Sports Day was getting close in the school. All the children were very excited and were practicing for the big race. John, one of the fast runners of the school, was confident that he would win for he was not doing anything at all. “You have to work hard to come first in the race John. You are not practicing at all,” said John’s mother.

“Mom, you know how fast I am! Why should I waste my time running? Only I will win; no one else will win!”said John. “John, you may be right but talent (天赋) without hard work is not good at all. This laziness of yours will cost you greatly,” his mother warned him. John just laughed. He was so confident that he would win the trophy (奖杯) as no one else in his class was as fast as he was!.

Tim, a classmate of John, was also participating (参加) in the running race. He was not a fast runner. However, he practiced till late at night and had developed great endurance (持久力) to run the race.

There were a few days left for the Sports Day but John did not practice at all. On the other hand, Tim practiced day and night.

2 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was a Saturday afternoon. I was having lunch when Dad told me to get ready. I became unhappy. I don’t like Saturdays! Even though it’s a holiday for most children, it is not for me because I need to go to football club.

Many kids love sports, but I am not one of them. I prefer to stay at home and read. I don’t like running, so in a team I am a bad player. The coach is tired of me and my teammates sometimes think I’m useless.

I have no idea how to play football. Usually, after practice my teammates would ask me to stay out of the game and I would just nod.

Last Thursday, the coach told us that we would be competing with another team in a month and many people would come to see the game. Our opponents (对手) were the winner last year and I froze and thought how awkward it would be if the team lost because of me.

So I decided to practice hard for the match and I went to practice every single day.

After one month, when the game day came, my teammates were unwilling to take me in the team, and I also wished to stay away from the ground as well. But they happened to be short of one player and had no choice but to take me in the team.

Our team was the Big Blues. There was a great cheer on our arrival in the field. I got very nervous. The game started and within two minutes, I got a blue card. By the time I was allowed back, the score was two goals for each team and the next goal would decide the winning team.

The event that stands out in Tom’s memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old.He was at home with his elder sister Jane.Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.

“Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop.” someone shouted. Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate,a thick cloud of smoke greeted him.The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.

Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor (走廊) through the smoke.

“She would have run for safety like everyone else!” Tom cried. However,Jane refused to give up.“I know Makcik’s still inside.” She said she was familiar with Makcik’s daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded against the door.“Go downstairs.Go now! Go!”

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On a cold windy day, a poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door. Wandering on the street, he was not a successful seller. What’s worse, he found that he only had one dime left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn’t eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house. Hesitantly he knocked at a door, thinking about what to say when it was opened. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. “What can I do for you?” asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while, “Would you please give me some...a drink of water?” the boy dared not to look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give him energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup, he drank it up slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied with a warm smile on her face. “My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness.”Deeply moved, he said sincerely, “Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart.” As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but it also increased his faith in the whole human race. As a matter of fact, he was about to give up and quit before that point.

Years later the young woman became critically ill. However, the local doctors were unable to give an effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city, where specialists can be called in to cure her rare disease. Among those famous specialists, Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately, he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.

Grandpa’s Old Chair

It was the annual cleaning day for the family. John and his mom were busy cleaning the house. They cleaned upstairs, downstairs, inside and outside until everything was spotless. Exhausted, they sank into the couch. Just then, John’s mom noticed an old chair that was faded and worn. That chair was for John’s grandpa, who had lived with them since John’s grandma had died.

“John, come and help me.” John’s mom sprang to her feet. “We’ll take the chair to the curb (路边). The garbage truck is picking up on our block tomorrow.”

As they attempted to move the chair, John’s grandpa made his way through the door. Seeing what was happening, he quickly tried to stop them. “No!” he protested. “You can’t take my chair.”

“But it’s so old...” John’s mom argued. “We’ll buy you a new one.”

“No,” he persisted, trying to push his chair back into place.

John’s mom finally let go of the chair and left the room. With a sigh of relief, the old man sank into his chair and closed his eyes.

“Grandpa, why won’t you let us get rid of the chair?” John asked.

“You don’t understand, John.” His grandpa shook his head and said, “I sat in this chair with your grandma right here when I asked her to marry me. And I sat in this chair the night your father was born. Many years later,” Grandpa’s voice broke, “I sat in this chair when the doctor called and told me that your grandma was ill. I was lost without her, but the chair gave me comfort and warmth.” The old man’s sadness seemed to grow as he recalled that fateful day.

“I understand now.” John looked at his grandpa and said, “This is not just any old chair. It is more like a friend.”

“Yes,” he nodded. “We’ve gone through a lot together.”

However, that night, when John and his grandpa were asleep, John’s mom and dad carried the chair outside. It was a starless night. Snow fell silently from the black sky and covered Grandpa’s chair in a blanket of white.

After gymnastics on Friday, I waited by the front door of the gym to walk home with Jemma. Then I saw her going out the side door with some other girls. They looked at me and started giggling (咯咯地笑). I knew right then that my best friend wasn’t my best friend anymore.

On Saturday morning, my mother asked, “Simone, what are you and Jemma planning today?”

“Who’s Jemma?” I shrugged (耸耸肩), feeling rather upset.

My mother felt a little bit surprised and immediately realized what had happened, but she didn’t say anything. A little while later, she asked me if I could take some magazines she had packed up over to Nana. And I nodded silently.

I was halfway down the block when a new girl in the neighborhood stepped out from behind a gate. She looked like she was going to say something, but I quickened my steps and pretended that I didn’t see her.

Nana was just putting the phone down when I arrived at her apartment. When I sat on the sofa, she brought out a class photo of kids in old-fashioned clothes. She pointed to a girl with short hair. “That’s Beth Lambert,” Nana said. “She was my best friend back then. At least, she had been, until a week before the photo.”

Suddenly, I knew it was my mom that Nana had been talking to on the phone. “I have to go,” I said.

“Simone Gower,” Nana said firmly, “you stay right here.” She handed me a cup of coffee and continued, “Beth and I were best friends in school. We did everything together. Then one day she made new friends and said she didn’t want to hang out with me anymore. It hurt more than almost anything.”

I didn’t say anything. I knew I’d start crying if I opened my mouth.

Nana put down the photo and hugged me.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。

I was in my 30s and my wife left me last month. I had no work and was on my way to the city center to find a job. I had no umbrellas, and I could not afford another one. I sat down in the streetcar and there against the seat was a beautiful silk umbrella with a silver handle.

I examined the handle and saw a name. The usual procedure would have been to turn in the umbrella to the conductor, but somehow I decided to take it with me and find the owner myself. Then I searched a telephone book for the name on the umbrella and found it. I called and a lady answered.

Yes, she said in surprise, that was her umbrella, which her parents, now dead, had given her for a birthday present. But she added, it had been stolen more than a year before. She was so excited that I forgot I was looking for a job and went directly to her small house. She took the umbrella, her eyes filled with tears. We talked for a while, and I must have given her my address. I didn't remember.

The next six months were tough. My last job ended the day before Christmas and my thirty-dollar rent was soon due, and I had only fifteen dollars. When I walked from the streetcar to my small apartment, the air was full of the sound of Christmas merriment. But there should be no Christmas for me. Unless a wonder happened, I would be homeless in January, foodless, jobless.

Peggy, my daughter, had proudly set our kitchen table for our evening meal and put pans out and three cans of food which would be our dinner. When I looked at those pans and cans, I felt broken-hearted. We would have only hamburgers for our Christmas dinner tomorrow. I stood in the cold little kitchen and the coldness in my heart was colder than ice.

It was 8 a.m. Kathy, a 25yearold nurse, had just finished a 2hour night shift at a hospital. She was tired, but glad to be sailing along highway to where she lived. Although the local government had posted a snow alert, the calm grey sky convinced Kathy the drive would be safe. “I figured I'd be in bed in an hour,” she says.

Snow began when she was halfway home. Listening to the radio, Kathy learned the highway was closed because a tractor had slid off the road. She texted some friends and her mom, and tried not to sleep as she waited.

After a couple of hours, however, conditions worsened. Strong winds began rocking Kathy's car. She couldn't see anything outside, and snow was drifting up her doors. It was, she says, “a total white out and rows of cars and trucks”.

Late in the afternoon a police officer came and asked if she was in any difficulty. She said she was fine. She asked the police officer if there was any way to get past the trucks. “No, ma'am,” he answered. “You're not going anywhere.”

Once as it got dark, Kathy began to worry. She texted his brother Cris, telling him to drive snowmobiling buddy to get to the highway and find her.

As Cris rode slowly alongside the rows of cars and trucks, people would roll down their windows and ask for help. “I was the first person they'd seen in six hours.” He explained he was picking up his sister. He told them, “Nobody's coming and I can't take you.”

Near 10 p.m., Cris reached Kathy. He directed Kathy to pull her car onto the shoulder and asked her to get into his snowmobiling buddy.

As they headed for home, the fun started. About five kilometres into the journey, Cris made a mistake. What he thought was a shallow ditch turned out to be a deep trough. Instead of coming out the other side, they just kept going down. They were trapped. And feathery snow was over their heads.

Jim loved adventures when he was a little boy. He was also a strong-minded boy who didn't give up easily.

One day when he was thirteen years old, he asked some friends to climb a mountain with him. The boys agreed and they even decided to camp at the top of the mountain. Then after they got ready, they set off. It was a beautiful day and the boys started climbing the mountain happily after they got to the foot of it. The mountain was very tall and it was tiring for the young boys to climb it, but everyone was passionate about the activity and no one complained.

When it got dark, they finally reached the top and they all shouted happily. Then Jim started counting. To his shock, there was one missing.

“Where is Mike?” he asked.

All the boys looked around and they didn't see Mike around. They got concerned.

“Mike, Mike…” they started shouting. But there was no response. Worrying that Mike might be in danger, the boys knew they must return to find him. However after climbing the mountain for hours, they were all tired, so Jim asked the other boys to camp there and then he went down the mountain to find Mike alone.

Jim left the boys and started going down the mountain with a flashlight. Though tired, hungry and cold, he still didn't give up because of worrying about his friend. But things got even worse when his flashlight suddenly stopped working,

Jim almost became desperate. Out of despair, he started calling his friend’s name. To his joy, finally, he got a weak response. Mike was just nearby.

Jim felt his way in the darkness and walked toward his friend. Luckily the moon got out of the cloud and Jim could finally see again. He found his friend who had been trapped in a hole for hours. Jim managed to pull Mike up from the hole, and Mike was finally safe. However, Jim was so tired that he fell and rolled down a slope and lost consciousness.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

During this past year, I’ve had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things happened, I was sick of the way most people hadn’t bothered to help. One of those times, I was on the side of the road for close to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶), and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father bounded out.

He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need something to support it. Then he got a saw (锯子) from the truck and cut a section out of a big log on the side of the road. We rolled it over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.

I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No worries: He handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was a very happy man.

The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our hands. I tried to put a $20 bill in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so instead I went up to the truck and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked the little girl where they lived. Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could work on a fruit farm for the next few weeks. Then they would go home.
