文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一项新的研究发现,在6到10岁时参加有组织的体育活动的孩子在12岁时出现情绪问题的可能性较小。

1 . Thinking of getting your child to take up a sport that involves (牵涉) a coach or instructor? Good news: A new study finds that children who take part in organized physical activity at a young age are less likely to have emotional difficulties by the time they turn 12.

“The elementary school years are a key time in child development,” said Frederic N. Brier, a psycho-education professor who led the study, published this month in Pediatric Research. “And every parent wants to raise a well-adjusted child.”

Researchers followed a birth group over time to examine whether continual participation in organized sport from 6 to 10 would lower risks related with emotional distress(情绪困扰), anxiety, shyness, social pullback at the age of 12. Their goal was to test this question as critically as possible by eliminating (排除) pre-existing child or family conditions that could offer an alternative explanation.

To do this, Brier and his team examined data from a group of children born in 1997 or1998 who are part of the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development. From age 6 to 10, mothers reported whether their children participated in organized physical activity. At the age of 12, teachers reported on the children’s levels of emotional distress, anxiety, shyness, and social pullback at school.

“The results revealed that children who participated frequently from 6 to 10 showed fewer instances of those factors at the age of 12 than their peers who did not join in physical activity in a continual way,” said Brier. “We found these benefits above and beyond pre-existing individual and family characteristics.”

“Getting kids actively involved in organized sport seems to promote global development. This involvement appears to be good on a socio-emotional level and not just because of physical benefits. Being less emotionally distressed at the key stage between elementary and high school is a priceless benefit for children, as they are about to enter a much larger universe with bigger academic challenges. This research supports current parental guidelines promoting children’s involvement in physical activity,” Brier concluded.

1. Why did Brier’s team follow a birth group over time?
A.To check their health.B.To test their guess.
C.To learn about their study.D.To find out suitable sports.
2. How did the researchers reach their conclusion?
A.By analyzing data.B.By doing survey on teachers.
C.By doing experiments.D.By organizing physical activities.
3. What does Brier think of the results?
A.They are of little value.B.They need further testing.
C.They are against their guess.D.They are up to his expectation.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.It’s easy to raise a well-adjusted child
B.Organized sport promotes emotional difficulties
C.School education is critical for child development
D.Sticking to organized sport can help kids adjust

Sports Day was getting close in the school. All the children were very excited and were practicing for the big race. John, one of the fast runners of the school, was confident that he would win for he was not doing anything at all. “You have to work hard to come first in the race John. You are not practicing at all,” said John’s mother.

“Mom, you know how fast I am! Why should I waste my time running? Only I will win; no one else will win!”said John. “John, you may be right but talent (天赋) without hard work is not good at all. This laziness of yours will cost you greatly,” his mother warned him. John just laughed. He was so confident that he would win the trophy (奖杯) as no one else in his class was as fast as he was!.

Tim, a classmate of John, was also participating (参加) in the running race. He was not a fast runner. However, he practiced till late at night and had developed great endurance (持久力) to run the race.

There were a few days left for the Sports Day but John did not practice at all. On the other hand, Tim practiced day and night.

The Sports Day was almost around the corner but John was confident that no one could beat him and had not practiced at all. But Tim with his hard work had become a very great runner.

At last, the Sports Day arrived. All the students showed up on the ground to cheer their favorites. The coach blew the whistle (口哨) and everyone began to run toward the finishing line. It was so exciting. John and Tim left all the racers far behind. Both of them were neck to neck.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了五种不同寻常的运动。

5 . FIVE UNUSUAL SPORTS

What sports are you into? Football? Tennis? Swimming? If you’re looking for a change, you might like to try one of these.

Octopush

Octopush (or underwater hockey as it’s also known) is a form of hockey that’s played in a swimming pool. Participants wear a mask and snorkel and try to move a puck (水球) across the bottom of a pool. The sport has become popular in countries such as the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. An ability to hold your breath for long periods of time is a definite plus.

Zoobombing

Zoobombing involves riding a children’s bike down a steep hill. The sport originated in the US city of Portland in Oregon in 2002. Participants carry their bikes on the MAX Light Rail and go to the Washington Park station next to Oregon Zoo (which is why it’s called “zoobombing”). From there, they take a lift to the surface, and then ride the mini-bikes down the hills in the area.

Office Chair Racing

Office Chair Racing consists of racing down a hill in office chairs that can reach speeds of up to 30kph. Strict rules are in place for competitors: they’re allowed to fit in-line skate wheels and handles to their chairs, but no motors. “We check each chair carefully in advance,”one of the organizers explained. The participants race in pairs wearing protective padding as they launch themselves from a ramp (坡道). Prizes are given to the fastest competitors and also for the best-designed chairs.

Fit 4 Drums

Fit 4 Drums is a new form of cardio-rhythmic exercise. Led by an instructor, the class involves beating a specially-designed drum with two sticks while dancing at the same time. It’s the first group fitness activity where you get to play a drum while getting an intense workout. A sense of rhythm is a definite advantage!

Horse Boarding

Horse Boarding involves being towed behind a horse at 35mph on an off-road skateboard. Professional stuntman Daniel Fowler Prime invented the sport after he strung a rope between his off-road “mountain board” and a horse. Participants stand on a board while holding onto a rope, attempting to maintain their balance as the horse gallops (疾驰) ahead. “The horse rider and the horse have to work together because if they don’t, the horse goes flying,”Daniel explained.

So, which sport would you like to try?

1. What do you need to do if you want to play Octopush?
A.Swim on the surface of the water.B.Hold your breath before the sport.
C.Play it by the side of the seashore.D.Wear underwater breathing devices.
2. Which activity will you choose if you want to take part in collective fitness?
A.ZoobombingB.Office Chair Racing
C.Fit 4 DrumsD.Horse Boarding
3. What proverb does Horse Boarding tell us?
A.The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
B.Never let your feet run faster than your shoes.
C.The bigger they come, the harder they fall.
D.Every chess master was once a beginner.

7 . A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.

I remembered back to my 7th year in school. In my first P. E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.

The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!

The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.

Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces (鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!

At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”

By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.

By mile 21, I was starving!

As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign She is my biggest fan.

She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a. m. or questioned my expenses on running.

I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.

Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels (世俗标签), I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.
