1 . If you were just going by the 1993 film Jurassic Park (侏罗纪公园), you might think that the Dilophosaurus (双冠龙) was pretty fast. But was it fast enough to beat Usain Bolt in a 100-meter dash?
That’s the question that University of Toledo physicist Scott Lee posed to his students. Lee says, “I’m always looking for new and interesting things that will excite the students, so I try and bring these concepts into the classroom.”
Plenty of other scientists have been just as fascinated by the biomechanics (生物力学) of dinosaur movement. For example, scientists created a 3D reconstruction of a T-rex tail to calculate that the animal likely moved at just under 3 mph according to a paper published in 2021.
Lee points to the variety of approaches that researchers can use to model such predictions. “We have the bones from many dinosaurs; with the Dilophosaurus and T-rex, we have essentially complete skeletons, he says. “ By looking at modern animals, you can get an idea of how big the muscles were. Then you can calculate how big of a force you could apply to the legs of a dinosaur to... model how fast it would go.”
For many students just starting to learn about physics, the difference between speed and acceleration isn’t always intuitive (直观的). “They tend to think of that as being the same thing-if you accelerate fast, you’re going to go fast,” says Lee“. but they’re actually very separate concepts.”
In his class, Lee wanted to create a situation where the speeds between two subjects were roughly the same, but because the accelerations were different, so was the outcome. They ultimately concluded that Bolt would easily outrun Dilophosaurus. leaving it in the dust by two seconds.
As Lee emphasized to his class the key factor was indeed acceleration. Following Newton’s second law of motion, where acceleration is dependent upon an object’s mass (质量) and force, Bolt’s smaller size would give him an early leg up. Lee says, “The bigger something gets and its acceleration becomes less. Dilophosaurus is so much heavier than Bolt, so it accelerates a lot slower.”

2 . On June 15, the 100-day countdown to the Hangzhou Asian Games, the medal of the 19th Asian Games was released. The medal of the 19th Asian Games is named Shan Shui, which is another core element of the Asian Games, along with the official emblem (徽章) Tides Surging, mascots Congcong, Chenchen, Lianlian, color system Meeting the World and torch Eternal Flame. It is an important addition to the overall aesthetic (审美) of the event.
Shan Shui is characterized by the ceremonial jade (玉) Cong in the Liangzhu Culture(5,300BC-4,300BC). This square jade, integrated with a round medal, is truly unique and highly recognizable.
Shan Shui presents the geographical features of Hangzhou. By using prominent lines, the picture scroll of Hangzhou is outlined on the front side of the medal with misty hills on three sides and the city on one side, a rippling lake, and wavelike mountains beyond. The back side is shaped like a square seal, which means the athletes leave a beautiful mark on the Hangzhou Asian Games,
Shan Shui expresses the character of Hangzhou as the capital of ecological civilization, with natural landscape, clear water and green hills, creating invaluable assets, casting gold and silver medals.
Shan Shui shows the sportsmanship of climbing the heights. Reaching the top, one will become even higher. On the way to the summit, athletes strive hard, challenge themselves, and overcome one peak after another.
The medal will be made by painting, milling, trimming and polishing, gold and silver plating effect treatment, and protection treatment. The medal ribbon (绶带) will be hand-sewn on both sides using weave technology and environmentally friendly printing techniques. The bridge shaped buckle at the top of the ribbon highlights the Jiangnan characteristics of the water town and the bridge town. The linking method adopts the raw ear structure of the spring buckle shaft (弹簧扣轴) to fix the ribbon inside the medal.

3 . Sleep is always a theme we love to talk about. It is necessary for our bodies to be full of energy and minds to become fresh.
We hear all the time about needing to sleep for eight hours but that’s actually for an adult!
When you think about it, babies seem to sleep a lot. That’s because of all the wonderful things their bodies are doing while they are growing up. They are getting bigger, learning new things and their bodies need time to slow down. As we grow up, these things don’t stop but our bodies get used to the work.
A person in primary school might still need up to 12 hours of sleep a night! That sounds a lot, but think of all the wonderful things you do in a day and how hard it is sometimes to pay attention.
Also just a fun fact, did you know what animal needs the most sleep? A koala!
A.They can sleep up to 22 hours in the day. |
B.The younger a person is, the more sleep he needs. |
C.We need to close our eyes to stop some of the light. |
D.So we need less sleep than we did when we were young. |
E.It would also be difficult for the brain to go into a deep sleep. |
F.You might have no energy for sports when you haven’t had enough sleep. |
G.That’s why it’s so important to have a good diet and get enough sleep. |
4 . Is it shi(是) or si(斯) in the sentence “Thus when Heaven is about to confer a great office on any man(故天将降大任于是/斯人也)…”? Not long ago, people had a heated discussion online about this. Most people “clearly remember” that it’s si, while their childhood textbooks say it’s shi.
It shows how unreliable(不可靠的) our memory can be. According to US psychologist Faith Brynie, memories can be influenced by imagination, belief and time. Many studies have proven that “feeling certain” about a memory sometimes has nothing to do with the facts.
Attitudes and beliefs change our memory.
Scientists at Cornell University, US, told college students a story about a man who walked out without paying a restaurant bill. The first group was told that the man “liked to steal”. The second group was told that he left because he got an emergency(紧急的) phone call.
One week later the first group remembered a higher bill-10 to 25 percent more than the bill actually was. The second group remembered a lower bill. The study showed that how we expect or believe things to happen can distort(扭曲) our memories.
Remembering things that never happened
In another experiment(实验), people watched a film and were asked: “How fast was the white car going when it passed the barn(谷仓) while traveling along the country road?”Actually there was no barn in the film. But about 20 percent of the students said they had seen the barn. Northwestern University scientist Kenneth Paller said that parts of the brain for really seeing an object and imagining an object overlap(重叠). So imagination after getting a hint(暗示) could leave a memory trace(痕迹) in the brain.
Si or shi
In the case of si or shi, some people said that si sounds more like ancient Chinese. That’s why most people relate it to the ancient classic. On the Internet, the version(版本) of si is also more widespread than shi, giving people a wrong hint.
1. In the first experiment, the first group remembered a higher bill because ________.A.the students forgot the bill completely. |

A.Are you really sure? | B.Have you forgotten yet? |
C.What should be remembered? | D.How is the memory improved? |
5 . Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. They don’t act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, “I love you” is too luxurious (奢侈的) for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day is even more out of the question. And my father has a bad temper (脾气).
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt (被子). I silently sat down beside her and looked at her.
“Is there love between you and Dad?” I asked her in a very low voice.
My mother stopped her work and raised her head with surprise in her eyes. She didn’t answer immediately.
I was very worried because I thought I had hurt her. But at last I heard my mother say the following words.
“Lily,” she said, “look at this thread (线). Sometimes it appears, but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and durable (耐用的). If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere or anytime, but it’s really there. Love is inside.”
I listened carefully but I couldn’t understand her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly got sick seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month. When they returned from the hospital, they both looked very pale.
After they were back, every day in the morning and dusk (黄昏), my mother helped my father walk slowly on the country road. My father had never been so gentle. It seemed that it was their most harmonious (和谐的) period. The sun gently glistened (闪耀) among the leaves. All of these made up the most beautiful picture in the world.
The doctor had said my father would recover (恢复) in two months. But after two months he still couldn’t walk by himself. All of us were worried about him.
“Dad, how are you feeling now?” I asked him one day.
“Lily, don’t worry about me,” he said gently. “To tell you the truth, I just like walking with your mum.” Reading his eyes, I know he loves my mother deeply.
Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. But from this experience, I understand that love is just a thread in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.
1. Why does Lily sometimes doubt that there is no real love between her parents?A.Because they are very busy earning money. |
B.Because they don’t have enough money for love. |
C.Because her father is easy to lose his temper to her mother. |
D.Because she doesn’t see the thread in the quilt. |
A.Possible. | B.Impossible. | C.Necessary. | D.Unnecessary. |
A.The quilt story from her mother. | B.One-month stay in the hospital. |
C.The beautiful scenery of the country road. | D.The sickness her father suddenly got. |
A.We should understand our parents however old they are. |
B.Love is hidden in the life, but it really influences our life. |
C.We really need love because it makes our life harmonious. |
D.Love is so important to everyone that we must love everyone. |
6 . When she was just 8, Sammie Vance thought about a question. What breaks your heart? “For me, it’s seeing people who need a friend,” the seventh grader from Indiana, US. told People magazine. “I’ve been lonely myself, I don’t want others to feel that way.”
Soon after a summer camp. Vance learned about buddy benches(伙伴长椅). These benches are seats at a school playground. A lonely child can sit on it, which shows that he or she is in need of a friend.
She loved this idea. “This would be really cool.” Vance said. Then she got into action at once. She collected 725 kgs of bottle caps and found a factory to turn the caps into benches for her school. According to Vance, these benches cost much less than common park benches and are good for the environment.
Vance collected more for benches at other schools, too. She also made a website page for others to follow her journey and make bottle cap donations(捐赠). She was surprised that her small project had had an influence on people around the world. She even received bottle caps from Germany and Australia. But she has no plans of stopping. She said in an interview that even adults(成年人)can use a buddy bench because people at any age can feel lonely.
“I just look forward to making a difference.” she said, “and inspiring(激励)other people to make a difference.”
1. What makes Sammie Vance sad?A.Seeing homeless people. | B.Seeing hungry people. |
C.Seeing lonely people. | D.Seeing lying animals. |
A.Bottle caps. | B.Glass bottles. | C.Old clothes. | D.Old chairs. |
A.Make more friends to live a happy life. | B.Try to help others and make a difference. |
