The science teacher, Mr. Moose, decided that the school would have a paper airplane contest (比赛). Each student would design a paper airplane. And then they would take turns throwing their airplanes. The student whose airplane flew the farthest would win.

When Mr. Moose announced the paper airplane contest, all the students were very excited. Paul, who was on the wrestling (摔跤) team, said to other students. “I am the strongest. And I will be able to throw my airplane the farthest.”

However, another student, Brian, was thinking how he could win. He did not play any sports and was not very strong. But he loved airplanes and really wanted to win the contest.

Brian knew what he had to do. He went to the store and bought a big pile of paper. When he got home, he took the paper into the backyard. He took a piece of paper and folded (折叠) an airplane. It didn’t go very far, so Brian took another piece and folded another airplane and threw it. This airplane went a little farther. Brian kept folding different kinds of airplanes and throwing them. Some went very far and some did not. Finally, when Brian had used all the paper, he walked up to the airplane that had flown the farthest and picked it up.

4 . A study led by The University of Edinburgh researchers found that the performance of runners who listened to self-selected music as they ran after completing a demanding thinking task was at the same level as when they were not mentally tired. The findings of the study were published in the Journal of Human Sport and Exercise.

Researchers used two tests to study how listening to music affected the running performance of fitness enthusiasts. One test looked at the effects on the interval running ability—alternating between high intensity (强度) running and lower intensity jogging—with a group of nine exercisers, and the other on a 5 km time trial with a group of nine trained runners. The groups completed a 30-minute computer-based cognitive (认知的) test which put them in a mentally worn state before completing high intensity exercise. They were tested with and without motivational music which they selected.

Taking into account the results of a baseline test taken by participants that they did without completing a mentally demanding test beforehand and without music, the researchers found the interval running ability of the mentally worn fitness enthusiasts was slightly greater with music compared to that without music, and was the same as when the participants were not mentally tired. The 5 km time trial performance also showed small improvements with self-selected music compared to no music.

Dr. Shaun Phillips, of The University of Edinburgh’s Moray House School of Education and Sport, said, “Feeling tired mentally is a common occurrence for many of us, and can negatively affect many of our daily activities, including exercise. Finding safe and effective ways to reduce this negative impact is therefore useful. The research showing that listening to self-selected motivational music can help active people improve their endurance (耐力) running ability and performance when mentally worn out may provide a useful strategy.”

1. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the study?
A.Its purpose.B.Its principle.C.Its process.D.Its participants.
2. Why did the researchers consider the baseline test?
A.To prove that their finding is useful.
B.To offer evidence to support their study.
C.To make a comparison with their test results.
D.To find links between music and mental health.
3. What is Dr. Shaun Phillips’ attitude towards the research?
A.Approving.B.Tolerant.C.Critical.D.Carefree.
4. Which of the following can serve as the best title?
A.Being Mentally Tired Is a Common Feeling
B.Listening to Music Benefits Mental Health
C.Exercise Regularly Improves Mental Condition
D.Running to Music Reduces Mental Tiredness

7 . A 99-year old Australian swimmer appears to have broken a world record for his age group in the 50 m freestyle. The likely new world record holder, George Corones, clocked 56.12 seconds at an official event in Queensland—a new benchmark for the 100-104 age category. He faded the previous record of 1:31. 19, which was set by British swimmer John Harrison in 2014, by 35 seconds. It will now be affirmed by the sport’s governing body.

Corones, who is quailed for the record because he turns 100 in April, said he was “quite delighted” and “over the world” by the result. He said he had been overwhelmed by the “roaring” crowd on the Gold Coast on Wednesday. The event, in which he was the only entrant (新成员), had been specially staged for him to challenge the record.

Corones was a keen swimmer in his youth but only began to learn swimming again at the age of 80. He gave it up at the beginning of the World War Ⅱ, and he didn’t think he would have a swim of any description until he retired. Then he started swimming again for exercise.

Racing undeniably (不可否认的) challenged him physically, but it was manageable with preparation. On average he swims three times a week, and also fits in gym sessions. “At this age it takes a while to get going... you get exhausted much more easily, but if you do it properly, the rewards are astronomical,” he said.

Corones will challenge the 100 m freestyle record on Saturday night, believing he can beat the current mark of 03:23.10, which was also set by Harrison.

“I’m not a young man by any means, but I am rally looking forward to it and confident I can do it very well,” he said.

1. What is the author’s purpose of writing paragraph 1?
A.To show who John Harrison is.B.To introduce the topic of the text.
C.To emphasize the importance of age.D.To explain the reason for writing the text.
2. What does the underlined word “astronomical” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Original.B.Huge.C.Brief.D.Precise.
3. What does Corones plan to do next?
A.Challenge Harrison again.B.Prepare for his 100th birthday party.
C.Celebrate his success.D.Challenge the 100 m backstroke.
4. What does the author tell us by telling Corones’s story?
A.It’s never too late to learn.B.He who laughs last laughs best.
C.One good turn deserves another.D.Laziness in youth spells regret in old age.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了让健身计划顺利进行的技巧。

8 . It’s easy to talk yourself out of exercising. Even when you have the best intentions to work out, excuses are so easy to find — “I’m too tired”, “I’m busy” or “The weather is bad”. Don’t worry!     1

※ Take baby steps.

You’ll never try to run 10 miles just in a single day, right? When you do too much too soon, you’ll end up injured and discouraged. Take it easy as you get stated. Maybe you only run a quarter of a mile during your first week.     2

※ Show the clock who is boss.

Health experts say that you should aim for at least 150 minutes of exercise a week, plus weight training at least twice a week. If you work too late to get to a gym, keep a set of weights at home. If you can’t do 30 minutes at once, break it up into 10 or 15 minutes’ sections.

    3

Your workout should be just as much a habit as brushing your teeth or eating breakfast. When it’s part of your routine, you won’t even have to think about it. In a few months, fitness can be regular in your day.

※ Keep it real.

You’re not going to shake off 30 pounds in a week.     4     Gradually, you should increase your workout schedule from 2 to 3 days a week, or exercise for 15more minutes each time.

※Celebrate.

It takes weeks to see real changes. Therefore, even a pound of weight loss or a pound of muscle gain is the reason to reward yourself.

    5

A.Do it for yourself.
B.Try to get used to it.
C.Go out with friends or buy a pair of jeans.
D.Keep a fitness journal to record your progress.
E.Aim for something that is realistic as a first step.
F.The following tricks can keep your fitness routine on track.
G.When it gets easy for you, you’ll surely make it more challenging.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述体育运动可以帮助你的学习和适应社会,介绍了参加体育运动的好处。

9 . Playing sports offers you more than just physical benefits (好处).     1     The benefits are the same whether or not you’re good at sports. If you are not good enough to play competitively on a school team, you can play sports with your friends.

Making new friends.

Playing sports enables you to create friendships you otherwise might not have formed.     2     You play together happily and gradually know each other. Many times, the friendships you create on the field remain strong when you are not playing sports.

Understanding the value of health.

Taking part in sports improves your health in many ways.     3     This gets you thinking about what to eat and how to treat your body so as to achieve the highest performance levels. Thus, playing sports can lead to better eating habits and prevent you from becoming too fat.

Building team spirit.

Sports provide children with the important lesson of learning how to work in a team.     4     By working together they will learn each other’s strengths and weaknesses and will be better able to decide and work out the best plan for the team. This will without doubt help them in their future lives and jobs as well.

    5

Playing sports requires a lot of time and energy. Some may think this would take students’ attention away from schoolwork. However, the opposite is true. Sports require memorization, repetition and learning — skills that are directly relevant (有关的) to schoolwork.

A.Doing better in your studies.
B.Everyone has to work together to achieve the goal.
C.To be a good athlete, you must take care of yourself.
D.Sports can help you in your study and fit in with society as well.
E.Sports bring teens together from different schools and backgrounds.

10 . Football is, I suppose, the most popular game in England: one has only to go to one of the important matches to see this. Rich and poor, young and old, one can see them all there, shouting and cheering for one side or the other.

One of the most surprising things about football in England to a stranger is the great knowledge of the game which even the smallest boy seems to have. He can tell you the names of the players in most of the important teams. He has photographs of them and knows the results of a large number of matches. He will tell you who he expects will win , and his opinion is usually as valuable as that of men three or four times his age.

Most schools in England take football seriously — much more seriously than nearly all European schools, where lessons are all-important, and games are left for private arrangements. In England, it is believed that education is not only a matter of filling a boy’s mind with facts in a classroom education also means character training. One of the best ways of training character is by means of games, especially team games, where the boy has to learn to work with others for his team, instead of working selfishly for himself alone. The school therefore arranges games and matches for its pupils. Football is a good team game, it is good exercise for the body, it needs skill and a quick brain, it is popular and it is cheap. As a result, it is the school's favorite game in the winter.

1. In England football is a game enjoyed________.
A.only by young peopleB.by people of all ages and classes
C.only by boysD.only by rich people
2. A stranger in England will be surprised to find that in that country________.
A.people have little knowledge of footballB.even small boys know a lot about football
C.girls are more interested in football than boysD.children are not interested in football at all
3. There is a great difference between schools in England and those in Europe in that________.
A.European schools take football seriously
B.schools in England care little about lessons
C.European schools often arrange football matches for their pupils
D.schools in England believe character training to be part of education
4. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true of the football game?
A.It is not expensive.B.It needs teamwork.
C.It makes people selfish.D.it is good exercise for the body
