1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整的短文。

Have you ever felt the need to grab a pen and start writing your thoughts on a piece of paper? Tom had always been a lover of stories, and of words that come together to create vivid imagery (意象). He would spend hours writing down his thoughts and ideas, crafting worlds and people with his pen and paper.

But when it came to his parents, they didn’t believe how much he enjoyed writing. In fact, they discouraged him, telling him that he should focus on more practical career fields like becoming a lawyer.

The annual writing competition arrived once again, which was a time to show creative writing as well as the vivid imagination of students. Although Tom had a burning passion for writing, he had always hesitated to enter the race. He was worried that his parents would disapprove of him spending so much time writing, leading him to miss the competition in previous years. But this time, he decided to take a chance and see if he could win this race. Perhaps if his parents saw how talented he truly was, they would come to support him.

Days passed as he carefully prepared his writing, pouring his heart and soul into every word. When he finished, he read it over and felt proud of what he had written. He prepared to hand in his writing, but his parents still believed he was wasting time. He still decided to submit his entry anyway.

Weeks went by before the contest’s results were announced. Tom waited anxiously, wondering if his writing was good enough to win a prize. He checked out his mailbox every day after school.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了选择一个有用的专业很重要并就专业的选择提出一些建议。

3 . For every college student, the time to choose a major (专业) finally arrives. For some students, choosing a major is as simple as following a life-long dream.     1     No matter your view on this higher education milestone, it is important to choose a major that is useful to you.

2     This may seem too sudden if you are a freshman in college, but it is an important step. Think of your major not as a summary of your life to date, but instead as a window to your future.

If your long-term goals are fairly clear, you may be able to quickly make your list of possible majors. Meet with your advisor to get to know which degrees are required for your future career (职业) or field. If you plan to become a content marketer, for example, you might major in communications, English, or marketing.     3

Having a career in mind is important, but keeping your choices open is equally important.     4     Getting a degree in a general field — like biology or English — can also be a useful strategy if you are not sure about your future career.

Most majors at a given college or university have different admission (录取) requirements.     5     Some music departments, for example, require that students audition (试音) for a place in a major.

A.For others, it is a challenging thing.
B.The earlier you follow your dream, the better.
C.It is important to think carefully about your choice.
D.Very few people stay with one career for their entire life.
E.When choosing a major, start by considering your plans after graduation.
F.A career in electrical engineering, however, may only require a degree in engineering.
G.When making a list of majors, make sure you know the admission requirements of each one.

文章大意:本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。主要论述了作者自己的创业经历,告诉创业者要意识到创业成功没有捷径,当经历逆境时,永远不要把它当成敌人,要把它当成盟友。

4 . These days, seemingly everyone is creating their own business. People are talking about entrepreneurship as if once you start your own business, everything will flow smoothly for the rest of your life. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case.

My story of building resilience (承受力) in business began when I was an employee years ago, tired of working for someone else. I wanted to start my own business, so as a musician myself, I came up with the concept of helping other musicians with their business.

It was not an easy time. I had to count pennies to feed myself. But slowly, through word-of-mouth spread, not only among musician, but small businesses as well, I was developing a client base. After years of hard work, eventually my company now serves Fortune 500 companies.

As a musician, I decided to create a music and film project called X: The Human Condition. It was my message in a bottle—you are not alone. I wanted to inspire people who felt disconnected, alienated, different.

I had to fund it myself because out of all the people I approached in the entertainment industry, they all said it would be impossible and nobody wanted to invest. But I was determined to prove them wrong. Over 12 years, I struggled to get the project off the ground. I almost went broke and became so ill that I nearly lost my vision permanently. I overcame every obstacle that was put in front of me, and after 12 years we were able to release the project successfully. The experiences with adversity led me to create the website, Rise Up Again.org, a community of people from all over the world overcoming difficulties and sharing their stories to inspire others.

When it comes to entrepreneurship, expect the unexpected. Regardless, be aware that there is no shortcut to building resilience. Mastering adversity is one that must be learned through trial and error. But the important thing to note is that when you do go through adversity, never think of it as your enemy, think of it as your ally.

1. What can we learn about the author?
A.He was a successful musician.B.He longed to be a boss.
C.He changed his career path.D.His business ran smoothly.
2. Why did the author start the project X: The Human Condition?
A.To send a message in a bottle.B.To fund the homeless people.
C.To promote musical films.D.To encourage those in adversity.
3. What is the biggest challenge for the author to start his business?
A.Health problem.B.Financial difficulty.
C.Lack of experience.D.Community objection.
4. What would the author say to new businessmen?
A.Try to make some errors.B.Get used to your expectation.
C.There is no shortcut to success.D.Difficulties can make you tougher.

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。文章介绍了第一批“00后”毕业生离开校园进入职场,并分享了其中一位毕业生张晓静有关人生决策的经历。

5 . The annual college graduation season is just drawing to a close. As most of this year’s graduates were born in 2000 or 2001, they are the first of the “00’s generation” to leave the campus and enter the workplace.

These graduates also have a second defining characteristic: three of their four years of college life were dominated by the COVID-19 epidemic, so they stayed home to take online classes or were quarantined in their dormitories. Some said they were surprised to have graduated without having eaten in every one of their school’s canteens.

Those factors have left two marks on them: a sense of security due to a favorable economic environment and anxiety caused by the pandemic and increased job competition. Zhang Xiaojing, who was born in September 2000, graduated from Beijing Jiaotong University with a bachelor’s in Internet journalism. Like her peers, she is skilled in the use of a range of news software, self-media platforms and social media apps. The huge amount of information flowing from the Internet meant that even from her earliest days at university she learned to think, be discerning and plan.

“My generation is exposed to too much information, so when making future life choices, we need a stronger ability to choose from information. If you make a big life choice in a confused way, the risks are bigger than before,” she said.

With a plan for her future career in mind, she began an internship in the summer of her sophomore year. After trying five different companies and units including iQiyi, Tencent and traditional media she decided to undertake postgraduate study.

“School is a very special period when we can learn social behavior and even make mistakes. We still have a lot of experience,” she said. “There is still much to experience and explore before settling on a specific career path.” With this in mind, she valued taking the time to gain more exposure and try different areas.

1. What is the defining characteristic of the “00’s generation” college graduates?
A.Their ability to adapt to online classes during the pandemic.
B.Their proficiency in various news software and social media apps.
C.Their sense of security due to a favorable economic environment.
D.Their anxiety caused by increased job competition.
2. What did Zhang Xiaojing emphasize regarding decision-making?
A.The need for critical thinking and exploration.
B.The importance of gaining exposure and trying different areas.
C.The risks associated with making confused life choices.
D.The value of informed decision-making to avoid unnecessary risks.
3. What influenced Zhang Xiaojing’s decision to pursue postgraduate studies?
A.Her desire for practical experience in various industries.
B.The opportunities for personal growth during college.
C.The need to gain exposure and explore different areas.
D.The consideration of different career paths through internships.
4. What is the main message conveyed by Zhang Xiaojing’s experiences?
A.The importance of gaining practical experience through internships.
B.The need for informed decision-making in the face of overwhelming information.
C.The value of taking time to explore different areas before settling on a career path.
D.The challenges faced by the “00’s generation” due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要讲述南卡罗来纳州格林维尔一所公立小学A.J.Whittenberg的工程周。每个月有一周,来自当地行业的工程师会参观教室,与学生谈论他们的职业生涯。

6 . The brown paper bag hit the ground. A Michelin engineer picked it up and opened it, revealing a cracked, leaking egg. The third graders at A.J. Whittenberg Elementary School were disappointed when they saw the runny mess.

It was engineering week at A.J. Whittenberg, a public primary school in Greenville, South Carolina. One week per month, engineers from local industries visit the classrooms and talk to students about their careers.

Greenville is now introducing the idea of a career path to students in primary school and giving students the option to follow those programs to middle and high schools. Each primary school focuses on a specific technical skill. The district allows students to attend schools outside of their attendance boundaries as long as space is available, which means students can choose to continue to follow their chosen career pathway at a middle school with corresponding programs.

The effort in Greenville is part of a growing national trend in which school districts partner with local industries to develop curriculum (课程) and expose students to specialized careers at a young age.

Some education experts worry the focus on industry qualifications has resulted in schools taking on responsibilities that should fall to businesses, like training workers for specific job duties, damaging a more comprehensive education in schools. “Schools are to not just prepare people for work and strengthen the economy, but also a place where students should experience art, music and think creatively,” said Jack Schneider, a professor of education at the University of Massachusetts.

A teacher from Greenville, however, said, “Career exposure has a big impact on kids. We’re not really wanting them to make a decision—‘I’m in the second grade and now I’m locked in to being whatever when I graduate from high school in 10 years.’ We just hope students walk across the graduation stage with plans for a career in mind.”

Modern times need modern solutions. When students leave school, they need to be already down their road to college, if that’s what they’re going to do, or schools need to give them something that allows them to get to work and earn a living. Just getting out with a high school degree doesn’t do that.

1. Why were the third graders disappointed?
A.Their test failed.B.The bag missed the target.
C.Engineers disturbed them.D.They had to clean the ground.
2. What does Greenville do to help students follow their chosen path?
A.Design more career paths.B.Invite engineers to their schools.
C.Adopt the open enrollment policy.D.Offer more courses for them to choose.
3. What is Jack Schneider concerned about?
A.People’s employment.B.Students’ overall development.
C.The nation’s economy.D.The school’s innovative education.
4. Which statement would the author most likely agree with?
A.Modern solutions are hard to find.
B.More students need college education.
C.Greenville’s practice is not acceptable.
D.A high school degree is not enough for jobs.

文章大意:本文是记叙文。作者博士毕业后面临选择研究方向和实验室等一系列的问题。

8 . After I finished my PhD in 2014 at Duke University, I stayed for an extra year to finish a paper and look for a postdoc (博士后) position. The first step of my process was to decide what I wanted to do with my career, and then I should find a laboratory that would help me to achieve that. I was a bit anxious about making such a strong statement about my career—a feeling that I think is shared by many graduating students.

The next step in my process was to broadly identify what type of field I wanted to work in and which techniques, system and organism I wanted to learn. Several people advised me to change one or two of these choices from my PhD work, which was in yeast cell biology (酵母细胞生物学). Although I really value having experience in multiple fields and techniques, I don’t think this change is absolutely necessary. I also talked my options through with my PhD adviser, Daniel Lew, and my lab mates. In the end, I decided to stay working with yeast but to take on more biochemistry approaches.

I then put together a list of possible labs as I read papers and university websites. By this point, my partner and I had decided that we would like to live in Europe, because it would be a great opportunity to move somewhere else and experience a different way of living. I preferred labs in Europe, but I included many in the United States as well.

I applied to eight labs by e mail: four labs in the United States and four in Europe. In the end, I decided on John Diffley’s lab at the Francis Crick Institute in London.

I could imagine how I would develop as a scientist in John’s lab and ultimately gain more independence. When you’re on an academic career track, that’s a big part of the experience becoming independent and designing your own projects.

1. What did the author do first for a postdoc position?
A.Work in a university for an extra year.B.Determine what to do with his career.
C.Look for a proper laboratory for research.D.Overcome his anxiety about his career.
2. Why did the author choose yeast cell biology for his postdoc position?
A.He thought it was popular.
B.He liked experiencing multiple fields.
C.He accepted his adviser’s and lab mates’ advice.
D.He considered it unnecessary to work in other fields.
3. What made the author prefer European laboratories?
A.Few suitable laboratories in the U. S.B.Focusing on research and pursuing his aim.
C.A better opportunity to finish his postdoc.D.Wishing for living a different lifestyle.
4. How will the author work in John’s lab?
A.By depending on John’s help.B.By designing his own projects.
C.By discussing yeast in groups.D.By sharing his good experience.
9 . 将下列几个部分(A、B、C、D和E)按题号排序,构成一个符合逻辑的完整语篇。
A. It won’t be enough to have only a general understanding of our area of work but we should keep learning until we become specialists.
B. There will be new essential 21st century skills that we will have to have.
C. And given that people will not stay in the same career for long, we can expect that we will have to go back to education and training at some stage to be qualified to work in another field.
D. For example, a university degree is still useful, but technology developments mean that many skills we have now are unlikely to remain relevant in the future.
E. Earning a decent salary is one thing, but if we really want to succeed in our careers we have to be innovators, thinking of new and exciting ways to do things.
