3 . There are well-documented mental health benefits to pet ownership, as much research has shown. Indeed, we know there are some physical benefits as well, as dog owners tend to have more active lifestyles. Yet when it comes to conditions like allergies (过敏), we tend to think of pet ownership as exacerbating, not alleviating them.

Hence, a recent study published in the journal PLOS One might come as a surprise. The study, published Wednesday, found that children raised with cats and dogs early in life had a 13 to 16 % lower risk of developing all food allergies than those who did not own pets.

The researchers engaged in a detailed survey, studying 65,000 children. They found that children who were exposed to dogs either during fetal (胎儿) development, or up to the age of 3 years old were less likely to have nut, milk and egg allergies.

This wasn’t true for other pets that weren’t cats and dogs. Indeed, the same research found that children exposed to hamsters during this same period had an increased risk of nut allergies. Yet children who were exposed to cats during their early years were likewise less likely to develop specific allergies — namely, allergies to wheat, soybean and egg.

While the study is not the final word on the issue — the researchers note “further studies using oral food challenges are required to more accurately assess the incident of food allergies” — it reinforces preexisting research on the seemingly funny ways that cats influence human development.

In addition to adding to the growing body of scientific literature about pets and human health, the PLOS One also reinforces earlier research about the role of the environment in developing allergies. The research repeatedly found that exposure to farmyard dirt, dust and the various fine hairs that fly off animals helps children in their breathing system development.

1. What does the underlined word “exaccrbating” in paragraph 1 best mean?
A.Worsening.B.Damaging.
C.Improving.D.Benefiting.
2. What agrees with the result of the recent research?
A.Kids over 3 will have more food allergies.
B.Hamsters cause the most allergies to children.
C.All pet ownership will not reduce food allergies.
D.Cat owners are less likely to be allergic than dog owners.
3. What is the author’s attitude to the PLOS One study?
A.Satisfied.B.Objective.
C.Doubtful.D.Unconcerned.
4. What is a best title for the text?
A.Benefits brought by raising animals
B.Pet ownership making kids healthier
C.Researches on different food allergies

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者三年前为了减少焦虑,选择走向户外。从此爱上了亲近大自然,还培养孩子一切享受自然之美。

4 . Being a writer in the 21st century can keep you in front of a screen for so long that it feels like the room is sideways. Being a human with the Internet can mean hours spent on social media, scrolling and posting for so long that your sense of reality actually becomes sideways. Three years ago, I started to search for ways to deal with my anxiety. I had a brilliant idea, one that felt completely foreign to people like me: I’d go outside, to the real outside.

I grew up in the city, not hiking or camping, so I knew nothing about the outdoors. I have three kids with endless energy, so I figured I could solve two questions at once. I would get a breather from my job and the kids would play with insects and realize there is nothing better than nature.

We drove to Great Falls, Virginia, where hundreds of people on any given day spent hours meandering through the hillside and forest. The blue water pulsed, turning white and crashing powerfully hundreds of feet beneath us. The kids held their breath as if they had seen magics. But it’s just nature, just the outside, and that had been there all along. Since then, we’ve been fascinated.

Last summer I felt my home’s walls closing in, so I decided to go camping. I built my first fire. My kids watched my every move, asking every ten minutes to help get more branches and roast meat. About a month, my craving to take a break from the city grew again. We camped two more times before the cold came, each time seeing a bit more of what nature had to offer city folks.

1. Why did the author decide to go outside three years ago?
A.Because he was interested in nature.B.Because he hoped to reduce anxiety.
C.Because he fell in love with camping.D.Because he was eager for the outdoors.
2. What does the author want his kids to do?
A.Enjoy the beauty of nature.B.Stay away from social media.
C.Learn to protect themselves.D.Choose to do what they are fond of.
3. How did the kids feel about the tour to Great Falls?
A.Tired.B.Scared.C.Bored.D.Excited.
4. What does the underlined word “craving” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Memory.B.Chance.C.Desire.D.Ability.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了商业航空的潜在趋势是将转为单人驾驶,但是想要实现单机组客机航空公司还有很长的路要走。

6 . If you had boarded a passenger plane in 1950, you would have seen five people in the cockpit (驾驶舱): two pilots, a radio operator, a navigator and a flight engineer. Over the years, technical advances have gradually removed the need for the last three, leaving just two pilots. That has been the norm (标准) in commercial aviation for decades.

However, things could be simplified further — one of the two remaining pilots could soon go. Many military aircraft are already manned by a single pilot, and for commercial aviation this would mean stepping into a brave new world.

But how will airlines make this brave innovation come true? One way is to greatly increase automation in the cockpit, devoting more tasks to computers. Another is to shift the same tasks from the cockpit to the ground. “The latter approach seems to be more workable, at least in the short term, because much of what is required already exists,” says Patrick Smith, an airline pilot flying Boeing 767 aircraft. “A trained ground operator could observe a number of flights at once and even fully control the plane remotely if needed.”

It’s true that single-pilot operations could help airlines save money, but there is another reason which makes them quicken their pace for this crucial breakthrough. Boeing predicts a need for 600,000 new pilots in the next two decades, but by some estimates, there will be a deficit (赤字) of at least 34,000 pilots globally by 2025. Reducing the number of pilots on some crews or aircraft could lessen the impact of this.

Perhaps the biggest barrier to a single pilot will be selling the idea to passengers. In 2019, Don Hairis, a professor at Coventry University, conducted a survey on the prospect of flying on an airliner with just one pilot. Just a minority of participants said they’d be willing to take that flight, and the general idea was that removing a pilot increased the possibility of accidents. In the study, Harris concluded that the single-crew airliner would be still probably 20 years away.

1. What is the potential trend in commercial aviation according to the text?
A.It will make air travel eco-friendly.
B.It will switch to single-pilot operations.
C.It will tighten its flight control for safety concerns.
D.It will bring in many military aircraft to the industry.
2. What does Patrick Smith think is a quick way to realize airlines’ brave innovation?
A.Raising the standards in admitting new pilots.
B.Making pilots adaptable to different situations.
C.Using computers to automate the flight process.
D.Gaining piloting support from ground operators.
3. What can be inferred from Don Harris’ study?
A.The prospect of single-crew airliners is bright.
B.It’s urgent that airlines reduce airplane accidents.
C.Passengers are willing to try new types of airplanes.
D.Airlines have a long way to go before the innovation occurs.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了父亲Dick和无法控制自己的手脚的儿子Rick一起跑步,从而改变了他们各自生活的故事。

7 . I try to be a good father. Cook my kids good dishes, and take them to photo shoots. But compared with Dick Hoyt, I suck. Eighty-five times he’s pushed his disabled son, Rick, in marathons.

This love story began in Winchester Mass., 43 years ago, when Rick was strangled (缠住) by the umbilical cord (脐带) during birth, leaving him brain-damaged and unable to control his limbs (四肢). “He’ll be a vegetable (植物人) the rest of his life,” doctors told Dick and his wife, Judy, when Rick was nine months old. “Put him in an institution.” But the Hoyts weren’t buying it. They noticed the way Rick’s eyes followed them around the room.

When Rick was 11, they took him to the engineering department at Tufts University. Equipped with a computer, Rick was finally able to communicate. After a high school classmate was paralyzed (使瘫痪) in an accident, and the school organized a charity run for him, Rick said, “Dad, I want to do that.” How was Dick, a man who never ran more than a mile at a time, going to push his son five miles? Still, he tried. That day changed Rick’s life. “Dad,” he typed, “when we were running, it felt like I wasn’t disabled anymore!”

That sentence changed Dick’s life. He became obsessed with giving Rick that feeling as often as he could. They even decided to try marathons. “No way,” Dick was told by a race official. They weren’t quite a single runner, and they weren’t quite a wheelchair competitor. For a few years, Dick and Rick joined the massive field and ran anyway. In 1983, they ran another marathon so fast that they made the qualifying time for the Boston Marathon the following year.

Now they’ve done 212 triathlons and 85 marathons. “My dad is the Father of the Century,” Rick typed.

1. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 mean?
A.The Hoyts didn’t believe it was true.
B.The Hoyts couldn’t afford any institution.
C.The Hoyts couldn’t deal with the situation.
D.The Hoyts had no money for their son’s treatment.
2. What’s discussed in the third paragraph?
A.Why Rick became paralyzed.B.How Rick started running.
C.Why running changed Rick’s life.D.How Rick communicated with others.
3. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A boy with a rare diseaseB.The greatest dad in the world
C.A tough road to marathonsD.Parents’ influence on children’s life

8 . If you expect to work in the future in the travel industry, you should begin learning Chinese.

That’s because Chinese people spent nearly $258 billion in total on international travel last year. That’s more than twice the combined amount spent on international travel by people from the United States and Germany, the next two biggest-spending nations. The Chinese are relative (相对的) newcomers when it comes to traveling beyond their nation’s borders and only a small percentage of them travel outside of China each year. Given the size of that nation’s population, even that small percentage represents well over 100 million Chinese travelers to foreign destinations.

Yet Chinese citizens flew, on average, just 65milcs last year vs. the 227 miles flown on average by US residents (居民), the 285 miles flown on average by Germans, the 271 miles flown on average by those from the United Kingdom, and the 632 miles flown by the average Canadian last year.

China’s high total spending on international travel and its low average number of miles flown on international travel may show that while only a small percentage of China’s residents actually travel outside their homeland, those who do spend a lot of money don’t go that far. But there are reasons for China’s low average of miles travel on international trips. A small percentage of Chinese now have enough money to travel internationally, while the number of people who do travel outside of China is growing fast every year. Besides, a large percentage of Chinese people traveling abroad stay close to home.

However, as more and more Chinese gain the financial ability to travel internationally and as Chinese become more and more interested in visiting destinations farther and farther away from home, their spending on international travel and the average distances flown will both rise rapidly.

1. Why is it important to learn Chinese for the future work in travel industry?
A.Because being good at Chinese is a must for future work.
B.Because Chinese is most commonly used in travel industry.
C.Because.travel industry requires employees to learn Chinese.
D.Because China will probably be a big-spending nation in international travel.
2. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A.There is indeed great potential in Chinese travel market.
B.People from different countries have different preferred destinations.
C.Chinese people are more willing to travel abroad compared with Canadians.
D.People going on a journey around the world hate taking international planes.
3. In what countries may many Chinese people choose to travel at present?
A.North America.B.Developing countries.
C.Southeast Asia.D.European countries.
4. Which of the following words can best describe the future of Chinese people’s traveling abroad?
A.Hopeless.B.Bright.
C.Confusing.D.Unclear.
