You’ve finally thrown yourself into bed and opened a detective novel you’ve been waiting for all day. Three pages later, you’re fighting a losing battle against two suddenly very heavy eyelids. You     1     (be) wide awake a few minutes ago, and the hero just uncovered a promising new lead in the case. So, what is happening?

3 . How to feel more affection for 'very annoying' 14-year-old son

Hi Carolyn: I have two children who are both fundamentally good kids. But one is a very, very cute 10-year-old daughter and the other is a very, very annoying 14-vear-old son. One is cuddly and sweet and funny. The other is only rarely cuddly or sweet, funny but snarky (言辞尖刻的) and seems to adore one thing: contradicting every statement I make.

I know this is normal teenage behavior, but right now. I feel only annoyance toward him. And then I feel guilty, because I think he can sense the difference. What can I do?

–Annoyed

Hi Annoyed: As you know - and as you've sensed in his sensing the difference-he still needs you around and wants your approval. The surly (脾气坏的) stuff isn't everything. There's an interesting person developing in there. The cute-caterpillar (毛毛虫) stage was always going to be temporary. Be the person who sees him grow and transform into a butterfly, and delight in it.

Readers' thoughts:

·Been there. Survived. One action I took: I hugged him every day. Whether I wanted to or not.

—Linda

·Teens want to be seen as adults. Appreciate his desire to be independent and praise him when he is.

—David

·I recently saw a social media post that said: "You think you've got it bad? Some people are 15. "He has to survive being a teenager. Please be kind to him.

—Jeff

·I remember my parents started letting me set aside a summer weekend or two where I could stay up as late as I wanted. The rest of the year, I lived life according to our family's schedule and needs. But those precious few nights were 100 percent MINE.

—Sue

4 . It all started when I learned to read,or rather, before I learned to read.Throughout my childhood, I'd always had a bunch of ideas about who I would become when I was older. I'd be an inventor,a doctor,a waitress, or an artist. But the ideas ran out in middle school. I spent a few years wandering aimlessly through life, having no clue what I was passionate about.

In my first year of high school, I had an English teacher-let's call her Mrs.A-who changed my life. She was the type of person who captured everyone's attention the second they walked in a room. Midway through the year,I realized that I didn't just want to get a good grade in her class for my own sake, but I wanted to make her proud. Months went by, and I worked harder. I wrote in class and practiced essays at home on top of that. And each time,I'd bring it to her for feedback."Veronica," said Mrs.A after pulling me aside on the last day of school."I told the editors of the school newspaper you should write for them.”aimlessly anymore-I had a destination.I had decided I'd become a writer.Doing well at the school newspaper was the first step to get there.

Thirteen years after I wrote my first word, three years after Mrs.A gave me the "go ahead".I’m writing for newspapers all around the world. Each article reminds me of the little girl who said she’d become a writer.

5 . How to fight your bad breath

More than 80 million people suffer from bad breath, according to the Academy of General Dentistry, a professional association of dentists from Canada and the United States.     1    , the most common reason is poor oral hygiene (卫生). Here are some ways to fight bad breath and bring others talking to you a more pleasant experience.

    2    .

Onions and garlic add flavor to many foods, but they also add odors (臭味) not easily brushed away. The substances that cause their bad smells make their way into your bloodstream and travel to your lungs, where you breathe them out. The best way to avoid the problem is to avoid such foods.

Avoid dry mouth.

Saliva (唾液) is the key thing in your mouth that helps keep the odor under control because it helps wash away bacteria.     3    , try drinking water or chewing sugarless gum.

Brush and floss (用牙线清洁).

Oral hygiene experts recommend you brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once to reduce plaque (牙斑). The sticky buildup on your teeth collects bacteria that cause bad breath, and trapped food adds to the problem.     4    , the experts warn. If you brush too hard you can wear down your teeth.

Brush your tongue.

5    . To rid your tongue of odor-causing bacteria, remember to brush it when you clean your teeth. If your toothbrush is too big to reach the back of your tongue, buy a scraper, which is designed specifically to apply even pressure across the surface of the tongue area. This removes bacteria and dead cells that brushing alone can’t take care of.

A.Avoid certain foods
B.Don’t overdo things, though
C.If you aren’t producing much saliva
D.Bacteria don’t just live on your teeth
E.Brush your teeth after you eat these foods
F.Although bad breath can happen because of medical reasons
G.If your bad breath is thought to be caused by a potential health condition

8 . How to Become a Nice Person Again

You probably have someone in your life who's naturally nice to everyone. If that person used to be you, don't worry! There are a few easy ways you can become a nice person again and spread positivity throughout your life.     1

Forgive those who have wronged you.

Let go of any anger or grudges you're holding. Make peace with anything that's happened to you in the past so you can stop dwelling on it. It may not feel like it, but holding onto negative emotions can cloud your entire personality.     2     But you never have to tell someone you forgive them if you don't want to.

    3

Keep a positive attitude to avoid cynicism (愤世嫉俗). Although it might be tough in some situations, you can often find a silver lining, even when things look bad. If you can do that, you'll find yourself being nicer to others automatically. For instance, maybe you lose your job. However, now you have time to focus on your small business and grow your customer base without worrying about your day job.

Try not to be overly critical of others.

Keep your judgements to yourself as best you can. It can be easy to make quick judgments of other people, especially those we interact with a lot. However, try to keep in mind that you don't know what everyone is going through, and there may be a reason why they're acting that way. Similarly, you should try not to gossip about other people.     4

Practice self care.

5     It could be going for a jog, taking a bubble bath, listening to good music, or reading a new book. Whatever helps you wind down and relax is something that will lower your stress levels so you can be a nicer person.

A.Keep being nice to others.
B.Look on the bright side of things.
C.Do something relaxing every day that makes you feel good.
D.Talking badly behind someone's back only spreads negativity.
E.Admitting to your mistakes also makes you seem more confident.
F.Letting go of those emotions can free you up to become a nice person yet again.
G.Keep reading to learn how you can be kind and friendly to everyone around you.

9 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

At noon on a brilliant Tuesday in March, my 12-year-old son Kai and I are a mile and a half into a four-day, 27-mile walk through the Grand Canyon—his first backpacking trip — when he asks: “Are we almost to camp?”

Um, no. Camp, at Hermit Creek, is seven miles and nearly 2,500 feet below, which will take us several more hours. We’re going down a poorly maintained path off the canyon, across which we can see many of the canyon’s layers. This is on display in cliffs hundreds of feet tall, a reminder of how far we have to go.

We are here largely because of a birthday note Kai wrote me two years ago in which he declared, “You used to be a wild 10-year-old like me and now you’re a wild 53-year-old. We can do so many things together! I am excited for when I’m old enough for the Grand Canyon!”

There are, I suppose, dads who could resist that, just as there are fathers who would plan an experience-appropriate trip for their sons. I am neither, so here we are. Never mind that; aside from simply being 12, Kai has done almost nothing to physically prepare for this. Or that I haven’t backpacked for 13 years.

We head on past twisty trees and brush. Soon the view broadens, and the layers grow deeper, down to the shadowy, 1.8 billion-year-old Vishnu, a panorama(全景) that leaves Kai excited. “This place is amazing,” he says.

Nightfall in the canyon can be magical. Darkness surrounds us, pressed by cool air. We navigate a narrow path to the stream and, hearing the sound of a waterfall, lie down to take in the stars. Twice I suggest we turn in. “Not yet,” Kai says. “This is too unbelievable.”

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The last day’s plan is to travel the three miles to the Colorado River, which is the most challenging.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

Wrinkles of confusion rippled across Holly’s forehead as she opened the gift from her best friend, Susan.

“I...I thought you could use it for something.” Susan’s stammered explanation did nothing to help us understand why a twelve-by-eighteen-inch dark blue carpet remnant(残余物) was being presented as a birthday gift.

Holly, my daughter, tried bravely not to allow her disappointment to show. She laid the carpet on the kitchen counter, and the two girls headed outside to play.

The next morning, I carried a kitchen bag outside. My heart ached as I saw Susan’s carpet lying in the trash can. Hesitating only a moment, I reached in and picked it up. After giving it a light brushing, I brought it into the house and placed it in the hall closet. Occupied with the business of daily living, the carpet was soon forgotten.

Prior to Holly’s birthday, Susan had been a regular visitor in our home. On several occasions, she rode the bus home with Holly and was one of the few friends ever permitted to stay over on a school night. But now I realized it had been nearly three weeks since we’d even heard mention of Susan’s name. I missed her warm smile and eager-to-please ways.

One day, Holly had arrived home from school. “Susan invited me to come over to her house after school tomorrow,” she announced as she took her books down on the kitchen table. Although her voice carried a so-what attitude, I sensed she was pleased by the invitation.

Arrangements were made, and the girls rode home together on the school bus the following day. As I negotiated the winding country road that led to her house, Susan chatted nervously about her foster mom and the seventeen cats she had taken in and cared for. Soon we arrived at Susan’s house.

A woman wearing a shapeless sweater stood in the doorway to greet us as we approached the small shabby farmhouse.
