildings there.B.Traveling around the area by bike.
C.Designing a brochure inspired by Wright.D.Drawing the playroom of Wright’s children.
3. How did the Kagans spend the night at the Emil Bach House?
A.They searched for gifts in the house.B.They watched TV in the family room.
C.They studied how Wright designed the house.D.They explored the mathematics behind architecture.
4. For whom is the text mainly written?
A.Architects.B.Tour guides.C.Museum directors.D.Parents.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了人们通过不同的方式来回收利用万圣节被使用过的南瓜,从而保护环境,避免浪费。

5 . More than one billion pounds of pumpkins are grown in the U.S. every year, and after they’ve been used on Halloween, millions of them will end up in a landfill (垃圾填埋地) and become methane, which is a greenhouse gas. “Compared to carbon dioxide, methane warms the atmosphere in a shorter amount of time, which means it’s a particularly strong cause of climate change,” says Kay McKeen, the executive director at SCARCE, an environmental education organization based in Illinois.

That’s why, in 2014, McKeen and her SCARCE co-workers began Pumpkin Smash, a collection event where local Illinois residents can bring their rotting (正在腐烂的) pumpkins to 69 different locations to send them off to compost bins (堆肥箱), and smash (粉碎) them to pieces. “It puts nutrients back in our soil, it saves water, and it doesn’t make methane gas — it’s just a win-win,” says McKeen. By their own calculations, the group has saved 538 tons of pumpkins from the landfill.

But not everyone has access to pumpkin-smashing events. Since pumpkins are a great source of human nutrition, some people turn to home cooking. “Not one pumpkin goes to the landfill from our kitchen. It is a common ingredient in baked food like muffins, bread, and pies,” says Una Hagen. Pumpkin flesh can also be fermented (发酵), notes Elizabeth Flournoy: “I have been making wine from pumpkins!”

Some people throw pumpkins outside for deer, or raccoons to eat. While pumpkins are generally safe for wildlife to eat, experts say it’s best to let them hunt for their own food. Feeding wild animals can spread disease when animals gather. Some states, like Colorado, fine residents who intentionally feed wildlife. And trying to feed animals like deer can unintentionally attract animals like bears and lead to human-wildlife conflict. Instead, see if any local farms are collecting pumpkins as treats for their pigs, goats, and other animals — or for any other purposes. The website Pumpkins for Pigs shows animal farms around the country that take uncarved and unpainted pumpkins.

1. What can we learn about Pumpkin Smash?
A.Its aim is to reduce pumpkin pollution.B.It collects pumpkins worldwide.
C.Its effect has been questioned.D.It is highly profitable.
2. How does Una Hagen deal with pumpkins?
A.By making food with them.B.By using them as fertilizer.
C.By using them for decoration.D.By sending them to landfills.
3. Why do experts disagree with feeding wild animals with pumpkins?
A.It is a waste of food.B.It disturbs the ecological balance.
C.Pumpkins are harmful to wild animals.D.Wild animals may cause harm to humans.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.Pumpkin events.B.Problems caused by pumpkins.
C.Ways to give pumpkins a second life.D.Reasons to lead a pumpkin-free lifestyle.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者患有阅读障碍,但是母亲引导作者付出更多的努力,作者也最终过上了成功的生活。

6 . In the seventh grade I realized I was dyslexic, which made it difficult for me to read and spell. I did really badly in my history course, so my mother said to me, “I’ll work with you for a full week. I’m going to show you what you can do if you put in the right amount of effort.” So we did. We worked on history for a full week, an extra hour every day. But I still failed the test as always.

By the time I got to college, things didn’t get better. I would wait in registration lines all day to sign up for extra courses. Then I would go around the first day of class and ask each professor: “What’s your policy on misspelling?” If he said, “Three misspellings is a fail,” I’d drop it.

Although I was an academic failure, I had a great time. I had many friends and I was always popular. I was a good football player. I never had a day when I would think “People don’t like me.”

In spite of my obvious weaknesses, I became successful in my career, so much so that people say to me, “So you’ve overcome dyslexia.” No. I don’t overcome it. I just learn to compensate for it. Some easy things are hard for me. Most people read 500 words a minute. I only read 200. I try not to dial a phone because I sometimes have to dial three times to get the number right. I owe my successful career to my writing instructor, Ralph Salisbury. He looked past my misspellings and gave me encouragement. So I always feel confident.

The real fear that I have for dyslexic people is not that they have to struggle with their reading skills or that they can’t spell correctly, but that they will quit on themselves before they get out of school.

1. When the author did badly in the course, what did his mother do?
A.She led him to make more efforts.B.She taught him history in person.
C.She blamed his laziness bitterly.D.She sent him to an extra class.
2. Which of the following is true according to the text?
A.The author always dials three times to make a phone call.
B.The author cures himself without anyone’s help.
C.The author failed in many extra courses.
D.The author leads a successful life.
3. The meaning of the underlined phrase “compensate for” is equal to ______.
A.fight forB.make up forC.struggle withD.put up with
4. What is the author’s suggestion for dyslexic people?
A.They should make more efforts to practice reading skills.
B.They should turn to a writing instructor for help.
C.They should not give up on themselves.
D.They should ignore the disease.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文主要介绍了一种新研发出来的软机器人,可以从步行到游泳无缝切换,轻松地从陆地转移到海上。

9 . Most animals can quickly transition from walking to jumping to crawling to swimming if needed without making major adjustments. Most robots cannot. But researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have created soft robots that can seamlessly shift from walking to swimming or crawling to rolling.

“We were inspired by nature to develop a robot that can perform different tasks and adapt to its environment without adding actuators (执行器) or complexity,” said Carmel Majdi, a professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department in CMU’s College of Engineering. “Our bistable (双稳态) actuator is simple, stable and durable, and lays the foundation for future work on dynamic, reconfigurable soft robotics.”

Matching how animals transition from walking to swimming to crawling to jumping is a big challenge for bio-inspired and soft robotics. For example, one robot the team created has four curved actuators attached to the corners of a cellphone-sized body made of two bistable actuators.

On land, the curved actuators act as legs, allowing the robot to walk. In the water, the bistable actuators change the robot’s shape, putting the curved actuators in an ideal position to act as propellers so it can swim.

“You need to have legs to walk on land, and you need to have a propeller to swim in the water. Building a robot with separate systems designed for each environment adds complexity and weight,” said Majidi. “We use the same system for both environments to create an efficient robot.”

The team created two other robots: one that can crawl and jump, and one inspired by caterpillars and pill bugs that can crawl and roll. The actuators require only a hundred millisecond of electrical charge to change their shape, and they are durable.

In the future, the robots could be used in rescue situations or to interact with sea animals or coral. Using heat-activated springs in the actuators could open up applications in environmental monitoring, haptics (触觉) and reconfigurable electronics and communication.

1. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “seamlessly” in paragraph 1?
A.Theoretically.B.Formally.
C.Perfectly.D.Vividly.
2. How does Majidi sound when speaking of their actuator?

3. What may the robots be applied to in the future?
A.Searching for lost items.
B.Competing with human labors.
C.Making heat-activated springs.
D.Connecting with marine animals.

A.Soft robot shifts from land to sea with ease.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述音乐爱好者们为了拯救英国的现场音乐产业,音乐场所信托基金(MVT)筹集资金,购买全国9个基层音乐场所的所有权,保护他们的未来。

10 . Music lovers are overjoyed! In order to save the live music industry in the UK, the Music Venue Trust (MVT) has been raising money to buy nine properties of grassroots music venues across the country and protect their future.

In the last 20 years, 35% of grassroots music venues have had to close, and in 2023, one music venue is having to shut down every week. While a giant £3. 6 million was put into the grassroots music industry during lockdown as part of the Cultural Recovery Fund, 67% of that was paid directly to landlords.

With rents rising, and landlords getting bigger and better offers from developers, music venues are in an incredibly sensitive position. MVT reports that around 93% currently only have 18 months left on their tenancies.

“The people who own the buildings in which music is played and enjoyed are committed more to profitability than supporting the business,” says Mark Davyd, CEO and founder of MVT. “Unfair rent rises can make previously practicable venues suddenly unsustainable, while venues in property hotspots find themselves driven out to make way for building flats. Short leases (租约) prevent those venues which want to raise funds to improve facilities and make the possibility of government support less likely.

MVT has a solution: Put the properties in the hands of the people who truly love them. Their campaign, “Own Our Venues”, seeks to buy up venue properties, offering shares to musicians and music lovers who want to see these venues thrive(繁荣). Davyd believes this is the most important contribution they can make to the industry. “The best people to own our venues are the people who love them, need them and use them.”

MVT hopes to remind people how important grassroots music venues are to the community. With the UK music industry worth over £5.8 billion, these venues are vital to the development of new and upcoming musicians, and music lovers alike.

1. Why does the Music Venue Trust buy properties of grassroots music venues?
A.To make way for flats.B.To help live music develop.
C.To attract more music lovers.D.To popularize grassroots music.
2. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The worth of grassroots music venues.
B.The high rent for grassroots music venues.
C.The challenges grassroots music venues face.
D.The investment grassroots music venues need.
3. What does Mark Davyd mainly talk about in paragraph 4?
A.The profit that the building owners make.
B.The possible results of the failure of grassroots music venues.
C.The government’s attitude towards grassroots music venues.
D.The reasons for grassroots music venues’ failure to sustain.
4. How will MVT address the problem of grassroots music venues?
A.By buying a few shares of the music venues.
B.By letting music lovers own the venues.
C.By offering shares to the owner of the venues.
D.By putting the venues in the hands of the government.
