2 . During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people under lockdown feel lonely and bored. “There is a loneliness epidemic,” said John Dattilo from Pennsylvania State University, US. So he, together with an international team of researchers, studied how to reduce loneliness and increase positive feelings during the pandemic.
According to their new study, reducing loneliness has something to do with doing enjoyable activities that require both concentration (注意力) and skill. When people are absorbed in what they are doing, they enter a state called “flow”, Dattilo explained. “Flow can be achieved by doing activities that we value and that requires us to concentrate fully to use our skills.”
To achieve a state of flow, there must be a balance between the challenge of the task and your skill level. For example, if you’re trying to create a complex (复杂的) computer program but your skill level is low, then you’re likely to feel stressed instead of achieving “flow”. On the contrary(相反地), if the task is too easy, then boredom will set in and “flow” will not appear, either. If you have artistic skills, for example, playing the piano or painting can lead to flow. So can things like skiing, writing and storytelling, depending on who you are.
“When we center a state of flow, we become focused, and we experience momentary enjoyment,” Dattilo said. “When we leave a state of flow, we are often surprised by how much time has passed.” However, watching television usually doesn’t help people enter flow, according to Dattilo, because there aren’t any challenges.
“People tend to thrive (茁壮成长) on healthy activities and challenge,” said Dattilo. “We hope this research will help people live fuller, happier, healthier lives”.

Cheating can happen in a lot of different ways. When people cheat,it’s not fair to other people, like the kids who studied for the test or who the true winners of a game were.
Many people like the action of cheating. In their opinion,it makes difficult things seem easy, like getting all the right answers on the test. But it doesn't solve the problem of not knowing the material and it won't help on the next test—unless the person cheats again.
Some people lose respect for cheaters and think less of them. The cheaters themselves may feel bad because they know they shouldn't get that good grade. And,if they get caught cheating, they will be in trouble at school, and maybe at home, too.
Some kids cheat because they're busy or lazy and they want to get good grades without spending the time studying.Other kids might feel like they can’t pass the test without cheating.Even when there seems to be a “good reason” for cheating, cheating isn’t a good idea.
If you were sick or upset about something the night before the day and couldn’t study,it would be better to talk with the teacher about this. And if you don’t have enough time to study for a test because of swim practice, you need to talk with your parents about how to balance swimming and school.A kid who thinks cheating is the only way to pass a test needs to talk with the teacher and his or her parents so they can find some solutions together.Talking about these problems and working them out will feel better than cheating.
1. What does the author think when kids cheat in class?A.It is unfair to other people. |

6 . BEIJING — The Chinese economy has shown positive signs of stabilizing (稳定), but it’s hard to judge what it will be next year, governor of China’s central bank said on Thursday.
Zhou Xiaochuan, governor of the People’s Bank of China, made the remarks on a panel discussion with delegates from the financial field to the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, which opened here on Thursday morning.
China’s economic momentum (推进力) will depend on not only domestic conditions, but also changes brought by the global financial crisis, said Zhou, who is also a CPC delegate to the national congress.
“It has become increasingly clear that the Chinese economy is now moving towards a better direction,” he said.
Due to the impact of the debt crisis in Europe, China’s economy began slowing this year. The Chinese economy expanded only 7. 4 percent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2012, marking a downturn for seven straight quarters, the National Bureau of Statistics of China said.
As the government adopted a series of fiscal (财政的) and monetary measures and speeded up the approvals of investment projects to spur the slowing economy, the domestic economy has stabilized since September with better indicators, Zhou said.
He said it’s hard to judge how the global financial crisis will continue to affect the Chinese economy because the spreading of the European debt crisis and the so-called fiscal cliff problem in the United States have increased uncertainties of the world economy.
“We need to monitor the effect on our economy of the monetary, easing policies launched recently by the United States and the European Union,” he said.
China is likely to maintain the policy continuity to some extent in 2013, but will leave enough room to make the policy targeted and flexible.
1. What is the attitude of Zhou Xiaochuan towards the Chinese economy at present?A.Doubtful. | B.Negative. | C.Optimistic. | D.Unknown. |
A.cause | B.expand | C.decrease. | D.encourage. |

7 . A woman whose social media searching for a nurse who cared for her almost 40 years ago went viral this week has found the mystery woman—in only 24 hours.
Amanda Scarpinati has wondered all her life about a nurse who helped her in the Albany Medical Center in 1977. At three months old, Scarpinati caught a cold, so her parents put her on a couch near a hot steam humidifier. She was in the living room by herself and rolled off the couch and landed right on the humidifier. She remained there for a full minute, suffering third degree burns on her face and hands.
Scarpinati spent seven weeks in the hospital and went through many surgeries during her youth as a result. All through elementary school, she was picked on and laughed at because of it. But one person Scarpinati knows treated her with only loving care—a nurse at the burn unit, whose photo Scarpinati had seen for years. “There is a picture of us together in an annual report for Albany Medical Center from that year. I don’t know how our family got hold of it, but I’ve always had the report and I would stare at the picture and wonder who she was, ever since I was a kid. But I’ve never had a name to go with the face,” Scarpinati says.
Scarpinati says she tried to locate the nurse 20 years ago, but with no luck. “I went to Albany Medical Center and they did some research but weren’t really able to find anything,” she says. “I just wanted to thank her.”
Nurse’s work is important to Scarpinati, whose mother is also a nurse. “What they do is truly amazing. Most of the time it’s not the doctors who have the beside manner, it’s the nurses that comfort you. I remember as a kid having one surgery and my mother couldn’t be there but a nurse was,” Scarpinati says.
