“Number 7, Jobie Nymble, takes the lead,” cried the announcer. “Just one more hurdle and…”Cheers erupted.
“Jobie Nymble from Riverside Middle School takes first place in the girl's 100-meter hurdles!”
“County championships, here we come,” screamed Jobie, patting her worn neon-green track shoes. They were bursting at the seams, but she didn't care. They were her lucky shoes and she loved them. “Next Saturday, we're taking home the gold,” Jobie whispered to her lucky track shoes, excitedly retying them. Pop! She sighed as she stared at the broken-off piece of shoelaces dangling between her fingers.
“Don't forget, guys,” chirped Marisol, one of her teammates. “My birthday party is next Friday at Hidden Park.”
“Beep. Party recorded in calendar,” joked Jobie in her best robot voice.
Next weekend couldn't come soon enough. Jobie was excited all week long. At track practice, she leaped over those hurdles faster than she'd ever leaped before.
The day of Marisol's party, Jobie put on her favorite outfit and her lucky track shoes. "Perfect." She smiled at herself in the mirror.
The party was in full swing when Jobie arrived. She saw two of her teammates rushing toward her, breathless and barefoot. “Come on,” they said excitedly, “You have to try the slide”. “Slide? What sli…” Suddenly, she saw it. The BIGGEST inflatable slide she had ever seen was on the far side of the park. Without thinking twice, Jobie threw aside her shoes and run toward the slide. Its ladder stretched to the sky but she reached the top in no time. She slid down, and closed her eyes as she let go. “Woo-hoo!”
Jobie couldn't get enough. When it was finally time to go home, she reluctantly made her way back to the track where she'd left her shoes. As she eyed the area from a distance, panic set in.

The Office for National Youth Campus Football said that China already had 13, 381“special football schools” in 2016, and that 69 counties were piloting programs for football in schools.
Aimed at training young players and developing their talent, the government's latest plan is to advance China's ability to compete globally. The office predicts the number of football schools will have increased to 50, 000 by 2025.
Wang Dengfeng, director of the Physical Education, Health and Art Department under the Ministry of Education and Vice Chairman of the China Football Association, was quoted as saying that football experts are designing curriculum for more than 360 training programs in primary and secondary schools.
Xinhua reported that the MOE and five other central government departments were putting together a task force to ensure that football advances quickly in the country's schools.
President Xi Jinping is also a well-known football fan, who has repeatedly voiced his support for the sport's development in China.
Mike licked (舔) the last of the chocolate ice cream. It was almost time to leave. He jumped into the car with his parents and headed off to the Olympic-sized pool for the big swim meet. When his race came up, Mike was confident. He was strong and swift. Mike climbed out the pool, smiling. He had just won first place.
A week later, it was time for another swim meet. Like before, Mike decided to enjoy his favorite flavored ice cream before they left home. As Mike climbed out the pool, his teammates patted (拍) him on the back. He’d taken first place again in his race.
As it turned out, Mike decided to have some chocolate ice cream before every one of the next few swim meets that came up. He began to think of it as his lucky charm. After several months of being placed in the top positions of every race he swam, Mike was feeling unbeatable. And he wouldn’t admit it, but he was also starting to feel a little uncomfortable. All that ice cream was adding a few pounds to his athletic swimmer’s build.
It didn't take long after that for Mike to start coming in second place---and then third and then last place in his races. The lucky chocolate ice cream had lost its magic. On the day of his next swim meet, his mother sat down at the table with him. “Mike, I think we need to talk about this. We all love ice cream, but it’s got lots of fat and sugar in it, and it’s not healthy for your body to eat so much of it.” Mike unwillingly agreed. His father offered to go running with him few days a week to help strengthen his muscles. The extra weight soon disappeared, and Mike found himself breathing easier at swim.
It was the last meet of the season, and Mike wasn’t sure what to expect. He felt healthy again, but he didn’t know if he still had any speed in the pool.
