2 . When high school student Katie Shipley was born with a serious brain disease, doctors said she wouldn't live to go to school.

Now, Katie is not only about to graduate from Southridge High School in Oregon, but she was also named the school's prom (高中毕业舞会) queen.

Knowing Katie's wishes for prom queen, her friend Courtney Travis began reaching out to find her the prom king she needed to make her a queen. Courtney found Michael Parks, who also thought it was a great idea.

“I really got to know Shipley,” said Michael. “When you take the time to get to know other people, it really gives you a great chance to live for more than yourself.”

Courtney took a picture of the couple together and put it on her Twitter, explaining their plans for the prom. “It became very popular in the school,” she said.

Their efforts paid off, and Katie was very excited to be named prom queen.

On the day of the prom, Katie wore a very beautiful dress. Her grandmother, Joan Fraley, who also went to the prom, said the night will stay with her always.

Katie repeated that feeling.

“I just want to say thank you to my friends for all they did for me. I love you all.”

Todd Corsetti, the principal (校长) at Southridge High School said that seeing Katie as prom queen and the energy and help of his students is one of his “proudest moments.”

3 . Although most hitchhikers (搭便车的人) are people, passers-by tend to ignore them because they are cautious about giving rides to strangers. But what will they do if they come across a hitchhiking robot? Will they take it to its destination or will they just leave the helpless machine by the wayside?

That is the answer Canadian professors, David Harris Smith and Frauke Zeller, who study the relationship between humans and technology, are seeking for after they came up with the idea of building a hitchhiking robot.

HitchBOT is built with cheap household items. Thanks to a PC tablet, GPS tracker and camera, hitchBOT not only can send its thoughts and pictures to the general public, but also can answer general questions and keep drivers entertained with small talks. The smart robot is even able to quote interesting facts about the areas it has passed through.

Not surprisingly, many people are doubtful about hitchBOT’s ability. Most people think the cute robot will be damaged by someone. Actually, they are all wrong. The robot hitchhiked all the way from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Victoria, British Columbia, a distance of 3,700 miles. It was first picked up on July 27th by an elderly couple. It not only reached its destination on August 21st, but also had some amazing adventures along the way. It visited national parks, went fishing, went camping, and even attended a wedding where it experienced its first dance and interrupted the bride’s speech.

In addition to helping it get to its destination, its Canadian fans have gone out to ensure its safety from covering the robot with a plastic cape (披肩) to help keep it dry to ensuring that it stays healthy with motor oil.

1. Why is the hitchhiking robot built?
A.To help passers-by reach their destinations.
B.To find out how people might react to it.
C.To see if it will give rides to strangers.
D.To entertain drivers on their way.

3. How long did it take the hitchBOT to reach its destination?
A.Nearly a month.B.Over one month.
C.Two months.D.One week.
4. What can we learn about the hitchBOT?
A.It was ignored by an elderly couple.
B.It didn’t meet with any danger along the way.
C.It experienced a long and amazing journey.
D.It will be put into the market quickly.

4 . When you come to London for a trip, it's best to plan a day out so as to maximize(最大化)the number of things yon can see. Time permitting,we can offer advice by e-mail if there's anything you particularly want to see.

If you are only in London for a day, a weekend or a week, use our SHORT STAY pages where we show you how to fill as much into your days as possible.

The best season to come is late Summer or Autumn —— recently we have been having Indian Summers (秋季的小阳春天气)from mid-September to the end of October with clear blue skies and 20 degree temperatures. Finally the weather breaks as the storm fronts move in off the Atlantic, then clears up for Christmas. February to April can be terrible, and the weather is very unpredictable. Ask the Meteorological office here for facts and figures but they are so often wrong.

When it's raining there are plenty of museums and galleries to visit —— and the tube(地铁)system is generally very good outside of rush hour.

It's best for you to be near a tube station when choosing a hotel, because buses can be slow and unreliable(不可靠的)and taxis expensive. 5 . There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved.

I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly relish the long train journey and had brought along a dozen magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sighed and sat down to read my Economics.

It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive; I decided to wave back.

From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.

The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful. When my uncle arrived with a smile, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug (拥抱). I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his weather-beaten face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.

I looked forward to the return journey.

1. The author expected the train trip to be _____.
A.adventurousB.pleasant
C.excitingD.boring

C.The crowds of people in the streets.D.The simple lunch served on the train.
3. Which of the following words can best take the place of the word “relish” in the second paragraph?
A.chooseB.enjoy
C.prepare forD.carry on
4. What can we learn from the story?
A.Comfort in traveling by train.B.Pleasure of living in the country.
C.Reading gives people delight.D.Smiles brighten people up.

6 . Mobile phones are one of the most useful inventions of the last 50 years, but not everything that is said about them is good. Mobiles are frequently blamed for a number of things, from thumb injuries and headaches to house fires.     1

The theory is that the bees navigation (导航) systems are damaged by the radiation that is given off by mobile phones. Bees have a built-in system a bit like GPS and this helps them find their way back to their hive. But recently, thousands of bees have failed to find their way home.     2

The problem was first noticed by beekeepers in America and is a lot more complicated than it at first seems. The important thing about bees is that most of the crops in many countries of the world are pollinated (授粉) by them.     3     Many beekeepers in America and Europe have reported losing between 50 and 70 percent of their bees. Jim Piper, a London beekeeper, was recently asked how the problem was affecting him. “My business has been ruined by this,” he explained, “twenty-nine of my forty hives are now empty.”

4     However, the fact that bees are disappearing in very large numbers is real. And we can’t manage without them. Einstein said that if all our bees disappeared, man would only live for four more years!     5     If the mobile phone theory is correct, we need to do something about it immediately—before it’s too late.

A.Bees are losing their way.
B.Nobody has proved the theory is true.
C.More evidence is provided to support the theory.
D.It is believed they are dying far from their hives.
E.Without bees, the crops can’t continue to grow.
F.The situation needs to be evaluated by the world’s best scientists.
G.One theory even blames mobile phones for the disappearance of bees.

7 . Every animal sleeps, but the reason for this has remained foggy. When lab rats are not allowed to sleep, they die within a month.     1

One idea is that sleep helps us strengthen new memories.     2     We   know that, while awake, fresh memories are recorded by reinforcing (加强) connections between brain cells, but the memory processes that take place while we sleep have been unclear.
Support is growing for a theory that sleep evolved so that connections between neurons(神经元) in the brain can be weakened overnight, making room for fresh memories to form the next day.       3

Now we have the most direct evidence yet that he is right.     4    The synapses in the mice taken at the end of a period of sleep were 18 per cent smaller than those taken before sleep, showing that the connections between neurons weaken while sleeping.

If Tononi’s theory is right, it would explain why, when we miss a night’s, we find it harder the next day to concentrate and learn new information — our brains may have smaller room for new experiences.

Their research also suggests how we may build lasting memories over time even though the synapses become thinner. The team discovered that some synapses seem to be protected and stayed the same size.     5     “You keep what matters,” Tononi says.

A.We should also try to sleep well the night before.
B.It’s as if the brain is preserving its most important memories.
C.Similarly, when people go for a few days without sleeping, they get sick.
D.The processes take place to stop our brains becoming loaded with memories.
E.That’s why students do better in tests if they get a chance to sleep after learning.
F.“Sleep is the price we pay for learning,” says Giulio Tononi, who developed the idea.
G.Tononi’s team measured the size of these connections, or synapses, in the brains of 12 mice.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要讲述关于男女对压力不同反应的研究。
10 .

Researchers in the psychology department at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) have discovered a major difference in the way men and women respond to stress. This difference may explain why men are more likely to suffer from stress related disorders.

Until now, psychological research has maintained that both men and women have the same “fightorflight” reaction to stress. In other words, individuals either react with aggressive behavior, such as verbal or physical conflict (“fight”), or they react by withdrawing from the stressful situation (“flight”). However, the UCLA research team found that men and women have quite different biological and behavioral responses to stress. While men often react to stress in the fightorflight response, women often have another kind of reaction which could be called “tend and befriend.” That is, they often react to stressful conditions by protecting and nurturing their young (“tend”), and by looking for social contact and support from others—especially other females (“befriend”).

Scientists have long known that in the fightorflight reaction to stress, an important role is played by certain hormones(激素) released by the body. The UCLA research team suggests that the female tendorbefriend response is also based on a hormone. This hormone, called oxytocin, has been studied in the context of childbirth, but now it is being studied for its role in the response of both men and women to stress. The principal investigator, Dr. Shelley E. Taylor, explained that “animals and people with high levels of oxytocin are calmer, more relaxed, more social, and less anxious.” While men also secrete(分泌) oxytocin, its effects are reduced by male hormones.

In terms of everyday behavior, the UCLA study found that women are far more likely than men to seek social contact when they are feeling stressed. They may phone relatives or friends, or ask directions if they are lost.

The study also showed how fathers and mothers responded differently when they came home to their family after a stressful day at work. The typical father wanted to be left alone to enjoy some peace and quiet. For a typical mother, coping with a bad day at work meant focusing her attention on her children and their needs.

The differences in responding to stress may explain the fact that women have lower frequency of stressrelated disorders such as high blood pressure or aggressive behavior. The tendandbefriend regulatory(调节的) system may protect women against stress, and this may explain why women on average live longer than men.

1. The UCLA study shows that in response to stress, men are more likely than women to ______.
A.turn to friends for help
B.solve a conflict calmly
C.find an escape from reality
D.seek comfort from children
2. Which of the following is true about oxytocin according to the passage?
A.Men have the same level of oxytocin as women do.
B.Oxytocin used to be studied in both men and women.
C.Both animals and people have high levels of oxytocin.
D.Oxytocin has more of an effect on women than on men.
3. What can be learned from the passage?
A.Male hormones help build up the body’s resistance to stress.
B.In a family a mother cares more about children than a father does.
C.Biological differences lead to different behavioral responses to stress.
D.The UCLA study was designed to confirm previous research findings.
4. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A.How men and women get over stress
B.How men and women suffer from stress
