1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Peter loved to shop used articles. Almost a month ago, he bought a popular word game that used little pieces of wood with different letters on them. As he was purchasing it, the salesgirl said, “Uh, look, the game box hasn’t even been opened yet. That might be worth some money.”

Peter examined the box carefully, and, sure enough, it was completely covered in factory-sealed plastics. That is to say, it was completely new. And he saw a date of 1973 on the back of the box.

“You should put that up for auction (拍卖) on the Internet and I bet there will be a surprise waiting for you,” the salesgirl said.

“Yes, you are right. People like something rare,” Peter agreed. “I can’t imagine there being many unopened boxes of this game around 40 years later.”

“Don’t forget to share with me the good news, if you sell it,” the salesgirl smiled.

“No problem,” Peter said.

After he got home, Peter went online to several auction websites looking for his game. But he couldn’t find it. Then he typed in the name of the word game and hit search. The search result was 543 websites containing information about the changes of the game. Over the years, the game had been produced using letters in different sizes and game boards in different colors. He also found some lists of game fans looking for various versions of the game. Peter emailed some of them, telling them what he had.

Two weeks later, Peter went back to the shop.

“Hello. Do you still remember the unopened word game?”

The salesgirl looked at him for a second, then recognized him and said, “Oh, hi! Any good news?”

“Yes, I’ve got something for you,” Peter said. “I sold the game and made $1,000. Thank you for your suggestion.” He handed her three $100 bills.

“Wow! How amazing!” the salesgirl cried out. “Thank you. I never expected it.”

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The Greatest Thanksgiving

“Are you going grocery shopping today?” my husband, Roy asked when I picked up the telephone.

“I plan to,” I answered.

Thanksgiving was only a couple days away. Everyone in our family would be coming to our house. My funds were limited, therefore my box of coupons (优惠券) awaited me in the car. I knew I had to be creative in my shopping that day. I had to stretch every dollar.

For a few seconds, Roy sat silently on the other end of the line. “Why do you ask?” I uttered, fearing what he might say.

“Nancy, there’s a family with a half dozen kids that will not have anything to eat for Thanksgiving. The little one is only five years old. While you’re at the store, could you possibly buy something for them?” Roy’s words echoed in my heart. My head began to spin (眩晕)thinking about the fifty dollars I had reserved for our family’ s Thanks giving dinner.

In the back of my mind I counted the hungry guests who would be coming to our house for dinner. I put my head down on my desk, already feeling defeated.

There’s no way possible, I thought. But the sympathy I heard in my husband’s voice struck a nerve inside me.

“Sure.” I replied.

I finished my work and prayed all the way to the nearest grocery store.

The turkeys were indeed on sale—29 cents a pound, but I discovered one big problem. When I read the sign posted on the freezer door, my heart sank. “Limit one.”

“But I need two,” I uttered to myself, I decided to find the manager. I explained the problem. He made an exception.

After tossing two turkeys in the cart, I began my shopping. It was amazing how many buy-one-get-one-free items were being featured that day. In addition, I had all the right coupons to get exactly what both families needed for a hearty Thanks giving dinner. I held my breath while the cashier rang up my groceries.

To my surprise, I had enough money. I was even able to purchase a package of cookies for the five-year-old who had stolen my heart, even though I had never met her.

4 . 阅读下面短文, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的故事。

Michael was a 13-year-old boy who was very honest and diligent. Recently, he had transferred (转学) to another school, so he had no friends in the new school yet. On Monday morning, he was nearly late for school. The night before, his family attended his cousin’s wedding and reached home late, which was why he couldn’t get up on time as usual.

At school, Michael could not pay attention to anything but waited for the bell to ring so that he could buy something to eat. The moment the bell rang, he quickly opened his schoolbag to find his money, but just then he remembered that he had left for school in a hurry in the morning and forgotten to take money. He looked under his books, hoping to find some money but there was nothing.

Not knowing what to do, he walked out of the classroom and sat on a bench in front of the canteen. He saw a few of his classmates there, among whom was Steven. He was one of the richest kids in his class, but he was a very arrogant (傲慢的) boy who thought everyone else was a loser. But as Michael was new, he didn’t know much about Steven.

When he went towards Steven and asked if he could borrow some money for his lunch, Steven laughed a lot and said, “I knew you were a loser, maybe a beggar?” Steven laughed out so loud that other kids also heard and made fun of the situation. He didn’t answer Steven, and slowly walked back towards an empty bench.

When he reached the bench, he noticed something lying near it. It was a wallet. He picked it up and recognized it as Steven’s, as he remembered Steven showing it to his friends and telling that his uncle bought it for him from the UK. There was quite a lot of money inside for a kid.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.

“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”

Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.

“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.

“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.

Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!”

Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought.

After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribusion” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-O-N-T-R-I-B-U-S-I-O-N,” he whispered. He spelled it wrong.

“What am I to do?” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I’m a master at spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I’ll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example for telling a lie.”

Staring at the full marks written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.”

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I look at spiders and butterflies. I watch caterpillars (毛毛虫) and moths (飞蛾). Sometimes I think I’m the only one who notices these things. But if it hadn’t been for a crowded cafeteria, I wouldn’t have ever noticed Valeri. After all, I wasn’t looking for new friends.

Valeri was a new student. She walked to class with her books huddled against her chest and her head down. She talked only when the teacher asked her a question. After a month at our school, she hadn’t made any friend. If you asked who she was, you’d get a response like this, “She’s in my PE class, I can’t remember her name.”

One day at lunch, I had nowhere to sit. Most tables were full, my friends scattered among them. But Valeri sat alone, book in hand, I walked over to her.

“May I sit here?” I asked.

“Sure,” she said.

The cafeteria was noisy, but silence hung between us. Valeri didn’t seem to mind, but it drove me crazy. I searched my mind for things to say.

“So,” I said, “is that a good book?” Valeri gave me a small nod and went back to reading. “What’s it about?” I asked, after several more annoying seconds of silence. She looked at me, her eyes sparkling.

“Well, it’s called Eragon, and it’s about a dragon! This boy, Eragon, finds this dragon egg when he goes hunting one day. He thinks it’s a rock! The egg hatches and Eragon hides the dragon from his cousin and uncle until it gets too big.

“That sounds cool,” I said. I was about to ask her another question, but the bell rang.

“See you later.

“Yeah,” she said, “see you later.”

A couple of days later, I spotted Valeri looking for a place to sit at lunch.

“Valeri, come here.” I pointed to an empty chair.

She sat down and pulled out her book. Everyone was talking about next week’s talent show in the auditorium (会堂). “So, what are you going to do for the show?” My friend Erin asked my friend Kelly.

“Oh, I don’t know, probably nothing,” Kelly sighed. “What are you doing?” She pointed to Valeri.

“Oh.” Valeri put her book down. “I don’t know. Maybe something special for the show.”

The week flew by before I knew it.

Last year during the year-end holidays, I had an opportunity to participate in a Youth Camp organized by the Boy Scouts Association of my school. Since it was the first camp that I had ever taken part in, I really looked forward to it.

The camp was located in a field by a river. It was on the first day of the camp that I met Leo. He had the body size of a bear. During the lunch hour, all the campers queued up (排队) to get their food. After getting my share, I was looking for a suitable spot to sit down and enjoy my lunch when Le or an into me, spilling (洒) soup on me. Instead of apologizing, Leo laughed at me. “Don’t you think you should apologize to me, clumsy (笨拙的) bear?” It old him off as I was really annoyed.

“Apologize? It was only a minor accident. By the way, how could you call me a clumsy bear?” Leo said.

I ignored him.

On the second day, Leo was late for roll call. As a consequence, he was punished and had to do push-ups.

“It serves you right. You should have apologized to me,” I told Leo after roll call.

In the afternoon, all of the campers went canoeing (划艇) on the river. As it was my first experience, I rolled my canoe over. Leo laughed at me loudly, remarking what a terrible canoeist I was. Very much embarrassed and angry, I swam towards his canoe. Fortunately, some other campers managed to hold me back before I did something I’d regret. We went jungle exploring on the afternoon of the third day. While carrying out the activity, I injured my ankle accidentally and got left behind. Though the pain was terrible, I kept walking since I did not want to be left too far behind. While I was crossing a narrow bridge, I lost my balance and fell down into a ditch (沟). Due to my foot injury and the depth of the ditch, I faced a lot of difficulty getting out.

“Why are we bringing groceries for Mrs. Killinger?” Bobby asked his mother, Anna, as they walked back from the supermarket with a few extra bags for their elderly neighbor. He enjoyed helping his mother with these tasks, but they had never bought anything for any neighbor before.

“Honey, Mrs. Killinger is now having trouble walking around, so I offered to bring some things from the market,” Anna explained as they climbed up the wooden steps to Mrs. Killinger’s house and rang the doorbell.

“Ok, but she could get a wheelchair and move around,” the boy commented as if it was the most straightforward solution in the world.

“You know, Bobby. Mrs. Killinger doesn’t have the money to buy one right now.

They can get expensive.”   Anna explained, and Bobby pursed his lips in thought.

Mrs.Killinger answered the door, smiled, and invited them for some coffee and cookies. Bobby noticed how slowly she moved, and an idea formed in his mind. He told the older woman and his mother all about it, and they grinned at him indulgently (宽容地笑).Neither of them thought Bobby would do it.

That’s why Anna was surprised the following day when Bobby had made several ads. “Mom, can you add your phone number here, so people can call me with work?”

“Oh, honey. This is very sweet. But I don’t know if it’ll be enough to raise the money she needs to buy a wheelchair,” Anna explained. She loved that her son had such a big heart, but he didn’t want him to be heartbroken if no one called or he couldn’t raise the money.

“Well,at least,I can say that I tried to help,” Bobby chirped (欢快地说)with his bright smile and eager eyes. Anna nodded and added her phone number to the ads. In his ad, Bobby offered his “services” which included helping with shopping, mowing lawns, keeping company, and walking dogs. He also left the price of his services, which made Anna smile. Sam was a junior high school student. He lived in a community in Charlotte and usually had little exposure to country life. So much of what he knew about plants came from text-books. Sam was a kind-hearted person. He longed for a chance to explore nature and he wanted to do his part to beautify the world.

Finally, the opportunity came. On Arbor Day (植树节), his class organized a trip to a local village to plant trees. Sam was excited about it and couldn’t wait to tell his mom the good news. So the next day, Sam and his mom went to buy some tools for planting trees, including a shovel(铲), a bucket, gloves and so on.

On the day of the event, Sam and his classmates arrived early at the starting point. It was a beautiful day and everyone looked particularly happy. With the tools in hand, Sam got into the bus with everyone else and headed off to their destination.

As soon as they reached the village, all the students were divided into three teams by their teacher. One team was responsible for planting the trees, one team for shovelling the soil and one team for watering the trees. At the teacher’s command, everyone started to do their job.

However, it was the first time that many of the students had taken part in planting trees, so they had no idea about how to start. Of course, Sam was one of them. Fortunately, their teacher was a middle-aged man from the countryside who had some knowledge of planting trees. In order to set an example to the students, the teacher started to plant trees himself. After watching the teacher plant the trees, everyone also became busy. Before long, they planted hundreds of trees. Sam watched very carefully, not wanting to miss any of the details. Finally, Sam learned how to plant trees by himself and felt happy.
