When Brantley Harrison and her family rescued a tiny, injured squirrel back, then released her back into the wild, they didn’t expect to ever see her again. Nine years later, however, little Bella, they called the squirrel Bella, still comes to visit them almost every day—as long as snacks are provided, of course.

As a baby, the terrible attack made by an owl (猫头鹰) left Bella near death, she was carefully taken in by the Greenville County, South Carolina family, and raised by them alongside three other squirrels named Larry, Curly, and Moe. Bella stayed with the Harrisons until she had healed successfully thanks to a regular diet of fruit, nuts, and baby food, and was ready to jump on the trees in the forest. The sweet squirrel never goes too far from her adopted home, though, and stops by to say hello whenever she can, despite how much time has passed.

“Bella sits right at the front door waiting for someone to notice she has come by for a visit. If no one notices her, she will jump over to the dining room window to wait for someone to see her,” Brantley told The Dodo. The little lady just isn’t ready to part with the family that succored her life. Whenever she stops by, she asks for nothing more than a handful of nuts.

What is the most amazing part? A few years after Bella’s original stay at the Harrison house, she found her way back to them with an injured foot—and a belly full of babies—spending another few months of recovering. “It was truly amazing to watch the baby I raised raise her own babies,” Brantley said. Bella now even has her own Instagram page, where her human family documents her adventures, with almost 4 thousand followers!

1. What happened after little Bella was injured by an owl? (No more than 10 words)

2. How did the Harrisons take care of little Bella? (No more than 15 words)

3. What does the underlined word in the third paragraph mean? (Only 1 word)

2 . Most people aren’t good at creative problem solving for two reasons: (1) They are not trained in how to be creative. (2) They don’t understand group strength well enough to harness(驾驭)their power to maximize group creativity.

A key element of creativity is applying existing knowledge to a new problem. The more people getting involved in solving it, the more knowledge there is to work on it. Unfortunately, research shows that the traditional brainstorming methods fail to achieve that goal. When groups get together to exchange ideas, they actually come up with fewer ideas overall than if they each had worked alone.

To fix this problem, you should consider the two stages of group problem-solving: divergence(分散)and convergence(集中). Divergence happens when the group considers as many different potential solutions as possible. Convergence happens when the various proposed solutions are evaluated and reduced to a smaller set of candidate solutions to the current problem.

The essential principle of group creativity is that individuals working alone diverge, whereas group members working together converge. In groups, once a member states a potential solution, that makes others think about the problem similarly. That is why groups working together diverge less than individuals working alone.

Therefore, be aware of when to diverge and when to converge. For example, early in the problem-solving process, have group members work alone to write down statements describing the problem. Then get them back to discuss their descriptions. The group discussion will lead everyone to accept one or a small number of these statements to work on—this is healthy convergence.

When starting to generate solutions, you again want divergence. Have people work alone to start. Then collect people’s initial ideas and send them around to others and allow the divergence to continue as everyone individually builds on the ideas of other members.

Finally, let the group discuss the resulting ideas. This discussion will gradually lead the group to converge on a small number of candidate solutions.

This simple method works effectively, because it respects what individuals and groups do best.

1. Research shows that the traditional brainstorming methods ______.
A.actually limit group creativity
B.greatly encourage group creativity
C.enable people to form more ideas together
D.prevent people’s involvement in the problems
2. According to Para. 4, when a member presents an idea, others tend to_____.
A.think the other way round
B.follow his way of thinking
C.be more confident in their own ideas
D.be less willing to share their own ideas
3. What should group members first do early in the problem-solving process?
A.Discuss the problem.B.Simplify the problem.
C.Put down group statements together.D.Write down their individual descriptions.
4. How can each group member make changes to his initial solution?
A.By adding in collected evidence.B.By reorganizing his own words.
C.By drawing on others’ ideas.D.By making his statement briefer.
5. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To advocate a way to make group thinking more effective.
B.To demonstrate the difficulty in organizing group thinking.
C.To highlight the differences between divergence and convergence.
D.To show the advantage of group thinking over individual thinking.

When I told my father that I was moving to Des Moines, Iowa, he told me about the only time he had been there. It was in the 1930s, when he was an editor of the literary magazine of Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas. He also worked as a professor at SMU, and there was a girl student in his class who suffered from a serious back disease. She couldn’t afford the operation because her family was poor.

Her mother ran a boarding house in Galveston, a seaside town near Houston, Texas. She was cleaning out the attic (阁楼) one day when she came across an old dusty manuscript (手稿). On its top page were the words, “By O. Henry”. It was a nice story, and she sent it to her daughter at SMU, who showed it to my father. My father had never read the story before, but it sounded like O. Henry, and he knew that O. Henry had once lived in Houston. So, it was possible that the famous author had gone to the beach and stayed in the Galveston boarding house, and had written the story there and left the manuscript behind by accident. My father visited an O. Henry expert at Columbia University in New York, who authenticated the story as O. Henry’s.

My father then set out to sell it. Eventually, he found himself in Des Moines, meeting with Gardner Cowles, a top editor at the Des Moines Register. Cowles loved the story and bought it on the spot. My father took the money to the girl. It was just enough for her to have the operation she so desperately needed.

My father never told me what the O. Henry story was about. But I doubt that it could have been better than his own story.

1. What did the author’s father do at SMU? (no more than 12 words)
______________________________________________________________________________
2. Why was O. Henry’s manuscript found in the attic? (no more than 20 words)
______________________________________________________________________________

4. Why did the author’s father set out to sell the manuscript? (no more than 10 words)

5. What do you think of the author’s intention of writing such a story of his father?

Learning outside of a classroom may still be a new thing for many people but not for Kamer ·Meli·Veseli, who’s completing his final year of high school that way. His family moved from Kosovo to Switzerland, so he’s doing his coursework remotely and will take a big test with all of his teachers at the end of the year. It’s the ideal arrangement for Meli since it allows him to manage his own schedule and pursue other interests in his free time. That’s where Spark and online learning come in.

Meli has always been a serious gamer, but he’s not just looking to have fun. He likes examining the technology behind his favorite games and is curious to understand how developers create the graphics, textures, and special effects. He really wanted to make his own games and actually did develop a couple on Android but wasn’t satisfied with the results.

Searching for online courses that could take his game to the next level, he found Spark, and it was “one of the happiest days of my life.”

But gaming isn’t the extent of Meli’s interests. He’s also a hopeful singer who’d always lacked the confidence to sing in public. Then he took courses on Spark and discovered exercises that could help him loosen and relax his throat and release his voice “10 times better in 10 minutes.” Now he plans for Switzerland’s version of the TV show “The Voice” in 2016! With Spark courses, Meli’s also brushing up on his drawing skills, which he picked up in his childhood. He finally created a perfect portrait of his older brother.

Wherever Meli’s dreams take him, he knows he’ll be able to find relevant courses on Spark: “The variety is unlimited — so many languages, all kinds of software, even things like meditation and cultural lessons. Whatever you want to learn, you’ll find it on Spark.”

1. According to the first paragraph, how does Spark influence Meli’s life? (no more than 10 words)

5 . In a classic episode of The Simpsons, Homer’s class reunion ends in shame when one of Homer’s guilty secrets is exposed: he never graduated from high school. To get his diploma, he must pass a science test. As he sits down to retake the exam, he holds one of his trademark dialogues with his brain. “All right, brain. You don’t like me and I don’t like you. But let’s just do this and I can get back to killing you with beer.”

Many a true word is spoken as a joke. Homer Simpson’s Everyman character really is an Everyman. For most people, engaging in the kind of effortful thinking that is required to pass a science test feels too much like hard work. It is so much easier to quit and let the brain’s autopilot take over.

And no wonder. Evolution has blessed the human brain with all kinds of mental shortcuts that make life manageable. If we had to think about every action or weigh up every decision, we would break down. As a result, certain ideas and modes of thinking come naturally to us, such as effortless thinking.

But at huge cost. Our mental shortcuts work fine at the level of individuals and small-scale societies, but in an increasingly interconnected and globalized world, they are a danger to society. Effortless thinking is at the root of many of the modern world’s most serious problems: terrorism, hatred, inequality and religious extremism. All are caused by people disengaging their critical thinking and going with their gut (非理性的) feeling.

Everybody is capable of gut feeling, but also of the critical thinking. Both thinking styles are needed to make the world go round. Unfortunately, the latter requires training that is unavailable or unappealing to many people.

One of the bright spots in 2017 was the start of a movement called the March For Science. Those who believe in the power of science need to keep on marching, or give more power to people who don’t much like their own brains — or other people’s.

1. What does the author want to convey through Homer’s story?
A.Feeling is very important.
B.Drinking beer is harmful to one’s brain.
C.High school seniors should work hard.
D.Most people hate effortful thinking like Homer.
2. How do you read between the lines of the underlined sentence according to the passage?
A.Most people would rather tell jokes than tell the truth.
B.Most people don’t want to toil through scientific tests.
C.Most people would love to have their brains controlled by a pilot.
D.Most people like Simpson’s ordinary character are willing to think simple.
3. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.Our mental shortcuts function well.
B.Effortless thinking is expensive for people.
C.Effortless thinking is dangerous to society.
D.People prefer effortless thinking to critical thinking.
4. What does the author think of critical thinking?
A.It makes the world go round.
B.It needs necessary training.
C.It works fine at the level of personal affairs.
D.It leads to the March For Science in 2017.
5. What is the best title for the text?
A.Critical Thinking Is Urgently Needed
B.Effortless Thinking Is Out of Date
C.We Need to March Towards Science
D.Thinking Contributes to Social Problems

6 . Lena could clearly remember the night she had to flee her home in Hungary. It was the beginning of the Second World War and her family needed to escape fast. She quickly packed a suitcase with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and her most prized possession — a beautiful silk scarf. Lena and her best friend, Monika, had persuaded their parents to buy them matching scarves, which they each wore tied around their neck as a symbol of their friendship. Lena had no idea that when she left for America that night, she would never return. Her family settled on the sunny west coast in California.

Lena kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Lena was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but her granddaughter reassured her, “Don’t worry, Grandma, nothing’s going to happen to your scarf. You’ll see. It is going to bring both of us luck today.” With that, Eliza kissed her grandmother on the cheek and left.

That afternoon, Eliza left the interview feeling confident that she had got the job. She decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. As she sat at her table, she felt someone staring at her. Sitting next to her was an elderly woman who could not take her eyes off her. “I’m sorry. Do I know you?” Eliza asked.

“I’m sorry, dear, but you remind me of someone I once knew,” the old woman replied in an accented voice. “My best friend looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like the one you’re wearing around your neck.” Eliza felt goose bumps go up her arms. She had heard stories of her grandmother’s best friend and knew the significance of the scarf. Could this be Monika, her grandmother’s childhood friend?

Eliza introduced herself and waited to hear the name of the other woman. “My name is Monika, dear. I’m originally from Hungary, but my family had to leave when I was 14 and I’ve been living here in California ever since.” Eliza could not believe it. She said, “Monika, would you mind going somewhere with me? I want to show you someone very special.” The elderly woman agreed and they left the restaurant together.

They walked the short distance to Lena’s home and rang the doorbell. When Lena opened the door, she was amazed to see her childhood friend standing in front of her. The scarf had indeed brought good luck.

1. Why did Lena and her family leave Hungary?
A.Because they intended to make a fortune in America.
B.Because they preferred to live on the sunny coast.
C.Because it was dangerous in their home at the war time.
D.Because they wanted to follow her best friend, Monika.
2. What can be inferred from Paragraphs 2 and 3?
A.Eliza went to the restaurant to meet Monika.B.Lena cherished the silk scarf very much.
C.A silk scarf is a symbol of good luck.D.Eliza celebrated with Lena in a restaurant.
3. Eliza felt goose bumps go up her arms because________.
A.the stranger’s stare made her scared

8 . I read somewhere that we spend a full third of our lives waiting. But where are we doing all of this waiting, and what does it mean to an impatient society like ours? To understand the issue, let’s take a look at three types of “waits”.

The very purest form of waiting is the Watched-Pot Wait. It is without doubt the most annoying of all. Take filling up the kitchen sink(洗碗池) as an example. There is absolutely nothing you can do while this is going on but keep both eyes fixed on the sink until it’s full. During these waits, the brain slips away from the body and wanders about until the water runs over the edge of the counter and onto your socks. This kind of wait makes the waiter helpless and mindless.

A cousin to the Watched-Pot Wait is the Forced Wait. This one requires a bit of discipline. Properly preparing packaged noodle soup required a Forced Wait. Directions are very specific. “Bring three cups of water to boil, add mix, simmer three minutes, remove from heat, let stand five minutes.”I have my doubts that anyone has actually followed the procedures strictly. After all, Forced Waiting requires patience.

Perhaps the most powerful type of waiting is the Lucky-Break Wait. This type of wait is unusual in that it is for the most part voluntary. Unlike the Forced Wait, which is also voluntary, waiting for your lucky break does not necessarily mean that it will happen.

Turning one’s life into a waiting game requires faith and hope, and is strictly for the optimists among us. On the surface it seems as ridiculous as following the directions on soup mixes, but the Lucky-Break Wait well serves those who are willing to do it. As long as one doesn’t come to rely on it, wishing for a few good things to happen never hurts anybody.

We certainly do spend a good deal of our time waiting. The next time you’re standing at the sink waiting for it to fill while cooking noodle soup that you’ll have to eat until a large bag of cash falls out of the sky, don’t be desperate. You’re probably just as busy as the next guy.

1. While doing a Watched-Pot Wait, we tend to ___________.
A.keep ourselves busy
B.get absent-minded
C.grow anxious
D.stay focused
2. What is the difference between the Forced Wait and the Watched-Pot Wait?\
A.The Forced Wait requires some self-control.
B.The Forced Wait makes people passive.
C.The Watched-Pot Wait needs directions.
D.The Watched-Pot Wait engages body and brain.
3. What can we learn about the Lucky-Break Wait?
A.It is less voluntary than the Forced Wait.
B.It doesn’t always bring the desired result.
C.It is more fruitful than the Forced Wait.
D.It doesn’t give people faith and hope.
4. What does the author advise us to do the next time we are waiting?
A.Take it seriously.
B.Don’t rely on others.
C.Do something else.
D.Don’t lose heart.
5. The author supports his view by _________.
A.exploring various causes of “waits”.
B.describing detailed processes of “waits”.
C.analyzing different categories of “waits”
D.revealing frustrating consequences of “waits”

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了在疫情影响下的世界,艺术为人们提供了应对危机和冲突的创造性思路。

10 . While the arts can't stop the COVID-19 virus or the social unrest we see in the world today, they can give us insight into the choices we make when moving through crises and chaos. The arts invite everyone to think in new ways.

We often experience works of art as something that's pleasing to our senses without a full understanding of the creative effort. Great art often shows us contradictions and crises, and we can learn a great deal from their resolutions (解决). Through our understanding of art, we can gain a deeper understanding of how we might overcome our own challenges. In understanding extremes of contrast, we can see the beauty in art with themes that are not simply pleasing for their magnificent features or qualities.

Beethoven offers a wonderful example of moving artfully through crises and chaos. He composed his Symphony No.9 as his hearing loss became more and more pronounced. The opening of the symphony seems to come out of nowhere, from near silence in the opening to a full expression of what many consider to be the joy of freedom and universal brotherhood with Schiller’s Ode to joy (欢乐颂). Beethoven appears to have created a work of art that not only freed him from his personal struggles, but one that also speaks to the joy of living together in peace and harmony.

Have a dialogue between the two opposing parts and you will find that they always start out fighting each other until we come to an appreciation of difference — a oneness of the two opposing forces. The arts offer many lessons that can help us gain the knowledge we need to move more confidently in today's competitive and uncertain environment. An openness to arts-based solutions will give you more control over your future.

1. What value does art have beyond pleasing people's senses?
A.It brings people inner peace.B.It contributes to problem-solving.
C.It reduces the possibility of crises.D.It deepens understanding of music.
2. What can we learn about Beethoven's Symphony No. 9?
A.It aims to show crises and chaos.B.It celebrates freedom and unity.
C.It opens with Schiller's Ode to Joy.D.It is quiet and peaceful throughout.
3. What was Beethoven's condition like when he wrote his Symphony No. 9?
A.He had almost gone deaf at the time.
B.He was going through a personal creative crisis.
C.He was enjoying the joy of freedom with his brothers.
D.He was considered as an example of symphonic composition.
4. What is the author's suggestion on dealing with conflicting forces?
A.Leaving things as they are.B.Making a choice between them.
C.Separating them from each other.D.Engaging them in a conversation.
5. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.How art can change people's lives.B.Essentials of Symphony No. 9.
C.Moving artfully through crises.D.Joy in the eyes of Beethoven.
