1 . I have always been creative since I was a little girl. My childhood was filled with arts, crafts and music, and every day was an exciting adventure of creation.

Somewhere along the way, however, I lost touch with my creative self. At 21, I landed a job at a big insurance firm out of my business degree. I would go to the office, sit at my desk and repeat the same work five days a week, 9 to 5. The days were long and tedious. Working this way for one year was painful enough, let alone a lifetime. Before long I decided to make a change.

One thing I had developed an interest in was sewing, so I took a sewing course at a community college. It was only a five-week course but it awakened my interest and got my confidence up.

As I dreamed bigger, I began looking into college courses for Fashion Design and three months later I signed up for a part-time design course. I attended classes two nights a week. Although exhausting, it gave me energy, enthusiasm and happiness.

As it became more evident that fashion was what I wanted to do full time, the reality of my day-to-day work at the insurance firm became harder. I felt bored. No energy, no motivation and zero fulfillment.

I knew I needed to make a big change. After struggling for quite a while, I made a tough decision— leaving my job and studying my design course full time. Two years later I got my diploma.

The last few years have been exciting because I have been following my heart to do what I love. Today I'm living a creative life as the designer of my own fashion brand.

2 . A Chicago woman, Karen Autenrieth, who lost her wedding band nearly 50 years ago was reunited with the ring just in time for Valentine’s Day.

The story began during the winter of 1973. “It was very cold and the snow piled up along the roads,” Karen told the Chicago Tribune. “I had to help each kid climb over the large piles to get into my grandparents' yard. My hands were cold---I didn't have gloves on---and my ring just flew into the snow.” Despite her best efforts, Karen was unable to find the ring.

In February, a Chicago man who lost his own wedding ring posted on Facebook asking if anyone had found it. In the comments section, Sarah Batka, a woman who lives in Autenrieth's grandparents' former home% said she had discovered a wedding ring eight years ago while gardening. It wasn't the man s ring» but it sparked a hunt for the rightful owner.

Two historians---Carol Flynn and Linda Lamberty from the Historical Society---set off to solve the mystery. They used every means to retrace the origin of the ring and finally drew a conclusion that a woman, Karen Autenrieth, whose grandparents had once lived in Batka’s home, was the possible owner.

“The woman was on Facebook. So I asked whether this ring was hers. ’’ Flynn wrote in the post. “She replied—it was hers!”

After connecting, Flynn mailed the ring to Autenrieth, who received the package on Valentine's Day. 44Holy Mary, I can t believe it. Karen told the Chicago Tribune. “Just think I get the ring back after almost 50 years!

3 . Last Sunday I made a visit to some new neighbors down the block. No specific in mind, just an opportunity to sit at the kitchen table, have some tea and chat. As I did so, it occurred to me how rare the Sunday visit has become.

When I was a kid in New Jersey of the 1960s, Sunday visits were routine (惯例). Most stores were closed, almost nobody worked, and the highways, as a result, were not so crowded as they have become today. My family normally traveled eight city blocks to the home of my grandmother, where adults would sit on the front porch and chat while we children played hide-and-seek.

The Sunday visit was something to desire strongly, because everyone seemed to be on the same schedule, which means that there was one day when everyone seemed to have time for everybody else.

Sunday as a day of rest is, or was, so deeply rooted in the culture that it’s surprising to find that, in a short span of time, it has almost entirely lost this association. In my childhood, it was assumed that everyone would either be home or visiting someone else’s home on Sunday. But now the question is, “What do you plan to do this Sunday?” The answer can range from going to the mall, to participating in a road race, to Montreal for lunch. If one were to respond, “I’m making a Sunday visit to family,” such an answer would feel strange, which seems like something from ages ago.

1. The writer’s general impression of the Sunday in the past was a day when________.
A.everyone seemed to be free for others
B.everyone was paying a visit to some relatives far away
C.adults would go to church and children weren’t at school
D.Dad was not at work while Mom was busy cleaning the house
2. In the fourth paragraph, the answer “I’m making a Sunday visit to family” seems strange because________.
A.visiting someone on Sunday was only a routine
B.people nowadays prefer staying at home on Sunday
C.such answers are hardly heard in our modern society
D.people in the city dislike being disturbed on Sunday
3. What is the writer’s attitude towards Sunday activities today?
A.Thankful.B.Confused.C.Respectful.D.Unsatisfied.

4 . As a high school student, I learned this the hard way last year, when a student I didn't expect to bested me on the math PSAT. He soon admitted the secret to his success: the CAS calculator. He made clear that the CAS was able to solve all of his SAT equations (方程式). He claimed all he needed was his knowledge of seventh-grade math and the calculator did the rest.

From experience, I know it isn't that simple. A fancy calculator that costs about $150 is not that useful if you don't understand what the question is asking. But it does feel like cheating. Aside from being financially out of reach of many students, CAS calculators have the potential to misrepresent math ability and problem-solving skills.

It's unfair to allow such an incredibly helpful advanced calculator unless every student has access to it. Especially when the test has the potential to affect a student's educational path. In response to an email asking whether the College Board, which owns the SAT, is aware that the CAS is seen as greatly helping those who use it and whether it has considered banning such calculators, a communications officer sent a link to the SAT calculator policy, which spells out the permitted calculators, CAS among them.

If all students had access to a better calculator, how many could improve their test scores enough to get into their dream school? How many students get into better schools because of this privilege hack? It isn't right and shouldn't stand.

The simplest solution would be to leave out the math section that allows calculator use or permit test-takers to use only the most basic calculators, provided by the College Board. The equation for fairness is simple: You know it when you see it, and this calculator inequity (不公) isn't it.

1. The example of a student doing better than the writer in the math PSAT is used to________.
A.introduce the topic
B.compare their math achievements
C.show the writer's envy
D.blame his cheating in the exam
2. Why did the writer feel it unfair for students to use CAS calculators?
A.Because every student can not use one in SAT.
B.Because he didn't use one as early as others.
C.Because his model was less powerful than others'.
D.Because the College Board didn't provide one to him.
3. What's the College Board's attitude towards banning the CAS calculators?
A.Favorable.
B.Disapproving.
C.Ambiguous.
D.Cautious.
4. What's the best title of the passage?
A.CAS calculators-cheating in SAT
B.Solution to stopping cheating in SAT
C.Calls on banning the calculators
D.Calls on using basic calculators

5 . Experts are warning about the risks of extremely picky(挑剔的)eating after a teenager living on a diet of chips and crisps developed lasting sight loss. Eye doctors in Bristol cared for the 17-year-old after his sight had gone to the point of blindness. Tests showed he had serious vitamin deficiency(缺乏). Dr. Denize Atan, who treated him at the hospital, said, “His diet was basically a portion of chips from the local fish and chip shop every day. He also used to snack on crisps and sometimes white bread and ham, and not really any fruit and vegetables.”

The teenager saw his doctor at the age of 14 because he had been feeling tired and unwell. At that time he suffered from vitamin B12 deficiency, but he did not stick with the treatment or improve his poor diet. Three years later, he was taken to the Bristol Eye Hospital because of progressive sight loss.

He was not overweight or underweight, but he had lost minerals from his bones, which was really quite shocking for a boy of his age. In terms of his sight loss, he met the standards of being blind. “He had blind spots right in the middle of his sight,” said Dr Denize Atan, “That means he can’t drive and would find it really arduous to read, watch TV or recognize faces.”

Dr Denize Atan said that parents should learn about the harm that can be caused by picky eating, and turn to experts for help. For those who are concerned , she advised, “It’s best not to be anxious about picky eating , and instead calmly introduce one or two new foods with every meal.” She said multivitamin tablets can supplement(补充) a diet, but cannot take the place of eating healthily. “It’s much better to take in vitamins through a varied and balanced diet,” she said, adding that too many certain vitamins , including vitamin A, can be harmful ,“so you don’t want to overdo it.”

1. What does Dr Denize Atan imply in paragraph 1?
A.The diet of the boy is not balanced.
B.Fruit and vegetables are rich in vitamins.
C.Picky eating is common among teenagers.
D.The cause of the boy’s disease is unknown.
2. Why did the boy go to see his doctor at the age of 14?
A.To improve his poor diet.
B.To get some help to lose weight.
C.To be treated for his discomfort.

6 . My daughter Elena got arthritis (关节炎) at age 2. Arthritis? That was an elderly person’s disease, I thought.

At first, she started experiencing redness in her knees. I took her into the doctor’s office and I was told it was growing pains. After another couple of weeks it got worse. One day she was not able to walk at all. I took her back into the doctor’s office and luckily there was a different doctor on duty and she recognized the symptoms (症状). She told me to see a specialist at the hospital.

We got to the hospital. Everything seemed to be blurry (模糊的) to me that day. I also had a nine-month-old baby girl and due to the nervousness I lost my milk. I would lie awake at night wondering if my little girl would end up in a wheelchair. We knew we would have to use strong drugs to keep her walking.

Like anyone, I feared what the strong drugs could do to my little girl. I spoke with lots of specialists. We decided it was the best treatment. It worked. Our little girl is symptom-free.

I still don’t sleep well though. A mother’s worry can take over your whole life. I’ve had to become a nurse overnight. Learning about different drugs, how to give needles (注射). On top of that, there are so many comments from friends. Some say that I should go the “natural way”. What does that even mean? Do you honestly think I would choose this for my child if it weren’t the best choice for her?

I can only hope my words can touch and help someone else going through this same thing right now. Know that you are not alone and there are others that feel your pain. Stay strong and try not to let this disease run your life.

7 . We’ve known that sitting for long periods of time every day has countless health consequences, like a higher risk of heart disease. But now a new study has found that sitting is also bad for your brain.

A study published last week, conducted by Dr. Prabha Siddarth at the University of California, showed that sedentary(久坐的) behavior is associated with reduced thickness of the medial temporal lobe(中颞叶), a brain area that is critical to learning and memory.

The researchers asked a group of 35 healthy people, ages 45 to 70, about their activity levels and the average number of hours each day spent sitting and then scanned their brains. They found that the subjects who reported sitting for longer periods had the thinnest medial temporal lobes. It means that the more time you spend in a chair the worse it is for your brain health, resulting in possible damage to learning and memory.

What is also interesting is that this study did not find a significant association between the level of physical activity and thickness of this brain area, suggesting that exercise, even severe exercise, may not be enough to protect you from the harmful effects of sitting.

It then surprisingly turned out that you don’t even have to move much to enhance cognition(认知); just standing will do the trick. For example, two groups of subjects were asked to complete a test while either sitting or standing. Participants are presented with conflicting stimuli(刺激) , like the word “green” in blue ink, and asked to name the color. Subjects thinking on their feet beat those who sat by a 32-milicond(毫秒) margin.

The cognitive effects of severe physical exercise are well known. But the possibility that standing more and sitting less improves brain health could lower the bar for everyone.

I know, this all runs counter to received ideas about deep thought, from our grade school teachers, who told us to sit down and focus, to Rodin’s famous “Thinker,” seated with chin on hand.

They were wrong. You can now all stand up.

1. What can we infer from Paragraphs 3 and 4?
A.Severe exercise can lessen the damage of sitting.
B.Severe exercise can greatly improve our brain health.
C.Sedentary behavior will possibly damage our brain.
D.Brain health has nothing to do with sedentary behavior.
2. What does the underlined word “margin” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Blank.B.Edge.
C.Decrease.D.Difference.
3. What is the received idea about deep thought?
A.Sitting more is good for our mental health.B.Sitting is better when we think.
C.Exercise more can improve our cognition.D.We should stand while thinking.

8 . I go to a gym in west London, always unwillingly. Exercise is too exhausting and boring. Always was. At school I made believe that I had headaches and parental notes too, to get out of PE classes and compulsory games. Now, twice a week, I dutifully get on cycling machines and other equipment and make myself work out for an hour. To get through the difficult hour, I people-watched: young and old, fit and unfit and Clayton Rose, one of the instructors.

Clayton is a personal trainer not only to body perfectionists, but to people who are mentally and physically disabled, the obese and hopeless. He treats them all the same. I have witnessed him listening keenly to a middle-aged working-class woman who goes on and on about her life, holidays, everything. Slim and attractive now, she was once so heavy that she was in a wheelchair. I have seen him calm down a young man with Tourette's syndrome(抽动症)and get him on a treadmill. I have also watched him pushing and coaching strong, cool men.

Clayton was shocked when I said I wanted to write about him. “Why? You know I'm not educated? I'm not clued up about politics and all that. Just an ordinary guy.”

He grew up in Twickenham, where his dad worked in a timber yard, his mum in an office. After college, the young man got into personal training and found his work. One of his best friends got seriously ill and was given months to live. Clayton put him on a program that kept him alive for almost five years: “I don't earn much, but I love my work; training and talking really helps people who don't have confidence, who are lonely, afraid, sick. Lots of people can't step into a gym. They need someone they can trust, someone who will be on their side.

The gym recently updated its equipment. The flashy new stuff confuses and upsets disabled customers. Me too. The private firm running these centers made decisions without considering these needs. Clayton is managing the chaos with grace and strength. Last week, when a young woman in a wheelchair started sobbing loudly, he calmed her down, restored her dignity, superhumanly contained his anger.

One of his colleagues thinks Clayton's “a legend”. He is, and doesn't know it—a rare thing in this age of extreme narcissism(自恋)and monetized(货币化) everything.

1. Why was I unwilling to go to a gym?
A.Because I suffered from headaches.
B.Because I had bad memories of PE classes.
C.Because I had to watch a large crowd exercising
D.Because I felt it tiring and no fun
2. How does Clayton Rose help people in the gym?
A.He brings out the best in them.B.He helps them with illness advice
C.He treats them differently.D.He focuses on body perfection.

9 . Dear Mr. Jones,

I expect you may be slightly surprised to receive a letter from someone living as near as your next-door neighbor, but I have to raise a subject that it will be easier for me to discuss in writing.

You may have noticed that I have a line of apple trees running alongside the fence that separates our two gardens. You may also have taken pleasure in the frequent sight of your two children sitting on your lawn directly by the fence. And you may also have noticed that my apple trees, so to speak, bend over the fence and seem to look down at your children with interest.

It is only natural that your children should sometimes seem to return that interest. And it is not only natural, but, I acknowledge, quite legal, for them occasionally to show that interest by picking all the apples that hang over on your side of the fence.

But to be plain with you, Mr. Jones, I am tired of seeing your children, day after day, tear the branches off the side of every one of my apple trees, and leave my trees looking as though a battle had been fought on one side of them. I am, if anything, even more tired of waking up these fine autumn mornings, to find even the apples on my side of the fence much less in number. I know this is the work of your children, since last night I was woken up midnight by the noise they were making climbing one of my trees, and (as they may have told you) chased them home.

While I am on the subject, I am at least grateful to you for keeping your bonfire on the far side of your garden this year. Last year neither I nor your children had any apples, because the smoke from your bonfire destroyed all the flowers before the apples had time to form. I very much hope that next year—for the first time since I came to this village—I shall have my apples, and your children will have theirs and that the sight of the line of apple trees will be a pride to us both.

Otherwise, I shall not express my displeasure simply in writing to you, but shall have to refer the matter to those capable of taking stronger action.

Yours sincerely,

J. Smith

A.To make an apology.B.To express his displeasure.

D.He is concerned about the children’s disappointing behavior.
3. What do you know about J. Smith from the way he tries to solve the problem?

10 . We all feel anxious from time to time. For many, these uncertain times are a contributor to stress and concern. Anxiety is a normal reaction to a stressful situation, but if feelings of anxiety last a long time or keep returning, you might be experiencing an anxiety disorder.

Dave Smithson from Anxiety UK explains that there are three different aspects of anxiety: physical (how you feel), psychological (what you think), and behavioral (what you do). ” Physical symptoms include an increased heart rate or muscle tension, breathing heavily or dizziness. Psychological symptoms include feelings that you might lose control, faint or think people are looking at you and noticing your anxiety. Behavioral aspects include avoiding the situation that makes you feel anxious. “Those who are usually outgoing may become withdrawn, or those who are reserved may become erratic,” he says. “Everyone’s different, and anxiety can be caused by a range of things.”

Stephen Buckley, from mental health charity Mind, says talking to someone you trust can be helpful. If this isn’t possible, you could call a confidential helpline such as Mind’s Infoline, or those run by Anxiety UK and Samaritans.

Learning to relax through breathing exercises and other techniques can help manage anxiety. “Keeping a record of what started the anxiety and what helps it to pass, such as slowing your breathing or getting outdoors for a walk, can help you understand and spot patterns early on,” Stephen says. Relaxation techniques can include exercises to release tension in your body by relaxing your muscles. Drawing calming circles on paper with coloured pencils or pens is a way to distract you from worrying thoughts.

Other recommendations from Mind include connecting with other people. “This is a vital way of maintaining wellbeing” Stephen adds. “Have regular chats with friends and family over the phone. Talking to people in the same boat can be reassuring. Many people find it helpful to share ideas about how to stay well, connect with others and feel less alone.”

1. What symptom do people with an anxiety disorder have in common?
A.A strong tendency to avoid meeting people.B.A temporary decline in thinking ability.
C.A lasting feeling of tension and worry.D.A violent reaction to a tense situation.
2. How can people manage anxiety effectively according to Stephen?
A.By predicting conditions that may cause anxiety.B.By communicating with people they rely on.
C.By relieving tension through hard work.D.By maintaining their routine life.
3. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce the strategies of dealing with anxiety.B.To analyze the contributors to mental disorder.
C.To distinguish anxiety from anxiety disorder.D.To clarify different categories of anxiety.
