1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One day, some young people from a local rehabilitation (康复) center visited a wildlife park. Tippi, a guide, stood before a cheetah (猎豹). “Her name is Subira. She’s a three-year-old cheetah,” she tole the audience.

All the visitors sitting in the chairs were amazed by the cheetah’s beauty, except a teenage boy, Cory. He pulled a long face and made noises, showing his boredom.

Tippi continued, “The cheetah is the fastest animal on earth.” “Aren’t you, honey?” She asked in a cheerful tone, looking at the cheetah lying atop a tree. Giving Subira a dirty look, Cory replied, “Oh, just a skinny cat. Next! Bring out the stupid tigers or whatever so we can get this over with!” However, the cheetah gently looked at Cory and make a happy sound. “I think she likes you,” Tippi told Cory. “I don’t care,” the boy just replied.

What had happened to Cory? Why was he so angry? The boy had dreamed of someday playing Major League Baseball and having many fans. He knew he had a promising future. That was before the car accident. In it, he lost his leg and also lost his hope, joy and spirit. He felt useless and hopeless.

Now he sat in a wheelchair, angry at the world. He was here today on another “boring field trip” from the rehabilitation program. Suddenly, the creature jumped down. Seeming to show her skills, she immediately ran fast forward. “Oh, she’s so beautiful,” the crowd said.

It was an overnight trip to New York, and I was taking it with a few friends of mine from the boarding school I was attending. I was headed home to surprise my family for holidays and was pretty excited about it.

We settled into (安心待在) our seats for the long ride ahead,well-stocked with candy. The bus slowly settled down for the night, as each of us tried to make ourselves as comfortable as possible. Most of us tried finding comfortable sleeping positions as a peaceful silence fell upon the moving bus.

And then, the silence was broken by a decidedly unhappy cry. It was a baby, and he was crying loudly. His father tried hard to silence him, but did not succeed. He seemed unsure of what to do, how to deal with the baby in his arms. And he was all alone.

I wondered what would cause a man so young to be traveling alone with a baby. My heart went out to him; he looked ready to cry himself. And that baby just broke my heart.

So I took a step out of my comfortable seat and went up to his dad.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My Father, My Hero

I consider my father to be the most important person in my life. This is not because he is famous or wealthy. We do not have a big car, and there are no old, expensive vases or paintings in our house. Rather, what I value about my father is the care and love he shows for me and my family. What blesses my father most is being able to put food on the table and a roof over our heads.

My father might work hard, but he is always there for us. Whenever I trip or hurt myself playing sports, he's there to pick me up. My brother and I grew up with his constant care and the funny nursery rhymes and stories he told us.

My father also helps our local community. My father has been successful as he never shrinks from helping others. People also like him because he often has a smile on his face. He is optimistic and finds good in all situations. He is great at problem-solving, and his favorite phrases are “Don't worry! It’s not worth it” and “It will be all right—just you wait and see”. He is always right! And I have learnt from him the need to be patient and honest, and to care for other people.

I can well remember that when my mother and father got married, they did not have much money. The situation got worse when they had children. When we were very young, my father had an extra job as a hotel porter, and he also mopped the floor of a hotel every night so that he could give us a special treat or a vacation. At the start of last year, my father began putting at least fifty cents every day into a jar on a shelf in his bedroom. We all wondered what he was saving the money for, but he refused to tell us.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Hunter and Palmer ran their first 30 kilometres. Nine months earlier, neither of them could run five miles. But they had just finished something they hadn’t done before, and now they continued to complete their first marathon.

Months earlier, my wife Lisa woke up at 4: 45 a.m. to discover our older son, Hunter, had been playing the videogame since he got home from school the previous day. To break this habit, we tried several ways, like limiting the amount of time he was allowed to play each day, but couldn’t find anything that worked consistently.

I’m not a fan of video games. In the summer, my parents would lock the door behind us in the morning as we left to play street football. In the early 1990s, I was a summer camp counselor at our local church and knew that this new generation of kids was different from mine. Many of the campers played videogames on little portable(可携带的) devices, and it was hard getting their attention.

I’m not against videogames; I’m just against playing them every waking moment at the expense of exercise. Trying to ensure that our kids didn’t become one of them, I came up with an idea and acted with Lisa. Effective immediately, video-game time in our house would have to be earned, just like money. Each mile run equals 30 minutes of video-game play. The only limit to the amount of time he played was based on how far he decided.

Instead of choosing to run so he could play games, Hunter decided to boycott(抵制) the new program and instead chose to spend that time sleeping. It was still better than playing videogames.

Eventually, as the temptation(诱惑) of playing games was just too much, he decided he would give running a shot. Since the overall goal of the new program was to get him to exercise, I told him he could earn credits for his favorite football practices and games. I also added that on weekends or holidays, he would earn double time (one hour) for each mile he ran.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Jackie Oelfke, a retired bank manager. pays great attention to developing children’s independent financial awareness from an early age. She bought a piggy bank (存钱罐) for every child. She even passed on the good tradition to her granddaughter. Sunshine Oelfke. When Sunshine was just born, Jackie Oelfke bought her a large piggy bank. They used the piggy bank as a toy. Later, when Sunshine grew older, they would pour out coins and play games. When they had small change, they took the coins back and put them in the money storage tank. enjoying it tirelessly. What they lack is not money, but a good habit. The little girl has always believed in this concept: even if you are rich, you should be careful with your money.

Two weeks ago, the 7-year-old girl emptied her piggy bank onto the living room floor after school and immediately started counting. Jackie thought she was playing as she carefully lined up the coins. but then she saw the girl put the coins into a plastic bag and place it in her backpack. Her mind was so busily engaged that she did not always know when she was silent.

“That aroused my curiosity,” Jackie said. “Nobody messes with the piggy bank.” After observing Sunshine at work for a few minutes longer. Jackie decided to find out why the little girl broke into her savings.

“What are you doing with that money?” Jackie asked her granddaughter with a smile.

“I’m taking it to school.” Sunshine replied without looking. She seemed to struggle before talking to her grandma. The little girl finally stated the real reason why she needed the money. “I’m going to take it for milk money. My friend Layla doesn’t get milk—her mum doesn’t have milk money and I do.”

As a special guest, Jackie once went to participate in activities organized at Sunshine’s school. Sunshine’s teacher, Rita Hausher, told her that many students in her class came from poor families, and she remembered having Layla. At that time, she had the idea of helping them, but she didn’t know how to do it more appropriately.

7 . Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s)of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

I read what you wrote about “the good old days” with interest. Despite making some sensible points, to my mind your argument is wildly oversimplified in saying that the old days were better. All too often nowadays, we hear these black-and-white opinions about “globalization“. In my opinion, it’s a grey area and there are important benefits as well as some inevitable downsides as we move away from the good old days.

I feel that cultures well-received globally are not fixed and many of the best things come from culture mixing. For example, many British people didn’t like the very spicy food introduced by Indian people. As a result, Indian food in Britain is not the same as an authentic curry from India, but for some, it’s even better. I took part in some market research recently and found out that even branded goods are often changed to suit local tastes. Did you know, for example, that McDonald’s sells beer in France, lamb in India, and chili in Mexico?

I found it hard to take in what you said about language. Did you really mean that English is ”taking over the world“, as you put it? I don’t think so! I agree that huge numbers of people now speak English. At the start of the 21st century, about one and a half billion(1,500,000,000)people spoke English. That includes about 400 million speaking English as their first language and the rest speaking it as a second or third language. However, in many cases, a new type of English has been created. A kind of ”global English“ has taken off across the world. I think this is good in that it promotes communication in an ever-shrinking, ever more commercial world. People certainly don’t want a single world language, but a new common global language has major advantages for global business, scientific research and tourism.

Some people—like you—may be saddened by the passing of the “old days” but it seems to me that most people are welcoming the mixing of cultures and the new things that are being created all the time.

8 . 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

People often talk about the “walls” that some individuals build around themselves. I was one of those individuals. Long after I divorced and became a single parent, I still wore my wedding ring. Maybe it was because I didn’t want anyone to know that I had failed at something in my life. Wearing that ring helped me pretend that everything was okay.

You think that people can’t see through those kinds of walls. But they do. They just know enough not to let you know that they see you are pretending. One day at work, however, pretending didn’t come that easily. I was on my coffee break with colleagues. Then my cell phone rang and the garage boss told me loudly the car repairs would come to $850. I looked worried. I needed that car to hold down my present job. Without it, I would have to walk fourteen miles to and from work in North Bay. I felt sick. I didn’t have a credit card, and I certainly couldn’t call the $28 in my bank account “savings”. But every problem has a solution, and in my case that meant I had to ask someone else for something—even if it was only a lift downtown after work. Luckily, my colleague Jane volunteered to give me a ride to the garage after work.

I spent the rest of the afternoon trying to come up with bright ideas about how to pay my garage bill. I figured I could borrow $200 from my mom and pay her back at a rate of $2.50 a week. I thought of what I had at home that I could live without and therefore sell. I finally decided the best I could do was to offer to type up invoices (发票) for the garage.

10 . Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s)of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Green is an important colour in nature. It is the colour of grass and the leaves on trees, the colour of most growing plants.

Sometimes the word green means young, fresh and growing. Sometimes it describes something that is not yet ripe or finished.

Someone who has the ability to grow plants well is said to have a “green thumb”. The expression and a similar one, “green fingers”, come from the 1990s. A person with “green thumb” seems to have a magic touch that makes plants grown quickly and well. You could say that the woman next door has a “green thumb” when her garden continues to produce long after your plants have died.

You may wish to have a “green thumb”, but you surely do not wish to be a “greenhorn”. A “greenhorn” is a person who has no experience, who is new to a situation.

In the 15th century, a “greenhorn” was a young cow or ox whose horns had not yet developed. A century or so later a greenhorn was a soldier who had not yet had any experience in a battle. By the 18th century a greenhorn had the meaning it has today—a person who is new in a job.

Green is also the colour used to describe the powerful emotion, jealousy. The “green-eyed monster” is not a frightening creature from outer space. It is the name given by Shakespeare in his play Othello to jealousy.

When someone talks about the “green-eyed monster”, he is talking about the unpleasant feeling a person has when he thinks he has lost the person he loves to someone else. You could say that a person has been suffering from the “green-eyed monster” ever since his girlfriend began going out with someone else.

In most places in the world, a green light is a signal to go ahead. A green light traffic signal means your vehicle may continue on.

In everyday speech a “green light” means approval to continue with a program or action. A government agency may be given the “green light” to go ahead with a project after the government approves it.
