War started in our house in late July with a month to go before my first day of college. There were a number of colleges for me to go to. Mom, who was an 1 (optimism) woman, wanted me to attend a famous nursing school, and 2 did Dad. But I wanted to go to a small writing college. Every night for two weeks, my mother and I argued, shouted and gave silent treatments (沉默以待) until both sides went to bed with regrets. Neither of us 3 (be) willing to agree with each other.
Since my junior year of high school, I had aimed at being a nurse. While 4 (take) all the science courses, I was also working as a volunteer in my town's local hospital. My motivation was to help the sick and be a superwoman to the world.
Yet, as graduation and college neared, it all changed. Having the sick 5 (treat) was noble, but not what I was meant to do for the rest of my life. The career was not so enjoyable.
But writing was what I had been doing as a hobby and I would concentrate 6 it. I 7 (firm) believed that it was going to be my career. I could be absorbed in it. On August 1st, no sooner had Mom and I sat down at the dinner table than I told her that she had every right to choose where to spend her money, just like I had every right to decide where I wanted to go to school.
8 (persuade) to let me attend a small writing college in the end, my mother decided to support me, which meant the world to me. My mother said to me, "Would you like to be a writer?” I answered, "Yes, I would like to." In the end, I won my mother's real 9 (approve).
Before that time, never 10 I stood up against my parents on any major decision. I am now finished with my first term and I cannot wait to see what comes next.
