Before deciding on your future career, it’s important to perform thorough research and to know your options. Knowing all of your career choices can help you make the right decision
How do you really know what career (职业) you want? You can do research and do personality tests but it’s still hard to really know for sure. For many jobs, as well, bosses are looking for people with work experience. You need to have a job to get experience but can’t get a job without experience.
So why not do some voluntary work? Yes, that means doing a job without pay. You can help people who are in need. You can find out more about careers and get experience. At the same time. you can meet people from different places.
The Chinese Government is a great supporter of voluntary work. It has helped set up more than 24.000 volunteer service cen tres where people can go to find out how they can help their community. Millions of people in China already do so. Here are some examples of how you can help:
Teach English in a rural (农村的) area. Believe it or not. teaching is also a great way of improving your English. You have to think about how to explain grammar and vocabulary, which makes you learn more. You’ll be helping people and finding out if you would like to be a teacher.
Do office work for a charity. You can get office experience and training on using computer software.
Help in a hospital. If you’re thinking about becoming a nurse or doctor, there’s no better way to find out what it’s like. You may find you are afraid of the sight of blood.
Protect the environment.The Chinese Government launched (发起) a “green movement” of young volunteers, named Protect the Mother River. Young volunteers have been planting trees to fight against desertification and water pollution in important sections along the Yellow River.

7 . Visit a medium-or large-sized company these days, and you’re likely to find the staff members sharing a large, open space. Instead of having personal offices with doors and walls, most workers sit in cubicles (隔间) that are half open. Whenever workers talk on the phone, other members of staff nearby can’t simply shut their doors. In fact, sometimes they can’t help but overhear everything that’s said. At times, the best way to focus in this type of office is to reach for one’s headphones and listen to music.
The open office idea is not new; it was created by a team of consultants from Hamburg, Germany, in the 1950s. Called the office landscape (景观) plan, the idea was created with a good attempt—to improve communication and the exchange of ideas. The design also encouraged managers and their teams to work near each other, making it easier for managers to guide projects. Now, the open office idea is often used as an excuse for companies to save money on building costs, paying no attention to the effect on working performance.
Many start-ups have a great interest in the open office idea. Take Chartbeat for example. The company’s 50-plus staff members get to choose their desk and chair styles, and everyone shares an open space with the CEO sitting in the middle. The office space has both single workstations and informal meeting areas where workers can relax themselves on sofas. While this design may be perfect for workers in start-ups, it may not be convenient for workers who have a great need of personal space.
In 2011 Matthew Davis, an organizational psychologist (心理学家), reviewed over a hundred studies regarding office environments. He found that, to staff in open offices, it was harder to stay focused and more likely to suffer higher stress levels than those working in traditional offices. What's worse, a study in Denmark found that workers in open offices took more sick days than those working in traditional offices.
Even though open office plans present hidden problems in terms of worker health and personal needs, businesses probably won’t return to traditional offices. Modern office workers tend to need both times to focus and times to work together with others. So designing offices that account for both needs may be the best way forward.

8 . Does college year seem a long way off? What about several years later? These are the dates to look toward when planning your career. The possibilities are prepared especially for those who see the big picture and have insight to research their options.
Students pick occupations for many reasons. Yet choosing something that simply sounds exciting may not be the best option. Familiarity with a career doesn’t automatically make it a good profession for you. Although no one can predict the future, it makes more sense to eye trends in the economy and the workplace before making that critical decision. Picking the right field will make landing a dream job after school a reality.
Having the ability to see the big picture is key. High school graduates should research the jobs that will be in demand in 10 to 20 years to determine the best future careers as they consider further schooling. According to one guidance counselor “The key word would be ‘explore’. Explore every option—don’t limit yourself or sell yourself short. Think that you can do whatever you want to do.” Choosing a career can be complicated because of today’s rapidly changing world.
According to Next Step Magazine, up-and-coming jobs are, not surprisingly, in healthcare including dentists, medical scientists. home health aides, etc. When choosing a career in healthcare, consider how attainable it is. How long will it take to complete the necessary program? Also consider the salary, status, and quality of life of that profession. Some jobs require long hours, weekends, and holidays, while others have more traditional hours.
Sometimes a job is significantly more difficult or tedious than it appears. Selecting a career because you want to make a difference in others’ lives becomes unsettling when you realize that crucial changes may not be possible due to complicated reasons.
A job’s total compensation package can be critical too. It’s not just about the salary. It’s about healthcare benefits, paid vacation, retirement plans, stock options and other perks often available to educated and specially trained individuals.
Keeping your options open, even if the career decision seems obvious, can work to your advantage. Continue to research responsibilities. To avoid disappointment, think ahead, and try to predict where the voids will be in the career market.

Why start or join a job club? Job searching can possibly be a lonely and discouraging process, but it doesn't have to be that way. Becoming part of a local job club can offer valuable help. It may also bring a strong sense of confidence that gets you going in the right direction. When you know that your fellow members expect to hear regularly about your progress, you're more likely to have a positive attitude towards the club meeting. To support your success, the club will provide practical suggestions, including specific (特定的) discussion topics to get you started and keep you encouraged along the way of overcoming the difficulties in a job hunt.
