1 . Football, to me, is more than just a game. I have probably learned more valuable lessons from it than from school.

When I joined the team freshman year, I didn’t realize what I was getting into. Even though I had been playing since fourth grade and knew it was hard work, nothing would prepare me for the effort I would put into football that year. We worked all summer in the weight room and ran on the track to get in physical and mental shape before the season.

See, football is more of a mental sport than anything else, so running on the track wasn’t only about getting in shape. We would push our minds by running as hard as we could even if we were going to pass out. At the beginning, I was immature and only thought of myself, sometimes even gave up when I was tired or hurt. Then after the third game I had a season-ending injury. Imagine working all summer and then only being able to play three games! I needed surgery on my arm and at least five months to recover.

Needless to say, I missed the rest of the season, but this actually helped me realize that since you never know when your last play will be, you should try your hardest in football and life.

After freshman year I decided that I would always give my best effort. Playing varsity football has taught me so much more than just what my assignments are on a particular play or how to block. I have learned to think about others first and realized how important working hard is. Being with all my friends, even sweating and bleeding with them, really made us bond as a group of hard-working young men who I know will succeed in life.

2 . Breakdancing may make its debut (首次亮相) as an Olympic sport at Paris 2024, Tony Estanguet, head of the Paris 2024 organizing committee, said on February 21. Skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing which have already been added to Tokyo 2020, have been invited to return in Paris.

Estanguet said the choices responded to a need to make the Olympics “more urban” and “more artistic”. “We have chosen to present the International Olympic Committee (IOC) with the four sports because they are creative, appealing to youth and completely in line with our vision. They reflect perfectly Paris 2024's identity.”

Breakdancing is an example of a sport “which can be played anywhere and anytime in urban and other environments”. It appeared at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in the form of headtohead “battles”. In competitive breakdancing, “breakers” face off in “battles” against each other, either as individuals or teams. Breakdancers use a mix of physical and artistic skills combining elements from gymnastics or acrobatics (杂技).

The IOC had announced that the number of competitors at Paris 2024 would be restricted to 10,500, which limited the opportunity to add sports. But the organizers said the inclusion would not need the construction of facilities(设施) and would involve just 248 competitors, including 32 breakdancers. The surfing events are likely to be held in established surf centers such as Biarritz or Lacanau in southwest France.

The inclusion still needs to be rubberstamped by the IOC, which is expected to decide on which sports to add in Paris 2024 after Tokyo 2020.

1. What do we know about breakdancing?
A.It involves multiple skills.B.It's limited to group competition.
C.It will show up in Paris 2024.D.It never appeared in the world events.
2. Paris 2024 organizers have chosen the four sports because they ________.
A.attract young peopleB.perfectly reflect Paris' identity
C.make Paris more urban and artisticD.can be played anytime and anywhere
3. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A.10,500 competitors will compete for the new sports.
B.More surf centers will be specially designed for Paris 2024.
C.The IOC will reject the proposal because of inadequate facilities.
D.The inclusion won't require additional competition space to be built.
4. Which is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “rubberstamped” in the last paragraph?
A.Recognized.B.Canceled.C.Refused.D.Designed.

3 . At the Daytona 500 in Daytona Beach, Florida, on Sunday, tensions ran high between the drivers, all anxious to start the NASCAR(全国汽车比赛协会)season with a good race. Tony Stewart in particular seemed to want to have an impressive finish and went to some lengths to achieve it, including getting extremely close to some other cars.

Stewart's first had a run in with Matt Kenseth. Stewart made an aggressive move, which sent Kenseth unable to finish the Daytona 500. However, Stewart simply received an aggressive driving punishment from NASCAR officials.

Stewart, who had been promoting safer driving all week leading up to the race according to the Associated Press, also had a run in with Kyle Busch. Busch and Stewart had a run in which resulted in Stewart crossing over the yellow out-of-bounds line. Stewart was not punished because officials decided it was Busch's fault.

Adding to the excitement of this opening race for the NASCAR season, Stewart also had a run in with Jeff Gordon's car. On lap 47 the two were going around a tight spot, both trying to beat the other one out for the lead when Stewart tapped Gordon's car. Both cars grazed the wall, although there was minimal damage and both were able to continue on. Gordon told reporters that he believes this incident was the fault of both himself and Stewart.

Maybe it is a coincidence that Stewart was involved in all of these run-ins or maybe he was really just determined to finish well in this race — no one knows for sure. But Stewart finished 5 th in this race while the other people he had a run in with did not place in the top five.

1. What can we infer from the passage?
A.Stewart wished others to win the race.
B.Kenseth would win the race without Stewart.
C.Stewart should have been punished more seriously.
D.Stewart got close to other cars to help them. ,
2. Why wasn't Steward punished when his car crossed over the yellow line?
A.Because he thought it was Busch's fault.
B.Because he had been driving safely all week.
C.Because Bush hit his car on purpose.
D.Because officials thought he didn't break the law.
3. What's the main idea of Paragraph 4 ?
A.Stewart's good luck.
B.Stewat's run in with Jeff Gordon's car.
C.The fault of the run in with Jeff Gordon's car.
D.Stewart's and Gordon's cars were both damaged.
4. Which word best describes Stewart as a race driver?

4 . Many campuses have intramural (校内的) sports teams — teams that aren’t as competitive as other sports teams on campus.    1    But you can benefit greatly by taking part in intramural sports.

Intramural sport are an amazing stress reliever.

You’ll have no shortage of stress in college: exams, group projects, computer problems, etc.     2     Intramural competitions have a set schedule, so you’re practically forced to set aside time to run around with your friends. A little friendly competition will be a nice change of pace from the classroom.

    3

While most students would like to go to the gym regularly, few actually do. With a predetermined time already in your schedule, your workout is more likely to happen. In addition, you’ll be more excited when you work out in a team. Thus you won’t want to cut the gym session short. Team sports are a great way to push you.

They’re a great way to meet people.

You may be getting used to seeing people of the same major. Intramural sports teams can be a great way to meet students you may not otherwise run into. In fact, you don’t necessarily need to know anyone to join an intramural team.     4

It’s one of the few things you’ll do just for fun.

Many things you do in college have specific goals and purposes.     5     But you don’t need to assign a purpose to intramural sports. After all, you’re not making a profession out of it.

A.They provide great exercise.
B.Having purposes is possible.
C.And singing up can quickly expand your social circle.
D.They improve sports skills.
E.Joining an intramural team can take lots of time and energy.
F.For example, you work to pay for your school fee.
G.Thus it can be hard to fit fun into your busy life.

5 . It's the start of a new year, when your fitness goals are set and you engage in the challenge.     1     Their standards of “too big” are not even achievable in their lifetime, let alone a few months of training, which brings my tips.

Set realistic goals! The process of building muscle is an absolutely slow one that requires strong will to gain. Consistently causing protein synthesis (合成)in specific muscle fibers will allow muscle to develop. However, all individuals are not equal in the process.    2     Gaining muscle will happen quickly to a new gym-goer, but take a long time for someone that has been training for years.

Stick to specific training for the goals you set to achieve.     3    This will require you to restrict the diet, and it will prevent you gaining muscle. Diet reflects the training load. The training reflects your goals. It's like swimming upstream, think strong, fast and flexible. If you are running a marathon, the goals are different and train accordingly!

4     Fat has taken some time to develop, so it will not be lost overnight. Allow the hormonal triggers (生理诱因)in the body to work more efficiently to regulate volume of food. Taking out additional sugars is one of the most important steps to regulate volumes of food to switch off desire for food.

Once a goal is reached, do not go back to what you did before. When people finish their transformation, the hormone profile is very weak to fat deposition (沉积)。Every training session should be a step toward a lasting transformation, with a diet improving the level of exercise.     5

A.Don't try to achieve too much at once.
B.Why do so few people see their goals through?
C.Give yourself a realistic timeline when it comes to fat loss.
D.Keeping running slowly leads to very big changes over time.
E.Appreciate that you are taking time for your own development.
F.Place restrictions on your diet and follow good food eating patterns.
G.Also, it depends on how long you have been training to achieve muscle growth.

6 . This is Ella Stevens who, at just 13 years old, is fighting for a chance to drive for the most famous team in Formula One-Ferrari(法拉利一级方程式赛车).

This fall Stevens faces a series of challenges, on and off track at the Paul Ricard circuit in France, with the ultimate prize a place on the famous Ferrari Driver Academy as its first female racer. “It’s a very good opportunity for me,” Ella, already a British karting champion, tells CNN. “We have to do a few fitness tests in the first phase so that they can see our driving.”

The Academy is, in fact, a breeding ground for future racing stars. Its current crop includes Mick Schumacher, the son of legendary Ferrari driver Michael, Enzo Fittipaldi, whose grandfather Emerson was a double F1 world champion, as well as Arthur Leclerc, the younger brother of Ferrari’s current FI racer Charles.

On the face of it, it’s no place for a 13-year-old girl from a small village in England—who already has a mountain to climb as a female in a sport still dominated by males. After all, a female has not raced in Fl for more than 40 years, and just six women have taken part in a grand prix(大奖赛)weekend.

But Stevens is being supported by a popular figure in the F1 community, Rob Smediey. He worked as a Ferrari engineer for more than a decade and is now teaching Stevens through his own Electroheads Talent Academy.

Smediey describes Ferrari’s search for a potential female racer as a “huge step”. “Having a major player in the sport, with such a rich history as Ferrari, leading on this has to be applauded”, he tells CNN. “It’s absolutely amazing that they want to do this and they’re taking positive action to increase the gender diversity within the sport.”

1. What will Ella win after fighting off a series of challenges?
A.She’ll become a karting champion.
B.She’ll have to pass a few fitness tests.
C.She’ll drive for Formula One-Ferrari.
D.She’ll become the first female racing champion.
2. Why is Mick Schumacher mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A.To make people believe he’s a famous racer.
B.To show how he became a F1 world champion.
C.To introduce that he was once a double FI world champion.
D.To prove Ferrari Driver Academy is home to the promising racers.
3. The underlined word “dominated” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to
A.wonB.placedC.ruledD.grasped
4. What’s the best title of the text?
A.Ella Stevens: the first female racer
B.Ella Stevens: a promising racing star
C.Formula One-Ferrari: the world top race
D.Formula One-Ferrari: a race without female

7 . You can run pretty much anywhere, with pretty much no equipment. So it must be easy to start-just put one foot in front of the other, right?

Not quite.

Starting a new training program, like most things, is stepping into unfamiliar area.     1     . Most people start out too hard, which leads to unnecessary tiredness and possible injury; or they just bum out,   feeling that the last thing they want to do is go out for another heavy,   painful run. Getting past that early period is the key to both running's benefits and pleasures.

2     You may want to start running to make your heart stronger, to up your endurance for other sports, or even just to fit into your tux(晚礼服,)again. Those are all worthy goals and setting them is a valuable aid to getting where you want to go.

If you like a challenge, your goal might be running the local 5K, or something more ambitious, like finishing a Tough Mudder obstacle run or qualifying for the Boston Marathon. A typical beginner who trains properly—without overdoing it — can safely finish a 5K after about three months.     3

Whatever you decide to aim for, committing to it will help your progress greatly.     4     . While a short,   easy run a few times a week is better than nothing,   it's not nearly as exciting as looking up at — then reaching — the next level.

Then don't get ahead of yourself.     5     . And gradually you can become a good run beginner.

A.Figure out why you're running.
B.The new training program will pay off.
C.And it is possible for a marathon after a year.
D.Otherwise you tend to make no further progress.
E.That is a remarkable achievement for a run beginner.
F.You should resist the urge to run too hard, too much, or too often.
G.You're eager but unsure, excited but potentially easy to make errors.

8 . Swimming in water temperatures of 41 degrees F and below with air temperatures between 6.8 degrees F and 4 degrees F, wearing just a swimsuit, a cap, and a pair of glasses may sound foolish to some. But that is precisely what 400 athletes from 33 countries had to bear in the International Swimming Championships held in Murmansk, Russia.

Organized by the International Ice Swimming Association (IISA), the event was held in a 25-meter-long swimming pool created by carving out slabs (平板) of the 2 foot thick surface layer of ice on Lake Semyonovakaya with chain saws (锯子).

Each event also has a strict time limit. Due to the danger of the low body temperature, competitors who are in the water must be pulled out in time. Swimmers do not dive in. Instead, they go into the water slowly using ladders. They must also stay flat in the water at all times and are forbidden to perform turns which could endanger the organs. Upon completing their race, swimmers are quickly led to a recovery center. Once their body temperature stabilizes, they settle down for a hot bath.

Jony Warneken said, “There are three reasons why a lot of us do this. There’s the physical challenge of actually swimming in water that is below five degrees. We love being out in nature. And the third thing is that the friendship among the swimmers is fantastic.”

Jade Perry said, “It’s fantastic when I get in the cold water — I’m just free. The most important is that I’m not worrying about work, my house, or anything like that in my life. I’m in the water and I’m just thinking about swimming.”

Ice swimming is enjoyed by a few brave souls. However, Ram Barkai, the founder of IISA, is trying to convince Chinese officials to include it as a competitive event in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China. While he even persuaded the decision makers to come to the Murmansk Championships, there is no word yet on if he met with any success.

1. What do we know about the swimming pool?
A.It is 2 feet wide.B.It lies in an ice lake.
C.It is as deep as 25 meters.D.It serves as a recovery place for patients.
2. What should swimmers do in the competition?
A.Make some turns in the water.
B.Finish swimming at a fixed period of time.
C.Dive into the water as quickly as possible.
D.Find a chance to get out of the water for a hot bath.
3. What’s the main point of ice swimming for Jade Perry?
A.The challenge of the physical body.B.The happiness of conquering nature.
C.The joy of escaping from the reality.D.The friendship with other swimmers.
4. What is Ram Barkai trying to do?
A.Invite some brave swimmers to Murmansk.
B.Make swimming become a more competitive sport.
C.Persuade Chinese swimmers to join the competition.
D.Have ice swimming included in the Winter Olympics.

9 . It’s not often an athlete receives a personal best and then leaves the track with a sense of disappointment. But after Karsten Warholm ran the second-fastest 400m hurdles (跨栏) in history earlier this year, the man couldn’t help but think what could have been.

The 24-year-old dragged his trailing (落后) leg on the final hurdle in Stockholm in August to finish in a world-leading 46.87 seconds—0.09 seconds shy of Kevin Young’s world record, a mark he has moved ever closer to throughout his career.Young’s world record, set at the Barcelona Olympics, has stood for 28 years, the longest-standing record in men’s track running.

“Being really happy and really disappointed at the same time—it’s a strange feeling,” Warholm says as he reflects on his season.“I was really, really happy of course with the race in itself. But stumbling (绊倒) into the last hurdle and just looking at the time, knowing that most likely I spoiled my chance of a world record right there.I think I’ve never felt that way before.”

Young recently said he feels it’s “about time” his record is broken, and a glance at the all-time list suggests he might not have to wait much longer.Warholm has run four of the 10 fastest times in the event’s history, while his two closest competitors, Rai Benjamin and Abderrahmane Samba, make up the only other athletes to ever run under 47 seconds.

Between those three, the race for the world record is very much on.“This is going to be really, really tough competition,” says Warholm, who took the world title last year.“I think in 400m hurdles we are in for a real treat because everybody wants this right now.I think it’s going to be like the moon race between the United States and Russia – it’s going to be crazy.”

It will take more big leaps than small steps to win in hurdles’ version of the Space Race, but as with any contest—athletic or cosmic (宇宙的)—it is competition that helps boost progress.“It’s really important to have competition, somebody pushing you and somebody keeping you on your toes, I really like that,” Warholm adds.“I’m thankful for my competitors – even though I want to beat them, of course.”

1. What can be inferred form paragraph 2?
A.Warholm felt too shy to meet Kevin Young.
B.Kevin set a world record of 46.87 seconds in hurdling.
C.Warholm failed the race totally because of his injured leg.
D.Warholm’s race fell 0.09 seconds short of Kevin’s record.
2. Why, after the race, did Warholm feel happy and disappointed at the same time?
A.Having mixed feelings is usual for athletes.
B.Being second in the race made him cheerful.
C.The race made him happy but not setting the record discouraged him.
D.The race strengthened his determination to outperform himself and others.
3. Why “Rai Benjamin” and “Abderrahmane” Samba were mentioned in paragraph 4?
A.To show the competition was very tough.
B.To show their great achievement.
C.To show people’s admiration to them.
D.To show nobody could do better than them.
4. In Warholm’s opinion, __________.
A.competition and progress cannot coexist.
B.the competition made athletes do mad things
C.athletes need to sacrifice everything to win the race
D.the hurdle race is as competitive as the moon race

10 . In the past 70 years, physical activity in America has transformed from a necessity of daily life into an often-expensive leisure(闲暇)activity, and has reformed itself as the basis of people's social position."In the 1950s and 1960s, the body became a problem, and exercise developed — it had to develop-because people realized that we were all going to die of heart attacks," Shelly McKenzie, the author of Getting Physical: The Rise of Fitness Culture in America, told me.

With new middle-class needs coming into new marketing, Jack LaLanne!s instructional exercise TV show introduced much of the country to the active pursuit of physical fitness in 1951, paving the way for workout tapes from fitness superstars such as Richard Simmons and Jane Fonda. In the 1970s, exercise began to leave the home, both through the popularization of jogging and weightlifting and in more organized ways, such as Jazzercise classes.

No matter how they package it, these businesses aren't just selling physical activity; they're providing people with a way to stick to expectations that the industry itself helped set."Exercise, and especially public exercise, came to indicate mental, emotional, and even spiritual health and virtue," Marc Stern wrote in 2008," In return for the effort, gym-goers attain(获得)the type of body that proves their virtue to all who see them.”

That these physical standards are difficult to achieve is the point."We live in a culture in which being diligent is highly, highly praised," Petrzela, the New School professor, who is working on a book about fitness's place in American culture, told me.

“Many people want to be regarded as people who value exercise, because it shows they're committed to(致力于)self-improvement, and to hard work."Above and beyond movement itself, part of the satisfaction of gym-going comes from performing those values around other people who share them, and from achieving what that community regards as success.

1. Why did exercise develop in the 1950s and 1960s?
A.Because exercise was a necessity of daily life.
B.Because people realized the importance of body health.
C.Because exercise was an often-expensive leisure activity.
D.Because people regarded exercise as the foundation of people's social position.
2. Why do many people like going to gym according to Marc Stern?
A.To keep healthy.B.To gain good body shape.
C.To show their good character.D.To prove their social position.
3. What do NOT make people gain satisfaction from going to the gym?
A.Seeing some superstars in the gym.
B.The same values around other people.
C.Achieving success defined by that group of people.
D.Being regarded as people who're committed to self-improvement.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.How to keep healthy.
B.Why American people want to gain virtue.
C.Why physical activity developed in America.
D.How physical activity developed in America.
