3 . Swimming in freezing water may sound hard to understand. But that's precisely what 400 athletes from 33 countries had to endure in the 3rd International Ice Swimming Championships held in Murmansk, Russia from March 14 to 17, 2019.
Unlike normal swim competitions, ice swimming doesn't suit everyone. The extreme sport can damage the heart. So even the most experienced athletes are carefully monitored and medically examined before and after they enter the water. Individual spotters are assigned to each participant to check for any issues as they swim. Each event also has a strict time limit after which competitors who are still in the water are pulled out.
As a rule, participants don't dive in. Instead, they dip themselves into the water slowly using adders, allowing the body to get gradually accustomed to the low temperature. Swimmers must also stay horizontal(水平的)in the water at all times and aren't allowed to perform flip turns(滚翻转身). That's because, in cold water, the warmer blood moves to the core(核心)of the body, protecting the organs from the extreme temperature. A flip turn could lead warm blood to move and endanger the organs.
Upon completing their race, swimmers are quickly led to a recovery center, where experts help them warm up by dipping their legs in cool water and covering their bodies with heated towels. Once their body temperature stabilizes, the swimmers settle down into a hot bathtub.
Despite risks, many ice swimming addicts still enjoy participating in ice swimming competitions. They like the physical challenge of actually swimming in freezing water and swimming distance. Besides, they love the feeling of being out in nature.

4 . All over the world people enjoy sports. Sports help to keep people healthy and happy, and to live longer. Many people like to watch others play games. They buy tickets or turn on their TVs to watch the games. Often they get very excited when “their” player or team wins.
Some sports are so interesting that people everywhere go in for them. Football, for example, has spread around the world. Swimming is popular in all countries near the sea or in those with many rivers. What fun it is to jump into a pool or lake, whether in China, Egypt or Italy! And think of people in cold countries. Think how many people love to skate or ski in Japan, Norway or Canada. Some sports or games go back thousands of years, like running or jumping. Chinese wushu, for example, has a very long history. But basketball and volleyball are rather new. They are about one hundred years old. People are inventing new sports or games all the time. Water-skiing is one of the newest in the family of sports.
People from different countries often become good friends after a game together. Sports help them to understand each other. One learns to fight hard but fight fair, to win without pride and to lose with grace.

7 . Table tennis may not seem a reasonable option for someone with no arms — but Ibrahim Hamadtou doesn't believe in limits. The 48-year-old Egyptian Paralympian breaks the barrier by holding the paddle (球拍) in his mouth and using his right foot to serve the ball.
Hamadtou, who lost his arms in a train accident at the age of ten, was drawn to table tennis after being challenged by a friend. "I was once watching a match between two of my friends," Hamadtou explains. "They disagreed on a point, When I counted the point in favor of one of them, the other player told me, 'Mind your own business as you will never be able to play.' It was that statement that fired me up to decide to play table tennis."
It took Hamadtou three years to master the sport. He says the biggest challenge was figuring out the best way to control his body. "I was trying first to use the bat under the arm, and I also tried using other things, which weren't working so well. Finally, I tried using my mouth. It took me nearly a year of practice to get used to holding the paddle with my mouth and making the serve. With practice and playing regularly, this skill was improved."
The Egyptian's incredible talent came to light in 2014 when he was awarded the best Arab Athlete of the year. He won a silver medal at the 2016 African Championships, qualified for his first Paralympics in 2016 at 43, and then again for the 2020 Tokyo Games at 48.

Allan, my husband, had recently moved up the tennis league's ladder(晋级赛)and would compete against someone at a similar skill level. "Do you know who your opponent is?” I asked him. My husband explained that although he knew his opponent's name, he had never met him. That's when I saw a young man—about twenty years old—at the other end of the reception area.
The young man had large muscular arms and a well-built body. He was using a skip rope at quite a fast pace; I thought he might be warming up for a tennis match. I smiled at my husband and said that might be his opponent. Allan gave me a frustrated(沮丧的)look on his face, remarking it was an unusual way to prepare for a tennis match, as he continued completing his usual warm-up routine.
The league coordinator(统筹者)called out my husband's name, and then she called the young man. I gave my husband a kind of smile that wives give their husbands when they are encouraging them. The coordinator gave them their court number. They introduced themselves to each other, shook hands, and headed off.
The young man was dressed in the latest trendy tennis clothes and looked great. With his muscular body, he could have easily be a star athlete. Allan was at least thirty years older, much less muscular, and dressed in an ordinary tennis shirt and untrendy tennis shorts. Allan's focus had always been on good tennis shoes, socks, and, of course, the tennis racket.
When they walked onto their court, the pre-game warm-up began The young man played with confidence. It was almost as if he was showing his ability. Allan closely observed his various strokes and powerful serves, while casually returning each shot. Then began the game.
