1 . 阅读下面文章,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一个完整短文,续写词数应为150左右。

The medal was my grandfather’s Purple Heart: he earned it in a war as a soldier. It was very precious to him. The Purple Heart is only awarded to the soldiers who have been wounded when fighting against enemies in a war. It looks as it is named: a purple ribbon with a heart-shaped medal. Only on special occasions would he take it out. Every time I held the medal, my grandfather would tell me stories about it and how he was awarded it. Though I heard his story thousands of times, I was still absorbed by his words, hoping someday I could share it with more people.

The opportunity came. With our annual Show and Tell competition approaching, I finally got a proper reason to persuade myself to “borrow” my grandfather’s treasure temporarily. I had no choice but to do it because I was told the Purple Heart was not allowed to be taken out. Since I knew where my grandfather kept it, I took the medal from its box without being noticed. Nervous but determined, I held it in my hand and the medal was on its way to school with me.

After enjoying other students’ performances, I knew I would be the winner for sure. It was my turn. The moment I showed it to the class, everyone was very interested in my grandfather’s medal. None of them had ever seen one before. I was proud to tell my classmates about how my grandfather got his medal and explain to them what the medal was for. Everything went perfectly as I expected. I won! But I knew this didn’t belong to me alone: it belonged to my grandfather.

Later, it was PE lesson. I thought I should carry this medal for safety, so I kept it in my pocket and ran to the playground. Having won the competition, I was extremely excited. I pushed the medal out of my mind. It was the happiest lesson I had ever had until I accidentally fell.

Paragraph 1:
When I picked myself up, I put a trembling hand into my pocket: empty!

Paragraph 2:
At home, with the medal in my sweating hand, I apologized to my grandfather for taking it.

Ann loves dogs, but she doesn’t have time to keep even one. Her husband died from an accident, leaving little money but a 10-year-old son, Jack, who was recovering from a heart operation. She had to work all day to support the whole family. One morning, Ann found a lost dog wandering around the local school. She waited there for half an hour but nobody came back to look for it. She had no choice but to take it home and asked her sons to keep an eye on the dog on the day while she was working.

Ann took photos of the dog and printed off 400 FOUND fliers as soon as she came back from work. After a quick supper , Ann, with Jack went out and put them in mailboxes. The next day, Ann went to the dollar store and bought some pet supplies, asking the boy to look after it for another day, and she hoped it would be the last day. She didn’t forget to warn her son not to fall in love with the dog, for they had no money or time.

Four days later no one called to claim, so Ann’s family was still looking after the dog, whom they had started to call Riley. One day when she arrived home from work, the dog barked madly at her and dashed into the boy’s room where Ann found Jack suffering from a heart attack.

“If you had come to me ten minutes later,” the doctor said, “Jack would have not been saved.”

Still no one had called to claim the dog, and it had been the best friend of her son. Ann decided to keep it, although she knew it would bring so much difficulty.

Ever since she was a little girl, Sally had wanted to skydive from a plane. So, when her 40th birthday arrived, she was surprised and pleased when her children presented her with a gift certificate from the local skydiving center.

“Thanks, kids. You’ve made my dream come true,” she said.

The big day came, and Sally arrived at the skydiving center early in the morning. “First, we’re going to go through some safety information,” the instructor told Sally and the other customers. “Safety is the most important part of skydiving,” the instructor continued. “This parachute is what will keep you alive today.”

After the morning’s training was over, it was finally time to take to the skies. As she’d never skydived before, Sally was paired up with John, an experienced skydiver who worked at the center.

“I’ve done this loads of times before,” he assured her. “We’ll jump from the plane together; we’ll share the same parachute,” John explained. “OK. I trust you,” Sally said with a smile.

After waiting all her life to do this, she was impatient to go up in the plane. Sally and the others walked to the airfield. “We’ll go first,” John told Sally. “Put this earpiece in so I can talk to you through my radio.” As the plane took off, Sally was so excited that she forgot to put the earpiece in. “I’m finally doing this,” she thought to herself, unaware of her mistake.

The plane was soon over 3,000 meters up, and Sally and John were sitting at the plane’s open door, ready to jump. “OK, Sally, let’s do this!” John shouted as he launched the pair of them into the sky. Wind was soon rushing through Sally’s hair as she dropped quickly to the ground.

“Oh, my parachute won’t open,” John said into his radio. “You’ll have to open yours,” he added, but there was no reply. “Sally. SALLY?” he shouted, his voice full of fear.

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE

The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.

The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the   sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.

Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It all began when my younger brother, Chris, and I went over to Aunt Barbara and Uncle Howard’s for Thanksgiving. My aunt and uncle live on a farm and Chris and I love going there. One day, Uncle Howard handed me two turkey eggs.

“You kids put those under a setting hen,” he said, “and in twenty-five days, you’ll have a couple of fine turkeys!”

Chris was so excited that he nearly dropped his egg on the way to the house. We both stuffed ourselves at dinner and then couldn’t wait to go home and tend to our eggs.

Twenty-five days seemed like forever. Finally, on the twenty-sixth day, Chris and I walked into the coop after school and spotted two balls of fluff, falling over their feet and looking sort of confused. It wasn’t long before the chicks lost their fuzz and began growing feathers. Chris name done Bill, and I named the other Timothy.

I don’t know what happened, but one day we found Bill dead beside the coop. Chris felt terrible. I told him that from now on, Timothy belonged to him, too.

Mom kept telling us not to get too attached to Timothy, because we were going to have him for Thanksgiving. But we never paid too much attention to what that really meant.

Then, one day toward the end of October, Dad penned Timothy up and gave Chris and me instructions.

“I want you to start giving him corn along with his regular feed,” he said. “We want a nice, fat bird for Thanksgiving.” After Dad turned and walked away, Chris began to cry.

“Don’t worry, Chris,” I said comfortingly. “Well save Timothy, somehow.”

“Why don’t we give him away?” Chris suggested.

“No,” I said. “If we do, he’ll just end upon someone else’s Thanksgiving table.”

“What if we take him out in the woods?”

“He always comes back at night,” I said. We both sighed.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My name is Manan, and I am in the sixth grade. Of all the festivals, Diwal is a Hindu festival that is celebrated in autumn, is my favorite because I can set off fireworks and eat delicious foods during the festival.

One day, I went shopping for fireworks with my grandfather. I was looking at the brightly colored fireworks when suddenly I bumped into a little boy. All my fireworks scattered out of the bag.

I quickly bent down to pick them up. Then I noticed the boy’s face was full of wonder and amazement as he stared at my fireworks. It appeared as though he had never seen any this closely. When he bent down to pick them up, I snatched them from him and quickly put them back in my bag. As I stood there looking at him, I realized there was something different about this boy. His clothes were old and torn; he looked as though he had not eaten for a few days.

On reaching home, I finished my dinner quickly and ran out to set off the fireworks. I was fascinated by the variety of colors that burst open from the fireworks and lit up the sky, but my wonder was short-lived. I noticed that my grandfather had gone inside the house coughing. Wondering why, I looked around and noticed all the smoke that may have been irritating his throat. Feeling bad for only a second, I continued lighting the fireworks one after another. But, inside me, it felt different—I felt guilty about taking pleasure from bursting the fireworks.

I could feel my conscience pricking me, “Manan! How can you do this? It just takes a few minutes for all the money to disappear in smoke, but the boy you met today looked like he did not even have the basic necessities of life. The children in orphanages also need love and help. Didn’t you see how your fireworks have affected Grandpa too? Can you still ignore these things and indulge in this kind of fun?” Realizing the worthlessness of this temporary pleasure, I really wanted to use the money in a more rewarding way. I started thinking about my own way to celebrate Diwali.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Everything about moving day was a puzzle. I didn't know anything about our new building on a new street. Our old life was broken into pieces and packed up in piled boxes. I wondered if it would ever fit back together again.

Mom introduced me to our new neighbours, the Chens. Mrs Chen worked with Mom at the job she'd just started. Mr Chen was a famous craftsman(匠人) from China.

Mom said it was a fresh start, but it felt broken to me. I just wanted things to go back to how they had been before.

After the first day at my new school, I walked home alone. Mom had told me she had to work. I was still hoping she'd meet me after the bell. I had to open the door myself with the new key. I felt a bit hungry and went straight into the kitchen, ripping tape from the packed boxes while I searched for a clean plate. My fingers slipped, and something went crashing to the ground.

“Benjamin” cried Mom from the doorway. I didn't hear her come in. “What just broke?” she asked, kneeling to pick up the pieces. In her hands, I recognized the shattered pieces. It was Grandma's bowl. “I can't believe you broke this,” she said.

“Well, I can't believe we have to live here now! I can't believe I have to switch schools, and I can't believe you didn't even meet me after my first day” I ran into my room, slamming the door behind me.

The broom swept across the kitchen floor. Then the click of Mom's bedroom door closed behind her. I sneaked out into the kitchen and found the fragments in the dustbin. There were so many pieces in here, but maybe I could put them back together. Turning the pieces, I tried to match them, but this bowl would never look the same again.

“I'm sorry I yelled,” said Mom, as she opened her door. “Please just throw out the pieces. We can't make a fresh start with broken things.”

As I wandered down the hall, Mr Chen was emptying his garbage.

Jesse Dufton was born with a genetic condition, retinitis pigmentosa (色素性视网膜炎), and over the years, his eyesight gradually worsened. By the time he got to university in Bath to study Chemistry it had got to the point where he couldn’t really see images at all, only the difference between light and dark. And a few years later, he was almost 100% blind.

Jesse’s mum was a teacher and his dad ran a charity, and they’ve always encouraged and supported him in everything.

Jesse started climbing when he was young. His dad took him up his first rock route when he was two. All his early climbing was outdoor traditional climbing. His dad had been in the Mountain Rescue and was part of a mountaineering club, so they would go for weekends away climbing throughout the UK.

Jesse’s father taught him everything and guided his first route outside when he was 11. At this time he had about 30% blurry (模糊不清的) central vision. He could just see well enough to place rock equipment, but not well enough to pick out the routes from the ground.

At university he joined the Mountaineering Club and was able to climb much more frequently. They had regular trips to indoor walls and weekends away outdoors. He developed a great circle of climbing friends and went on multiple trips to Europe. On these he started Alpine climbing and ice climbing too.

But when his sight dropped to a level where he could no longer read, it started to be difficult to place equipment as he couldn’t see whether it was properly seated. He also stopped being able to pick out the holds at indoor walls.

Jesse thought he might have to give up climbing as his eyesight got worse. But his parents never give up hopes for him. They planned a climbing for the family and encouraged Jesse to have a try again. Jesse smiled because he knew his parents would always be his best guide.

I will never forget the day I passed my driving test and got my license. The instructor just informed me that I passed and was reviewing the driver restrictions with me as I was full of smiles. Meanwhile, I looked over at my dad and he was staring at his phone with a strange look. “Excuse me sir, but I must take this call…” my father rudely interrupted. “Hello?”, he answered the phone. The look on his face was unforgettable as he turned as white as a ghost. My first thought was that someone was in the hospital or had died. Although it turned out that everyone was safe, little did I know that phone call would change my attitude to life forever.

The call was from the North Middleton Fire Department and they informed my father that he needed to get to the house as soon as possible. My dad was about to shut his phone when suddenly I heard my sister on the phone. All I could hear was her crying hysterically and screaming “Fire”! I had one thought going through my head at that moment, and it was my niece, Myleeah. Did my sister get her out of the house in time? She was only six months old and I adored her more than anything in the entire world. We ran out of the office both in complete shock. Needless to say, my dad was driving like crazy.

At this point I didn’t even know how to prepare myself. The thought of my house burning to the ground didn’t seem to be real. The drive from the office to my house was only a fifteen-minute drive, but it felt like forever. Finally after running red lights and driving off the side of the road, we were half a mile away from the house. All we could see was black smoke and floating ashes filling the sky. This was when reality hit me and I thought not only might I lose my home, but also my baby niece. I began to break down in tears and pray that everyone was safe.

Paragraph 1:

We finally pulled into my neighborhood which was full of fire trucks, police cars, and black ash.

Paragraph 2:

I finally found my sister sitting in our neighbor’s yard with black ash all over her.

Unlike most U.S national parks, Everglades national park, located in south Florida, was created to protect a fragile ecosystem(生态系统)instead of safeguarding a unique geographic feature. It is a heaven for a wide range of wildlife, such as turtles, snakes, lizards, the Grass frog, Wading birds and so on, among which are fierce American alligators(鳄鱼). It is said that some of the alligators often appear in the areas where people live, causing much damage.

A terrible incident happened on a hot summer day. It was so hot a day that nearly every one felt like jumping into the cool water. A little boy simply couldn’t put up with the heat, deciding to go fora swim in the old swimming hole behind his house.

“Mum, it being so hot, I want to have a swim.” the boy told his mother while walking out.

“No, Honey, there has been a warning that an alligator from the park has appeared in the surrounding area. It is dangerous!” said his mother in a loud voice. But the little boy rushed out of the back door like a gust of wind before his mother could stop him.

He was in such a hurry to dive into the cool water that he left behind shoes, socks, and shirt as he left.

He flew into the water and enjoyed the comfortable feeling that the cool water brought him, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, an alligator was swimming toward him. His mother was preparing dinner in the kitchen when suddenly she caught the two getting closer and closer to each other as she was looking out of the window. “Oh, My God!” she couldn’t help crying loudly, getting into a great panic. And then in great fear, she ran toward the water, shouting to her son as loudly as she could all the way, “Alligator, Alligator!”

Hearing her voice, the little boy became alarmed and made a U-turn to swim to his mother. However, it was too late. Something horrible was happening.
