1 . I was born in a poor community on the north side of Boston, US, raised by a single mother who didn’t finish 3rd grade, lived each day on food stamps and attended what the media called “the most dysfunctional (功能失调的) public school district”. Not many people expected much of me, so I had to expect.

On my 13th birthday, I bought a poster of Harvard to hang in my room. Being at Harvard became what I dreamt about. Even if my electricity was cut off, I still woke up at 5:30, because I knew that my poster of Harvard was still hanging only two feet away from me.

Reminding myself of my goal each day made it easy to say no to the same choices I saw my peers making, because those paths wouldn’t have had me closer to my goal. Being poor could not take away my power to decide what I choose to do with my day. The poster gave me the courage to send emails to about 50 Harvard students to ask for feedback on my application essays; it gave me the energy to study just one more hour on my SATs when my friends were asleep; and it gave me the determination to submit just one more scholarship application when 180 others had already turned me down.

Every day, I could feel myself getting closer and closer to my goal as my writing got better, my SAT score increased, and my scholarship checks started coming in. Finally, an email arrived from Harvard. The first word was “Congratulations!” A month later, Harvard flew me up to visit the campus where for the first time I stepped onto my dreaming land.

Who you are today is the result of the decisions you made yesterday, and who you will be tomorrow will be the result of the choices you make today. Who do you want to be tomorrow?

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了2008年3月,作者决定停止律师事务所,在一年内环游世界,并且不打算坐飞机。讲述了旅途中的所见所闻以及感悟。

9 . One day in March 2008, I made a big decision. I decided to shut down my law practice and travel around the world in a year. What’s more, I would do it without taking any flights or making a single advance booking of any kind.

When I made this hare-brained plan, I didn’t mean to have an ever lasting life on the road. I was planning to come back after my year of travel, open a new law practice and write a hugely successful book about my adventure.

I set off on my adventure in December 2008 and I found travelling without using planes was not easy. Trying to travel around the world in 16 months made it even harder. Even so, traveling overland was the most amazing way to truly understand the immensity of our wonderful planet.

I took three overnight buses to travel 3,000 km through Argentina, from Ushuaia to the capital Buenos Aires. I would look out of the windows for hours on end at the completely unspoiled (未遭破坏的) plains (平原), as if humans had never touched it.

It took seven days and nights on trains to get from Moscow to Beijing, each day spent looking out of the windows for hours as the Siberian plains swept by. Sometimes, I wouldn’t see a village or a human being for ten hours. Later in my journey, it took me 22 days to get from New Zealand through the Panama Canal and back to Philadelphia to finish my round-the-world adventure.

It turned out that travelling with no advance booking was far less difficult than I had imagined. Pulling into a city on a bus with a backpack, looking in a guidebook for a few suggestions for accommodations and then finding an empty room was never much of a problem anywhere. It also kept me free and open about all my travel plans which is the advice I give to everyone who asks plan far less than you think you should.

1. What does the underlined word “hare-brained” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Clever.B.Secret.C.Crazy.D.Detailed.
2. What is an advantage of travelling around the world without using planes?
A.Lower travel costs.B.Longer stays in each country.
C.Better appreciation of the world.D.More favourable accommodations.
3. What can we infer about the author from the text?
A.He had a taste for adventure.B.He finished his global travel as planned.
C.He became a writer after his global travel.D.He planned his travel carefully in advance.
4. What did the author think of his around-the-world tour?
A.Challenging but satisfying.B.Dangerous but wonderful.
C.Boring and risky.D.Costly and tiring.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讨论了东方和西方的健身方式的不同,并指出选择锻炼方式可能并不在于哪一种更好,而在于哪一种更适合个人需求和价值观。

10 . Some people have argued that there are two ways to really think about health and exercise — an Eastern way and a Western way. When people think about Eastern ways, they think about how exercise and health are viewed in countries like China. When people think about Western ways, they often think about how health and exercise are viewed in countries like the US.

Eastern exercise programs come in many varieties. There are a number of different kinds of martial arts. Martial arts were originally made to help people protect themselves or attack someone. The movements in these kinds of exercise programs are usually very strong and sharp. There are slower and gentler forms of exercise, too. Such gentler martial arts take the person through a series of slow movements that are designed to help the whole body. Another kind of exercise involving slow movements is yoga. All of these kinds of exercise programs involve the body and the mind. The right kind of thinking and positive attitude are encouraged. In many Asian countries, people gather in parks to exercise together in the open air.

Western exercise programs come in a wide variety as well. People often take up walking or running. They may combine these activities with swimming or weight lifting. Such kinds of exercise are supposed to make your heart beat fast and make your body stronger. People often do these activities in a health club. Going to these health clubs can be very costly and some of the exercise programs require the use of special equipment to get into shape. Some people also enjoy joining health club s to take group exercise classes. But those who run tend to run alone in parks or on quiet streets.

Western exercise is usually focused on losing weight, getting healthy, or feeling good about yourself. It is not necessarily connected to certain ways of thinking, although trainers and doctors encourage people to have a positive attitude about exercising.

Maybe choosing an exercise approach is not about which one is better, but rather about choosing activities from both that work for you. In some places, it is not easy to go to the park to exercise with others. Some people cannot afford special equipment. The most important thing is to find an activity that you enjoy and exercise your way to better health.

1. Some types of Eastern exercise programs include _________.

2. What do Eastern exercise and Western exercise have in common according to the text?
A.They focus on losing weight.B.They are very strong and sharp.

4. Which of the following best shows the structure of the text?
