2 . To this day, I remember my mum's letters. It all started in December, 1941. Every night she wrote to my brother Johnny, who had joined the army that summer. We had not heard from him since the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.

I didn't understand why my mum kept writing to Johnny when he never wrote back.

"Wait and see—we'll get a letter from him one day,” she claimed.

Mum said that there was a direct link from the brain to the written word that was just as strong as the light God has given us. She trusted that this light would find Johnny.

I don't know if she said that to calm herself, dad or all of us down. But I do know that it helped us stick together, and one day a letter really did arrive. Johnny was alive on an island in the Pacific.

I had always been amused by the fact that mum signed her letters, Cecilia Capuzzi, and I made fun of her about that. “Why don't you just write “Mom”?” I said.

Around next spring mum had got two more sons to write to. Every evening she wrote three letters which she gave me and dad afterwards so we could add our greetings.

By and by, the rumor about mum's letters spread.

One day, a small woman knocked at our door. Her voice trembled as she asked: "Is it true you write letters?”

"I write to my sons."

“And you can read too?” whispered the woman.

“Sure.”

The woman opened her bag and pulled out a pile of airmail letters. Read...please read them aloud to me.

The letters were from the woman's son, a soldier in Europe.

Mum had no difficulty reading the letters one by one and translated them from English to Italian. The woman's eyes welled up with tears.

“"Now I have to write to him," she said. But how was she going to do it?

"Make some coffee, Octavia," mum yelled to me. She seated the woman and started to write. When she had finished, she read the letter aloud to the woman.

"How did you know that was exactly what I wanted to say?”

"I often say and look at my boys' letters, just like you, without a clue about what to write.”

A few days later, more and more people in our town asked mum to write letters for them. Sometimes she would write letters all day long. Even after the war, many people turned to mum. On one occasion, mum admitted that she had always had a secret dream of writing a novel.

“Why didn't you?” I asked.

“All people in this world are here with one particular purpose,” she said. “Obviously, mine is to write letters. A letter unites people like nothing else. It can make them cry and laugh.”

Today, all mum's letters are lost. But those who got them still talk about her and cherish the memory of her letters in their hearts.

5 . Species of all types have evolved over the centuries to be just the right height for their need.

So whether it's a giraffe or an elephant, these land animals stand just as tall as they need to.

No other land mammal (哺乳动物) has quite the view like the giraffe. Standing between 14 and 19 feet, giraffes are the tallest land mammal in the world. Their height is an advantage.

Because of the height, their good eyesight and strong kicks, giraffes aren't often brought down, even by lions. Still, giraffes face threats from humans for their skin and meat.

The ostrich (鸵鸟), a large flightless bird, is among the most recognizable of birds. Their long necks are matched by their long legs, and this gives them an average height of 6.6 feet. With their legs, they can reach up to 64km per hour. These birds have a reputation for sticking their heads in the sand, but in fact, they're digging holes to bury their eggs. From far away, it looks as if they're putting their heads in the sand. Now, most of their living areas have been taken up by man, which has greatly reduced their number.

Coming up behind the giraffe in the height competition is the African bush elephant. They weigh about 6,100 kilograms — they're even more difficult to be caught than giraffes. Lions try their best to catch younger elephants, but often with little success. Still, the species is considered endangered due to the loss of their homes.

Arabian camels are the tallest of the camel species. Males can reach about 6.6 feet. Despite their impressive size, Arabian camels disappear in the wild due to man's illegal hunting.

1. Why do ostriches dig holes in the sand?
A.To build homes.B.To cover their eggs.
C.To hide themselves.D.To bury their heads.
2. Which land animals are the second highest?
A.Giraffes.B.Ostriches.C.African bush elephants.D.Arabian camels.
3. What might be a common threat to these animals?
A.Human activities.B.Natural enemies.
C.Agricultural development.D.Lack of living areas.
4. What is mainly talked about in the text?
A.The right height for wild animals.B.Reasons for the height of animals.
C.The strongest mammals in the world.D.The tallest land animals on the earth.

6 . Planning a visit to the UK? Here we help with ways to cut your costs.

AVOID BIG EVENTS

Big sporting events, concerts and exhibitions can increase the cost of accommodation and make it harder to find a room. A standard double room at the Thistle Brighton on the final Friday of the Brighton Comedy Festival (19 Oct.) cost £169.15 at Booking.com. A week later, the same room cost £118.15.

If you can be flexible and want to know dates to avoid—or you’re looking for a big event to pass your time—check out sites such as Whatsonwhen.com, which allow you to search for events in the UK by city, date and category.

STAY AWAY FROM THE STATION

If traveling to your destination by train, you may want to find a good base close to the station, but you could end up paying more for the sake of convenience at the start of your holiday.

Don’t be too choosy about the part of town you stay in. Booking two months in advance, the cheapest room at Travelodge’s Central Euston hotel in London for Saturday 22 September was £95.95. A room just a tube journey away at its Covent Garden hotel was £75.75. And at Farringdon, a double room cost just £62.95.

LOOK AFTER YOURSELF

Really central hotels in cities such as London, Edinburgh and Cardiff can cost a fortune, especially at weekends and during big events. As an alternative, consider checking into a selfcatering flat with its own kitchen. Often these flats are hidden away on the top floors of city center buildings. A great example is the historic O’Neill Flat on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, available for £420 for five days in late September, with room for four adults.

GET ON A BIKE

London’s ‘Boris bikes’ have attracted the most attention, but other cities also have similar programs that let you rent a bicycle and explore at your own pace, saving you on public transport or car parking costs.

Among the smaller cities with their own programs are Newcastle (casual members pay around £1.50 for two hours) and Cardiff (free for up to 30 minutes, or £5 per day).

1. “Farringdon” in Paragraph 5 is most probably ________.
A.the tube line to Covent GardenB.a hotel away from the train station
C.the name of a travel agencyD.an ideal holiday destination
2. The passage shows that the O’Neill Flat ________.
A.lies on the ground floor
B.provides cooking tools for tourists
C.is located in central London
D.costs over £100 on average per day in late September
3. The main purpose of the passage is ________.
A.to offer visitors some moneysaving tips
B.to show visitors the importance of selfhelp
C.to supply visitors with hotel information
D.to tell visitors how to book in advance

7 . Isaac Newton is one of the greatest geniuses in history, though in his younger years, nobody would have guessed that he would grow up to become one of the world’s most brilliant minds.

He was born prematurely (早产) and quite small. He hated his step family. He went to a school that did not teach mathematics, and then later he was removed. His mother was widowed twice. She urged him to become a farmer, and he hated that too. He was a working student in college, doing odd jobs to pay for his education. And he graduated from Cambridge without honors.

He didn’t look outstanding at all, and neither was his story. But his mind saw more complex, and fascinating stories in the concepts of mathematics and physics. His plain life did not bother him at all.

Though he went through his Cambridge years with barely any honors, the inside of his study was found to have some of the most groundbreaking discoveries in physics and mathematics. He went on to discover many of his famous theories, including the generalized binomial theorem, power series, and infinite sums. He also observed the way light is refracted ( 折 射 ) by lenses and developed his own Newtonian telescope. Through his discovery of the Laws of Universal Gravitation and Laws of Motion, the field of physics was forever transformed.

If there was anything constant about the life of Isaac Newton, it wasn’t merely that his brain was large, but that it was continuously filled with wonder. Isaac Newton’s life was brilliant, not because of his wondrous adventures, but because he saw wonder in everything- from the minute details of mathematical philosophy, to how the world works. Truly, there is nothing boring or ordinary about a mind that seeks adventure in all things.

1. Which word can describe Issac Newton as a young man?

A.Newton’s life was full of adventures.
B.Nothing Is impossible to a willing heart.
C.A brain good at discovery is never boring.
D.Newton had a brain larger than any other’s.
4. What can be the best title of this text?

C.Interest Is the Best Secret of Success
D.Hard Work Makes up for Lack of Intelligence

9 . Madison Williams was studying in her bedroom when her mother, Leigh Williams, came in and shouted, “A little boy fell into a septic tank (化粪池)!” Then she asked her 13-year-old daughter if she could help.

Madison and Leigh ran to a neighbor’s yard, where they found the boy’s mad mother and other adults around the septic tank. Madison quickly examined the situation. She was the only one who could fit through the small hole. Without waiting a second, she got on her stomach next to the opening, placed her arms out in front of her, and told the adults, “Lower me in.”

Leigh and others held her waist and legs. Inside, the tank was dark, and the air was terrible. In the process, she stuck her left wrist (手腕) against a pole, hurting the muscles in her wrist and arm so seriously that the hand was useless. Rather than deal with her pain, Madison looked for the boy in the water with her eyes and right hand. Minutes went by before she saw his foot. Madison shot her right hand out and held the foot tightly. “Pull me up!” she shouted to the others above.

As they were pulled up, the boy’s free foot got stuck inside the hole. “Lower me down!” she shouted. Then, ten minutes after Madison had entered the tank, they were lifted out. But the boy wasn’t breathing for the lack of fresh air. He was placed on his side, and an adult gave him several hard hits on the back. It was only when Madison heard him cry that she knew he was all right.

1. How did Madison know what had happened?
A.She saw it herself.B.She heard a cry for help.
C.Her mother told her about it.D.Her mother asked her to help.
2. What drove Madison to save the little boy?
A.The boy’s cry of surprise.B.People’s call.
C.Her mother’s bravery.D.Her own willingness.
3. What happened to the little boy at last?
A.He was saved finally.B.He was drowned to death.
C.He wasn’t breathing.D.He was sent to hospital.
4. What is the passage mainly about?
A.A girl and her brave mother.B.A drowning boy in the water.
C.A boy falling into a septic tank.D.A girl voluntarily saving a little boy.

10 . Recently I spoke to some of my students about what they wanted to do after they graduated, and what kind of job prospects they thought they had.

Given that I teach students who are trained to be doctors, I was surprised to find that most students thought that they would not be able to get the jobs they wanted without “outside help”.“What kind of help is that?” I asked, expecting them to tell me that they would need a relative or family friend to help them out.

“Surgery (整形手术)”, one replied.I was pretty alarmed by that response. It seems that the graduates of today are increasingly willing to go under the knife to get ahead of others when it comes to getting a job.One girl told me that she was considering surgery to increase her height.“They break your legs, put in special extending screws, and slowly expand the gap between the two ends of the bone as it regrows. You can get at least 5 cm taller!”

At that point, I was shocked.I am short.I can’t deny that, but I don’t think I would put myself through months of pain just to be a few centimeters taller.I don’t even bother to wear shoes with thick soles, as I’m not trying to hide the fact that I am just not tall!

It seems to me that there is a trend toward wanting “perfection”, and that is an ideal that just does not exist in reality.

No one is born perfect, yet magazines, TV shows and movies present images of thin, tall, beautiful people as being the norm(标准).Advertisements for slimming aids, beauty treatments and cosmetic surgery clinics fill the pages of newspapers, further creating an idea that “perfection” is a requirement, and that it must be purchased, no matter what the cost.In my opinion, skills, rather than appearance, should determine how successful a person is in his chosen career.

1. We can know from the passage that the author works as ________.
A.a doctorB.a modelC.a teacherD.a reporter
2. Many graduates today turn to cosmetic surgery to ________.
A.marry a better man/womanB.become a model
C.get an advantage over others in job-huntingD.attract more admirers
3. What was the author’s reaction towards the girl’s decision?
A.Excited.B.Surprised.C.Happy.D.Angry.
4. According to the passage, the author believes that ________.
A.everyone should pursue perfection, whatever the cost
B.it’s right for graduates to ask for others to help them out in hunting for jobs
C.media are to blame for misleading young people in their seeking for surgery
D.it is one’s appearance instead of skills that really matters in one’s career
