文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了Grayson Barron开发了新泳池报警系统,在有人或有东西进入无人看管的泳池时会发出几种类型的警告,这对于不幸掉入水池的人来说是一大救星。

2 . It’s an all too common story: A young child walks off during a party and falls into a backyard pool. No one notices she’s missing——until it’s too late. When Grayson Barron learned of such a disaster in a friend’s neighborhood, the 18-year-old immediately jumped into problem-solving mode. The new pool alarm system he’s just developed sends out several types of warnings when someone or something splashes into an unguarded pool.

Grayson calls his floating system “The Buoy (浮标)”. A large splash will trigger its built-in sensors to send out a series of alerts——a flashing light, an alarm that sounds like a loud doorbell and a text to the owner’s mobile phone.

Grayson’s is not the first pool alarm, but the teen says others all have disadvantages. Some are very costly. Others can become stuck in corners of a pool. He wanted a low-cost option that was reliable (可靠的). Grayson 3-D printed the main part of his device, then attached sensors. He then equipped the device with a light, a speaker and a wireless network that can send texts. A battery, which is hooked up to solar panels, keeps the system charged for months.

While hard to design, the new system “is so easy to use,” says Grayson. “All I do is turn it on and throw it into a pool.” After that, he says, it just “does its thing”.

1. Why was a child falling into a pool mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.To remind the importance of safety.B.To prepare for the topic of the text.

2. What can you learn from the last paragraph?
A.Grayson’s pool alarm can work by itself after being turned on and thrown into the pool.
B.The system of Grayson’s pool alarm is out of control.
C.Grayson’s pool alarm must be operated by man.
D.Grayson’s pool alarm is easy to design and easy to use.
3. Which of the following is the disadvantage of Grayson’s pool alarm?
A.It is very expensive.B.It s easy to get stuck.
C.It easy to lose balance.D.It s difficult to design.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Teens’ Tech Will Send Alerts to Reduce Deaths
B.Grayson Barron Saved a Lot of Lives
C.Many People Are Drowned Every Year
D.Grayson Has Invented Much Device

5 . There is some good and bad news about vitamins and minerals. The good news is that intake(摄入)of certain vitamins is linked with a lower risk of early death. The bad news is that the link is seen only when those nutrients(营养) come from food, not supplements(营养品), according to a new study.

The study analyzed information from more than 27,000 adults in the US and found that people who eat up enough amounts of vitamin K or magnesium had a lower risk of death from any cause. In addition, people who consume enough levels of vitamin A, vitamin K, zinc or copper had a lower risk of death from heart disease. But when the researchers considered the source of these nutrients-food vs supplements-only nutrients from food were tied to a lower risk of death from any cause or heart disease.

The findings suggested that adequate nutrients intake from foods was connected with reduced mortality(死亡率), while over intake from supplements could be harmful. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends that people try to get their nutrients from foods by eating healthily. “Real food contains healthy things a pill can’t give us,” the academy says, “when we take a nutrient out of a food and concentrate it in a pill, it’s not quite the same thing.”

Still, people with certain diseases or conditions may not be able to get all the nutrients they need from food, and thus might need to take a supplement. For example, pregnant(怀孕的)women often need to take frolic acid or iron supplements to prevent birth shortcomings. People with certain food allergies(过敏) or digestive(消化的) conditions may also need to take supplements. People should speak with their doctors before taking supplements, the doctor recommends.

1. What is the key to reducing the risk of death according to the passage?
A.The nutrients from food.
B.The amounts of vitamin.
C.The condition of one’s body.
D.The balance between food and supplements.
2. Why should we take enough nutrients from food?
A.They help lower the risk of early death.
B.Their sources are rich and various.
C.They differ from those in supplements.
D.They are easier to take in than those from supplements.
3. What suggestions does the doctor give to pregnant women?
A.Making a thorough(遍及全部的)check.
B.Learn about the influence of birth faults.
C.Getting enough nutrients from food.
D.Consulting doctors before taking supplements.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Vitamins from food--longer life

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲年轻人和老一代对竖大拇指表情符号不同的理解以及原因分析。

9 . Sending a thumbs-up can be seen as passive aggressive(冒犯的), according to Gen Z (those born between 1995 and 2009) who say they feel attacked whenever it is used. Whether the chat is informal, between friends or at work the symbol appears to have a very different, ‘rude’ meaning for the younger generation.

A 24-year-old on Reddit summed up the Gen Z argument, saying it is best ‘never used in any situation’ as it is ‘hurtful’. “No one of my age in the office does it, but the Gen X (those born between 1966 and 1980) people always do it. Take me a bit to adjust and get it out of my head that it means they’re mad-at me,” he added. Other young people agreed it is bad form, especially at work where it can make the team appear unfriendly and not easygoing.

“My last workplace had a WhatsApp chat for our team to send information to each other on, and most of the people on there just replied with a thumbs up. I don’t know why but it seemed a little bit hostile to me,” one woman said. One Reddit user also said the thumbs up actually means that “I’ve read your message and have nothing to add and I hope and pray...all the people in this group chat have nothing to say on it too.”

Older workers appear confused by the reaction, saying they use the thumbs up in work-related chats to show “I agree” or “I understood and will follow.”

Part of the issue is that young people tend to use the thumbs-up in jokes. Barry Kennedy, 24, he said he only used it to communicate with older people like his parents or older colleagues. A survey of 2, 000 people conducted by Perspectus Global showed that a majority of people between the ages of 16 and 29 believe that you are “officially old” if you use thumbs-up or heart emoji.

1. Which of the following point is not the Gen Z’s understanding of the emoji thumbs-up?
A.Being rude.B.Being agreeable.
C.Being hurtful.D.Being unfriendly.
2. What does the underlined word “hostile” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Unfriendly and aggressive.B.Tough and difficult.
C.Unwanted and unacceptable.D.Strange and unusual.
3. Why can’t older workers understand the young’s reaction to the thumbs-up emoji?
A.Because of their poor communications kill.
B.Because of their being old with worse memory.
C.Because of their less communicating with the young.
D.Because of their different understanding of the emoji.
4. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.The Thumbs-up Emoji: Rejected by the younger generation
B.The Thumbs-up Emoji: Highly Welcomed by Old People
C.The Thumbs-up Emoji: A Sign of Generation Gap

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了近来美国越来越重视庆祝女性成就的情况。

10 . Every March, the country celebrates the achievements of women in American history. Even though these achievements go back a long way, most schools didn’t start focusing on women pioneers and their achievements until recently. Today, most schools teach kids about the contributions women have made to our country. How did this change come about?

On March 19, 1911, a German woman named Clara Zetkin organized the very first International Women’s Day. Inspired by American working women, the event took on the causes of peace in an effort to end World War I as well as women’s rights. However, people’s interest in International Women’s Day still dwindled over the years. It gained momentum (势头) again in the 1960’s when the women’s movement caused women to wonder why they weren’t included in the history books.

By the 1970s, more female historians began to look back at women’s contributions in history. In 1978, a California school district started Women’s History Week to promote the teaching of women’s history. School officials picked the week of March 8 to include International Women’s Day. It was so popular that, in 1981, Congress passed a resolution, making the week a celebration for the entire country. The concept of studying women’s history continued to grow in popularity. In 1987, a group of women asked Congress to expand the celebration. That same year. Congress declared the entire month of March National Women’s History Month.

Today, schools and communities across the country celebrate the month with special lessons and activities designed to teach the ways women have helped shape the US. The women who have worked hard to make Women’s History Month a reality would like to see women’s history studied all year, not just every March. In 1996, the National Women’s History Museum was founded. It is a commonweal (公益) organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating the various historic contributions of women. The organization is working with Congress to open a permanent (永久的) museum site in Washington D. C.
