2 . Making Peace with Your Parents

As a teen, you’re going through big changes physically and mentally. Your interests are increasing.     1     Here is the challenge: Kids need to explore the world in new ways, and parents need to protect them from the dangers that are all out in that world. These conflicts can easily set off fireworks in otherwise calm houses. Sometimes conflicts can’t be avoided. But by paying attention to the building blocks of successful relationships, you can work towards making home a happy and healthy place for you and your parents.

For example, try to find a time to talk when your parents are not angry, tired, distracted or hungry. A good time to talk is when you’re all relaxed. Timing is everything. If the conversation begins to turn into an argument, you’d better calmly and coolly ask to stop the conversation for now.     2     Listen to what your parents are saying, and repeat it back to them. This shows them that you’re listening.     3     Respect is the building block of good communication. People who respect each other and care about each others’ feelings can disagree without getting things ugly.     4     How do you build trust? Trust comes by actually doing what you say you’re going to do. Some teens find that doing fun activities with their parents can improve their relationships. Sometimes we forget that parents are more than rule-maker—they’re interesting people who like to watch movies and go shopping—just like their teenagers!

What do you do if you are trying your best, but your relationship with your parents continues to be rocky?     5     You can find supportive adults, such as a teacher or a coach, who can lend an ear. Remember you can only change your own behavior. Your parents are the only ones who can change theirs.

A.You may consider seeking outside help.
B.And then you’ll be able to accept what your parents say.
C.You can pick it up again when everyone’s more relaxed.
D.Faced with the challenge, children don’t know what to do.
E.And your desire to take control of your own life is growing.
F.It also gives them a chance to clear things up if you’re not on the same page.
G.You are more likely to get along with your parents and have more independence if your parents believe in you.

3 . Secret codes (密码) keep messages private. Banks, companies, and government agencies use secret codes in doing business, especially when information is sent by computer.

People have used secret codes for thousands of years.     1    Code breaking never lags (落后) far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography.

There are three main types of cryptography.     2    For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels” spell out the hidden message “Meet me.”

3    You might represent each letter with a number, for example. Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we substitute a number for each letter, the message “Meet me” would read “13 5 5 20 13 5.”

A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book.     4    For example, “bridge” might stand for “meet” and “out” might stand for “me.” The message “Bridge out” would actually mean “Meet me.”     5    However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently.

A.It is very hard to break a code without the code book.
B.In any language, some letters are used more than others.
C.Only people who know the keyword can read the message.
D.As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them.
E.You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out.
F.With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words.
G.Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet.

8 . I am trying to muster (鼓起) the courage to toss away my mobile phone to enjoy a more peaceful and ring-free life.

Can you imagine not having your mobile phone? In our high-tech, in-a-hurry age, a cell-free life is a hard concept to swallow. Our mobile phones can now access the Internet, and many people feel the need to express their every thought on their blog pages. If I gave up my cellphone, people would think I was mad.

I wish I had the strength to toss away my technology. I have an office phone, a home phone, an email and if people want to contact me, they can. If I’m out, people can leave a message. Do they really need to find me 24/7? However, I’m a bit like Frodo in the movie Lord of the Rings. The power of the ring is too strong and I can’t let it go.

Mobile phones have become necessary tools in our busy life. For most people, they hold all contacts and many of us don’t write up address books any more. The latest phones carry our music, pictures, movies and everything else. We feel lost without this device and when we do misplace it, we feel cut off from our fellow.

“Where have you been?” said a friend, who saw me a week after I lost my cellphone, “I tried calling you, but you disappeared. You disappeared off the face of the Earth.” See, when you don’t have a mobile phone, you don’t exist.

I’m not really going to toss my mobile phone away, in fact. We humans are such social animals and mobile phones serve us well. So in 2009, I’ve decided not to serve my mobile phone. Like all machines, I can always turn it off.

1. What does the underlined phrase “toss away” mean?
A.give awayB.get awayC.break awayD.throw away
2. The writer mentions Frodo to________.
A.show it is difficult to get rid of the mobile phone
B.show how much he likes Frodo
C.suggest a cell-free life is what he wants
D.introduce a film character to us
3. What do we know about mobile phones in the 4th paragraph?
A.Mobile phones can do anything for us.
B.Mobile phones have become very important in our life.
C.We could not live without mobile phones.
D.We would be cut off by our fellow without mobile phones.
4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The writer is not really going to toss his mobile phone away.
B.When you don’t have a mobile phone, you don’t exist.
C.The writer decides not to serve his mobile phone.
D.We humans can control ourselves and machines.

9 . Banks view online banking as a powerful “value-added” tool to attract and keep new customers while helping to eliminate costly paper handling or teller(出纳员)interactions in an increasingly competitive banking environment .

Today, most large national banks, many local banks and credit unions offer some form of online banking, variously known as PC banking, home banking, electronic banking or Internet banking. Online banks are sometimes referred to as “brick-to-click” banks, both to tell them from “brick-to-mortar” banks that haven’t yet offered online banking, as well as from “virtual”(虚拟)banks that have no physical branches or tellers whatsoever.

The challenge(挑战)for the banking industry has been to design this new service channel in such a way that its customers will readily learn to use and trust it. Most of the large banks can now offer fully safe, fully functional(功能的)online banking for free or for a small cost. As more banks succeed online and more customers use their sites, fully functional online banking will likely become as commonplace as automated teller machines (ATM).

Online banking has a lot of advantages. Unlike your corner bank, online banking sites never close; they’re at hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and they’re a mouse click away. If you’re out of state or even out of the country when a money problem appears, you can log on instantly to your online bank and take care of business. Online bank sites generally carry out and confirm (确认)deals at or quicker than ATM processing speeds. Many online banking sites now offer fashionable tools to help you manage all of your valuable items more effectively.

C.a “brick-to-mortar” bank is no better than a virtual one
D.customers can deal with their banking by a mouse click
4. What would be the best title for this text ?
